Abstract:
The present work proposes to account for cultural variability in connection to human family organization, through Darwin’s theories of natural selection and sexual selection. It is also founded on evidence based on the comparison of ethnographic data of diverse human societies. It intends to demonstrate that there is a significant alteration in the behavior of family members when the rules of inheritance of wealth change. These alterations are triggered because the rules of inheritance dictate the MPI – Male Parental Investment – sometimes in the nephew and sometimes in the son. The hypothesis is that this variation in MPI (male investment in either the nephew or the son) modifies family relations in matrilineal and patrilineal organizations in a predictable manner. The role played by MPI in determining family tensions will be shown by applying cross cultural analysis to the data obtained from HRAF (Human Relations Area Files), using PSF (Probability Sample Files). The results of the present work show that societies in which the uncle’s relation with his nephew is affectionate, the husband beats the wife; on the other hand, when the father’s relation with his son is indulgent and friendly, brother and sister avoid each other. This variability of behavior can be coherently explained by sociobiological theory. Cultural wealth: the innumerable customs, the traditions, the taboos, the manifest and hidden norms, the apparatus of coercion, the rules of inheritance, marriage, dowry, bride price, the division of labor, in short, all the rules observed in all human groups can be explained in the light of the following theories: a) ‘kinship selection’ (Hamilton, 1963); b) ‘reciprocal altruism’ (Trivers, 1971; Axelrod, 1981); c) ‘parental investment and sexual selection’ (Trivers, 1972); and d) ‘parentoffspring conflict’ (Trivers, 1974).

Abstract:
This research focuses on the analysis of the Colombian multiculturalism through an operative characterization. In this sense, the assessment of multicultural policies goes beyond the traditional discourse analysis, and instead it empirically reviews the implementation of differential rights translated into concrete public policies. To meet this goal, this study first explores the different symbolic schemes of the relationship between the State-Nation and the indigenous populations. In a second stage, it analyses how the policies that recognize cultural difference since 1991, are articulated with a project of state modernization of neoliberal characteristics, that is exemplified by the territorial decentralization phenomena. Finally, this research presents an analysis of the actual effects of multiculturalism in the fields of health, education, economic production and political governance for the Misak people, specifically for the Resguardo Mayor de Guambia, an indigenous reserve located in the department of Cauca. From this case study, readers will be able to discover how in the Colombian context, there are un-meet aspects (des-encuentros) and paradoxical effects between the Government’s neoliberal vision on public policies, the dynamics of ethnic recognition promoted by the state and the communitarian autonomous processes advocated by indigenous organizations

As the scale and scope of multinational corporations continue to expand, more and more Chinese companies enter the Portuguese market. But at the same time, cultural differences between countries, regions and nationalities have created cultural conflicts, which means that a central challenge for companies and business managers. Since culture and economy are interdependent and inseparable, it is necessary to pay more attention to cultural differences, and proper management strategies of cultural conflicts could solve the possible losses caused by cultural differences. Therefore, this dissertation uses the case of a Chinese acquisition company - Bison Bank in Portugal, uses the qualitative research methodology to analyze the impact of the host country's national culture on its organizational culture and the implications of this influence on cross-cultural management.

Abstract:
This essay is about treatment in preschool and how important it is that we dare to do different based on each child's needs. I sometimes get the feeling that we educators in preschool, have alittle too much of the idea that the working methods we use should suit all children. Dealing with children and adults differently should be a matter of course, especially when we work inpreschool and school. What I mean by daring to do different, is that we need to have the knowledge to see each individual's needs to be able to respond in a clear way so that everyone is understood. According to the Education Act, we must “take into account the different conditions and needs of all children”(Skolverket 2018, p. 6). Which we do if we do not treat all children in exactly the same way, but dare to use different approaches. My dilemma, which I describe in different situations, is when children receive a treatment that does not benefit them and where we educators do not think about or do not have the knowledge of how we should do. The purpose I have with my essay, is to come up with an approach that we can use in the work team, to help the children who for various reasons "worry" us educators. I have tried to go more in depth in our Curriculum for preschool, to get a clearer view of ourmission. What I see and hear in my business has made me curious about how we interpret it and whether it can be used as an argument for me as a preschool teacher in a work team.  The method I use in my thesis is scientific essay writing, where I will be able to come up with how to understand my dilemma better, to be able to handle it in my future professional life. I do this through reflection with supervisors, course participants, literature and with myself.

