Full textWhen a researcher settles for a long time, as a resident, in his research field, he is able to obtain answers, from his/her interviewees, that are more truthful, than if he were to simply stay for a limited time there. The analysis of this dissertation was to measure the link between the ability from Lozerian natives to communicate in the vernacular language with their sense of identity in a diglossic situation where the stigmatization of that dialect is not longer as pregnant as in the past. In the least populated area in France where rurality does not necessarily mean rural isolation, the secular influences of nearby areas, as well as the ancestral way of life of the Lozerian natives, have forged a common identity anchored around mutual assistance, conviviality, the generosity of discourse, the sharing of traditional valeues and the welcoming of the Other. The use of the theoretical framework of symbolic interaction allows us to structure this research to grasp sociolinguictical representations linked to the Occitan culture. The history of Lozère, its geography, the geolinguistic zones defined for the field research, are all epistemologic elements that permit to showcase rurality, isolation and the survival of indigenous populations in order to try to contain the linguistic substitution to ensure the transmission of the heritage language in future generations so that we prevent the repetition of the trauma that older folks have felt when the use of the regional dialect was prohibited in the linguistic hegemonic framework in French, while in school

Full textThis thesis starts from a concrete example (a situation of design) to reveal the action and ways of thinking which people build when they make a collective decision. In this work, we analyse the emergence of a group decision making from authentic interactions between various actors of a situation of design. Our first interrogation is to check if there is a dynamic of construction in a decision-making process. Our theoretical framework is supported by a Vygotsky's socilcultural approach. We would understand the sosio-cognitive processe when a group make a decision. We analyse these social interactions under their double linguistic and " usual " aspect (handling on the world, mobilisation of the world). We underlined during these analyses the fact that the collective decisions are the accomplishement of socio-cognitive engagement. These successive socio-cognitive engagements are co-elaborate by the interactants and emerge from a social interaction

Full textThe interactionnist and inductive perspective of the grounded theory adopted as the compebensive observation in various institutionnal segments of the system for social action enables us to bring out multiplicity of contractual figures as they have been outlined by social workers in their relationship with the clientele. The off the record (or invisible) contract pertaining to the settlements fixed by the professionnals with their clients and the ex situ (underground) contract negociated behind the scene rub shoulders with the institutionnal contract. The professionnal primacy which is granted to off the record or underground rules or even the activation of an artefactual system partake of the organization of a contactual matrise based on an assessment of merit, demerit, fragility and/or institutionnal loyalty. Better still, the ethico-social etiology of social workers towards recipients builds up a distinctive social order. Waking together the social workers' ethical economy and their cognitive economy underlies they will link their sensitive and their normative commitments. The equivocal association of social workers' sensitive statuory self with their normative statuory self partakes of the production of numerous professional subjective and ethical dilemmas. Hence, the practical axiology of the members in the various worlds of the social work (incorpored professionnals, confirmed professionnals and mavericks) can achieve three figures of client social inclusion : the primary inclusion and the secondary positive or negative inclusions which depend on the. Degree and the nature of the client's subjectivation and the professionnals' itdentity judgement. Thus, the latent strengh of the weak bonds tied by the professionnals with their clientèle as well as the autority of underlying rules supports the foundation of a welfare state regulated by an invisible law

Full textContemporary France does not know a more legitimate mean of personnel selection than the public examination, and since 1958 it has become the means of magistrates recruitment by excellence. It is noteworthy, however, that the state of the art in the sociology of professional groups in France today does not take the examination into consideration when seeking an answer to the question “how does one become a magistrate in France today?” Instead, most work consecrates on the teachings at the National School of Magistracy (ENM) and on the magistrate's professional socialization. A variety of answers to the question of selection are proposed by contemporary scholarship. The determinist answer explains the social selection processes by the structural determination linked to the “competence heritage” coming above all from the social origin and the scholar's background. The comprehensive answer explains the competitions and selections by means of a “mirror effect” between jurors and candidates. A first institutional answer suggests that the examination is designed in order to select the best students finishing the university system. A second institutional answer, which is simultaneous and concurrent with the first, says that the examination must search in the candidates a suitable profile for the profession of magistrate from a technical but also a psychological point of view. Finding these explanations to be insufficient or even false, this work is dedicated to the formulation of a new one. Through the use of interactionnist sociology and an empirical multi-method approach, the research presented here seeks to revalue the interactions among jurors and candidates, and the peculiar context of the different exams as a major source of a new possible answer to the question “how does one become a magistrate in France?” For now, instead of ignoring it, it is necessary to reassess to the apparent tautology that says “the examinations selects those who are best prepared for the examinations,” because it is not as futile as it seems

