Abstract:
AbstractThe paper focuses on the issue of intermedial references, the matters of conditions, necessity and relevance of their interpretation. It discusses the question of semantic value of an intermedial reference rather than of its aesthetic, pragmatic, modal or other aspects. It considers the lack of coherence between the theoretical propositions of intermedial studies, grounded in the studies of intertextuality, and the practice of analysis. In theory, every intermedial reference configures semantic dialogue between qualified media (configurations), thus requires conceptualisation. Yet, the practice of analysis reveals that some of them perform exclusively aesthetic function and invite to keep reception within the limits of perception. Therefore I make an attempt to define the criteria of textual request for conceptualisation/interpretation set up in a text as such. I propose to revise the relevant insights of different intertextual and semiotic approaches, to perform their revision, modification and extension, to articulate possible solution and exemplify it by filmic references to painting.

Abstract The article focuses on the intermedial relationship between cinema and painting, viewed as a self-referential process, and tries to determine various ways in which this type of signifying process can be used to “encode” various messages (within the work itself), or become an integral part of this (meta)communicative operation. Starting from a broad definition of intermedial references and continuing with a brief recontextualized detour through Gérard Genette’s taxonomy of transtextual instances, the author narrows down a specific technique that exemplifies this type of “codifying” procedure, namely the tableau vivant. In accordance with Werner Wolf’s proposed terminology, he attempts to determine the metareferential potential of this extra-compositional self-referential technique. The case studies focus on films by Peter Greenaway and Lars von Trier.

Abstract This article addresses claims made about the impact of intermedial theatre with reference to examples of contemporary practice. In particular it makes references to Brecht in this context and differentiates between Brechtian politics and aesthetics. The professed aim of intermedial practitioners to dislocate the bearings of experiencers of their work and to afford new perceptions by means of a radical play between mediums appears to resonate, at the level of principles of composition, with Brecht’s “radical separation of the elements.” However, at the level of politics, Brecht’s drama sought a broader understanding of isolated individuals by inviting audiences to see their experience in connection with a total historical process. But, regarding the Marxist trajectory in which Brecht’s practice was located, the context changed markedly post-1968, and beyond recognition post-1989. The article thus proposes that a new formulation is required of the impacts of new perceptions elicited by contemporary intermedial practices and ends with a brief consideration of Rancière’s account of the clash of heterogeneous elements in intermedial practice.

AbstractThe paper departs from the assumption that while the analysis of the systematic effect that popular cinema (genres like melodrama, horror or action movies) has on its spectators has been largely discussed by film theorists, little has been written on the affective dimensions of arthouse cinema. The lasting effect of visually compelling films on the individual spectator’s emotions has been addressed only sporadically by cognitive film theory, film phenomenology and aesthetics. Therefore, the author proposes to bring together terms and concepts from different discourses (film and literary theory, intermediality studies and empirical psychological research of the literary effect) in order to elucidate how intermedial, painterly references in midcult and arthouse films mobilize the associative dimensions of film viewing and may have an impact on spectatorial self-reflexion and emotional growth. Moreover, films that rely on the associative power of still(ed) images, painterly references bring into play the personal and cultural experiences of the viewer. As such, they can be effectively used in professional and cultural sensitivization.

Abstract As a possible cross section of cinematic narratology and the theory of intermediality the following essay assesses some of the effects of foregrounding the single, intermedial image within film. Specific figurations of intermediality that are experienced via the consciousness of single images, or some kind of “imageness” (i.e. as “intermedial references”) are presented as well as the modes in which they can interact with the narrative structure of a film. This interaction ranges from a momentary interference with the narrative structure of a film to disrupting it altogether; it may consist in constituting the gravity centre of a plot, or even in becoming the “canvas” for a palimpsest of narrative modes and narratives

