Abstract:
English is a global language with hundreds of millions of speakers all over the world. In Sweden,English is one of the most important subjects in primary and upper secondary school. As a guideand supplement, many teachers use textbooks in their teaching, but not much research has beenconducted on the contents of textbooks and how it may influence students’ worldview. This study aims to investigate how different speakers of English are constituted in four textbooksfrom English level 5 in the Swedish upper secondary school. The purpose of the study is to shedlight on possible problems that might arise with unreflected use of textbooks and it is based ondiscourse theory and the Concentric Circles Model. The authors reach the conclusion that thetextbooks constitute a reality where the traditional core of native English speaking countriesdominates the English-speaking world. Furthermore, the analysed textbooks were found not tofollow several of the directives set down in the national curriculum. Hopefully this study willcontribute to broaden the research field of textbook analysis in Sweden.

Abstract:
------- ABSTRACT -------

Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is covering little by little every aspect on our lives. As these systems become more pervasive, the need of managing this complex infrastructure comes with several challenges. Indeed, plenty of small interconnected devices are now providing more than a service in several aspects of our everyday life, which need to be adapted to new contexts without the interruption of such services. However, this new computing system differs from classical Internet systems mainly on the type, physical size and access of the nodes. Thus, typical methods to manage the distributed software layer on large distributed systems as usual cannot be employed on this context. Indeed, this is due to the very different capacities on computing power and network connectivity, which are very constrained for IoT devices. Moreover, the complexity which was before managed by experts on several fields, such as embedded systems and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), is now increased by the larger quantity and heterogeneity of the node’s software and hardware. Therefore, we need efficient methods to manage the software layer of these systems, taking into account the very limited resources. This underlying hardware infrastructure raises new challenges in the way we administrate the software layer of these systems. These challenges can be divided into: intra-node, on which we face the limited memory and CPU of IoT nodes, in order to manage the software layer and ; inter-node, on which a new way to distribute the updates is needed, due to the different network topology and cost in energy for battery powered devices. Indeed, the limited computing power and battery life of each node combined with the very distributed nature of these systems, greatly adds complexity to the distributed software layer management. Software reconfiguration of nodes in the Internet of Things is a major concern for various application fields. In particular, distributing the code of updated or new software features to their final node destination in order to adapt it to new requirements, has a huge impact on energy consumption. Most current algorithms for disseminating code over the air (OTA) are meant to disseminate a complete firmware through small chunks and are often implemented at the network layer, thus ignoring all guiding information from the application layer. First contribution: A models@runtime engine able to represent an IoT running application on resource constrained nodes. The transformation of the Kevoree meta-model into C code to meet the specific memory constraints of an IoT device was performed, as well as the proposition of modelling tools to manipulate a model@runtime. Second contribution: Component decoupling of an IoT system as well as an efficient component distribution algorithm. Components decoupling of an application in the context of the IoT facilitates its representation on the model@runtime, while it provides a way to easily change its behaviour by adding/removing components and changing their parameters. In addition, a mechanism to distribute such components using a new algorithm, called Calpulli is proposed

Abstract:

Abstract:
In 1970, Lygia Fagundes Telles published the book Antes do Baile Verde, disclosing previously unpublished tales and short stories, reviewed by the author herself for this new edition, beginning the creation of a personal canon, by excluding some texts and altering those which remained. That being so, this book emerges as a kind of critic to her own work - criticism that is true not only because of the tales reviewing, but also for the reviewing of the book itself, which configuration has been changing for more than a decade, until reaching its current version. This shows us a constant movement as a writer on pursuit of an never achievable perfection. The work here presented is an attempt undertaken by a "model reader" to understand the intent of a hypothetical "model author" by modifying the tales here gathered and studied - according to the researcher Umberto Eco (1994). Besides Eco, we based ourselves on other novelists, also theoretical, such as Alberto Manguel (2005), Osman Lins (1974), Ricardo Piglia (2006), which addressed the issue of construction and reading of literary texts; and the work of Lygia Fagundes Telles, specifically: Alfredo Monte (2013), Nelly Novaes Coelho (1971), Vera Maria Tietzmann Silva (1985 and 2009), Vicente Ataíde (1972). In that search, we looked quantitatively and qualitatively upon tales review presented before the book Green Ball, examining how some recurring elements were gradually incorporated into the narrative, giving them an authorial homogeneity. The changes seen in the tales are of different natures: employment of more conversational tone; update of words; greater adaptation of language to the characters; option for buildings that do not call too much attention to themselves; larger economy in the construction of the scenes and characters; etc. Such changes can be perceived in the critical edition through the comparison between the first and last issues of each of the stories in this book. Here, we give the reader the latest edition of these tales, bringing, beside them, modified excerpts, as they appeared in their primary editions, presented on books from 1949 to 1970.
Devineni, Jaya Kartheek. "Ambient Backscatter Communication Systems: Design, Signal Detection and Bit Error Rate Analysis." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/105041.

