Vanhille, Jared. "Cultivating Internal Rhetoric: Lessons on Self-Directed Rhetoric from Protestant Meditation Manuals and Modern Metacognitive Theory." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9030.

Full text
Abstract:
Internal rhetoric describes how individuals engage in self-persuasion. Jean Nienkamp developed a theory of internal rhetoric by drawing on both the rhetorical tradition and the field of psychology. I build on Nienkamp's work by arguing that the Christian meditative practice outlined by Joseph Hall in The Arte of Divine Meditation (1607) and Edmund Calamy in The Art of Divine Meditation (1634) provides a theoretical and practical framework for performing a particular kind of internal rhetoric in which people become the rhetorical critic by reading their own beliefs and knowledge and then become the rhetor by composing self-directed arguments. This process of internal rhetoric aims to increase understanding, rouse affections, and change behavior. Synthesizing Hall and Calamy's meditative approach to internal rhetoric with Gregory Schraw's model of metacognition creates a more complete theory and practice of internal rhetoric, a practice that transforms the very nature of the individual. By bringing scholarship from multiple disciplines into conversation with one another, we can better understand how internal rhetoric is enacted and how to teach it.

Abstract:
The fields of psychology and rhetoric share the goal of improving human mental health and behavior through persuasion. This thesis traces the history of rhetoric and psychology theory, focusing on the parallel theories of Nienkamp's internal rhetoric and Herman's dialogical self. Both theories model the human mind as having multiple psyches that actively interact to interpret human experience and project human behavior. I conclude with a case study of anorexic patients using ethos, pathos, and logos in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), arguing that principles of rhetoric can help patients with mental disorders cognitively realign their thinking more effectively than drug treatments can.

Abstract:
To have an effective internal communication within an organization is of utmost importance. To also have a well-functioning internal communication during a crisis event is fundamental. Today, communities and organizations are often placed in different types of problematic and threatening situations. This is almost inevitable. However, the communication about these situations is manageable. In the winter of 2010 the communication of the Police Authority were put to the test, because of a terrorist attack that also included a suicide bomber. This essay aims and investigates the police's internal communication process during this event. The intention is to report on whether rhetorical strategies such as rhetorical situation, definition and approach, has been taken into consideration in the internal communication. Through the use of a qualitative case study method the internal written communication were analyzed. The study indicates that several elements within the internal crisis communication can be linked with various rhetorical strategies and models. However, there are parts that can be improved.

Abstract:
The Internet is a product of the organizational structure of the Office of Science and Research Development, scientific corporate liberalism of Vannevar Bush's post-WWII policies, the process-oriented rhetoric in Science: The Endless Frontier, and Kennedy's commitment to the New Frontier. This thesis first examines the network infrastructure and then the Web in succession, following the common use of the metaphor, which moved from the rhetoric of science in the 1940s to a metaphor that financially and ideologically supported the Pentagon's Advanced Research Project Agency infrastructure in the 1960s and then finally created the value-laden features of the Internet, cyberspace, and its culture in the 1990s. This thesis connects the stages of development of the Internet to uses of the frontier in political rhetoric.

Apple, Angela L. "Apocalypse how? : a generic criticism of on-line Christian Identity rhetoric as apocalyptic rhetoric." Virtual Press, 1998. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1100451.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the complex relationship between radical right rhetoric and the genre of apocalyptic rhetoric. The radical right consists of the White Nationalist and Patriot movements, two common "hate group" movements in the United States. The Klanwatch (1998d) explains that the number of hate groups in the United States grew by 20 percent in 1997. They attribute much of this growth to the movement's use of the Internet. Although these hate groups are highly diverse, Christian Identity is a common theology to which many members of the radical right adhere. This study analyzes two artifacts representational of Christian Identity rhetoric. These artifacts were found on the Web site of the Northwest Kinsmen, a radical right group from the Pacific Northwest. Christian Identity is a "pseudo-Christian" theology that claims that white Christians are the true Israelites and that Jews are actually "children of Satan." Christian Identity followers believe that there will be a racial war (i.e., racial apocalypse) in which white Christians will triumph over the forces of evil (Abanes, 1996).This study utilizes the rhetorical method of generic criticism to determine that the Christian Identity rhetoric present on the Northwest Kinsmen's Web site is apocalyptic rhetoric. Generic theory, the theoretical foundation of this study, argues that rhetorical genres have common situational, substantive, and stylistic features and a common "organizing principle" that unifies the genre. Therefore, this study compares the key features of apocalyptic rhetoric to the Northwest Kinsmen artifacts. Through this study, a greater understanding of the social reality, beliefs, attitudes, and values of the radical right, Christian Identity rhetors is obtained. This study discovers that the Christian Identity rhetoric found on the Northwest Kinsmen's Web site is apocalyptic rhetoric. This study illustrates that these Christian Identity rhetors believe that they are living in a chaotic world of inexplicable problems. Through apocalyptic rhetoric, the rhetors help explain the "crises" facing the audience and therefore restore order in their lives. Specifically, this study shows how these apocalyptic rhetors utilize conspiracy theories to restore order. Additionally, it illustrates how the rhetorical strategies associated with apocalyptic rhetoric (i.e., typology, transfer, and style and language) are used to enhance the credibility of the rhetor and the legitimacy of even the most racist assertions. Finally, this study provides insight into the use of the Internet by radical right groups.