Abstract In the 2011 superhero movie, Captain America: The First Avenger (produced by Marvel Studios, directed by Joe Johnston) the main opponent of the title character is a Nazi officer, Johann Schmidt, who turns out to be a kind of superhuman entity, the Red Skull. Throughout the movie, viewers can follow the process of him gradually leaving behind his identity as a Nazi officer, and presenting himself as the leader of the occult-high-tech terrorist organization, the Hydra. At a certain point we can see him visited by one of the scientists working for him, Doctor Zola, whom he puts wise to his plans. During the conversation a portrait is being painted of the Red Skull, but we cannot see his face, only that the artist uses a huge amount of red paint. In the background, excerpts of Wagner’s operas are being played, which is very unusual in a Marvel movie. The question is, should the viewer recognize the diegetic music and notice the possible reference to the painting Las Meninas by Velázquez? How the detection of these intermedial references and the awareness of the act of trespassing media borders would affect the semiotic processes of interpretation? And also, how would the more precise identification of the cited materials change the semiotic modality of intermediality here? The article tries to answer these questions by interpreting the scene and the role of the references in question within the entire film through the prism of intermedial semiotics.

The concept of intermediality arose in the theoretical discourse about the relations between different systems or products of meaning, such as the relations between music and art, or image and text. The word gained currency in the 1980s in German- and French-language studies of theatre performance, and in scholarship on opera, film, and music, in order to capture the notion of the interconnections between different art forms. For reasons of utility, the concept has been divided into three kinds: intermediality may refer to the combination of media (as in opera, in which music, dance, and song are conjoined into one aesthetic experience); the transformation or transposition of media (as in a film version of a book); and intermedial references or connections, whereby attention is drawn to another system of meaning, as in the references in literature to a work of art. The term has entered the field of classics especially via the study of the relations between the narrative and inscriptional modes in literary epigram.

<p>Compared with Anglophone literatures, Welsh-language fiction has to date received little attention in the context of the rapidly developing intermedial and interart studies. The purpose of the article is to provide a preliminary mapping of pictorial insets in Welsh-language fiction in the period 1992-2016. The novels considered in the article include some of the milestones in the development of Welsh fiction and provide a representative sample of the literary production from the period in question. The article identifies and lists the sources of ekphrastic insets scattered throughout the texts, grouping them into descriptive ekphrases, references, pictorial models and spatio-contextual ekphrases.</p>

Abstract:
Some of Jiří Kylián’s later works reveal a distinct detectable baroque influence. They also manifest a baroque quality that resists precise explanation. This partly derives from extensive references to the baroque style and period. However, not all references are the same, and some are more easily recognisable than others. Costumes, music and props openly reference the Baroque, whereas less obvious allusions can be found in lighting design or in the way a performance ‘addresses’ the audience. This thesis thus sets out to offer a terminology to describe these phenomena and provide a framework for analysing Kylián’s reworking of baroque sources. The analysis first addresses what is understood by ‘baroque’, then moves to describe various referencing practices, before applying the newly found framework to three of Kylián’s works that take the Baroque as a source of inspiration. Central to my discussion of the Baroque and its contemporary reappearance is the work of cultural theorists and art critics Omar Calabrese and Mieke Bal. Particularly important to my argument is Bal’s emphasis on the tendency in baroque art to involve the viewer’s physical presence in the experience of art. My discussion of referencing is, on the other hand, centred on ideas developed by the literary theorists Gérard Genette, Andreas Böhn, Irina Rajewski and Werner Wolf. Genette’s intertextual model is expanded to include a more precise understanding of the nature of quotation as developed by Böhn. The plurimedial nature of dance, or the co-presence in dance of more than one medium, is addressed by introducing Rajewski’s and Wolf’s notion of Intermediality. As well as analysing how referencing functions in dance and how it participates in meaning-making, this thesis also highlights the evolution of Kylián’s referencing practice over time and explains the function of the Baroque in Kylián’s oeuvre.