Full textThis theoretical and practical thesis concerns the place and function, in the universe of the human being in general and the artist in particular. The analysis of my key works (created between 1981 and 1992) suggest the answers. The perceptive attitude of the artist that originates from the work will define the perceptive attitude that the viewer will adopt towards it. The evolution of these two attitudes is parallel, and is examined by phenomenological methods. During this work the visual perception of nature transforms itself into an interior corporal perception. In other words, the relation between subject and object develops into a correlation between the perceiving subject and the perceived subject. This attempt of unification inside the subject (artist) becomes equally effective inside the viewer when he adheres and complies with the symbolic transfer to which the sculptures invite. The active and symbolic participation of the viewer is compared to the one that exists in art that has magic and or therapeutic characteristics. This operational character of the work of art can be discovered within the contradictions and interrogations of contemporary art. This possible interaction between art and life once again questions the function of art and actualizes the links existing between ethics and esthetics

The player's practice is confronted with the institution's position brings to light signs which lead to the disclosure of unvoiced comments. Transcendence, be it on a religious or secular level does no longer feed the educational thinking. One is made to forget the religious frame and its thirst for power over the regional school scene. The running of the authorities which rule every day life in a school was analysed, pointing out its inflexibility and how it stems from an authoritarianism legitimated by its peculiar nature. As a member of the institution he is probing into, the researcher is alsos witness and therefore feels a duty to analyze his self implication

Full textNight-strolling is a phenomenon emerging in the dynamic metropolitan cities like Paris and Madrid. Having party in town during the night-time is a practice democratized among urban young people. They go out of the merchant locations and take a large quantity of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The negative social representations refer to a public health problem (“stoned” vulnerable young people) and a legal problem of the way to “live together”. Night symbolic highlights these dimensions. Night-time has become an electoral issue. Analyzing the construction of a public policy about nightlife reflects the gap between the actors in negotiation and the night-strolling. A biased public participation – without the night-strollers - allows the legitimation of socio-technical systems of repression. Residents-plaintiffs attack the noise terraces, ownerships of night-enterprises defend the economic development and institutional actors encourage night tourism attraction. However, this social phenomenon highlights the desynchronization of social rhythms and urban temporalities, specific to the third modernity. Understanding how young people publicize this desynchronization in situation give elements about norms and values produced. This study deals with their tactics face the urban planning, the management of the stigma they carry, the forms of legitimization in the ordinary placement of urban nights. The symbolic conflicts of nocturnal cohabitation emerge by the voice of night-strollers: a youth recognition problem
Calamel, Charles. "Le jazz comme science d'éducation : vers un modèle explicatif du jazz à partir de la formation des savoirs du jazzman." Thesis, Paris 10, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA100053.
Full textThis thesis aims to develop a comprehensive explanatory model of jazz as a system for producing knowledge. A system that produces anthropological knowledge in the sense of knowledge common to and transferable to all human beings; that produces learning methods and learning conditions; that produces knowledge for and about education in general, since jazz as understood by this theory can be applied and transposed to learning contexts other than the musical or artistic ones. Jazz can thus be understood as an educational system. The present thesis studies jazz in four conceptual dimensions, defining jazz as a system that allows its practitioners to develop various kinds of knowledge and skill. The epistemological foundation of the thesis lies in Blumer’s Symbolic Interactionism, which implies an approach based on proximity to the actors and their interactions, in order to grasp the workings of the knowledge creation process as accurately as possible and thus demonstrate the function of jazz as an educational system. Various theoretical lenses are used to analyse the field data, borrowing from Erving Goffman’s Frame Analysis, from Francois Dubet’s sociology of experience, from the theories of motivation as well as from knowledge dynamics. At the same time, with reference to Anselm Strauss’s grounded theory, we have been able to construct a significant part of the theoretical framework of the thesis using results from field research, notably the mental maps created during the interviews. The organization of jazz performance is perceived as a sequence of educational situations, whether formal, non-formal, or informal. A global appraisal of the research data leads us to postulate four experience fields within jazz practice, and to identify eight learning parameters. This explanatory model holds the key to understanding and opens the door to a range of applications by illuminating the steps taken by the individual on the path towards self-directed learning, as prompted by his or her direct experience