Abstract:
This thesis explored the communication and conflict style contrasts between criminal justice professionals and African American defendants that can interfere with the equitable administration of justice in the criminal justice system in Dane County, Wisconsin. The focus of this research was on the potential conflict style contrasts between criminal justice professionals and African Americans because the racial disparity in the incarceration rate was greatest for African Americans. This research project began from the premise that the racial incarceration rate disparity was caused in part by differences in cultural conflict and communication styles, and it explored the intersection of power differentials and cultural conflict and communication style differentials. The study employed the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory, courtroom observations, and two focus groups. One focus group was composed of professionals in the criminal justice system from Dane County, Wisconsin, and the other of African Americans who have been impacted negatively by this system. All findings were used to develop specific training recommendations to help criminal justice professionals to understand conflict and communication style preferences with the intention of decreasing the disparate treatment of members of the African American community. The combined research strategies suggested that the primary culture of the criminal justice system was consistent with European American cultural preferences for low-context, direct, and emotionally restrained communication and conflict styles, which contrasts with the general preference of the African American culture for a more emotionally expressive engagement style. While this research did not specifically indicate that intercultural miscommunication directly impacts the equitable distribution of justice in Dane County, it did suggest that cultural contrasts may be one variable contributing to the inequitable distribution of justice.

Seo, Seonae. "Intercultural-intergenerational conflict experienced by Korean-Canadian mothers." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1415.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to obtain cross-cultural insights into the family dynamics of Korean-Canadians during their transitions as immigrants, by asking six Korean-Canadian mothers about the family conflicts they had with their children, that were of an intercultural nature. The methodology consisted of a qualitative research design, informed by a post-positivist epistemological viewpoint. In semi-structured interviews, six Korean-Canadian mothers spoke at length about what triggered their Intercultural-Intergenerational conflict with their adolescent children, about how they responded to such conflicts, and about how they saw these conflicts in terms of their children’s cultural adaptation/identity. Audiotapes of the interviews were transcribed, then coded and categorized according to principles of thematic analysis and grounded theory. To ensure authenticity, reflexivity was built into all stages of the research. From the categories analyzed, there emerged six general triggers of conflict, (such as the adolescents’ style of communicating with their mothers, or the mothers’ attitudes to their children’s “culture shedding”); five general ways in which the mothers tended to respond to conflict (from emotional outbursts to attempts at adjusting); and three measures of what, for the mothers, constituted satisfactory adaptation, by the children, to the host culture (success in school, retention of Korean identity, and the ability to cope with any racism that they might encounter). The study concludes with some suggestions for a more sophisticated social work praxis, and for service provision that reaches beyond a purely economic understanding of immigrants’ problems, as the findings speak to a high degree of complexity in a shifting immigrant demographic.

