Abstract:
This article gives an overview of results achieved in process of design, developing and using of data acquisition and control systems for LSM (long-base strainmeters) and other devices based on Michelson laser interferometer. Such control systems are also used in other types of laser-interference instruments that provide the study of geodynamic processes in a broad frequency range. It’s shown that the effective means for control of external factors in geophysical measurements using LSMs are the same-type laser-interference instruments. The geophysical laser-interference complex is described in this paper as the basis for the construction of interregional space-separated measuring systems. The efficiency of laser-interference meters based on the Michelson interferometer is shown for taking into account the influence of external factors during geophysical measurements using laser strainmeters. A recording system of a strainmeter based on a Michelson interferometer is described, which makes it possible to obtain high sensitivity and record high-frequency oscillations (up to 2 kHz). The advantages of using this control system over the previous versions are noted: the optical scheme of the proposed interferometer contains fewer parts, and the recording system is more reliable and has less power consumption.

Abstract:
Purpose The Olympic Games is the largest sporting mega event of its type, with deep cultural and historical roots. The event is short lived compared to the lifespan of the infrastructure required in host cities. The purpose of this paper is to examine models of adaptability in Olympic construction, using case studies in previous Olympic host cities of the Summer Olympic Games (Rome 1960, London 2012), to assess the impact of adaptability on future legacy. Design/methodology/approach A mixed methods approach (archival research, direct observation), was used in two case studies: Rome (Palazzetto dello Sport, Palazzo dello Sport), and London (London Olympic Velodrome, London Aquatics Centre). The case studies examined how adaptability was used in design to secure legacy. Findings In the selected case studies (Rome 1960, London 2012), adaptability has had a positive impact on the post-Games use of venues, all four of which remain in use today. However, there are multiple factors that contribute to post-Games legacy, and further research is necessary. Research limitations/implications Whilst some positive results were observed in this study, more research is necessary across a broader spectrum of sites and venues to make conclusive recommendations for architects designing for Mega Sporting events. Social implications The significance of this study to architectural practice, academia, and society is its potential to benefit future Olympic Games, International Olympic Committee policy, and be extended to other Mega Sporting events. Originality/value The originality of this research lies within its analysis of Olympic infrastructures and sustainability, of which there is a current lack of comparative studies in academic research.

Abstract:
In this study, a kind of uncertain network design problem, network design problem under uncertain construction cost, is researched. The discrete network design problem under uncertain construction costs deals with the selection of links to be added to the existing network, so as to minimize the total travel costs in the network. It is assumed that the value of the demand between each pair of origin and destination is a constant and the construction costs of each potential link addition follow a certain stochastic distribution. In this paper, a bi-level and stochastic programming model for the discrete network design problem is proposed. The construction costs of potential links are assumed as random variables and mutually independent with each other in this model. The upper-level model is a chance constrain model with the objective function of minimizing the total travel costs in the network, and the lower-level model is a user equilibrium model. The stochastic model is then transformed into a deterministic one. A branch-and-bound solution algorithm is designed to solve the deterministic model in an efficient way. At last, a computational experiment is conducted to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the approach proposed in this paper. The results show that the stochastic model is more flexible and practical compared with the deterministic one.

Several large-scale gravitational wave (GW) interferometers have achieved long term operation at design sensitivity. Questions arise on how to best combine all available data from detectors of different sensitivities for detection, consistency check or veto, localization and waveform extraction. We show that these problems can be formulated using the singular value decomposition (SVD)1 method. We present techniques based on the SVD method for (1) detection statistic, (2) stable solutions to waveforms, (3) null-stream construction for an arbitrary number of detectors, and (4) source localization for GWs of unknown waveforms.

Abstract:
The construction industry is prone to major safety hazards owing to the complex and onsite nature of construction projects. Hence, construction researchers have been pursuing concepts, methods, and tools using advancing technologies to improve construction safety management. Subsequently, the rapid digitization of construction work practices is providing opportunities to improve construction safety. Research has revealed that construction safety management practices can benefit from the applications of virtual design construction technologies (VDC), such as building information modeling (BIM), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), geographic information systems (GIS), and gaming technology. This study comprehensively reviews 191 research articles, published between 2010 and 2019, focusing on providing an overview of the implementation and application of VDC technologies for improving construction safety. The objective of this review is to critically collect and analyze applications of VDC technologies and present a holistic view of the features and functions of VDC technologies that can impact jobsite safety improvement in the construction industry. The review showed that VDC technologies can substantially improve construction safety. Emerging digital technologies, such as BIM, VR, AR, GIS, and gaming technologies can transform the traditional document-oriented safety procedures into digitalized safety practices allowing safety managers to visualize and analysis construction sites virtually to devise proactive safety measures and effective safety trainings. This study also highlights challenges such as research gaps regarding these digital tools that are currently impeding their widespread use in construction safety.