Abstract:
The thesis explores the role of music in Günter Grass’s novels. In pointing out the vital role of intermediality for Grass’s narrative strategies, the thesis opens up for a new, intermedial perspective on his work. It shows how references to music are used to realise Grass’s poetological concept “paspresenture” – the simultaneous presence of past, present and future – as well as his constant strive towards concreteness. The study draws on theories of intermediality, with a special focus on the role of transmedial media characteristics. It develops a transmedial methodology for analysing intermedial references, stressing how the notion of “musicality” within the text is created by media characteristics shared by both music and literature. Intermedial references are conceived as highlighting structures that are inherent in literature. The textual analyses of The Tin Drum (1959), Too Far Afield (1995) and Crabwalk (2002) are divided into three steps. First, explicit musical references in the narratives are interpreted as indexes pointing towards transmedial structures relevant to this specific context. Second, the examination demonstrates the prominent role of transmedial characteristics such as repetitivity, contrast, simultaneity and performativity within the texts. Third and last, the function of musical reference is discussed: in all three narratives, the focus on transmedial structures supplies a more consistent interpretation of passages which otherwise prove difficult to decipher. In Grass’s fiction, issues appear not to be discussed but performatively reenacted and thus remind more of musical than literary development. What is more, music – as handled by Grass – does not appear absolute or transcendent; rather, its manipulative potential is always prominent. However, the way musical references are used to realise Grass’s poetological aims stresses the bodily presence of musical performance, thus making music appear as the performative realisation of time.

The novel Rimbaud le fils written by Pierre Michon is analysed in this study, using the theoretical model of modalities and modes of media elaborated by Lars Elleström (2010), the typology of intermediality defined by Werner Wolf (2002) and Irina Rajewsky’s (2010) metatheoretical reflections upon the concept of borders. The novel by Michon relates to some famous photos that have become important in creating the understandings of Arthur Rimbaud as a poet and a myth. The guiding question of the analysis has been: How can the intermedial relations to the photos create meaning in the novel?   The theoretical model of Elleström has been applied in order to define the modalities and modes involved in the photography and in the written text of the novel. Thereby the significant differences and similarities between the different media have become distinguishable. The categorization proposed by Wolf and the remarks made by Rajewsky on the concepts of borders, have helped to link together the observations of modalities and modes with the hermeneutic reading of the text. Using the intermedial references has shown to be a possible way to express or to reinforce the literary expression of for instance: the heaviness of the literary legacy and mythology, the absent, the genius, the departure, the silence, the religious language, the unknown, the literary sham, the survival and the protective power of an expressive richness that relates to or implies several semiotic systems.

Abstract:
Background. Head and neck cancers (HNC) are among the most common malignancies worldwide, and about 90–92% of oral neoplasias are oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). Alcohol and tobacco consumption have been recognized as the main risk factors for OSCC development. Oncogenic viruses, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) or Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), as well as genetic alterations may also contribute to tumour formation.  Aims. To study the prevalence of HPV, EBV, Herpes simplex type-1 (HSV-1), and HPV-16 and their integration status as well as the molecular mechanisms that can serve as a basis for the development of OSCC. Results. In Paper I we reported a statistically significant increase in the prevalence of HPV-16 in oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) and OSCC samples compared to controls. A statistically significant increase was also seen in integrated HPV-16 compared to episomal viral forms when comparing OED and OSCC samples. Paper II reported the detection of HSV-1 in 54% of healthy samples, in 36% of oral leukoplakia samples, and 52% of OSCC samples. However, these differences were not statistically significant. In Paper III we reported a statistically significant increase in the detection of HPV-positive samples when comparing nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with single-PCR results in OSCC and fresh oral mucosa. Paper IV reported that the highest prevalence of HPV (65%) was seen in Sudan, while an HSV-1 prevalence of 55% and an EBV prevalence of 80% were seen in the UK. Finally, Paper V reported that the mRNA levels of Bcl-2, keratin 1, keratin 13, and p53 were significantly lower and that the level of survivin was significantly higher in the OSCC samples of the toombak users than in their paired control samples. Significant downregulation in keratin 1 and keratin 13 expression levels was found in the OSCC samples of the non-toombak users relative to their normal control samples. Conclusion. HPV-16 integration was increased in oral epithelial dysplasia and OSCC compared to normal oral mucosa. Nested PCR is a more accurate method of establishing HPV prevalence in samples containing low copy numbers of HPV DNA. HPV and EBV may be a risk factor in OSCC development. Our findings confirmed the role of survivin in OSCC carcinogenesis and survivin might be interesting as a biomarker to be monitored. The results presented here provide both clinical and biological insights that will bring us closer to the goal of managing this disease and improving treatment and outcomes for future patients.