Full textThe purpose of this research was to study the coping strategies of teenagers when they are confronted by the criticisms of their closest friends in their class about a brand choice and their effect on brand attitude and repurchase intention. We have developed a situational measurement of coping strategies of teenagers. We have found five coping strategies: the justification, the revenge, the denial, the fact of making feel guilty of criticizers and the self-reproach. The final study was carried out on 446 teenagers. A part of the hypotheses were validated: certain negative emotions felt immediately after exposure to the stressor influenced the strategies of teenagers. These latter could have an adaptative or maladaptative effect on the negative emotions which are felt after coping. Finally, these last emotions, according to their nature, could have an influence on brand attitude and/or repurchase intention. Several effects of moderating variables were also analyzed

Full textIn my thesis, I have studied the following hypothesis : the people invited to discuss and play on "broadcasted debates" stage emotions, which institute a familiarity between the audience and the discussed political fact. I have focused on four political debates : Le Grand Jury, Mots croisés, the "Débats" page of Le Monde and the British program Question Time. My thesis begins with a theoretical assessment of the two main methodologies used in my fieldwork : an ethnography of the debates and a discourse analysis. Then, a short historical overview, based on secondary sources, linking the history of French and English debates, is presented. This perspective leads me to describe the current organization of these debates, as I attended them during my ethnography. A first section presents "the organization of meetings", how the hosts of the debates receive the guests, and a second section offers a description of the "sequence interactions" - how the external participant evolve in these debates. The final section offers an interpretation of the discourses held in my three French fields. My attention is focused on the way the guests are "grown up" during the debates on the 2005 riots. I also pay attention on the meaning of the exchanges which take place there. These reflections lead me to conclude that "mediatized debates" construct a hybrid space between fidelity to political stakes and marketing requirements

Full textThis thesis proposes an attentional relation detector aiming at identifying in real-time dependencies between users and devices equiped in a smart environment. These estimations are used to adapt human computer interaction in a flexible and continuous manner according to digital services. Our model is based on a gravitational and spotlight metaphor. The physical salience of objects is described as a mass. The estimated intention of users is represented by a speed vector which completes the attention definition. A quasi-linear combination provides the focus of attention. Combined with a model of limited resources, each part of attentional resources is distributed to objects according spatial relationships. We evaluate our model by simulating different spatial arrangements. The results were compared with results known in social sciences literature. Other estimations processed on real scenes have been compared with experts evaluation. The model is found robust to estimation of the direction of focus. Ln terms of the distribution of resources the level of agreement is sufficiently reliable. Our model permits a dynamic and flexible perception and can adapt the interaction according to the attentional state of users

