IN THE BACKS of my mother's wartime diaries are long lists of the dates of letters written to and received from my reluctant soldier father, all neatly numbered to accord with some arcane requirement of the military mail. The letters have not survived: but the diaries, though little more than appointments books, were gathered into decennial sets and secured by long-perished rubber- bands. Trying to reconstruct a little of my early childhood from the names and places of those barebones jottings, I have often wondered why the diaries were felt to be so sacrosanct, while letters which exchanged emotions, shared feelings about war, Went uncherished and unkept. Of course, when the war came to an end, so did the letters.

There are many different types of places in any city. These places include playgrounds, dog runs, cultural heritage sites and many more. A city usually wants to provide information about location and equipment of these places. The common way is via a city website. However, nowadays a much more common source of information are mobile applications. This article deals with a development of a mobile application for the Brno‑North district of Brno city. The application is designed to inform the citizens of the city district about interesting places in their vicinity. The central element of the application is a map which shows where all the interesting places are located. The application is focused primarily on families; however, it can be useful for any citizen of the district.

Abstract:
AbstractIdentifying the interesting places through GPS trajectory mining has been well studied based on the visitor’s frequency. However, the places popularity estimation based on the trajectory analysis has not been explored yet. The limitation in the majority of the traditional popularity estimation and place user-rating based methods is that all the participants are given the same importance. In reality, it heavily depends on the visitor’s category, for example, international visitors make distinct impact on popularity. The proposed method maintains a registry to keep the information about the visited users, their stay time and the travel distance from their home location. Depending on the travel nature the visitors are labeled as native, regional and tourist for each place in question. It considers the fact that the higher stay in a place is an implicit measure of the greater likings. Theweighted frequency is eventually fuzzified and applied rule based fuzzy inference system (FIS) to compute popularity of the places in terms of the ratings ∈ [0, 5]. We have evaluated the proposed method using a large real road GPS trajectory of 182 users for identifying the ratings for the collected 26807 point of interests (POI) in Beijing (China).

Under the not very informative cover title of Munger Africana Library Notes 3, the library of that name published in 1971 a group of four French documents, collectively called The Choiseul papers, secret documents prepared for the peace negotiations to end the Seven Years' War in 1762/63. There is no indication as to the original authorship of these documents, except that the first, with a date of 6 January 1681, is noted as “sent on behalf of M. de Bussy.” The editor, Monique le Blanc, in her short introduction which places these documents in their historical setting, says that they were obtained from the family of the Duc de Nivernais, the French representative at the negotiations. The editor also notes that they were used in part by André Delcourt in his IFAN Memoire La France et les établissements français au Sénégal entre 1713 et 1763 (Dakar, 1952). The translator, James Greenlee, provides brief notes concerned mainly with the orthography of the copyists, who, he suggests, may in two cases have been Spanish. (Their French spelling is in some ways similar to that of Jean Barbot nearly a century earlier--were they, like him, from La Rochelle?)The purpose of the present brief note is both to draw attention to these documents, which are reproduced in facsimile (slightly reduced in size), but also, regretably, to warn those who wish to use them to beware of the translation which accompanies them. The documents consist of four secret mémoires--one entitled “first secret mémoire on the Coast of Africa”, dated 1761 (translated as “last secret communication…”), a second entitled “First secret mémoire on Senegal and the Island of Gorée,” followed by a second secret mémoire on Senegal and Gorée and a third secret mémoire on the west coast of Africa, forwarded to the Duc de Nivernais by the Comte de Choiseul, then Minister of Foreign Affairs.

This article is aimed to study the uniqueness of female character or heroine in Gillian Flynn’s novels entitled Dark Places (2009) dan Gone Girl (2012). The concept of heroin and gynocriticism approaches is used to examine the uniqueness of the main character in both novels. Amy Dunne in Gone Girl and Libby Day pada Dark Places can be considered as antiheroine. From the result of the analysis, it can be concluded that Flynn introduced an interesting female characterization. The anti-heroine characters are portrayed in an intriguing plot. She presents woman as offender and sexual manipulation interestingly. The exploration of feminine vulnerability to undermine the dominancy of masculine privilege has brought the themes of both novels to.

Effects of climate change lead to decreasing vitality and increase mortality risk for many native tree species growing under harsh environmental conditions in towns and cities. Taking into account the risks of invasiveness, practical management and scientific experience alternative species and rising floristic biodiversity may help to reduce vulnerability of urban green space. Regardless of the emotional debate considering foreign species, the potential of urban street tree species originating from China may be considered for European urban places in particular in regions with expected drier and hotter conditions. The selection of 40 commonly used Chinese tree species took as its starting point observations and local experiences of five research expeditions between 2009 and 2016 concentrating on the metropoles of Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Jinan, and Fuyang. For the considered species only little practical and scientific knowledge is available for Central Europe.