Abstract:
The Millennial Generation is a young generation now required to effectively and efficiently navigate the cultural diversity that they encounter in various group settings throughout the United States. Research has examined conflict management styles and intercultural sensitivity, but few studies have investigated these two concepts specifically within the Millennial Generation. The purpose of this study is to fill the gap that exists in the current literature through an examination of the relationship between intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles within the Millennial Generation in a hypothetical intercultural group setting. The results from 221 participants indicate that positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles, Millennials show a preference for conflict management styles that reflect a concern for self, and Millennials report high Interaction Confidence and low Respect for Cultural Difference. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:
Intercultural conflict is often propagated and sustained through an avid defense of opposing cultural views, both religious and nationalistic, that moral community members are ready to defend even at the cost of their own lives. Such group-defining sacred values or extremely overvalued beliefs are only poorly understood in terms of their neurobiological substrate, with no neuroimaging studies conducted in the context of real intercultural conflict. This is the first neuroimaging study aimed to identify the neural mechanisms underlying willingness to fight and die (WFD) in defense of sacred values (SVs). Moreover, it is the first to assess sacred values in a real-world sample of Muslim Pakistani males recruited in the area of Barcelona (Spain), who expressed radicalized political views with respect to the Kashmiri conflict. A functional magnetic resonance paradigm was employed to evaluate both the neural activity associated with WFD for sacred values and the effect of social influence on the same measure, thus assessing post-manipulation moral outrage reactions and possible induced differences in WFD ratings. As a result, WFD for SVs elicited neural activity in areas associated with deontic thinking, affective appraisal of self-relevant content and self-agency (vmPFC/vACC), and decreased activity in neural nodes associated with utilitarian reasoning, deliberation and introspection (dmPFC, dlPFC, IFG). In turn, conflicting social feedback elicited moral outrage responses, which predicted activity in the parietal operculum, associated with pain and disgust. However, WFD ratings were sensitive to social influence, changing in the direction established by the norm. These results suggest that WFD for SVs is primarily driven by affective-laden self-enhancing motives that presumably respond to social expectations, pointing at acts of extreme altruism as social validation tools conferring feelings of personal empowerment. Support for different de-radicalization approaches is discussed in the end.

Abstract:
Here, I bring communication theories into conversation with peace and conflict scholarship. Specifically, I explore how the ways in which women narrate their experiences of violent conflict through sewing collectives can inform conflict transformation work. I engage in this exploration within the framework of narrative theory, using Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic pentad to analyze the narratives presented in a selection of textile pieces created by women in Chile, South Africa, and Northern Ireland. I situate this project within literature pertaining to feminist approaches to rhetoric, discussions of bridgework in identity negotiation from intercultural communication, concerns related to conflict transformation, and work with socially engaged art. Finally, I bring these analyses into conversation with one another to consider how women rhetors may inform conflict transformation through their textile work. In particular, I discuss how each of these rhetors offers the narrative elements to reconstitute collective identities, providing an avenue toward peace in their own settings.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the negative influence that cultural friction areas can promote on intercultural contacts. First, we expose the critical incident method like cross-cultural training model (Arthur, 2001). Then we show the negative effects that sensitive cultural zones can exert on the formation of prejudices and stereotypes about culturally diverse groups, analyzing 77 critical incidents collected in two different formative contexts. The main cultural shock areas detected are a) intercultural communication barriers, b) gender roles, and c) the cultural expressions statement. Strategies to improve the method validity are proposed.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the conflict situations of two filmed and transcribed interactions between Brazilians and Germans, males and females. It analyzes the way of realization of the occurring conflicts from a linguistic level, regarding verbal elements (such as negative words, hedges and interjections) and non-verbal ones (such as intonation, gestures, facial expressions) as well from a relational level, regarding strategies that concern the harmony of interaction. The linguistic elements and relational strategies can mitigate or intensify the effects of conflicts. The preferences for the use of these elements and strategies rely on cultural influences as well as on other possible factors, like individual characteristics. The results reveal different styles according to the cultural background and sex of the participants, outlining German, Brazilian, male and female styles. German men for instance manifest a competitive conflict style, with low use of mitigating elements, whereas Brazilian men reveal an avoiding style, with higher use of mitigating elements and strategies concerning the harmony of interaction. On the other side, Brazilian and German women manifest an integrative style, with concern for listening to different points of view and an even higher use of mitigating elements. These differences show that not only the nationality but also the gender of the participants can shape the way they express themselves and behave. Moreover, they show the importance of considering a broader view for the investigation of cultural tendencies, regarding the belonging to different cultural groups and individual characteristics.