Kulak, Andrew Michael. "Rhetoric Beyond the Digital/Physical Divide: The Internet and Digital and Physical Hybridity." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/89488.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I report findings from three case studies of rhetoric about the internet based on a rhetorical theory of the internet as physical and digital hybrid. I understand digital and physical hybridity as connections between physical and digital objects enabled by the internet that trouble a delineation between digital and physical space. I begin my study by tracing the history of the internet and its relationship with materiality. While the vastness of the internet is not something that can be readily understood, it is something that spreads across space and time, resulting in effects that demand rhetorical response. I describe rhetorics of purification as rhetorical responses to the internet that isolate physical and digital objects and ascribe to these objects different qualities. These rhetorics can be productive in rendering the internet and its effects salient within different discourses, but they can also be limiting in terms of aspects of the internet that they elide. To situate my work, I review literature in the field focused specifically on the emergence of digital rhetoric and its theories, methods, and objects of inquiry. I describe a primary method of rhetorical analysis for locating rhetorical strategies used to account for internet technology in different discourses, with supplementary methods including distant reading and interface analysis. In the first case study, I consider a social media app that leveraged smartphone geolocation technology to situate anonymous online discourse within physical locations and analyze responses to the service and posts on the app. In the second case study, I consider legal decisions in the United States focusing on the rhetorical moves that make internet interactions matter within the context of internet surveillance and privacy rights. In the final case study, I consider online-only writing courses and the impact of online platforms on pedagogy through a procedural interface analysis. In conclusion, I focus on the relevance of these studies to ongoing conversations in digital rhetoric concerning social media, internet privacy, and pedagogy.
Doctor of Philosophy
This dissertation considers the internet from the perspective of rhetoric, which is the study of the theory and practice of written, spoken, and other modes of communication and debate. I report findings from three case studies about the internet in terms of digital and physical hybridity and rhetorics of purification. Digital and physical hybridity refers to the internet in terms of connections between physical objects (like people, buildings, and the environment) and digital objects (like data and computer code) that make a distinction between the two kinds of objects difficult. This means that the internet itself cannot be completely reduced to physical or digital components, even though it sometimes is in communication. Rhetoric where this distinction between digital and physical occurs can be understood as a rhetoric of purification because digital and physical objects are separated, or purified, from the deeper network of relationships between physical and digital objects which makes up the internet and the common reality both kinds of objects share. Rhetorics of purification can make the internet easier to understand and communicate about, but they can also overlook the deeper effects of the internet and its relationships with places, people, and communities. This dissertation takes up three different case studies related to rhetorics of purification. To demonstrate how this theory relates to the field, I review literature in rhetoric that considers digital texts, interfaces, and the internet in different ways in response to changes in technology. To study rhetoric surrounding the internet, I used a method of rhetorical analysis applied to different texts related to the internet. I combined this method with several methods of computer-assisted analysis including analysis of large bodies of text and interface analysis. I applied these methods within three different case studies. Each case study considers examples of rhetoric that represents the internet as distinct physical and digital components. In my first case study, I consider a social media service that used location information from users’ devices to situate anonymous online discourse within physical communities and analyze responses to the service. In my second case study, I consider legal decisions in the United States about internet surveillance and privacy rights. My analysis focuses on the rhetorical moves that are used in the legal decisions that relate the internet to the privacy of individuals and groups. In my final case study, I consider online-only writing courses and the impact of online platforms on teaching. In conclusion, I focus on the findings from these case studies and their relevance to ongoing conversations in the field concerning social media, internet privacy, and online teaching.