Abstract:
The success of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) paradigm relies on, among other things, developing energy-efficient communication techniques that can enable information exchange among billions of battery-operated IoT devices. With its technological capability of simultaneous information and energy transfer, ambient backscatter is quickly emerging as an appealing solution for this communication paradigm, especially for the links with low data rate requirements. However, many challenges and limitations of ambient backscatter have to be overcome for widespread adoption of the technology in future wireless networks. Motivated by this, we study the design and implementation of ambient backscatter systems, including non-coherent detection and encoding schemes, and investigate techniques such as multiple antenna interference cancellation and frequency-shift backscatter to improve the bit error rate performance of the designed ambient backscatter systems. First, the problem of coherent and semi-coherent ambient backscatter is investigated by evaluating the exact bit error rate (BER) of the system. The test statistic used for the signal detection is based on the averaging of energy of the received signal samples. It is important to highlight that the conditional distributions of this test statistic are derived using the central limit theorem (CLT) approximation in the literature. The characterization of the exact conditional distributions of the test statistic as non-central chi-squared random variable for the binary hypothesis testing problem is first handled in our study, which is a key contribution of this particular work. The evaluation of the maximum likelihood (ML) detection threshold is also explored which is found to be intractable. To overcome this, alternate strategies to approximate the ML threshold are proposed. In addition, several insights for system design and implementation are provided both from analytical and numerical standpoints. Second, the highly appealing non-coherent signal detection is explored in the context of ambient backscatter for a time-selective channel. Modeling the time-selective fading as a first-order autoregressive (AR) process, we implement a new detection architecture at the receiver based on the direct averaging of the received signal samples, which departs significantly from the energy averaging-based receivers considered in the literature. For the proposed setup, we characterize the exact asymptotic BER for both single-antenna (SA) and multi-antenna (MA) receivers, and demonstrate the robustness of the new architecture to timing errors. Our results demonstrate that the direct-link (DL) interference from the ambient power source leads to a BER floor in the SA receiver, which the MA receiver can avoid by estimating the angle of arrival (AoA) of the DL. The analysis further quantifies the effect of improved angular resolution on the BER as a function of the number of receive antennas. Third, the advantages of utilizing Manchester encoding for the data transmission in the context of non-coherent ambient backscatter have been explored. Specifically, encoding is shown to simplify the detection procedure at the receiver since the optimal decision rule is found to be independent of the system parameters. Through extensive numerical results, it is further shown that a backscatter system with Manchester encoding can achieve a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain compared to the commonly used uncoded direct on-off keying (OOK) modulation, when used in conjunction with a multi-antenna receiver employing the direct-link cancellation. Fourth, the BER performance of frequency-shift ambient backscatter, which achieves the self-interference mitigation by spatially separating the reflected backscatter signal from the impending source signal, is investigated. The performance of the system is evaluated for a non-coherent receiver under slow fading in two different network setups: 1) a single interfering link coming from the ambient transmission occurring in the shifted frequency region, and 2) a large-scale network with multiple interfering signals coming from the backscatter nodes and ambient source devices transmitting in the band of interest. Modeling the interfering devices as a two dimensional Poisson point process (PPP), tools from stochastic geometry are utilized to evaluate the bit error rate for the large-scale network setup.
Doctor of Philosophy
The emerging paradigm of Internet-of-Things (IoT) has the capability of radically transforming the human experience. At the heart of this technology are the smart edge devices that will monitor everyday physical processes, communicate regularly with the other nodes in the network chain, and automatically take appropriate actions when necessary. Naturally, many challenges need to be tackled in order to realize the true potential of this technology. Most relevant to this dissertation are the problems of powering potentially billions of such devices and enabling low-power communication among them. Ambient backscatter has emerged as a useful technology to handle the aforementioned challenges of the IoT networks due to its capability to support the simultaneous transfer of information and energy. This technology allows devices to harvest energy from the ambient signals in the environment thereby making them self-sustainable, and in addition provide carrier signals for information exchange. Using these attributes of ambient backscatter, the devices can operate at very low power which is an important feature when considering the reliability requirements of the IoT networks. That said, the ambient backscatter technology needs to overcome many challenges before its widespread adoption in IoT networks. For example, the range of backscatter is limited in comparison to the conventional communication systems due to self-interference from the power source at a receiver. In addition, the probability of detecting the data in error at the receiver, characterized by the bit error rate (BER) metric, in the presence of wireless multipath is generally poor in ambient backscatter due to double path loss and fading effects observed for the backscatter link. Inspired by this, the aim of this dissertation is to come up with new architecture designs for the transmitter and receiver devices that can improve the BER performance. The key contributions of the dissertation include the analytical derivations of BER which provide insights on the system design and the main parameters impacting the system performance. The exact design of the optimal detection technique for a communication system is dependent on the channel behavior, mainly the time-varying nature in the case of a flat fading channel. Depending on the mobility of devices and scatterers present in the wireless channel, it can either be described as time-selective or time-nonselective. In the time-nonselective channels, coherent detection that requires channel state information (CSI) estimation using pilot signals can be implemented for ambient backscatter. On the other hand, non-coherent detection is preferred when the channel is time-selective since the CSI estimation is not feasible in such scenarios. In the first part of this dissertation, we analyze the performance of ambient backscatter in a point-to-point single-link system for both time-nonselective and time-selective channels. In particular, we determine the BER performance of coherent and non-coherent detection techniques for ambient backscatter systems in this line of work. In addition, we investigate the possibility of improving the BER performance using multi-antenna and coding techniques. Our analyses demonstrate that the use of multi-antenna and coding can result in tremendous improvement of the performance and simplification of the detection procedure, respectively. In the second part of the dissertation, we study the performance of ambient backscatter in a large-scale network and compare it to that of the point-to-point single-link system. By leveraging tools from stochastic geometry, we analytically characterize the BER performance of ambient backscatter in a field of interfering devices modeled as a Poisson point process.