This study analisys the territorial and socio-environmental conflicts affecting the Guarani and the Kaiowá indigenous people from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, seeking to identify potential lessons to derive Environmental Education practices based on intercultural reflextions, approaches, methodolgies and epistemic options. The empiric dimension of this research dealt with the Guarani and the Kaiowá indigenous people narratives about the conflicts they are involved involved in. Their narratives expressed a more inclusive cosmology in which the agency is not exclusively a human prerrogative. Taking into consideration the Guarani and the Kaiwá indigenous people narratives, this study stresses the tensions between the instrumental racionality (the hegemonic model of development), which triggers ethnocide and ecocide processes, and the Guarani and the Kaiwá cosmology, in which expresses and recognises otherness in nature (implying that nature is also a being, a relative). In this way, in the first part of the dissertation we introduce the territorial and socio-environmental conflicts that affect the Guarani and the Kaiwá indigenous people and the impact they bear upon their physical integrity, and their symbolic and material production. Subsequently, we introduce this conflict’s complexity showing how today’s socio-environmental problems, that constitute the ecological and civilizational crisis in a global scale, come to life expressing a death culture in a local scale. In the third part of the dissertation we seek to show that it is possible to potentialise the political dimention and update the environmental education epistemic approach through a study of an emblematic case in which the capitalist development’s externatilities and contraditions take unhuman proportions. From a decolonial standpoint, we defend two perspectives. First, the relevance of socioenvironmental educational experiences based on empiric studies. That is, the systematic study of territorial and socio-environmental conflicts that brings to surface the relationship between the western notion of progress and ecologic crisis. Second, the need to embrace other kinds of knowledge (such as the Kaiowá wisdom, that transmit other possible worlds and society/nature relationships based on cooperation and reciprocity) beyond the fundamentals of Education and socio-environmental critics, rendering Environmental Education an Intercultural Environmental education. In this way, we see possibilities to revisit the Environmental Education’s theoretical and methodological foundations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In order to improve international student enrolment, universities have to tackle challenges of ensuring satisfying experience of enrolled international students that is perceived to greatly impact future recruitment. Accordingly, this research aims to provide valuable insights into Chinese international students’ cultural identity conflict that hinders their obtainment of a positive overseas experience. An online survey assessing a range of predictors of cultural identity conflict involving personality traits, ethnic and host cultural identity strength, intergroup factors and strategies of negotiating ethnic and host cultures, and how identity conflict and various identity negotiation strategies influence intercultural competence, was distributed to the entire pool of Chinese students enrolled in a New Zealand university and an Australian university. A total of 255 students completed the survey. Multiple regression analysis revealed that conscientiousness, secure attachment, commitment to ethnic identity, low perceived discrimination, easy access to academic activities with host students significantly protected Chinese students from experiencing cultural identity conflict, whereas preoccupied and fearful attachment, assimilation strategy increased the risk of identity conflict. Additionally, Alternation between cultural demands as one of variations of integration strategy was surprisingly found to exacerbate identity conflict and led to lower levels of intercultural sensitivity, while the other variation, blending strategy significantly resulted in greater intercultural sensitivity. Managerial implications for educational institutions were discussed based on these results. To advance this field of study, limitations of the current research and future research avenues were also presented.