M.Ed.<br>The word HIV/AIDS has dominated the media day in and day out, news is up as to how the pandemic is ravaging the whole world. Particularly at risk are the children and young people. In this mist of confusion and frustration one cannot really afford to turn a blind eye on this scourge. As there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, the only hope is “awareness” so that people can adequately protect themselves. The aim of this research is to find out whether the inclusion of HIV/AIDS- programmes in the school curriculum may not create an awareness about the epidemic, and as such, prevent the vast spread of the virus. In the light of the statement above, the following questions were formulated: • Are the young people and children aware of the trends and patterns of HIV/AIDS? • Would the inclusion of HIV/AIDS-programmes in the school curriculum bring awareness about the pandemic and reduce the vast spread of the virus? In order to research the problem as stated above, qualitative and quantitative methods were chosen. The choice was informed by the fact that using combined methods will prevent biased findings, develop and enhance the understanding of social phenomena and strengthening triangulation. The findings indicated that the HIV/AIDS-programmes should form part of the curriculum. The conclusions made were based on the impact of HIV/AIDS developed from the literature overview in Chapter 2 and findings from data in Chapter 4. vi Recommendations were made to National, Provincial and School level: • There is a need for a coherent National HIV/AIDS curriculum development strategy which will ensure systematic planning on HIV/AIDS-programmes generally, and in particular conduct a survey to collect data on awareness levels in life skills education. • Effective and monitored communication systems among various stakeholders and curriculum implementers are needed to conduct workshops on HIV/AIDS. • Regional officials need to be empowered to enter into partnerships with other accredited programmes to combat HIV/AIDS. • Educators should be encouraged to develop HIV/AIDS lessons in classrooms in line with national guidelines. Lastly, this study was worth undertaking, taking cognisance of the rate at which HIV/AIDS is killing the people. No<br>2-phenylethylamine is an endogenous constituent of the human brain and is implicated in cerebral transmission. This bioactive amine is also present in certain foodstuffs such as chocolate, cheese and wine and may cause undesirable side effects in susceptible individuals. Metabolism of 2-phenylethylamine to phenylacetaldehyde is catalysed by monoamine oxidase B but the oxidation to its acid is usually ascribed to aldehyde dehydrogenase and the contribution of aldehyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase, if any, is ignored. The objective of this study was to elucidate the role of the molybdenum hydroxylases, aldehyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase, in the metabolism of phenylacetaldehyde derived from its parent biogenic amine. Treatments of 2-phenylethylamine with monoamine oxidase were carried out for the production of phenylacetaldehyde, as well as treatments of synthetic or enzymatic-generated phenylacetaldehyde with aldehyde oxidase, xanthine oxidase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. The results indicated that phenylacetaldehyde is metabolised mainly to phenylacetic acid with lower concentrations of 2-phenylethanol by all three oxidising enzymes. Aldehyde dehydrogenase was the predominant enzyme involved in phenylacetaldehyde oxidation and thus it has a major role in 2-phenylethylamine metabolism with aldehyde oxidase playing a less prominent role. Xanthine oxidase does not contribute to the oxidation of phenylacetaldehyde due to low amounts being present in guinea pig. Thus aldehyde dehydrogenase is not the only enzyme oxidising xenobiotic and endobiotic aldehydes and the role of aldehyde oxidase in such reactions should not be ignored.