Abstract:
The work of this thesis was focused on the development of high-performance algorithms for a new generation of molecular descriptors, with many advantages with respect to its predecessors, suitable for diverse applications in the field of drug design, as well as its implementation in commercial grade scientific software (Pentacle). As a first step, we developed a new algorithm (AMANDA) for discretizing molecular interaction fields which allows extracting from them the most interesting regions in an efficient way. This algorithm was incorporated into a new generation of alignmentindependent molecular descriptors, named GRIND-2. The computing speed and efficiency of the new algorithm allow the application of these descriptors in virtual screening. In addition, we developed a new alignment-independent encoding algorithm (CLACC) producing quantitative structure-activity relationship models which have better predictive ability and are easier to interpret than those obtained with other methods.

Abstract:
The work confronts prosaic pieces with noticeable autobiographical features. It deals namely with works of Edgar Dutka, Eliška Vlasáková and Antonín Bajaja. It was not a coincidence to choose right these three Czech authors. They have quite a few features in common. They all belong to the same generation. They are born in the 40's of the 20th century, so they have spent an essential part of their lives (childhood, adolescence and substantial part of their working age) in the second half of the 20th century - in the time of political convulsions and social changes. A childhood spent during this period has become their common literary theme. They all make their memories a literary piece. Each of them does it in a different way and with a different amount of accuracy. Their inspiration comes from their real life, from their memories. The next common feature of these three authors is that they all wrote some of their texts without a vision to make them public. They wrote them for themselves. Book editions were carried out after the year 2000. Last but not least mutual fact is that all of these three authors have been nominated for a prestigious literary price. Edgar Dutka's works show the interdigitation of fictional worlds and also the diffusion of these worlds in the real life of the author. Eliška...

Abstract:
100
One of the research topics in academic community network analysis is to ranking authors, articles, or journals. Previous researches considered the importance of authors, articles, or journals mainly based on the statistical calculation. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no study on the interaction among the importance of articles, keywords and authors. This study adopts the concept of the web data mining and combines HITS and PageRank algorithms to analyze the importance among articles, keywords, and authors on academic community network. This study first proposes a novel ranking model, PKARank, which defines the relations of the weights of articles, keywords, and authors on academic community. The proposed PKARank algorithm combines HITS and PageRank algorithms, and iteratively computes the weights. The experimental results on the simulating academic community network generated from SciVerse Scopus database also demonstrate that the proposed model provides the meaningful rankings among articles, keywords, and authors.

