Full textThe present work proposes to account for cultural variability in connection to human family organization, through Darwins theories of natural selection and sexual selection. It is also founded on evidence based on the comparison of ethnographic data of diverse human societies. It intends to demonstrate that there is a significant alteration in the behavior of family members when the rules of inheritance of wealth change. These alterations are triggered because the rules of inheritance dictate the MPI Male Parental Investment sometimes in the nephew and sometimes in the son. The hypothesis is that this variation in MPI (male investment in either the nephew or the son) modifies family relations in matrilineal and patrilineal organizations in a predictable manner. The role played by MPI in determining family tensions will be shown by applying cross cultural analysis to the data obtained from HRAF (Human Relations Area Files), using PSF (Probability Sample Files). The results of the present work show that societies in which the uncles relation with his nephew is affectionate, the husband beats the wife; on the other hand, when the fathers relation with his son is indulgent and friendly, brother and sister avoid each other. This variability of behavior can be coherently explained by sociobiological theory. Cultural wealth: the innumerable customs, the traditions, the taboos, the manifest and hidden norms, the apparatus of coercion, the rules of inheritance, marriage, dowry, bride price, the division of labor, in short, all the rules observed in all human groups can be explained in the light of the following theories: a) kinship selection (Hamilton, 1963); b) reciprocal altruism (Trivers, 1971; Axelrod, 1981); c) parental investment and sexual selection (Trivers, 1972); and d) parentoffspring conflict (Trivers, 1974).

Full textThis research focuses on the analysis of the Colombian multiculturalism through an operative characterization. In this sense, the assessment of multicultural policies goes beyond the traditional discourse analysis, and instead it empirically reviews the implementation of differential rights translated into concrete public policies. To meet this goal, this study first explores the different symbolic schemes of the relationship between the State-Nation and the indigenous populations. In a second stage, it analyses how the policies that recognize cultural difference since 1991, are articulated with a project of state modernization of neoliberal characteristics, that is exemplified by the territorial decentralization phenomena. Finally, this research presents an analysis of the actual effects of multiculturalism in the fields of health, education, economic production and political governance for the Misak people, specifically for the Resguardo Mayor de Guambia, an indigenous reserve located in the department of Cauca. From this case study, readers will be able to discover how in the Colombian context, there are un-meet aspects (des-encuentros) and paradoxical effects between the Government’s neoliberal vision on public policies, the dynamics of ethnic recognition promoted by the state and the communitarian autonomous processes advocated by indigenous organizations

As the scale and scope of multinational corporations continue to expand, more and more Chinese companies enter the Portuguese market. But at the same time, cultural differences between countries, regions and nationalities have created cultural conflicts, which means that a central challenge for companies and business managers. Since culture and economy are interdependent and inseparable, it is necessary to pay more attention to cultural differences, and proper management strategies of cultural conflicts could solve the possible losses caused by cultural differences. Therefore, this dissertation uses the case of a Chinese acquisition company - Bison Bank in Portugal, uses the qualitative research methodology to analyze the impact of the host country's national culture on its organizational culture and the implications of this influence on cross-cultural management.

Full textIntercultural conflict is often propagated and sustained through an avid defense of opposing cultural views, both religious and nationalistic, that moral community members are ready to defend even at the cost of their own lives. Such group-defining sacred values or extremely overvalued beliefs are only poorly understood in terms of their neurobiological substrate, with no neuroimaging studies conducted in the context of real intercultural conflict. This is the first neuroimaging study aimed to identify the neural mechanisms underlying willingness to fight and die (WFD) in defense of sacred values (SVs). Moreover, it is the first to assess sacred values in a real-world sample of Muslim Pakistani males recruited in the area of Barcelona (Spain), who expressed radicalized political views with respect to the Kashmiri conflict. A functional magnetic resonance paradigm was employed to evaluate both the neural activity associated with WFD for sacred values and the effect of social influence on the same measure, thus assessing post-manipulation moral outrage reactions and possible induced differences in WFD ratings. As a result, WFD for SVs elicited neural activity in areas associated with deontic thinking, affective appraisal of self-relevant content and self-agency (vmPFC/vACC), and decreased activity in neural nodes associated with utilitarian reasoning, deliberation and introspection (dmPFC, dlPFC, IFG). In turn, conflicting social feedback elicited moral outrage responses, which predicted activity in the parietal operculum, associated with pain and disgust. However, WFD ratings were sensitive to social influence, changing in the direction established by the norm. These results suggest that WFD for SVs is primarily driven by affective-laden self-enhancing motives that presumably respond to social expectations, pointing at acts of extreme altruism as social validation tools conferring feelings of personal empowerment. Support for different de-radicalization approaches is discussed in the end.