Abstract:
Many colleges and universities throughout the United States have a long history of encouraging and maintaining a diverse community of international students and scholars on their campuses. As a result of the interaction within this great mix of cultures, interpersonal conflict of an intercultural nature has understandably developed. To cope with the conflicts between cultures, many institutions have developed intercultural mediation programs and resources. This research examines what some U.S. universities do to respond to the issue of international student and scholar intercultural conflict mediation and resolution. The study was designed to explore the different types of resources and services that have been developed and to study some of them in greater detail to gain a better understanding of their approaches and resulting issues and successes. The overall objective of this research was to learn how the various ways mediation programs offered at the selected universities work in practice. The literature review was created to gain an overall understanding of conflict styles and conflict resolution approaches that are relevant to the many cultural groups who are in need of the mediation. My data collection process focused on how colleges and universities incorporate mediation programs into the campus at large. Data was gathered through 12 interviews with administrators who have experience working in the intercultural conflict mediation and resolution area; these programs were at the Universities of Washington and Minnesota, and Nevada, Reno and Michigan. From the interviews and the literature review, an annotated bibliography and guidelines were created to provide insights and recommendations for consideration by intercultural conflict mediation and resolution programs at educational institutions throughout the United States.

Abstract:
For a cross-cultural comparison of context influences in ethnicity encoding, two variations of the Memory Confusion Protocol (MCP) were applied on Brazilians. Both variations consist in a slide-show exposition of a discussion between two rival teams, with black and white players on both sides, in two forms: Control (teams with identical grey colour) and Experimental (teams with different colours). The two variations were: Translated Only, with photographs of basketball players used in the original experiment, and the respective translated dialog; and Adapted, with photographs of Brazilian models with soccer uniforms and a re-elaborated dialog, more fitting to this sport. The research was divided, then, in three different phases: (I) a 84 participants experiment with the Translated MCP, in the state of São Paulo (II) a 569 participants experiment with the Translated MCP, in seven different Brazilian states (BA, ES, MT, RJ, RN, SC, SP); and (III) a 77 participants experiment with the Adapted MCP, in the state of São Paulo. In Phase I, the ethnicity encoding, contrary to the original experiment (Kurzban et al., 2001), accompanied the intensity grown of the coalition encoding. In Phase II ethnicity encoding lowered in intensity during a the raise of intensity of coalition encoding, but coalition encoding kept a lower intensity, in both conditions, if compared to the original experiment coalition encoding rates. In Phase III, the results of both dimensions are analogue to those of the Kurzban et al., 2001 experiment. The data obtained strengthens the theory of a universal coalition encoding module, and encoding ethnicity as a byproduct of it. The data also reveals the importance of a carefully planned adaptation in order to run cross-cultural studies.

Abstract:
Title: Factors that affect conflict in a cultural diversified workforce in the shipping industry: The case of the shipping company Seascope Level: Master thesis in Business Administration Author: Ioannis Siarapis Supervisor: Maria Fregidou-Malama Examiner: Akmal Hyder Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate factors that affect conflict in a workforce characterized by cultural diversification in the shipping industry. Methodology: A qualitative approach was used. The primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten employees who were interviewed both on the yacht and in the on-shore office of the company. In order to generalize the results from the case study, the inductive approach was used. Thematic analysis was also my approach for finding different patterns in the empirical findings Findings: There are different factors that affect conflict either by enhancing it or by eliminating it. These are the differences in cultural values, differences in communication, continues feedback to the employees, establishment of a “family” climate and the general management of cultural diversity. In addition, when the employees in high positions are from the same background with the owners, this reduces the possibility of conflict. Limitations: The research was based on a Greek company with approximately 10 employees working on the yacht. Therefore, the current limitation is the relatively small number of employees comparing to big ship companies. Contribution: The managers of shipping companies should consider these factors and act accordingly for the benefit of the company. There are significant differences in the employees’ behavior when they are coming from a different cultural background. Moreover, there are differences in the way they communicate. Key words:  intercultural communication, yacht, conflict, cultural diversity management, shipping industry.