Whereas many economic theorists hold both time and space in abeyance so as to simplify their analytics, economic geographers are beginning to question the utility of these strategies. Three papers which propose alternative conceptions are reviewed, criticized, and compared. It is noted that all three papers place a great deal of emphasis on understanding spatial differentiation; as a process and as a theoretical category. However plausible these conceptions, it is also noted that theorising the role of time in urban and regional economic analysis is still in its infancy. Nevertheless, these papers provide a diverse and interesting beginning point for further research.

Abstract:
This paper presents a real case study to determine the optimal tourist route at Langkawi Island. The Langkawi Island was selected as thecase study because normally, tourist travel to this island will drive the rented car as the primary mode of transport. Thus, the aim of this paper is to develop a mathematical model to find an optimal route for tourist to travel to their interesting places around Langkawi Island. In order to solve the problem, Greedy method was applied in this study and MATLAB version 7.8 has been used to get the solution. The result obtained shows that Nearest Greedy Insertion method gives better result compared to the Nearest Greedy method. The minimum value of the route selection gives effect to the cost of travelling. Therefore, from this study, the best route that connect from one interesting place to others place can be suggested to the tourist as guidance. In addition, tourist can save their time and money to visit all interesting places in this study.

Abstract:
The paper presents a sparing approach to the tourist and recreation development on Lake Baikal. This is conditioned by several factors: lack of sufficient theoretical basis on the regional architecture, the participation of the government, federal programs and projects on the development of tourism as an important socioeconomic sphere; high pollution and the constantly deteriorating ecosystem of the lake. The aim of this work is to develop a concept (model) of sparingly developed tourist and recreation places on Lake Baikal, a choice of types and principles of placing objects and their main architectural and functional properties. The paper presents the analysis and synthesis of the data from the Federal Target Programs, literature, methodologies, regulatory and design materials on the problem. As a result, the proposed model of sparingly developed tourist and recreation places includes intensive, normal, moderate and promising development. The main principles for the object placement are based on the mobility of stationary objects from the coastline, creation of research centers responsible for constant ecosystem monitoring, and traditional and fishing centers. These solutions allow creating the functioning system of the tourist cluster, interesting tourist routes and their architectural and functional diversity.

Abstract:
Comfort and related perceptions are important in respect to use of outdoor public places. In a laboratory, 170 persons viewed four such places on slides and rated them on 10 dimensions, namely, “comfortable,” “playful,” “serious,” “active,” “unsafe,” “good,” “tense,” “interesting,” “gloomy,” and “pleasing.” Instructions were used to vary time of day and the number of people present at the location. It was found that women ( n = 96) regard outdoor environments as more threatening than do men ( n = 74) which suggests that women feel more vulnerable to untoward acts and that public places are rated less desirous at dusk than at dawn, presumably because dusk is followed by night and dawn by day. It was also discovered that such public environments are rated better than deserted places when occupied by two or more persons. Some of these results are consistent with the Prospect-Refuge Theory of Appleton.

If Mansfield decided to leave New Zealand for London to study, and for the second time to avoid the provincial climate at home, then the Slovenian travel writer Alma Karlin decided to leave Europe for Asia and New Zealand at roughly the same time as Mansfield arrived in the modemist literary Bloomsbury area in London. Toe publication of Mansfield's famous collection, I11e Carden Parti; and Other Ston·es (1922), and Karlin's travel book, Solitan; Journey (Die Einsame Weltreise, 1929), almost coincided, although the two women authors never met.

The study of linguistic interferences has been greatly extended lately. It comprises all language sections. In onomastics great attention was paid to to the study of macrotoponyms of foreign origin. I would like to mention in this respect the research concerning the toponyms of Slavic origin in Romania and Greece, the toponyms of Romance origin in Yugoslavia etc. The studies referring to the interferences in microtoponymy are more rare. These call for the collecting of all microtoponyms through inquiries made in plaees inhabited by mixed populetion from the ethnic point of view. The microtoponymy of these places off ers a very interesting material as far as the interactiong the reciprocal in.fluences of two or more toponymic systems is concerned.

Abstract:
- All too often architects and urban planners design and plan without taking account of how people will live and what they will experience in the places they create. The paper reports the experience of the course entitled ‘Analysis of urban space' in 2008-2009. The students and lecturers kept a diary based on ideas offered by artists, actors, directors and so on of the way in which they felt and sensed space: the space of listening, of contact and that of dreams. The work that emerged was very rich. It traced an unexpected and very interesting map of Milan and of the places in which they live: sadistic places, some praised by architecture journals; however, also attractive places, generally given little consideration. This experience is taken as an example of a method for assessing places and giving useful information to those called upon to plan and design them. It requires mutual trust and confidence in the capacities of one's body as a guide to assess the places you are in. Shared knowledge is created from the most personal experiences: right next to you, but generally inaccessible because not considered sufficiently cultured and academic.