This study analisys the territorial and socio-environmental conflicts affecting the Guarani and the Kaiowá indigenous people from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, seeking to identify potential lessons to derive Environmental Education practices based on intercultural reflextions, approaches, methodolgies and epistemic options. The empiric dimension of this research dealt with the Guarani and the Kaiowá indigenous people narratives about the conflicts they are involved involved in. Their narratives expressed a more inclusive cosmology in which the agency is not exclusively a human prerrogative. Taking into consideration the Guarani and the Kaiwá indigenous people narratives, this study stresses the tensions between the instrumental racionality (the hegemonic model of development), which triggers ethnocide and ecocide processes, and the Guarani and the Kaiwá cosmology, in which expresses and recognises otherness in nature (implying that nature is also a being, a relative). In this way, in the first part of the dissertation we introduce the territorial and socio-environmental conflicts that affect the Guarani and the Kaiwá indigenous people and the impact they bear upon their physical integrity, and their symbolic and material production. Subsequently, we introduce this conflict’s complexity showing how today’s socio-environmental problems, that constitute the ecological and civilizational crisis in a global scale, come to life expressing a death culture in a local scale. In the third part of the dissertation we seek to show that it is possible to potentialise the political dimention and update the environmental education epistemic approach through a study of an emblematic case in which the capitalist development’s externatilities and contraditions take unhuman proportions. From a decolonial standpoint, we defend two perspectives. First, the relevance of socioenvironmental educational experiences based on empiric studies. That is, the systematic study of territorial and socio-environmental conflicts that brings to surface the relationship between the western notion of progress and ecologic crisis. Second, the need to embrace other kinds of knowledge (such as the Kaiowá wisdom, that transmit other possible worlds and society/nature relationships based on cooperation and reciprocity) beyond the fundamentals of Education and socio-environmental critics, rendering Environmental Education an Intercultural Environmental education. In this way, we see possibilities to revisit the Environmental Education’s theoretical and methodological foundations.

Full textFor a cross-cultural comparison of context influences in ethnicity encoding, two variations of the Memory Confusion Protocol (MCP) were applied on Brazilians. Both variations consist in a slide-show exposition of a discussion between two rival teams, with black and white players on both sides, in two forms: Control (teams with identical grey colour) and Experimental (teams with different colours). The two variations were: Translated Only, with photographs of basketball players used in the original experiment, and the respective translated dialog; and Adapted, with photographs of Brazilian models with soccer uniforms and a re-elaborated dialog, more fitting to this sport. The research was divided, then, in three different phases: (I) a 84 participants experiment with the Translated MCP, in the state of São Paulo (II) a 569 participants experiment with the Translated MCP, in seven different Brazilian states (BA, ES, MT, RJ, RN, SC, SP); and (III) a 77 participants experiment with the Adapted MCP, in the state of São Paulo. In Phase I, the ethnicity encoding, contrary to the original experiment (Kurzban et al., 2001), accompanied the intensity grown of the coalition encoding. In Phase II ethnicity encoding lowered in intensity during a the raise of intensity of coalition encoding, but coalition encoding kept a lower intensity, in both conditions, if compared to the original experiment coalition encoding rates. In Phase III, the results of both dimensions are analogue to those of the Kurzban et al., 2001 experiment. The data obtained strengthens the theory of a universal coalition encoding module, and encoding ethnicity as a byproduct of it. The data also reveals the importance of a carefully planned adaptation in order to run cross-cultural studies.