Abstract:
The major goal of the study was to compare play, conflicts and teasing in four to fiveyears- old children of two cultural groups: one from a big city (São Paulo), and another from a small seashore community (Ubatuba, São Paulo State). Children were observed in free play periods at school yard. The main findings concerning play were: São Paulos children engaged in more pretend play than seashores children, and these ones showed greater participation in games with rules and in social contingency play; boys engaged in more physical contingency activities than girls, while girls participated in more social contingency play than their male peers. Non-verbal teasing prevailed in seashore children, and teasing episodes had more frequent positive interational outcomes, although negative consequences were also found in the two groups. Children from both cultural groups presented equivalent number of conflicts and engaged in more same-sex disagreements, but the number of conflict turns was greater among São Paulos girls. Possession of objects and toys was the main conflict reason. Seashore children presented more simple and direct conflict strategies, and São Paulos children, more diversified and verbal tactics of conflict management. Contend resolutions had a predominantly affiliative character in both groups. In the discussion of data, play group configuration, as well as broader cultural dimensions such as rearing styles and communication codes , are emphasized, showing the importance of cross-cultural studies for advances in understanding childhood behavior

Abstract:
The relationship between Black Americans and African immigrants can be described in many ways, and one of those descriptions is distant. Due to a number of reasons, relationships between the two ethnic groups sometimes result in dissociation. In understanding the dissociation between Black Americans and African immigrants, this study takes a look at cultural identity, ethnic identity, avowal and ascription, and how they connect to the issue of dissociation between the two ethnic groups. This study uses social identity theory and mediated intergroup conflict as its theoretical foundation. Narrative approach and grounded theory approach are used as the study’s methodological approaches, and the study also analyzes its findings using three phases of data analysis; memo-writing analysis, narrative analysis, and hermeneutic analysis. Only a few studies concerning the dissociation between Black Americans and African immigrants have been conducted, and it is this study’s objective to add to the current literature. It is important to note that this study is an exploratory research on the dissociation between the two ethnic groups. Overall, the study’s findings indicate that the dissociation between Black Americans and African immigrants is due to the cultural differences between the two ethnic groups and how those differences are communicated.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the complicated and still little-known role of the interpreters in conflict zones. After a brief overview of the figure of the community interpreters, the thesis focuses on the interpreters in conflict zones, local civilians who risk their lives every day in the front line in order to help the Western countries in war. This dissertation shows the danger interpreters face because of their job: they are seen as traitors by their fellow citizens, the Taliban and other insurgent groups and for this reason they are hunted and killed. The purpose of this thesis is to show that Western countries are not doing enough to protect these interpreters, and in particular the United States' case will be analyzed: this country does not offer interpreters the right protection backing exchange, leaving them in the hands of the enemy once the US troops have finished their mission. The latter part of the dissertation presents the main organizations and international projects aimed at helping interpreters who are still trapped in their countries.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, I examine the existing literature and carry out a qualitative exploration in order to formulate a better understanding of the dynamics that influence the lives of 2nd generation Italian Muslims. Although monumental social and political challenges remain in confronting integration of the Muslim population and for achieving greater acceptance of Islam within the Italian public sphere, the evidence suggests that the process for integration has slowly begun. Additionally, this study examines the intellectual framework of the existing literature which addresses the issues impacting Muslim integration in Northern Italy. This issue has induced new debates within Italy on multiculturalism, national identity, human rights, while more importantly raising the question--"to what extent do we allow Muslim integration into Italian society and the further insertion of Islam into Italy's spiritual geography?" This study argues that the convergence of contemporary international affairs with religion calls for a new lens for interaction. In Italy the events following 9/11, combined with a resurgence of Islamophobia and the impact of the Global War on Terror, have drawn the issue of Muslim immigrants into a negative spotlight. Mainstream attitudes in Europe, following 9/11, have generated a rift in Muslim-West relations and have caused confusion and anxiety among Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The research hypothesis for this thesis suggests that there are multiple factors impeding the efforts for Muslims to achieve equal footing within the Italian religious landscape and inclusion within Italian society. Among these are divisions found within the Muslim community itself, a growing mistrust of Islam in mainstream Italian society, sponsored by negative media stereotyping and xenophobic political movements, and underlying everything else, the privileged position of the Catholic Church and its unwillingness to accommodate Islamic identity within the social framework. The chosen methodology employed in this study is qualitative, theoretical contextual analysis combined with interviews plus questionnaires used to construct a case study were applied. Beyond engaging in seven interviews with the 2nd generation Italian Muslims, this study was informed by the relevant academic literature from the fields of conflict resolution, history, sociology, cultural studies, Islamic studies and political science. Finally this study contextualized the dynamics generating this conflict and examined the discontinuities this situation has created in the lives of Muslims in Italy. The exclusion of the Muslim population, coupled with the complex relationship between this cultural group and state, has led to the exploration within Italy of different models for integration. The findings of this study indicate that inequalities exist for the Muslim population of Northern Italy in their relation with the host nation and society. This further hampers the process of integration and generates further exclusion. Only profound rethinking of the Italian approach to integration will serve to adequately meet the needs of this marginalized population and fully incorporate them within Italian society.

