Abstract:
Objectives: Developing a search strategy for use in a systematic review is a time-consuming process requiring construction of detailed search strings using complicated syntax, followed by iterative fine-tuning and trial-and-error testing of these strings in online biomedical search engines. Methods: Building upon limitations of existing online-only search builders, a user-friendly computer-based tool was created to expedite search strategy development as part of production of a systematic review. Results: Search Builder 1.0 is a Microsoft Excel®-based tool that automatically assembles search strategy text strings for PubMed (www.pubmed.com) and Embase (www.embase.com), based on a list of user-defined search terms and preferences. With the click of a button, Search Builder 1.0 automatically populates the syntax needed for functional search strings, and copies the string to the clipboard for pasting into Pubmed or Embase. The offline file-based interface of Search Builder 1.0 also allows for searches to be easily shared and saved for future reference. Conclusions: This novel, user-friendly tool can save considerable time and streamline a cumbersome step in the systematic review process.

The Electronic Health Records for Clinical Research (EHR4CR) project aims to develop services and technology for the leverage reuse of Electronic Health Records with the purpose of improving the efficiency of clinical research processes. A pilot program was implemented to generate evidence of the value of using the EHR4CR platform. The user acceptance of the platform is a key success factor in driving the adoption of the EHR4CR platform; thus, it was decided to evaluate the user satisfaction. In this paper, we present the results of a user satisfaction evaluation for the EHR4CR multisite patient count cohort system. This study examined the ability of testers (n=22andn=16from 5 countries) to perform three main tasks (around 20 minutes per task), after a 30-minute period of self-training. The System Usability Scale score obtained was 55.83 (SD: 15.37), indicating a moderate user satisfaction. The responses to an additional satisfaction questionnaire were positive about the design of the interface and the required procedure to design a query. Nevertheless, the most complex of the three tasks proposed in this test was rated as difficult, indicating a need to improve the system regarding complicated queries.

<p>This paper presents an FPGA image segmentation-binarization system based on<em> </em>Iterative Self Organizing DATA <em>(ISODATA)</em> threshold using histogram analysis for embedded systems. The histogram module computes pixels levels statistics which are used by the ISODATA algorithm module to determine the segmentation threshold. In our case, this threshold binarizes a gray-scale image into two values 0 or 255. The prototype of the complete system uses an ALTERA CYCLONE-II DE2 kit with a lot of component and interfaces, such as the SD-CARD reader or a camera to read the image to be segmented, the FPGA which will implement the intellectual property (IP) core calculation with the NIOS processor, the VGA interface to view the results, and possibly of the ETHERNET interface for data transfer via internet. The use of FPGA contains the ISODATA, histogram, NIOS processor and others custom altera IPs hardware modules greatly improves processing speed and allows the binarization application to be embedded on a single chip. In recent years, the robot development has been fast expanding to many areas such as entertainment, home task, security, medical care, etc. Accordingly, this paper proposes a simple but reliable robot communication interface and local-loop control system based on RS232 and 8051 microprocessor, suitable use for various kinds of robot control. In this proposed scheme, the robot action commands stored in the database using C++ Builder can be transmitted from the Command-Transmission Microprocessor (CTM) and then received by the individual authorized Action-Processing Microprocessor (APM) via RS232. Real-time implementation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in term of robust, simple, flexible and efficient performance.