It is common knowledge that owing to their particular vulnerability children worldwide falls prey to physical and/or sexual violence in the home and/or community or witness criminal acts. Consequently children are called upon to testify in a court of law to cruelties or acts of violence. As a result of their developmental shortcomings and immaturity, children find the criminal justice system extremely intimidating and challenging. The importance of realising a justice system that not only affords an accused person the right to a fair trial but also protects and safeguards the rights of the child victims of and witnesses to the crime is thus indisputable. The purpose of this research was therefore to assist the South African criminal justice system in its on-going challenge to find a balance between the right of the accused person to a fair trial and the protection and safeguarding of the rights of child victims and child witnesses. The protection and safeguarding of the rights of child victims and child witnesses in terms of the South African Constitution, applicable domestic law and international instruments relating thereto were extensively discussed and shortcomings identified. Possible solutions to ensure that child witnesses and child victims are adequately protected and supported during the trial stage of the criminal process were advanced. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of an intermediary in assisting child victims and child witnesses during the court process. Comparative research on the protection of child victims and child witnesses in the criminal justice systems of New Zealand and Namibia were also conducted. Conclusions drawn from comparative studies were used to recommend appropriate changes to the current system. It is submitted that the adequate protection and safeguarding of the rights of child victims and child witnesses are dependent not only on sound legal principles but also on governmental and other involved stakeholders’ commitment toward the realisation of these rights. To achieve the purposes,the study used the method of question-naire survey and focus group. The course of exploration included four variables: "in-dividualized curriculum", "supportive counseling", "practical teaching" and "norma-tive accommodation". According to the discussion and conclusion, provide a refer-ence for educational authorities, social welfare authorities, judicial authorities, inter-mediate educational institutions, as well as future research. 　　Through literature review analysis and focus group discussions, the study con-structed theoretical and research framework, and also compiled the questionnaire of "Curriculum analysis and life adaptation in intermediate school". The object of the questionnaire survey included 613 students in 56 intermediate educational institutions in Taiwan.We got back 530 copies of the questionnaire with a utilization of 491 copies. Data were dealt with IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 by using Reliability analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's Product-moment Correlation Coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression Procedure. The followings were major conclusions: 1. For intermediate students, the highest degree of recognition of the overall variable is "generally recognized"; among them ,the highest recognition variable is"practical teaching" dimension; the lowest recognition variable is "normative accommodation" dimension. 2. For the recognition of variable of "practical teaching" dimension, the variable of "occupational skills orientation" is the highest. The lower grades of students are generally higher than the higher grades of students; the general students are higher than droupouts; the Tzu-hui kinds of classes students are generally higher than the middle class students. 3. For the recognition of variable of "normative accommodation" dimension, the lower grades of students are generally higher than the higher grades students; and the Tzu-hui kinds classes students are generally higher than the middle class students; The variable of "privacy space" is the lowest. 4. For the recognition of all dimensions, the female students are generally higher than the male students. 5. For the all dimensions of the variables, recognition of the students was generally higher than those who droupted for personal, school and peer factors. 6. For the variable of "practical teaching" and "normative accommodation", the recognition of the Tzu-hui students is generally higher than the students in the re-source and cooperative intermediate class. 7. For the variable of "individualized curriculum" and "supportive counseling", the recognition of students were highly correlation. 8. There is a capability of forecasting of the variable of " normative accommodation" and "supportive counseling" dimension, and the highest capability of forecasting are the variable of "family relationship counseling" and "human systems planning". 9. Our government should follow the example of the Hong Kong government's policy, and fully support the educational department to enhance the placement, accommo-dation, life care, and counseling services. 10. The refinement of intermediate education institutions is an important index of national process of civilization. In order to adjust the system planning, we should refer to the practice of the advanced countries, system plannig and adjust the intermediate education institutions.