Abstract:
103
Now, recommender systems are not only used in e-commerce but in the field of scholarship, in every discipline. In academia, as more and more papers are published, it is becoming increasingly difficult to quickly find needed paper. Therefore, scholarly search engines and many assessment methods have begun to appear. Given that the paper recommendation issue is important today. In paper recommendation, because an excessive number of candidate set, there are some potential relevant papers cannot be recommended effectively in existing methods. We propose a Related Paper with Common Author method, which can effectively filter search results to provide potential answers without any abstracts or full text. We also propose a traditional citation network method, Citation Authority Propagation, which is a recommending method that uses authority author propagation. The experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Abstract:
102
This thesis shows the analysis of Information System (IS) Success Model by using Author co-citation analysis (ACA). ACA offers a good technique that contributes to the understanding of intellectual structure in the sciences and possibly in other areas to the extent that those areas rely on formal scholarly communication. It is a form of document coupling the frequency with two authors which their paper are cited by the same person. In this thesis we make an experiment by using data from SSCI, SCI database system to identify clusters of highly inter-related documents in the subject of IS Success Model. The study ranks the Information System Success Model documents by times cited and collects first top 100 articles’ authors. Also, we use Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and clustering techniques (CT) to create the two-dimensional maps to display the dynamic intellectual structure of IS success model, based on scholars citing their work by its ranking. The conclusion would provide further research for the researchers.

Hossain, Zakia. "Modeling of Fluid Powered Actuators Using Auto Regressive with Exogenous Input Model." 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/9151.

Full text
Abstract:
System identification has importance in modeling and control of industrial systems. The main task of system identification is to build a suitable model that represents the relationship between input, output and disturbances of a real system. The thesis presents identification and discrete time linear modeling of a hydraulic actuator. This thesis demonstrates how to formulate hydraulic functions for both normal and faulty conditions with internal leakage using both offline and on-line measurements. Least square and recursive least square methods are used to estimate the model parameters based on the Auto Regressive technique with Exogenous input (ARX) model. For the offline case, square and sine wave signals are used as input control signals. For the online case, random input control signal is applied. Prediction error criterion is used for model validation based on experimental data. It is shown that the ARX model is capable of representing a valve-controlled hydraulic system dynamics.

Abstract:
The presented diploma thesis maps the situation of contemporary child's reading. It deals with the factors which form the child reader externally (especially family, school and libraries, or the projects supporting child's reading). The main part of the thesis presents an analysis of the contemporary poetry for children. It examines how the books can influence the readers and motivate them for further reading. For the text analysis, the books of poetry which were awarded in competitions of Zlatá stuha or Magnesia Litera in 2013-2017 were selected as representative samples, namely Poetický slovníček dětem v příkladech, Všelijaké řečičky pro kluky a holčičky and Moře slané vody by Radek Malý, Tetovaná teta by Daniela Fischerová, Vynálezárium by Robin Král and Hlava v hlavě by David Böhm and Ondřej Buddeus. When analyzing the illustrations, attention was paid to the selected books that won the art category of Zlatá stuha and the competition Nejkrásnější česká kniha roku (The Most Beautiful Czech Book of the Year) and to the books representing the model production of the publishing houses of Běžíliška, Meander and series Raketa in publishing house Labyrint. An aspect of illustration was analyzed in the concertina books Rekomando and Ferdinande! by Robin Král and concertina book O čem sní by Petr...

Pereira, Ricardo Jorge Carvalho e. Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1822/19031.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last few years, for us, institutional scholastic evaluation has had a growing protagonism within the context of education policies. This fact has led to the fulfilment of several evaluation models for schools, and since two thousand and six, the External School Evaluation program has been deployed, thus being concluded, in the present year, the 1st cycle of this evaluation, which has encompassed the totality of Portuguese schools, therefore we seek through this study to discover if Institutional Evaluation contributes to the improvement of education service providing. This work has as its object of study Institutional Evaluation, in its external and internal modalities. It seeks to mobilize a conceptual framework characterizing different perspectives of Institutional Evaluation and question some concepts which are relevant to the analysis of educational organizations, such as autonomy; the project; quality; participation or leadership, the norms that frame Institutional Evaluation are revisited and organisational theories for school study are approached, welcoming into the framework proposals by Gareth Morgan, Bolman and Deal, Tony Bush, Jorge Adelino Costa and mainly, by Per-Erik Ellstrom and his “four faces” Model, constructed by taking as reference two essential dimensions: goals and technologies. The adopted methodology privileges a qualitative type approach, giving content analysis a central role, and so analytical categories, for later application to the corpus of analysis, were constructed – External Evaluation Report; Internal Evaluation Report and interviews with nine participating elements in the external evaluation interviewing panel. The data analysis points to a weak relationship between institutional Evaluation and the improvement of education services providing, translated in punctual measures, without consistent "evidences".
