Individuals internally displaced by conflict are a prominent feature of wars, political violence and other forms of repression. We suggest that a subnational analysis of internally displaced person (IDP) generation can help us determine the extent to which more specific flight-precipitating factors can account for individuals’ behaviors. In particular, we are interested in how different conflict actors and the interactions of these actors affect the production of internally displaced persons. We suggest that some types of conflict actors are more likely to be responsible for greater numbers of

Internal displacement in the current migratory crisis

Abstract: Today, international society faces the worst migratory crisis since World War II. According to the United Nations High Commisioner for Refugees (UNHCR), by the end of 2016 there were 65.6 million people who were forced to leave their homes. Of these 65.6 million, about 40 million are internally displaced, nearly twice as many as 22.5 million refugees. That is, the number of people who were forced to flee but failed to cross the borders of their own country is much higher than those who have achieved. Therefore, the hu

Forced displacement involves the involuntary movement of people from their habitual place of residence to a location within their country of nationality; or across an internationally recognised border. Among other classes of displaced people, the most notable groups of concern are refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Abstract:
This chapter documents both the internal and external displacement of Iraqis since the onset of the war. The Iraqi refugee exodus has been examined at four-year intervals, beginning in 2002 before the onset of the Iraq War, then in 2006 before the upsurge in Sunni–Shiite violence that lasted until 2008. The 2010 examination took place after the separation of most Sunnis and Shiites and the flight of minority populations but before both the March 2010 Iraq elections and the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. These cross-sectional historical and ethno-religious slices dealing with internally displaced peoples and refugees over twelve years depict the dimensions and character of the Iraqi refugee problem and its legacy in Iraq. They also demonstrate that the war has changed the human geography of Iraq, probably for decades to come, as a direct result of the failure of the United States and its allies to provide a stable and secure environment for its people.

Abstract:
Often overlooked, internal displacement affects millions around the globe. Colombia’s protracted conflict, which has internally displaced approximately six million people (IDMC 2015a, 2015b), has embedded social exclusion and violence as features of everyday life for many Colombians who find themselves living in informal settlements on the urban periphery. Increasingly, connections between urban exclusion, insecurity and poverty can be read as a ‘violent’ failure of citizenship (Koonings and Kruijt 2007, 12) that negates the lived experience of those on the margins. This chapter contends that despite this negation those who struggle to survive make claims of the right to belong to (and in) the city through placing their bodies in public spaces as well as finding new articulations of place and belonging amongst the complexities of the everyday. Through exploring these acts this chapter asks how the internally displaced challenge established notions of the right to the city and are prompting alternative articulations of belonging.

Full text
Abstract:
The human (and mammalian) facial skeleton is a complex response to the protection, support, and functional demands of a diversity of neurological and physiological processes that must be structurally integrated, and each places limitations on the others. The processes involve respiration (nasal and oral) and mastication (and deglutition), as well as thermoregulation through respiration. Three of the special senses (vision, smell, and taste) are housed within the facial skeleton, although only the first has a major impact on the shape and structure of the facial skeleton. The challenge in assessing the facial configurations of the Sunghir human remains is to partition the facial skeleton in a paleobiologically meaningful manner. Traditionally in paleoanthropology, often given differential paleontological preservation, the facial skeleton is divided initially into its two major skeletal components (cranial and mandibular). The former is then assessed in terms of structures or individual bones, with variable focus on the configurations of the orbital, nasal, and palatal regions. The latter is evaluated as a whole or divided into corporeal and ramal regions. A more meaningful approach, although still one with its limitations, is to assess the face in terms of the three major functional units of the facial anatomy: the orbital, nasal, and masticatory units. Developmentally, in simplified terms, these units are sequential in their priorities. Even though the anterior orbital margins continue to grow anteriorly with facial growth through adolescence, their internal structure is formed early, given that the ocular sphere is an extension of the brain stem and grows in concert with it. The nasal region, both the internal capsule and its skeletal aperture, forms the core of the midface, the roof of the oral cavity, the medial surfaces for the zygomatic regions, and the baseline minimum for the length of the face given that the anterior mammalian dentition cannot be posterior of the nasal aperture. The maxillary dentition with its supporting structures is hafted onto the nasal capsule through the maxillary alveolar process, and the mandible normally grows to provide proper occlusion with the forwardly displaced maxillary dentition.

Abstract:
Dispossession and displacement have always afflicted life in the modern history of the Middle East and North Africa. Waves of people have been displaced from their homeland as a result of conflicts and social illnesses. At the end of the nineteenth century, Circassian Muslims and Jewish groups were dispossessed of their homes and lands in Eurasia. This was followed by the displacement of the Armenians and Christian groups in the aftermath of the First World War. They were followed by Palestinians who fled from their homes in the struggle for control over Palestine after the Second World War. In recent times, almost 4 million Iraqis have left their country or have been internally displaced. And in the summer of 2006, Lebanese, Sudanese and Somali refugees fled to neighbouring countries in the hope of finding peace, security and sustainable livelihoods. With the increasing number of refugees, this book presents a discourse on displacement and dispossession. It examines the extent to which forced migration has come to define the feature of life in the Middle East and North Africa. It presents researches on the refugees, particularly on the internally displaced people of Iran and Afghanistan. The eleven chapters in this book deal with the themes of displacement, repatriation, identity in exile and refugee policy. They cover themes such as the future of the Turkish settlers in northern Cyprus; the Hazara migratory networks between Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and the Western countries; the internal displacement among Kurds in Iraq and Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem; the Afghan refugee youth as a ‘burnt generation’ on their post-conflict return; Sahrawi identity in refugee camps; and the expression of the ‘self’ in poetry for Iran refugees and oral history for women Iraqi refugees in Jordan.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the rise of the low-income cooperative movement and the opportunities it offered for rural poor people to take charge of their economic destiny. In response to layoffs and evictions, activists formed cooperative enterprises that provided employment to displaced workers. Cooperatives represented an attempt to establish a measure of economic independence for rural poor people and thus facilitate political participation in a region where many African Americans still feared losing their homes or livelihoods if they tried to challenge the social order. Creating black-owned businesses founded on cooperative principles also demonstrated that alternatives existed to capitalist economic structures that exploited and then discarded black labor. Despite some internal weaknesses and hostility from white supremacists that hindered their effectiveness, cooperatives showed significant promise as a model for alleviating rural poverty.

Abstract:
Students studying web-development need experience in providing their expertise to people with limited Internet experience. On the other hand, students studying manufacturing management need experience to communicate ideas and concepts such as engineering drawings and tooling plans to non-engineering students. Based on this need, two faculty members developed an interdisciplinary collaborative project reflecting the essential elements of successful collaboration in teaching and learning. Students enrolled in either a web-development or a manufacturing course participated in this study. These st
