Abstract:
This chapter presents data that challenge the prevailing assumption that as Latin evolves into French, it passes gradually from a satellite-framed language to a verb-framed language. In fact, Medieval French presents an unexpected intermediate stage, a grammar that includes a number of satellite-framed constructions that are present neither in Latin nor in Modern French (verb particles, goal-of-motion constructions, complex adjectival resultative constructions). Moreover, there is evidence that these constructions disappear abruptly during the same period. We provide a micro-parametric account

Chapter 15 examines the transnational legal framework for intermediated securities. It describes the shift from a world in which securities were primarily held and traded in paper form to a market in which they are held in immobilized or dematerialized form and traded through intermediaries. This shift required changes to national and regional legislation and resulted in the adoption of two international treaties: the Hague and Geneva Securities Conventions. The chapter pays attention to aspects of property law, the law of obligations, insolvency law, conflict of laws, and the regulatory frame

Abstract:
Anaesthesia for ophthalmic surgery has always been challenging because the patients range across all ages, but the elderly are especially vulnerable. They have an increased morbidity and are often taking multiple drugs that make even anaesthesia for minor surgery more risky. No wonder there has been a shift in the delivery of anaesthesia towards regional techniques although general anaesthesia remains the technique of choice for many intermediate and most complex ophthalmic operations. Understanding the physiology of the eye, the relevant anatomy, and the ophthalmic drugs patients may receive,

Abstract:
Discontinuous structures produced by edge-fronting represent one distinctive feature of Latin regarding Romance. This difference follows from the head parameter: whereas Romance is consistently head-initial, Latin fluctuates between different settings as a result of its occupying an intermediate position in the gradual shift from head-finality to head-initiality. In turn, this difference in the head parameter is responsible for the observed variation in edge-fronting, since its setting determines the application of antilocality in constraining movement. Concretely, if head-finality is the outp

The increasing complexity and de-localization of finance has allowed for an obfuscation of fees, costs, and expenses, leading to distortion in the underlying incentives that are being created. This distortion is driving an increasingly short-term and disconnected financial world. Here it is argued that the world of finance and investment needs to better understand the underlying ingredients of financial products, in particular the fees and costs of intermediated products. At the core of the arguments is a more professional and engaged community of asset owners that can understand the ingredien

Civil society organizations are, if not schools, at least pools of democracy. In the ‘third sector’, too, active engagement and participation ‘by the people’ have given way to meritocracy, or, in other words, to rule by the well-educated. Many popularly rooted mass organizations have witnessed a decline in membership and political influence. Their role as intermediary between politics and society has been taken over by professionally managed advocacy groups that operate with university educated public affairs consultants. First, the chapter describes the associational revolution, the enormous

Idris al-Sanusi’s departure and the rise of the fascist regime in Italy introduced a new phase in the Italian occupation of Libya. The Sanusiyya came to be redefined as an anticolonial Islamic force rather than an intermediary of state authority. Under the leadership of Mussolini’s first minister of colonies, Luigi Federzoni, the Italian colonial administration moved away from attempts to negotiate authority through Sanusi mediation, though this shift occurred gradually. At the same time, Federzoni introduced a firm commitment to a Catholic identity in Italian imperial expansion. This hardenin

This book explores the relationships between legal institutions and political and economic transformation. It argues that as law is enlisted to help produce the profound economic and sociotechnical shifts that have accompanied the emergence of the informational economy, it is changing in fundamental ways. We are witnessing the emergence of legal institutions adapted to the information age, but their form and their substance remain undetermined and are the subjects of intense struggle. One level for legal-institutional transformation involves baseline understandings of entitlement and disentitl