Abstract:
From the distribution of religious tracts at Ellis Island and Billy Sunday’s radio messages to televised recordings of the Billy Graham Crusade and Pat Robertson’s 700 Club, American evangelicals have long made a practice of utilizing mass media to spread the Gospel. Most recently, these Christian evangelists have gone online. As a contribution to scholarship in religious rhetoric and media studies, this dissertation offers evangelistic websites as a case study into the ways persuasion is carried out on the Internet. Through an analysis of digital texts—including several evangelical home pages, a chat room, discussion forums, and a virtual church—I investigate how conversion is encouraged via web design and virtual community as well as how the Internet medium impacts the theology and rhetorical strategies of web evangelists. I argue for “persuasive architecture” and “persuasive communities”—web design on the fundamental level of interface layout and tightly-controlled restrictions on discourse and community membership—as key components of this strategy. In addition, I argue that evangelical ideology has been influenced by the web medium and that a “digital reformation” is taking place in the church, one centered on a move away from the Prosperity Gospel of televangelism to a Gospel focused on God as divine problem-solver and salvation as an uncomplicated, individualized, and instantaneously-rewarding experience, mimicking Web 2.0 users’ desire for quick, timely, and effective answers to all queries. This study simultaneously illuminates the structural and fundamental levels of design through which the web persuades as well as how—as rhetoricians from Plato’s King Thamus to Marshall McLuhan have recognized—media inevitably shapes the message and culture of its users.

Abstract:
Vaccination is an important public health measure that can help reduce disease at the population level. Substantial evidence exists that vaccines are safe and effective at reducing the incidence of diseases like pertussis, measles and cervical cancer. However, on Internet parenting forums, parents discuss whether or not vaccination is the right choice for their children. In this thesis, I highlight the historical context of the anti-vaccine movement in mid 19th century to early 20th century Victorian Britain in the era of compulsory smallpox vaccination. Vaccination in this time was a very different and more overtly dangerous process, and preexisting dissenting movements took up anti-vaccination as a cause. Today, the rhetoric on Internet parenting forums has grown to include arguments of safety, efficacy and necessity of vaccination. I gathered much of the information from the mothering.com and mumsnet.com parenting forums, and other websites like Sanevax.org.

This thesis, inserted in the research line Reading, Writing and Teaching of Portuguese Language, of the Program of Postgraduate Studies in Portuguese Language of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, has as its theme the study of the construction of the ethos of the elderly in the relationship Social page: Facebook. When placing himself in the digital social network, the clerk assumed the authorship of what he writes: if he writes of himself, if he uses multimodality for such, he is an author and a character. Networking does not have to be a "truth," but it needs to be believable and, in that sense, persuasive. Language, on the other hand, translating man and revelation, objectively or in a less explicit way, the character of being ascertained by the unveiling of the rhetorical devices used does not reveal itself. To make this possible, we collected thirty-six senior profiles on the page and analyzed the rhetorical manifestation of character-building traits in line with Aristotle's studies of the passions and character manifested by young, old, and elderly of his time. We also collected twenty youth profiles and twenty adult profiles so that we could carry out a comparative analysis and understand whether the discursive form of character manifestation that Aristotle preached more than two thousand years ago remains, to a lesser or greater degree, in the Virtual reality experienced nowadays, for digital natives, as by digital immigrants. With the aid of modern studies of rhetoric, we understand that in verbal interaction through Facebook, ethos, pathos, and logos, they intermingle for a single discursive purpose: to attain an adherence of the other, at least by deliberation or by simple delight. In this way, the rhetorical act is filled with very idiosyncratic action, without, however, hiding the impulsive and thematic postures of a generation. An analysis has revealed expressive manifestations about a posting of euphoric passions and traits of character still remaining in contemporary society or in the choice of the themes in question, in a rhetorical discourse very expressive and revealing a way to be an elder in contemporary society

Abstract:
Nyckelord: ethos, pathos,logos- triaden, visuell retorik, TV-reklamfilm, hermeneutik, binärt motsatsförhållande, dejting, internet, Barthes, Lévi-Strauss
This study aims to highlight the two firms Match and Victoria Milan's television commercials. The primary purpose is to explore the rhetorical strategies Match and Victoria Milan use in the commercials to attract new paying members to the sites. Each advertisement is examined through rhetorical analysis. The rhetorical theories used are the triad of ethos, pathos, logos and the semiotic aspects of denotation and connotation. In my work I also analyze video production technology to illuminate the camera angles. With hermeneutics as a scientific approach I will interpret the commercials by using the hermeneutic circle approach. The secondary objective of this work is to compare the similarities and differences between the commercials. The questions I ask are 1) the similarities and differences in the commercials and 2) how different gender patterns differ between the commercials. To visualize the structures that exist, I will use structuralist theory. Victoria Milan has until today only produced one television commercial that is analyzed. Match, however, produced several commercials and I have therefore chosen to examine the most recent of these commercials. The analysis shows that both advertising films strength and persuasive power lies in that they combine the rational and emotional Apelles – the intended recipient both recognize themselves in the commercials and that the commercials contain arguments. The Promotional Films are based on structuralist binary opposites that form the basis of how man and woman's role in advertising films are produced / perceived differently. In the Match commercial the man is in control. In the Victoria Milan commercial the woman is the one who is active. One conclusion is that two sub-conscious issues are raised by the recipient, "it can become areality" (Match), and "it could be better" (Victoria Milan). This emotional influence instilles hope in the subconscious of the intended target groups. The hope they feel is a strong rhetorical approach that both companies use. Finding an excuse for bad behavior, however, is Victoria Milan's main rhetorical strategy.
The purpose of the study was to investigate how a written internal message is perceived by a recipient depending on whether the message is phrased positive or negative, and whether the message is strictly fact-based or presented in a narrative. This study was conducted through digital surveys which were sent to the recipient via social media. The questionnaire contained four different texts, two messages were presented in a narrative and two were strictly fact-based. Further, the messages are designed in the way that two messages have a negative message and the other two are designed with positive messages. The questions in the survey are designed to answer whether the reception is affected by text status (rhetorical vs. factual) and whether differences exist between the valence (positive vs. negatively charged message). Reception was measured on a Likert scale based on the dimensions of openness, understanding and clarity. The result shows that the rhetorically enriched message was better received, regardless of whether the message was positive or negative.