The present dissertation accomplished a study about the emerging of the Cargo Cults in the dynamic of encounters and conflicts in Melanesia and Papua New Guinea s intercultural and colonial context. Its main aim was: 1) to analyse the colonization process and its impact on Melanesia and Papua New Guinea s society, culture and religions, emphasising the missionary actions, e 2) to make an approximation and reading of the Cargo Cults development through the historic relations that follows the encounter between occidental culture and traditional cultures . As methodological resource it conjugated the concepts of cultural negotiation , cultural translation , transculturality , cultural appropriation and syncretism , making a reading witch try to surpass the old binary s approaches of reflections that looked at the Western and Traditional societies as closed totalities. From the interpretation process of the research s composition, it was concluded that the colonial circumstance and the missionaries presence brought about a new reality, of conflict and constant cultural negotiation. Cargo Cults were seen as expression of that new reality. The research showed that in this cultural negotiation process there are losses, but also earnings to both sides

Abstract:
Iraqi and Afghan conflict interpreters are hired by the American Armed Forces to break down linguistic and cultural barriers between military personnel and local communities. Through an overview of their role and profession, this paper aims, on the one hand, to highlight the many struggles of conflict interpreters and, on the other, to provide a comprehensive image of conflict interpreters in order to elucidate the little-known profession. Using some of the available literature, data, and reports as well as some first-hand accounts, this paper first presents the conflict zones in Iraq and in Afghanistan then discusses the need for conflict interpreters in those areas. Once the distinction of the different categories of conflict interpreters is drawn, the paper focuses on locally recruited interpreters and the risks and concerns their profession entails. Analysis of this information demonstrates that conflict interpreters are a necessity. They must endure the dangerous nature of their profession, which ultimately pushes them to look for a better life in the country of their employer. With the US government providing little to no assistance so that their foreign employees can obtain a US Visa, conflict interpreters either look on to NGOs or are left to fend for themselves.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is the study of the social history of Ceuta and Melilla, by means of the analysis of intercultural relationships. Overall, two mainstream communities will be analysed: a Spanish heritage community, mainly Catholic and a Moroccan heritage community of Muslin religion. Three approaches have been taken in order to study this social history: 1) a sociohistorical approach of the intercultural relationships between the two communities; 2) a socio-political approach to analyse identity, demographic data and nationalism; 3) a sociolinguistic approach for the analysis of stereotypes and the construction of identity, as well as linguistic and intercultural representations. Our research question is the following: how intercultural relationships in Ceuta and Melilla are constructed not only diachronically (historically) but also synchronically (today), at social, politic and linguistic levels?