Full textThis thesis is based on the inclusion of cohousing, since the early 2010, in a process of institutionalization in which the interests of associative and political actors converge. These city initiatives, which appeared in the mid-2000s under various names, were unified under the term "habitat participatif" in 2010, thus demonstrating the will to appear as a single movement representing greater social and environmental values compared to the traditional housing stock. However, these operations were not the first of their kind with similar collective projects emerging from the late 1970s until the mid-1990s under various names: self-managed group housing, grouped housing or shared housing. Beside the generational difference, this work focuses on the mechanisms of temporal, social and political transformations of the cohousing movement, as well as their effects on the actors involved. For five years, the study was based on two Lille Metropole operations that emerged in these two historical contexts, thus making it possible to study the results of a varied qualitative analysis. To strengthen the approach and to highlight evolution patterns, I put the French case into perspective with the examples of Denmark and the Canton of Geneva. Guided by the principles of urban sociology and by interactionism, without strictly sticking to them, I first develop the theoretical and methodological framework of this research. Then I move on to make a historical and thematic analysis of the genesis of construction, ranging from the historical implications of living together and the conception of the common, to associative construction over the decades. I believe that a detour in the genesis of this phenomenon is an essential prerequisite to understand the mechanisms of action and their effects on political and professional actors, whose practices and uses are rooted in a world where the inhabitant is often only a minor figure. The inhabitant actor is the ultimate object of analysis of this work, in both an individual and a collective dimension. This is mainly done, on the one hand, to grasp the reasons to get involved in these alternative long-term projects and, on the other hand, to highlight the changes induced in the vision and the living practices
Goularte, Raquel da Silva. "A PONTA DO ICEBERG É O PROFESSOR NA ESCOLA."

Full textThis thesis is to examine closely the pattern of religious pilgrims gauchos "faithful" to the Virgin of Lujân, as dynamic processes built between the territory and secularization of the sacred space today. The term catholic "gauchos" has a particular given the cultural and social frameworks. To do this it seemed necessary to organize it in three stages: the first posing the problem of religions contemporary, its various forms of territoriality and its social justification and current space. Ln a second phase, we will provide a framework of territorial and historical interpretation at the national level, which is essential to understand the dimension of the pilgrimage gaucho. Finally the last phase is focused on territoriality beliefs "Left" and its Catholic social landscape from the pilgrimage to Lujân. On the one hand, it develops the features of the pilgrimage as a religions experience and practice mingling in memory "gaucha" maintained by the Centers Criollos conservatives and defendersof tradition and the Virgin "Gaucha", holders of identity. On the other hand, it analyzes the speech and beliefs about the origin of the pilgrimage, as weil as religions motives that produce the territory of the gaucho communitas. Tensions and exchanges between the groups give shape to a particular territory marked multiple meanings, and sometimes even contradictory, resulting in a dynamic interaction symbolic between the spatial models and the geosymbols

Full textThe purpose of the thesis is to understand and explain the weight of the social representations conveyed as regards ferna1e single parent households, and to understand the influences on these involved. Using methodological and theoretical tools of symbolic interactionism, this research shows how these households are regularly undermined and alienated due to the unflattering comparison to the "conventional" nuclear family. The generation of the theory points to an inductive approach. FOUI research areas have allowed this thesis to he carried out: the main area consists of semi-structured interviews conducted with mothers and children (teens and young adults) of single parent households; the other three are fields of observation (observation of several social networks for single parents, participation in discussion groups, study of media coverage on single parenting in the press, radio and television). The survey reveals that single parents are usually represented (in the media government reports and many social science publications) as objects of concern and sources of risk (mainly economic and psychoemotional). Mothers and children of these households define and adjust their situation with respect to these references which legitimate (sometimes despite themselves) the private lite organization standards. The study thus appears as an indicator of the status of these standards. It also grasps what the single parents may formulate and claim in this context

Full textOur research derives from the presence of recurrent language phenomena ob-served in the oral production of young learners of French as a second language in school. The linguistic, syntactic and semantic structure of their language productions seemed to be marked by features of enunciative heterogeneity that affected these utterances in their materiality. On initial examination, these phenomena which seem to free themselves from the speakers’ first languages, might point to a deviation or failure with regard to the formal properties of the target language. However, we chose to consider them as manifestations of a discursive behavior, expressing a gen-eral attitude on the part of the speaker-learner towards his or her social environment. Our corpus consists of recordings or transcriptions of oral productions. In this study we aim to understand and interpret these phenomena. For this purpose we set up a theoretical framework which seemed to shed light on our questions and provide some possible answers. We established a connection between the concepts of dialo-gism, polyphony, socio-discursive interactionism and the analysis of these discursive forms belonging to the field of acquisition. On the basis of these concepts, we at-tempted to highlight the dynamic and decisive role of the social and linguistic context in second language developing.Key wordsDialogism-Socio-discursive interactionism- French as a second language-Interlinguistic space- NAM (Newly Arrived Migrants)