PurposeThe research aims to explore the interaction between design decisions that reduce occupational health and safety (OHS) risk in the operation stage of a facility's life cycle and the OHS experiences of workers in the construction stage.Design/methodology/approachData was collected from three construction projects in Australia. Design decisions were examined to understand the reasons they were made and the impact that they had on OHS in the construction and operation stages.FindingsThe case examples reveal that design decisions made to reduce OHS risk during the operation of a facility can introduce new hazards in the construction stage. These decisions are often influenced by stakeholders external to the project itself.Research limitations/implicationsThe results provide preliminary evidence of challenges inherent in designing for OHS across the lifecycle of a facility. Further research is needed to identify and evaluate methods by which risk reduction across all stages of a facility's life cycle can be optimised.Practical implicationsThe research highlights the need to manage tensions between designing for safe construction and operation of a facility.Originality/valuePrevious research assumes design decisions that reduce OHS risk in one stage of a facility's life cycle automatically translate to a net risk reduction across the life cycle. The research highlights the need to consider the implications of PtD decision‐making focused on one stage of the facility's life cycle for OHS outcomes in other stages.

Abstract:
When assessing the quality of fruit and packaging process, fruit-producing farms owners decide to evaluate fruit by people or automated sorting lines. The purchase of an automated sorting line generates high costs for the company, but it brings benefits in the form of increased work efficiency, and the better organization of fruit packaging and storage processes. The use of that machinery and equipment is common in agricultural farms as well as in fruit and vegetable processing companies. Despite the widespread use of various types of fruit sorters, the analysis of the operation of the designed device and the study of its technological parameters is still a current research problem. During operation of the devices for sorting fruit there are many technical problems affecting technological processes and quality of fruits. In order to improve the efficiency of sorting fruit, this process should be quickly and accurately. The purpose of this paper is to present the automated apple sorter line construction design, and software for quality controlling fruits. Selected elements of the sorter structure including endurance calculation using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and fruit control system using image analysis were presented.

Abstract:
A zero-energy building, also known as a zero net energy (ZNE) building, net-zero energy building (NZEB), or net zero building, is a building with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually. Buildings that produce a surplus of energy over the year may be called “energy-plus buildings” and buildings that consume slightly more energy than they produce are called “near-zero energy buildings” or “ultra-low energy houses”. Traditional buildings consume 40% of the total fossil fuel energy in the US and European Union and are significant contributors of greenhouse gases. The zero net energy consumption principle is viewed as a means to reduce carbon emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels and although zero energy buildings remain uncommon even in developed countries, they are gaining importance and popularity.

Abstract:
Impact drill is an important tool which is often used in the process of construction or decoration, mainly to complete the drilling on the cement wall or a brick wall. Impact drill will produce large amounts of dust and dirt in the use process which can bring great influence for the environment, also for construction personnel. This will also bring a lot of inconvenience for us. It is becoming important to avoid and reduce the impact. The problems in the process of the use become a need to study the problem. Here will study a method which can be a very good solution to this problem, it will bring great convenience to construction personnel.

Abstract:
Purpose Project execution is dependent upon management support from the firm. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which main contractors and supply chain members design their service provision in order to enhance the service experience. Marketing and service design (SD), theorized in terms of business development management, are examined to assess their effect upon service experience during project execution. Design/methodology/approach An interpretative methodology was used to identify patterns and significant factors perceived through the lens of business development managers in ten main contractors. Findings Main contractors provide a systems integration service, yet service provision was found to be limited and was frequently stated as “off the radar.” Clients are realizing sub-optimal value in service experience, and users and other societal stakeholders are realizing sub-optimal value in context during use. Research limitations/implications There is a need to address marketing and SD research to offer prescriptive guidance to practitioners, in particular using knowledge management as lever for improvement. Social implications Society is in receipt of sub-optimal facilities and therefore both socially falls short of meeting well-being and policy goals, and economically under-performs. Originality/value Contributions are made to the marketing and management theory on project markets where selling occurs ahead of provision. Scant support for construction marketing; a lack of the guidance on managing interactions in co-creating value; and the absence of SD among leading main contractors to deliver value had been reported.

Abstract:
Green building design refers to reducing the energy consumption of buildings through the use of energy-saving and environmentally-friendly technologies during the design and construction of buildings. The consumption of water resources and electric energy in office buildings is significantly higher than that of ordinary residential buildings, which has a greater impact on the environment during the construction process. Therefore, the use of green building design in the design of office buildings plays an important role in reducing building energy consumption. This article takes an office building in Chongqing as an example to explain the green optimization design and provide support for subsequent related constructions.