Abstract:
Recognizing that no single discipline or institute alone can find solutions to global challenges, a shift toward interconnected and global research approaches is occurring, thus increasing the number of collaborative research initiatives applying inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches. This is mirrored not just in the global development agenda (Agenda 2030) but also in the funding policies of national and international public funding bodies. While there is awareness for the grand challenges and institutional structures facilitating joint action, little attention is given to the operational details. However, this is essential, as research collaborations in sustainable development are complex organizational settings prone to conflict, made up of diverse members from multiple countries, institutions, and disciplines. To prevent destructive conflict, including complete project failure, research on collaborative team work, as well as tools to facilitate collaboration and project success, is needed. Effectively functioning projects can find solutions to grand societal challenges. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to facilitate the operational functioning of transdisciplinary research projects by analyzing the design and effects of a conflict management system in such a research environment. Because it exemplifies the complexity of collaborative research projects, a transdisciplinary research project on food security serves as the case study. This dissertation not only helps close the knowledge gap on how transdisciplinary research projects operate, but it also advances research on conflict management systems by transferring the approach to a new type of organization.

Binder, Heidi A. "Cultural fluency in the eye of the storm : a mediation case study." Scholarly Commons, 2012. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/800.

Full text
Abstract:
The eye of the storm is the calm center amidst chaos where, metaphorically speaking, mediators often begin their work. Recent research has advocated for a more holistic, relational, culturally inclusive approach to the mediation process. Such an approach requires conflict fluency as well as cultural fluency for effective mediation. This thesis explores how the intervention strategies of mediation may be enhanced through increased cultural understanding. Current theories of intercultural conflict transformation and intercultural communication are reviewed. Conflict fluency is understood through a mediation perspective. Cultural fluency is understood through cultural identity, cultural values, communication styles, and conflict styles. A case study follows the theoretical review of the literature. In this case study, a small community mediation center illustrates what is happening in the field today regarding the relationship between culture and conflict. The case study involves a 6 holistic analysis of the organization, seeking to understand intercultural competence at all levels. This includes an analysis of keystone materials, a survey of mediators, Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) results, and interviews with mediators as well as organizational leadership. The thesis concludes with a list of recommendations that may be useful to this community mediation center as well as other similar organizations. Amongst these recommendations are potentially useful training items such as intercultural conflict styles, critical moment dialogues, and other intercultural tools designed to increase mediator competence in intercultural communication.

Abstract:
This exploratory and original research project examined the Cultural Mapping & Navigation Assessment (CMN) in order to evaluate it as an intercultural training tool. This instrument was designed by KnowledgeWorkx's multicultural team to assist people in understanding cultural dimensions and developing cultural self-awareness, which are foundational to a person developing intercultural competence. The instrument was evaluated in several ways. The theoretical constructs being measured were reviewed in the literature. The questions used in the CMN were subjected to multilingual and multicultural reviewers and the instrument was statistically analyzed for reliability and validity. Based on that data, changes were made and the revised instrument was administered to a new group. Unstructured interviews were conducted with 10 of the respondents and analyzed for three themes: the degree to which respondents thought their CMN results 4 reflected them; the effects on the participants' cultural self-awareness; and helpfulness as identified by the participants. According to the interviews, the desired outcomes of in creased cultural self- and other-awareness were achieved, as was growth in understanding of cultural dimensions. Content validity is suggested by the strong theoretical foundation. Future research with a larger population will continue to provide important understanding of this valuable intercultural training tool. Finally, information is provided regarding CMN availability, training, support, and cost in order to make it easy for trainers and consultants to evaluate the instrument for their purposes.

Abstract:
In a context of internationalization of large retailers and increased exchanges between companies from diverse countries and cultures, the issue of mutual adjustment between local suppliers in host countries and foreign retailers is essential. This research focuses on this issue. We analyze conflict and adjustment mechanisms between retailers and suppliers in the host country, in the case of Vietnam. Our analysis outlines the determinants and consequences of conflict on the satisfaction of stakeholders, considering culture as a key variable. Four theoretical fields have been mobilized: behavioral theories in the distribution channel, contract, culture and market orientation theories. A quantitative study was conducted to test the hypothesis of our dyadic model. The results indicate that the culture organizational remains a key variable in explaining conflict, its determinants, methods of resolution and impact on stakeholders’ satisfaction