Full textOur research project aims to measure the impact on pupils' learning activities of the use, by the actors of the didactic situation, of a series of channels of communication. This phenomenon of sequencing orchestrating the activities of learning and learning are called code transitions. It is a question of first showing the scientific stake in the field of didactics. Then, it is a question of circumscribing its essential characteristics. Finally, it is a question of studying the differential impact of these characteristics on the students' gestures of study. This study, in keeping with the paradigm of symbolic interactionism, requires the cross-exploitation of three theoretical frameworks in didactics: that of the theory of didactical situations (TSD) which identifies typologies of situations organized around stages in the construction of a knowledge at stake, that of the anthropological theory of didactics (TAD) which articulates to the knowledge at stake the notion of relation to knowledge, and which substitutes this notion of knowledge for that of praxeology, and finally that of the theory of joint action in didactics (TACD), organized around the essential idea that school knowledge is not defined in a top-down and prescriptive way, but is also an upward transposition which induces the necessary consideration of the dimensions of practical epistemology of the teacher in his institution, didactic actions and these different descriptors. The system put in place, inscribes us in the comparatist perspectives in didactics according to a descriptive and comprehensive approach by crossing interviews, video observations, and traces taken in flight. The results show that the codic transitions constitute the bulk of the interaction time and are organized according to a directional charge, delays, degrees of evolution which evolve over time and which inform the action register. teacher. These characteristics also vary according to the mode of convocation of the knowledge that underlies them, at the interface between conscious cognition and intuition. They structure a rhythm of intervention and differential interaction in terms of levels of practice and gender. They pilot the pupils' gestures of study accordingly

With this work we built a four steps methodological framework : outline research conception, empirical information collection, local knowledge building generic knowledge building and diffusion. In this empirical study, we achieved about sixty interviews, in four stores of a small Company. Moreover, we collected others informations (observations, documents). The interpretation of these gave rise to local knowledge building. Comparing this knowledge with existing theory, we built generic knowledge : - if we adopt a positive attitude toward athers, if organizationar goals are in phase with individual goals, extemal commitment and internal commitment could improve themselves in a recursive loop. Then, it is both interesting for individuals to live positively external commitment and to organization to improve their situation. - The " self " construction generic model built starting from Mead works could study dynamically both internal and external commifment - Dzjgereen between behaviors mutual upected and bemeen behaviors mutual perception could develop negative recursive loop - More individuals could interact in explicit communication, more they could feel recognized, more if could be possible to avoid the development of decommitment recursive loop. Then, we focused on knowledge diffusion. We started to make it use in an example

Moreover the initial phase of such a trial appears characterized from contents far from the practical necessities of the theacher. In the scholastic practice it does not result permissible to treat in a different way, the theoretical appeals the pointing out the educational procedures. Besides the knots we need to loose are those that attemp to procrastinate an executive role of the teachers, who seem to be only a sort of executors of models imposed by others regarding to the context in which they perform their profession. In the didactic practices, however, the social actors pursuing the formation purposes of the school are progressively affirming their instituent role. This doesn't prevent from finding a sort of culture resisting to the change and capable of entering the minds that rule the daily scholastic life. The ethnography, clearing the instituent function of the social actors, seen while they are producing the specific culture of their own field, it really allows a meaningful reapproaching between theory and practice not only to go on confusing them but to attribute, to the practice a suitable theoretical perspective. The present ethnographic work about the young teacher's formation year shows how it's really the daily practice that allows the structure of a professionalism suitable either to the complex conditions in which the school works, or to the manifold social necessities. Therefore it is sure, that the ethnographic search, offering a scientific certification of their own investigations, it is a practical knowledge which is useful to the practice