AbstractThis chapter, Chaps. 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_3 and 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_4 present a self-contained introduction to the Standard Model of fundamental interactions, which describes in the unified framework of gauge quantum field theories all of the fundamental forces of nature but gravity: the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions. This set of chapters thus provides both an introduction to the Standard Model, and to quantum field theory at an intermediate level. The union of the three chapters can be taken as a masters’ level course reference, and it requires as a prerequisite an elementary knowledge of quantum field theory, at the level of many introductory textbooks, such as Vol. 1 of Aitchison-Hey, or, at a somewhat more advanced level, Maggiore. The treatment is subdivided into three parts, each corresponding to an individual chapter, with more advanced field theory topics introduced along the way as needed. Specifically, this chapter presents the general structure of the Standard Model, its field content, and symmetry structure. This involves an introduction to non-abelian gauge theories both at the classical and quantum level. Also, it involves a discussion of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism, that play a crucial role in the architecture of the Standard Model, and their interplay with the quantization of gauge theories. Chapter 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_3 then presents the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. This requires introducing the concepts of CP violation and mixing, and of radiative corrections. Finally, Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_4 presents the strong sector of the theory, which requires a more detailed treatment of renormalization and the renormalization group.

This chapter describes and analyzes books where fantasy is the dominant element and acquires vivid degrees of visuality. Adhering to a chronological order, analyses of Moebius’ Arzach, Enki Bilal’s Nikopol trilogy, and Yslaire’sXXeCielare carried out and concluded by comparisons between these works and other popular examples of fantastic comics. In order to underscore the degrees of openness between comics generated by images, JarmoMäkilä’sTaxi Ride through Van Gogh’s Earis then discussed. The importance of Moebius’ books comes through their visual detail and the subsequent encouragement of intensive visuality and experimentation with form usually ascribed to the fine arts. The comics by Bilal, Yslaire, and Mäkilä indicate both the extent and the ways in which conventional comics have been altered:adhering more strongly to comics conventions, Bilal’s and Mäkilä’s comics offer diverse options of interpretation through, for instance, intertextual and intermedial references.

Face portrait editing has achieved great progress in recent years. However, previous methods either 1) operate on pre-defined face attributes, lacking the flexibility of controlling shapes of high-level semantic facial components (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth), or 2) take manually edited mask or sketch as an intermediate representation for observable changes, but such additional input usually requires extra efforts to obtain. To break the limitations (e.g. shape, mask or sketch) of the existing methods, we propose a novel framework termed r FACE (Reference Guided FAce Component Editing) for diverse and controllable face component editing with geometric changes. Specifically, r-FACE takes an image inpainting model as the backbone, utilizing reference images as conditions for controlling the shape of face components. In order to encourage the framework to concentrate on the target face components, an example-guided attention module is designed to fuse attention features and the target face component features extracted from the reference image. Through extensive experimental validation and comparisons, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

The decision to close Ignalina NPP has significantly increased the urgency for a repository for low- and intermediate-level waste in Lithuania. It is generally considered necessary to have a licensed repository in operation before dismantling activities are initiated in order to avoid large and unnecessary costs for interim storage of waste. In the frame of bilateral cooperation with Sweden, consortium of three Swedish companies SKB-SWECO International-Westinghouse Atom developed and in the year 2002 presented to RATA reference design of a near surface repository in Lithuania. This reference design is applicable to the needs of Lithuania, considering its hydro-geological, climatic and other environmental conditions and is able to cover the expected needs in Lithuania for at least twenty years ahead. The basic principles for the proposed reference design are location above the ground water, foundation on firm basis, rock, densified sand or equivalent, a hill-type construction with vaults and engineered low-permeable clay based barrier consisting of smectitic clay of sedimentary origin covered by a surface barrier. The engineered barriers consist of the waste matrix, the waste packagings, the disposal container outer concrete, backfill between disposal containers, concrete cells surrounded by low-permeable clay-based material, all covered by long-lasting surface barrier with an erosion-resisting top. Water will be drained off by the surface barrier and collected in run-off ditches. The proposed reference design was accepted by authorities as a basis for further development of the repository in Lithuania. In the overall plan for the implementation of the repository prepared by RATA it is foreseen that repository should be in licensed operation in the year of 2011 depending on financing provided. The total cost of the repository project is estimated to be in the order of 140–240 MEUR. This year RATA is starting site selection phase which consists of area survey, regional mapping, screening, site characterisation and site confirmation.