Abstract:
There are few sources from which to obtain clinical and genetic data for use in research in Saudi Arabia. Numerous obstacles led to the difficulty of integrating these data from silos and scattered sources to provide standardized access to large data sets for patients with common health conditions. To this end, we sought to contribute to this area and offer a practical and easy-to-implement solution. In this paper, we aim to design and implement a “not only SQL” (NoSQL) based integration framework to generate an Integrated Data Repository of Genetic Disorders Data (GENE2D) to integrate data from various genetic clinics and research centers in Saudi Arabia and provide an easy-to-use query interface for researchers to conduct their studies on large datasets. The major components involved in the GENE2D architecture consists of the data sources, the integrated data repository (IDR) as a central database, and the application interface. The IDR uses a NoSQL document store via MongoDB (an open source document-oriented database program) as a backend database. The application interface called Query Builder provides multiple services for data retrieval from the database using a custom query to answer simple or complex research questions. The GENE2D system demonstrates its potential to help grow and develop a national genetic disorders database in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:
This study investigates the semantic integration of data extracted from archaeological datasets with information extracted via natural language processing (NLP) across different languages. The investigation follows a broad theme relating to wooden objects and their dating via dendrochronological techniques, including types of wooden material, samples taken and wooden objects including shipwrecks. The outcomes are an integrated RDF dataset coupled with an associated interactive research demonstrator query builder application. The semantic framework combines the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) with the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT). The NLP, data cleansing and integration methods are described in detail together with illustrative scenarios from the web application Demonstrator. Reflections and recommendations from the study are discussed. The Demonstrator is a novel SPARQL web application, with CRM/AAT-based data integration. Functionality includes the combination of free text and semantic search with browsing on semantic links, hierarchical and associative relationship thesaurus query expansion. Queries concern wooden objects (e.g. samples of beech wood keels), optionally from a given date range, with automatic expansion over AAT hierarchies of wood types and specialised associative relationships. Following a ‘mapping pattern’ approach (via the STELETO tool) ensured validity and consistency of all RDF output. The user is shielded from the complexity of the underlying semantic framework by a query builder user interface. The study demonstrates the feasibility of connecting information extracted from datasets and grey literature reports in different languages and semantic cross-searching of the integrated information. The semantic linking of textual reports and datasets opens new possibilities for integrative research across diverse resources.

Abstract:
A proper use of design patterns has proven to be very useful in the development of robust applications over time. In this paper, the design patterns are introduced in the early stage of the software development where model-driven architecture is used as the engineering approach. A RESTful internet payment gateway API (Application Programming Interface) wrapper is selected as the case study. At the beginning, Platform Independent Model (PIM) is created as the domain model. After that, the PIM is transformed into the Platform Specific Model (PSM). Before converting the PSM into the source code, three design patterns such as builder, observer, and factory pattern are added into the model. To evaluate the impacts of implementation, static analysis is used to examine the generated code before and after adding the design patterns. The result shows that the design decision increases cohesion, complexity, coupling, inheritance, and size metrics of the source codes.

Abstract:
It is an expensive and time-consuming task to develop a new model. Furthermore, a single model often cannot provide answers required for complex decision making based on multiple criteria. Coupling models are often applied to make use of existing models and analyze complex policy questions. This paper provides an overview of possible model integration approaches, briefly explains the modules that were integrated in a particular application, and focuses on the integration methods applied in this research. While the initial attempt was to integrate all models as tightly as possible, the authors developed a much more agile integration approach that allows adding and replacing individual modules easily. Python wrappers were developed to loosely couple land use, land cover, transportation, and emission models developed in different environments. ArcGIS Model Builder was used to provide a graphical user interface and to present the models’ workflow. The suggested approach is especially efficient when the models are developed in different programming languages, their source codes are not available, or the licensing restrictions make other coupling approaches impractical.