Full textThis PhD studies the process of becoming a partner in professional services firms, envisaged through the lens of the building of the partner identity. To this end, it implements the concept of « career » developed by interactionist sociology to analyse the making of a partner in the context of the Big 4 international audit firms. Becoming a partner is a process that starts right after recruitment and which is governed by complex and largely informal mechanisms and political manoeuvring. We characterize these mechanisms with the help of the notion of “stable”, whose purpose is to understand procedures of co-option in their unofficial dimension but also to account for the structuration of the partner level in firms and the role played by hierarchies within this level in post-partner career progression. We come to the conclusion that auditors actually become partners much earlier than their official promotion to the rank, from the moment they consider themselves as such. This awakening is yet only the first turning point on the road to partnership. It is only when they are officially co-opted that auditors become the partners they were, by being recognised as such by their peers, completing therefore their identity conversion. This work contributes to the literature in the sociology of professions and organizational theory fields by investigating how professionals are socialized and how their identity is constructed and by grasping more accurately the organization of professional services firms

Full textThis thesis is a part of the IDEAL project (Implementing DEvelopmentAl Learning) funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR). The ability of perceiving, memorizing and interpreting the surrounding environment is a vital ability found in numerous living beings. This ability allows them to generate context adapted behaviors, or escaping from a predator that escape from their sensory system. The objective of this thesis consists in implementing such a capacity in artificial agents. We propose a theoretical model that allows artificial agent to generate a usable knowledge of elements that compose its environment and a structure able to characterize the structure of surrounding space. This model is based on the sensorimotor contingency theory, and implements a form of intrinsic motivation. Indeed, this model begin with a set of indivisible structures, called interactions, that characterize the interaction possibilities between the agent and its environment. The learning is developmental and emerges from the interaction that occurs between the agent and the environment, without the need of any external intervention (like reward). Our model propose a set of mechanisms that allow to organize and exploit emerging knowledge in order to generate behaviors. We propose implementations of our model to demonstrate the emerging knowledge based on agent-environment interaction, and behaviors that can emerge from this knowledge

Full textThis study is essentially based on the cognitive-affective system theory of personality proposed by Mischel and Shoda (1995). This interactionist model assumes enduring individual differences in the features of situations that individuals select and the cognitive-affective mediating units that interact with and activate other mediating units in the personality system. Our main aim is to study with the help of path analysis the relationships between some mediating units relevant in the context of an academic performance in the domains of French and mathematics : self-efficacy, anxiety, goal orientation and self-regulation strategies use. These variables relate to cognitive, affective and motivational components of self-regulated learning models. All questionnaires have been studied beforehand with polytomous item response models. Subjects are 505 pupils in grades 4 and 5. Some variables are measured at two different levels of generality : situation-specific (appraisals) and domain-specific (dispositional). Situation-specific variables are supposed to mediate the effects of domain-specific variables on performance. We hypothesise different systems of relations between cognitive-affective variables and performance when different domains of knowledge (mathematics or French) are considered. Pupils sex and their level of domain-knowledge are supposed to be important as well. Finally, we suppose that it's possible to find pupils characterised by similar cognitivo-affective profiles more or less adapted to academic achievement and self-regulation activity

Full textNow common in practice, interfirm cooperations remain unexplored, especially in their human and managerial implications. This relative lack of knowledge leads to a deficiency in tools, patterns and concepts to conduct interfirm cooperations. The aim of this exploratory research is to complete knowledge on cooperations, focusing on communicational aspects. The term of communication is used in the o original sense of "sharing together", as stated by what is called the "palo alto movement". Since, information exchanges are not the central point of the analysis. Rather are important interactions and common sensemaking, that may emerge from cooperative situations. It is thus an extension of the interactionist approach of communication to the interorganizational relations frame. From empirical observations, it is then possible to construct a representation of interorganizational communication. Three processes contribute to this pattern : information exchanges, interpersonal relations and common values creation. The study of their dynamic allows to enlighten communicational phenomena stemming from interactions between members of cooperating organizations. Notions of metacommunication and double bind are then developped; trust, as communication, plays here a central role in cooperations