Abstract Datum reference frames define coordinate systems for use in determining part compliance with geometric tolerances. A datum reference frame is specified based on the perfect nominal geometry of the part features called out as datums. However, the actual computation of a coordinate system frame of reference from the datum callouts becomes quite challenging when the features depart from nominal location, orientation, size, and form. We present a general method for representing datum reference frames (both partial and complete), and for computing a coordinate system from a simulated varianced part and a datum reference frame specification. The method makes use of built-in construction procedures, and derived or “virtual” geometry, in conjunction with a powerful parts positioning module that simulates the placement of the varianced part in a fixture represented by the datum surfaces. The reliance on virtual geometry as an intermediate representation, permits the concise representation of not only the datum reference frame types defined in the standard, but also allows for any arbitrary datum reference frames constructed by the user.

Contemporary processes of urbanization have outpaced the traditional notion of city. Connectivity has become a distinctive characteristic of urban spaces, so that networked cities don’t rely anymore on continuous urbanized areas, but on connections that rarely leave a direct spatial footprint. The new spatial structure of urban areas include greater inter-penetration of built-up and open spaces, and the emergence of urban enclaves, which can be spatially isolated despite being functionally connected to a city. In order to study these enclaves and their impact on urban form, a sample of 47 Spanish functional urban areas was examined, ranging from 36,000 to 6.0 million inhabitants. Land use polygons provided by SIOSE were grouped into three main categories (residential, non-residential and urban infrastructure) and cross-matched with functional urban areas defined by AUDES (an iterative method than combines morphological and functional criteria) in order to calculate compactness proximity index, gross and net density. Factors that influence urban compactness were identified: most northern and some coastal urban areas display a low compactness which can be attributed to orographic conditions; bigger cities tend to display high compactness, but smaller ones display a great diversity of values, from the highest to the lowest. A further analysis of small and intermediate cities helped to identify two complementary mechanisms of urban growth, spatial expansion of core areas and functional integration of peripheral nuclei, whose ocurrence in different proportions can explain the variation of compactness in the studied sample. Introduction. Intermediary and proxy searching, where one person searches on behalf of another, are noted in information science, health sciences and library science (e.g., reference work and early day online searching), professional workplace practices (e.g., lawyers, nurses) and everyday life contexts (e.g., caregivers). It is also observed within the competitive intelligence process, which involves collecting intelligence data from business environments on behalf of senior management and clients. Many problems occur in competitive intelligence intermediary information seeking that might be addressed by examining interdisciplinary contexts. Method. Literature searches were conducted in key library and information science, health science and law databases. A total of 136 publications were manually selected and analysed for a scoping literature review. Analysis. Thematic analysis was applied. Results. Challenges emerging from the thematic analysis are disaggregated into facets of intermediary information seeking (e.g., skills in question negotiation and information needs assessment, search heuristics and knowledge of information infrastructures). Conclusion. Systematised intermediary practices (e.g., application of appropriate question negotiation techniques, expanded knowledge of information infrastructures and landscapes, competitive intelligence domain knowledge and communication) can enhance intermediary information seeking, and should be investigated in competitive intelligence.