Abstract:
Multi-modality image registration and fusion play an increasingly important role in medicine. 3-D image reconstruction, object recognition, and medical imaging analysis, are just a few examples. Medical images provide essential information for clinical diagnosis. Good image quality can yield more accurate patient information, which can then be used for better clinical decision making. X-ray computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) are clinically established imaging modalities. Among them, CT and MRI images are anatomical imaging with high spatial resolutions. However their physiological information is limited. On the other hand, although SPECT and PET can provide physiological information, both spatial resolutions are too poor to provide clear anatomical information. Thus, it would be advantageous to combine images from multi-modality images so that the resulting image can provide both physiological and anatomical information with high spatial resolution for use in clinical diagnosis and therapy. In order to generate an overlapping image from different-modality images, image registration and various fusion techniques have been employed. In the past studies, artificial neural network (ANN) has been used in registration and fusion of multi-modality remote sensing data for the reconstruction of 3-D models of terrain regions and medical images. In this study, we apply multilayer back propagation (BP) and conjugate gradient back propagation (CGBP) NN model to train PET and MRI images. We use Matlab and Borland C++ Builder to implement the network training frame and find out the optimal training model for accurate image registration. Further, we evaluate the accuracy of the image registration using NN by phantom images. Our study shows that, the registration errors are less than 5mm, and using appropriate opacity is better to show the fusion image than using interleaved pixels with independent color scale. Finally, we use Borland C++ Builder to implement a user-friendly window-based interface for image registration and fusion system.

Abstract:
The integration of variable distributed generations (DGs) and loads in microgrids (MGs) has made the reliance on communication systems inevitable for information exchange in both control and protection architectures to enhance the overall system reliability, resiliency and sustainability. This communication backbone in turn also exposes MGs to potential malicious cyber attacks. To study these vulnerabilities and impacts of various cyber attacks, testbeds play a crucial role in managing their complexity. This research work presents a detailed study of the development of a real-time co-simulation testbed for inverter-based MGs. It consists of a OP5700 real-time simulator, which is used to emulate both the physical and cyber layer of an AC MG in real time through HYPERSIM software; and SEL-3530 Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) hardware configured with ACSELERATOR RTAC SEL-5033 software. A human–machine interface (HMI) is used for local/remote monitoring and control. The creation and management of HMI is carried out in ACSELERATOR Diagram Builder SEL-5035 software. Furthermore, communication protocols such as Modbus, sampled measured values (SMVs), generic object-oriented substation event (GOOSE) and distributed network protocol 3 (DNP3) on an Ethernet-based interface were established, which map the interaction among the corresponding nodes of cyber-physical layers and also synchronizes data transmission between the systems. The testbed not only provides a real-time co-simulation environment for the validation of the control and protection algorithms but also extends to the verification of various detection and mitigation algorithms. Moreover, an attack scenario is also presented to demonstrate the ability of the testbed. Finally, challenges and future research directions are recognized and discussed.

Abstract:
Summary Objectives: To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of an interfaced approach to clinical information systems architecture. Methods: After many years of internally building almost all components of a hospital clinical information system (HELP) at Intermountain Health Care, we changed our architectural approach as we chose to encompass ambulatory as well as acute care. We now seek to interface applications from a variety of sources (including some that we build ourselves) to a clinical data repository that contains a longitudinal electronic patient record. Results: We have a total of 820 instances of interfaces to 51 different applications. We process nearly 2 million transactions per day via our interface engine and feel that the reliability of the approach is acceptable. Interface costs constitute about four percent of our total information systems budget. The clinical database currently contains records for 1.45 m patients and the response time for a query is 0.19sec. Discussion: Based upon our experience with both integrated (monolithic) and interfaced approaches, we conclude that for those with the expertise and resources to do so, the interfaced approach offers an attractive alternative to systems provided by a single vendor. We expect the advantages of this approach to increase as the costs of interfaces are reduced in the future as standards for vocabulary and messaging become increasingly mature and functional.