Full textIn France, since early 2000s spreads a literature inviting professionals in contact with people suffering from Alzheimer disease to "personalize" the way they take care of them. This term refers to a humanization that seems to fade away in this particular context. What is asked to medical and paramedical staff, is a true and authentic commitment toward these patients. What is aimed, is a control of emotions and the way they are expressed. This Ph.D explores the way in which "personalization" is practically accomplished in the context of Alzheimer’s Special Care Units. Based on interviews and observations, it shows the banality of "commitment", and also the complexity of it’s execution. From the ethics of care perspective, an invisible work makes life possible for every protagonist living in that kind of environment. This cleverness of the situation drives away the danger of reification, and prevents burnout.Far from the chimerical "professional distance", this field work shows an articulation between commitment and detachment (Elias, 1956). Emotions appears to be a necessity in order to carry out the tasks, but also a danger that requires to be put away. Thus, Alzheimer’s units are characterized by the relative importance of autonomous regulation, in comparison with control regulation (Reynaud, 2004) : formalization process struggle due to the elusive and local nature of the ethics of care

As such they seem to us sometimes familiar but do we really know them ?Through the speech of some forty people who have shared their experiences and the meaning they give to their practices, this thesis proposes an exploration of the current uses of drinking establishments, the reasons that lead us there, to the rituals which accompany the ways of consuming alcohol. Split between several axes that determine behavioral norms, drinking establishments are not experienced or considered in the same way depending on whether it is day or night, whether one goes there alone or accompanied. These axes influence the ways of drinking, the choice of place and the encounters that occur there or not. This varied and yet harmonious orchestration is detailed during this research and offers an original answer as to the place they occupy in our societies

Full textThis PhD deals with menopause as a category and an experience. It aims to understand the mechanisms through which menopause is “made”, as well as their effects. The social construction of menopause, its social treatment and women’s’ lived experiences in the French context are examined from a double perspective: social discourses about menopause and interviews carried out with menopausal women. Firstly, the social construction of menopause in medical discourses reveals the crucial importance of gender in the production of this category, nowadays extremely dramatized in media and advertisement. We then proceed to analyze menopause as a learning process. In order to “denaturalize” menopause, we focus on the socialization which it is a product of, and the interactions which constitute its learning process. Finally, we examine menopause as a process fashioned by social relationships and representations, a trajectory where norms of age and fecundity, representations of the body, and key interactions with physician and significant other are at play

Full textBased on the study of daily interactions between Katangese and Kasaians, in the aftermath of the mass violence committed against the non-native Kasaians in the early 1990s, the dissertation shows that in their face-to-face interactions (Goffman), Katangese and Kasaians used practices of coexistence based on avoidance, silence, and self-censorship. Silence on the past violence and on political topics that can be interpreted with regard to the conflict between the two communities has indeed became an interactional norm of peaceful coexistence, unlike the injunction of NGOs specialized in the 'bottom-up' pacification to set up a dialogue that is deemed to foster a mutual understanding. The dissertation also shows that specific political or socio-economic contexts lead to 'crisis situations' (Dobry; Vidal). These crisis situations result in the polarization of collective identities: Katangese and Kasaians are viewed only by their ethno-regional origins. The expectations about interaction situations are made more difficult, because of the “structural uncertainty” that characterizes 'crisis situations'; and the routine practices of coexistence based on self-censorship and avoidance tend to disappear. From these findings, the dissertation questions the moral injunctions in favor of reconciliation and dialogue, which are at the heart of the theories and practices of 'bottom-up' pacification, and even the eventuality of a “bottom-up” reconciliation spreading step by step a 'culture of peace', which would eventually permeate society as a whole