This paper presents the Brute Force algorithm implementation for TravelJoy Travelling Recommendation System. Due to overwhelmed information in the internet, travelers faced difficulties in finding and comparing which places in Melaka that worth to visit. Melaka is a well-known place as one of the most popular tourist spots in Malaysia, famous with historical places. All the mentioned problems were time-consuming and required lots of efforts for manual comparison between places and planning the trip itinerary. An efficient application system is needed to assist travelers in planning their trip itinerary by providing details of interesting place in Melaka, budget estimating and recommendation of sequence places which to visit. The TravelJoy application applied Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) concept using Brute Force algorithm in determining the least time duration for the selected places and adapting Expected Time Arrival (ETA). It was found through Brute Force algorithm adaptation; the recommendation system is reliable based on the functional and reliability testing with t-test result of 0.00067, indicates the system is accepted.

In the particular case of the Christian itineraries, toponyms operate in two different levels: in the places of the biblical past that is meant to be recalled in the peregrination itself and in the places “truly” visited. This fact gives toponyms a very interesting “diversity”, not only from a cultural standpoint, but also because of all kinds of linguistic facts: phonetic, morphologic, syntactic, etc. These linguistic facts reflect the situation and evolution of late Latin, an aspect of which I am going to focus on the syntactic level.

Abstract:
Abstract The carried out pilot work on the concentration of rare earth elements (REE) in the Baltic marine sands from the Odra and Słupsk Banks showed that in some places their accumulations are quite interesting in terms of the placer deposits and may be the subject of an interesting prospecting project. The results of ICP-MS and electron microprobe (CAMECA SX-100) investigation confirm the close relationship of REE concentration to heavy minerals content in the sediments of marine sands. It is indicated, in addition to monazite, as a primary mineral carrier of rare earth elements. The vast preponderance of light REE is noted in the samples of heavy mineral concentrates from the Odra and Słupsk Banks as well as in the beach sand sample from the Hel Peninsula. The highest concentrations are achieved mainly by cerium and almost two times less by lanthanum. The total REE in the most interesting considered samples range from c.a. 0.14% (trench on the beach) to 0.9% (heavy minerals concentrate from the Odra Bank). The high contents of REE are accompanied by a high concentration of Th (900-150 ppm). Neodymium (0.1-0.17% Nd), whose presence is associated with the presence of pyrochlore and Nb-rutile also appears in the heavy minerals concentrate samples. It is necessary to systematically identify heavy minerals resources in the Baltic sands. More detailed research should cover the prospective areas situated to the North-East from the documented placer fields of the Odra Bank, as well as tentatively identified areas of the Słupsk Bank and submarine paleo-slope of the Hel Peninsula.

Shape-persistent conjugated macrocycles are challenging synthetic targets with interesting properties and potential for a number of applications. In contrast to the standard kinetic approaches to macrocycles, reversible Schiff-base condensation offers a one-step, thermodynamic route to large macrocycles. These macrocycles, which feature "salen"-type coordination environments and an interior that resembles a crown-ether have interesting properties themselves and are novel substrates for supramolecular chemistry. This short review article places conjugated [3+3] Schiff-base macrocycles in the context of shape-persistent macrocycles and discusses their synthesis. In addition, specific examples of supramolecular chemistry with these macrocycles highlight their unique behavior when compared to conjugated carbon-based macrocycles and flexible crown-ethers.

The repurposing of residential streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and other modest public spaces in neighborhoods shows an expansion of public space and sociability. This expansion is also that of agency. The elimination of events and programming and the cordoning off of standardized equipment has left public space in an unembellished state of bareness. Space is available for citizens to make public. This pandemic has revealed our desire for publicness of the everyday, our ingenuity to use spaces for public life, and what is possible in our cities and in our public spaces.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the three types of ethical consumption (positive, negative and discursive) simultaneously in three different geographical areas, namely, Hebron (PL), Sofia (BG) and Thessaloniki (GR). Design/methodology/approach Personal interviews were conducted in the three cities during autumn 2016 with the use of a structured questionnaire. Large enough samples were selected with the one-stage area sampling. The sampling unit was one adult person of all households in each randomly selected city block. Findings The consumers of all cities were not found frequently engaged in any ethical consumption type. Demographic analysis revealed extensive differences across each one of the behaviours in each one of the cities. Attitudinal and psychographic analyses indicated that consumers, who are less ethically disinterested and more generous, were found to be more frequently engaged in ethical purchase in all the three cities. Evidence was found that less ethically disinterested and more generous consumers are more likely to get engaged in boycotting calls, in Hebron and in Thessaloniki. Less ethically disinterested consumers were also found more active in discursive activities in Sofia and Thessaloniki. Research limitations/implications Certain amendments of the behavioural and attitudinal scales could be essential to ensure the same level of measurement accuracy in different geographical areas. Larger and more representative of the overall population samples are needed to facilitate the generalisation of the results. Examination of cultural and political perspectives might add to the understanding of consumers’ ethical consumption in different contexts. Practical implications Firms interested in adopting ethical strategies or consumer groups that would like to call a boycotting or a consumer activism campaign should address their communication strategies towards targets that are described by the results in regard to each geographical area. Originality/value This study added to the limited so far relevant knowledge about the simultaneous examination of the three types of the overall ethical consumption in three different cities; interesting differences and similarities were revealed.

