Abstract:
I develop three models that are designed to aid in the analysis of environments in which agents i) benefit from interacting with others, and ii) optimally choose their characteristics mindful of the fact that such choices will influence the quality of interaction that they can expect. Of central interest is the ways in which a concern for interaction affects the efficiency with which agents choose their characteristics. The first two models contrast with previous work in that each agents' relevant characteristics are both unobserved and endogenously determined. The first model provides an expl

Two studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997 at the University of Arizona Maricopa Agricultural Center (MAC) to evaluate the added nitrogen interaction (ANI) or ‘priming effect’ on the determination of nitrogen recovery efficiencies (NRE). The method employed was to compare NRE’s as calculated by two different methods; the difference technique and the isotopic technique. The difference in NREs observed between the two methods indicates the extent of an ANI. Results demonstrated no statistical differences between NRE’s calculated by the two methods. Therefore, no ANI was observed in the field. T

Instead of using a visual-manual interface, a speech interface could be a safer alternative if designed properly. Abstract:
This thesis presents applications of molecular quantum electrodynamics (MQED) to the analysis of resonance energy transfer (RET), molecular absorption and emission, and light scattering by molecules. An MQED framework describes such processes as a series of microscopic photonic interaction events. Multi-interaction processes entail intermediate states of the system’s evolution remaining unspecified, requiring careful interpretation. RET, as modified by coupling with the nearest molecule of the surrounding refractive medium, is investigated. Special attention is given to a system geometry where

<p>Medical imaging is going through a continuous development leading to more available information for the reviewing doctors. The information is a powerful tool in the strive to make reliable diagnosis but it can also be a challenge for the doctor to make use of all the information. This thesis investigates if the computer-based review workplace can be made more efficient using other input devices than the traditional mouse and keyboard. To acquire knowledge about the existing user interactions six interviews have been conducted at two Swedish hospitals. In the thesis a 3D mouse has been integ

Bicharanloo, Bahareh. "Belowground carbon allocation interacting with nutrient availability." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/27287.

Abstract:
Plants spend a high proportion of their photosynthetically fixed carbon (C) belowground to root biomass, rhizodeposition or to support mycorrhizal fungi in exchange for nutrients while most of this C expenditure is associated with root and hyphal respiration. This thesis aimed to investigate the controls on plants’ C allocation belowground, and what the consequences are for microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) of soil- vs plant-derived C and for mediating N dynamics. In module system one, four wheat genotypes with variated root traits, biomass and rhizodeposition were grown in pots under two

Abstract:
Atomic resolution structures of protein-protein interactions were initially limited to X-ray crystallography; with unnatural buffers, pHs and forced lattice structures. NMR extended investigations to be able to determine solution based structures of small complexes, but proteins of any size or high dynamicity remain problematic, whilst ab initio investigation remains almost impossible. Using site-directed spin labelling (SDSL) across both docking partners, in combination with the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique pulsed electron-electron double resonance (PELDOR) allows for the p