Abstract:
Computational tools are essential components of modern biological research. For example, BLAST searches can be used to identify related proteins based on sequence homology, or when a new genome is sequenced, prediction models can be used to annotate functional sites such as transcription start sites, translation initiation sites and polyadenylation sites and to predict protein localization. Here we present Sirius Prediction Systems Builder (PSB), a new computational tool for sequence analysis, classification and searching. Sirius PSB has four main operations: (1) Building a classifier, (2) Deploying a classifier, (3) Search for proteins similar to query proteins, (4) Preliminary and post-prediction analysis. Sirius PSB supports all these operations via a simple and interactive graphical user interface. Besides being a convenient tool, Sirius PSB has also introduced two novelties in sequence analysis. Firstly, genetic algorithm is used to identify interesting features in the feature space. Secondly, instead of the conventional method of searching for similar proteins via sequence similarity, we introduced searching via features' similarity. To demonstrate the capabilities of Sirius PSB, we have built two prediction models — one for the recognition of Arabidopsis polyadenylation sites and another for the subcellular localization of proteins. Both systems are competitive against current state-of-the-art models based on evaluation of public datasets. More notably, the time and effort required to build each model is greatly reduced with the assistance of Sirius PSB. Furthermore, we show that under certain conditions when BLAST is unable to find related proteins, Sirius PSB can identify functionally related proteins based on their biophysical similarities. This study discussed abrasive machining of aspheric glass lens, with the aim to increase the aspheric lens machining efficiency and reduce the back-end polishing process. The discussions covered "optical lens design", "Taguchi method optimization", "grinding force measurement", and "on-line real-time inspection". A window interface was designed by using Borland C++ Builder for optical glass design. The aspheric design parameters were substituted in it to obtain the machining path. In terms of Taguchi method optimization, the performance of electroformed grinding rod was compared with that of resin grinding rod. Taguchi method was used to look for optimization, and the quality characteristic was surface roughness. After experimental analysis, the optimization results were: using a resin binder grinding rod, the optimum parameter of 50,000 (rpm), forward grinding, feeding at 10 mm/min, grinding depth at 0.02mm, and aspheric lens surface roughness of 0.03μm. In terms of grinding force measurement, an eight-ring strain gage dynamometer was designed to measure the optimum grinding force. The measurement result showed that the grinding force in vertical direction was 3.2kg, and that in horizontal direction is 4kg. In terms of visual inspection, a CCD camera was mounted on the machine, which takes the image of workpiece immediately after it is machined. The form was inspected, and the dismounting error was reduced.

Abstract:
A common problem when casting reinforced concrete structures is to have a lower concrete compressive strength as opposed to what has been assumed in design. The deflections that may occur under the serviceability conditions can exceed the maximum allowed. Although less frequent nowadays, there is still an ongoing demand to offer simple and practical retrofitting solutions for such situations. To cast a new concrete layer above an existing waffle slab facing these problems is sometimes, only by appearance, the simplest retrofitting method. The major disadvantages reside in the growth of the overall steel consumption and overall weight of the structure. Additional reinforcement is needed for the new slab and at the interface of the two concretes. Interventions that are not always simple and accessible to the builder may still be needed to satisfy the strength demands of the already cast elements. Therefore, a post-tensioning system placed bellow the existing concrete seems to be a better solution. The present study refers to a real-case investigation on a 5-level residual building where a low concrete class was identified for several waffle slabs. Casting an overall top concrete slab or applying an exterior post-tensioning system were the two main retrofitting solutions offered by the designer. Both solutions are compared in terms of structural performance and cost efficiency.

Abstract:
To develop the numerical control program of mill-turn machine, the traditional method is to apply the computer-aided design and manufacture software to construct the geometric model, then to generate tool path and convert the path to NC program. For complex numerical control program of mill-turn machine, such as the multiple turret synchronized motion machining, because of the need to control time sequence, the NC program is highly required on using of dedicated software system. The objective of this paper is to establish a mill-turn machining system with window interface of via the language of Borland C++ Builder. The developed system can plan the machining path of simple mill-turn features, including turning shape, axial slot milling, and radial packet milling, and generate the corresponding NC program. For the milling functions, after the offset coordinates are calculated along the polygonal angle vector in the center point of cutters, the NC program is generated. For the turning functions, through importing the 2D DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) file and inputting related configurations, the entity coordinates can be retrieved and the corresponding NC program is then converted. By means of the solid cutting simulation software and practical cutting experiment for the generated numerical control program, the accuracy of the tool path generation algorithm is confirmed. Hence, the cost of purchasing commercial software can be saved and the time of generating program can also be decreased so that the working efficiency can be enhanced.
