Abstract:
The concept of "druggable genome" limits the molecular targets for which commercially viable compounds can be developed. In humans, whose genome accounts for about 30,000 genes, it has been calculated that a subset of no more than 3,000 genes express proteins able to bind drug-like molecules. This limit derives from the fact that the ability of a protein to bind a small molecule with the appropriate chemical properties does not necessarily make it a potential drug target, this latter feature being only applied to proteins that are also linked to disease. Among these, it has become evident that

Despite a century of often successful prevention and treatment efforts, infectious diseases remain an important global problem in public health, causing over 13 million deaths each year. This work has been developed on two areas of major concern nowadays: HIV-1 infection and emerging antimicrobial resistance. The first part of this thesis focused on the definition of the biological role of the dimerization of Nef, HIV-1 accessory protein. This function has been reported to take place in vivo, neveretheless it hasn’t been well characterized yet. We believe that the inihibition of Nef oligomeri

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a leading cause of severe disease in immunocompromised individuals, including AIDS and transplanted patients, and in congenitally infected newborns. Despite the availability of several drugs, pharmacological treatment of HCMV infections is associated with poor bioavailability, toxicity and the emergence of resistant strains. Furthermore, no vaccine is available and no drugs are approved to prevent vertical transmission during pregnancy, therefore, it is essential to identify new potential targets of therapeutic intervention. Abstract:
The presence of protein in white wines represents a major problem for the wine industry mainly due to the fact that proteins generate haze in the bottled white wines. Protein instability, which results in wine haze formation, is due to some grape PR-Proteins that thanks to their intrinsic resistance survive the vinification process, pass into the wine where cause the appearance of undesirable haze and deposits, leading to rejection by consumers. Protein hazing of white wines is considered to be a three-step process, involving protein denaturation followed by aggregation into colloidal particle

Influenza (flu) is an airborne highly-infectious disease, characterized by high morbidity and significant mortality, especially in at-risk population (young children, elderly people, patients with cronical disease). Annually, 20% of general population is affected by seasonal epidemics sustained by genetic variants of already circulating influenza virus strains. For this reason the vaccine has to be changed every year with a considerable economic impact. Furthermore, the influenza virus is responsible for occasional pandemics affecting million of people worldwide. The migratory water bird are t

FIV is similar to Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) in many molecular and biochemical properties, thus representing an attractive model for AIDS research in many different aspects ranging from pathogenesis to therapeutic approaches.