Abstract:

Livability of places is set by many factors which are in turn influenced by a variety of elements - both tangible and intangible - concerning the area in question and its surroundings. One of these factors is constituted by urban happiness, which, together with the term sustainability meant in its wide meaning, constitutes a key concept in placemaking. In this respect, a new attention to urban happiness has been given but often in terms of theoretical sense or from an observational point of view. Aim of this study is to present the Happy place mapping, a method of analysis specifically devoted to the identification of factors that influence the perception of happiness from the urban point of view. To illustrate the method, the emblematic HafenCity case study carried out in Hamburg is showed. A long process of urban regeneration is interesting this area and the new public spaces are changing the identity of the city, making it more livable and agreeable both for locals and visitors. The discussion on questions related to methods that concern intangible aspects and on Happy place mapping conclude the paper.

Abstract:
This article describes how multi-criteria decision making problems are difficult to handle in normal SQL query processing. Skyline computation is generally used to solve these types of requirements by using dominance analysis and finding shortest distance with respect to a prime interesting point. However, in real life scenarios shortest distance may not be applicable in most of the cases due to different obstacles or barriers exist between the point of interests or places. In order to consider the presence of obstacles for geographically dispersed data, this research work uses Taxicab geometry for distance calculation, which is a simple Non-Euclidian geometry with minimum time complexity. Another limitation of previous skyline based works are that they only focus upon a single interesting point and can't be apply for multiple interesting points. This research article focuses upon multiple visiting points for the travelers in an optimized way. In addition to this, the article also selects areas for setting up of new business properties considering the constraints.

Abstract:
The International Dark-Sky Places (IDSP) program of the International Dark-Sky Association is a voluntary certification in which communities commit via legislative changes to move towards more sustainable lighting that reduces light pollution. As over 115 IDSP have now been certified, it is interesting to ask the extent to which this certification results in reduced light emissions. In this paper, we compared trends in upward light emission of 98 communities located in or near IDSP to those of 98 similarly sized communities further away from the IDSP, using a night lights observing satellite (the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day-Night Band). The current dataset is not sufficient to distinguish the hypothesis that IDSP certification results in a lower rate of change in upward light emissions from the null hypothesis that IDSP certification has no impact. This result is with regard to upward light emissions only: it is possible that certification has resulted in decreases in night sky brightness that the satellite is not able to observe.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the Norwegian medieval religious buildings called stave churches. The word stave (meaning ‘post, pole’ in Norwegian) derives from the buildings’ post and lintel construction, giving the churches their characteristic style. The structures display a highly developed tradition of wooden Christian buildings, which during the Middle Ages (1050–1500) where the most common in Norway, their number can be estimated at around a thousand. There were probably at least as widespread in other areas (e.g. on the territory of present-day Germany and Russia), but they did not remain in such a large number from the early period. However, the number have declined dramatically, and today only 28 are preserved. The article aims to expand the knowledge of the unique and irreplaceable wooden architecture of the stave churches. Although we consider the wooden churches to be one of the characteristics of Scandinavia traditionally, they mix and carry the influences of other cultures and countries. The heritage and memorial role of wooden churches, as well as the motif of the combination of different architectural and religious elements, represent an interesting comparison to similar phenomena in the Carpathian Basin. Transylvania and especially the Maramureş region are also famous for their wooden churches and the rich carved and painted iconostasis.

The article reveals the most important trends in the development of functional planning and spatial solutions of Christian parish Church complexes. The relevance of the topic is justified by the fact that modern tunneling complexes are not only places of religious practice, but also objects where educational, charitable, leisure and other activities of the parish can be carried out. Thus, a modern temple should be understood as a multifunctional complex, the design of which needs to develop special approaches. It is interesting to study the functional composition, planning structure, architectural and compositional solutions of parish complexes. Currently, the most widespread are multifunctional temple complexes of various directions, the figurative component of which is solved in the methods of innovative architecture. The task of designing them is extremely interesting and is solved in different ways by the professional architectural community.