Full textThe major goal of the study was to compare play, conflicts and teasing in four to fiveyears- old children of two cultural groups: one from a big city (São Paulo), and another from a small seashore community (Ubatuba, São Paulo State). Children were observed in free play periods at school yard. The main findings concerning play were: São Paulos children engaged in more pretend play than seashores children, and these ones showed greater participation in games with rules and in social contingency play; boys engaged in more physical contingency activities than girls, while girls participated in more social contingency play than their male peers. Non-verbal teasing prevailed in seashore children, and teasing episodes had more frequent positive interational outcomes, although negative consequences were also found in the two groups. Children from both cultural groups presented equivalent number of conflicts and engaged in more same-sex disagreements, but the number of conflict turns was greater among São Paulos girls. Possession of objects and toys was the main conflict reason. Seashore children presented more simple and direct conflict strategies, and São Paulos children, more diversified and verbal tactics of conflict management. Contend resolutions had a predominantly affiliative character in both groups. In the discussion of data, play group configuration, as well as broader cultural dimensions such as rearing styles and communication codes , are emphasized, showing the importance of cross-cultural studies for advances in understanding childhood behavior

The present dissertation accomplished a study about the emerging of the Cargo Cults in the dynamic of encounters and conflicts in Melanesia and Papua New Guinea s intercultural and colonial context. Its main aim was: 1) to analyse the colonization process and its impact on Melanesia and Papua New Guinea s society, culture and religions, emphasising the missionary actions, e 2) to make an approximation and reading of the Cargo Cults development through the historic relations that follows the encounter between occidental culture and traditional cultures . As methodological resource it conjugated the concepts of cultural negotiation , cultural translation , transculturality , cultural appropriation and syncretism , making a reading witch try to surpass the old binary s approaches of reflections that looked at the Western and Traditional societies as closed totalities. From the interpretation process of the research s composition, it was concluded that the colonial circumstance and the missionaries presence brought about a new reality, of conflict and constant cultural negotiation. Cargo Cults were seen as expression of that new reality. The research showed that in this cultural negotiation process there are losses, but also earnings to both sides

Full textThe objective of this thesis is the study of the social history of Ceuta and Melilla, by means of the analysis of intercultural relationships. Overall, two mainstream communities will be analysed: a Spanish heritage community, mainly Catholic and a Moroccan heritage community of Muslin religion. Three approaches have been taken in order to study this social history: 1) a sociohistorical approach of the intercultural relationships between the two communities; 2) a socio-political approach to analyse identity, demographic data and nationalism; 3) a sociolinguistic approach for the analysis of stereotypes and the construction of identity, as well as linguistic and intercultural representations. Our research question is the following: how intercultural relationships in Ceuta and Melilla are constructed not only diachronically (historically) but also synchronically (today), at social, politic and linguistic levels?

Full textRecognizing that no single discipline or institute alone can find solutions to global challenges, a shift toward interconnected and global research approaches is occurring, thus increasing the number of collaborative research initiatives applying inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches. This is mirrored not just in the global development agenda (Agenda 2030) but also in the funding policies of national and international public funding bodies. While there is awareness for the grand challenges and institutional structures facilitating joint action, little attention is given to the operational details. However, this is essential, as research collaborations in sustainable development are complex organizational settings prone to conflict, made up of diverse members from multiple countries, institutions, and disciplines. To prevent destructive conflict, including complete project failure, research on collaborative team work, as well as tools to facilitate collaboration and project success, is needed. Effectively functioning projects can find solutions to grand societal challenges. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to facilitate the operational functioning of transdisciplinary research projects by analyzing the design and effects of a conflict management system in such a research environment. Because it exemplifies the complexity of collaborative research projects, a transdisciplinary research project on food security serves as the case study. This dissertation not only helps close the knowledge gap on how transdisciplinary research projects operate, but it also advances research on conflict management systems by transferring the approach to a new type of organization.

Full textIn a context of internationalization of large retailers and increased exchanges between companies from diverse countries and cultures, the issue of mutual adjustment between local suppliers in host countries and foreign retailers is essential. This research focuses on this issue. We analyze conflict and adjustment mechanisms between retailers and suppliers in the host country, in the case of Vietnam. Our analysis outlines the determinants and consequences of conflict on the satisfaction of stakeholders, considering culture as a key variable. Four theoretical fields have been mobilized: behavioral theories in the distribution channel, contract, culture and market orientation theories. A quantitative study was conducted to test the hypothesis of our dyadic model. The results indicate that the culture organizational remains a key variable in explaining conflict, its determinants, methods of resolution and impact on stakeholders’ satisfaction