Purpose/Aim: To achieve a deeper knowledge and better understanding of how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama use rhetoric figures and body language to convince the people that they are the individual who should be elected as the democratic nominee and if and in which way Internets characteristics take practical expressions in the supply of videos on YouTube and Barack Obamas and Hillary Clintons official websites.

Material/Method: Quantitative content analysis

Main results: Hillary Clintons and Barack Obamas ability to spread out exactly the information they want on their official websites takes expression in form of videos with only positive information. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama try to create a form of advertising on their official websites through the publication of these videos. Internets special characteristics are highly visible and realized in the videos on YouTube. Users are very active which take expressions in creative creations of videos. On YouTube there also exists negative information about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. It exist a high level of interactivity in the videos on YouTube. The degree of interactivity is much lower on the official websites.

Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama use a lot of rhetoric figures in their speeches. Regarding all three types of figures Barack Obama uses them more than Hillary Clinton. Both candidates have a high degree of positive body language. Hillary Clinton has a higher degree of positive body language than Barack Obama who in a comparison with her uses gestures with more negative associations.

This doctorate work has as it is main objective the description and analysis of the phenomena called advertainment, which is a new communication strategy for advertising. The advertainment should be understood as a new paradigm in advertising since it has changed some of the fundamental processes of the advertising as we know it. Concerning the consumer, advertainment inverts the information flow, once it makes the consumer search, download, play and forward to his friends films from brands instead of being a simple receptor of advertising during the TV break. On the creative side, it is fundamental to build captivating stories to incentive consumers to forward these commercials to their friends. For this process to succeed it is needed a great deal of consumer involvement, only achieved if the advertising incorporates the rhetoric elements described by Aristotle in his elocucio, which is pathos, ethos and logos integrated within the message. In building messages which aggregate the Aristotle persuasive technics of captivating stories to be distributed throughout internet. With advertainment, advertising creates a new tool with high level of persuasiveness that allows brands to reach a different standard in communicating with their customers. Instead of transmitting information regarding products and incentive the purchase, advertising can be a source of entertainment, achieving a new status from the consumer point of view, becoming pleasant and desirable

Abstract:
Much of what technical communicators know about language use is based on spoken or written communication; however, newer media complicate those boundaries. Spoken and written language differ primarily in the use of metadiscourse, language that aids interpretation of propositions. While research shows that metadiscourse aids in retention and attitude change in both print and speech, none exists to show whether this is true in a medium like the Internet, which has qualities of both. Technical communicators need this information because they must compose similar messages in several media: advertising, system help, business training, and health education are commonly delivered in multimedia formats, primarily in print and the Internet. Most critical of these messages is health education, in which technical communicators must make treatment accessible to patients at home. Not only does this task require clear communication, but also it requires convincing patients to attend to the information, have positive attitudes about illness or self-care, and remember the information-these are the ingredients needed for learning. With good reason, healthcare providers are investing many resources into Internet health education, but technical communicators lack guidance on effective use of the medium. Research in this area focuses on measuring outcomes of existing programs rather than on systematically identifying what works and why.The present study examined language use (i.e., metadiscourse) and medium (i.e., Internet) in health education about stress management. This study reviews existing research in these areas and posits persuasion and social influence theory as a basis for understanding the persuasive abilities of health educational materials, or the abilities of the materials to convince patients to learn health information, change attitudes about illness and treatment, and change health-related behaviors. To test this theory, 120 students from a Southern university voluntarily read interventions developed to isolate the effects of metadiscourse and media on cognitive processing, attitudes, behavior intentions, and knowledge. Repeated measure multivariate analyses revealed that regardless of metadiscourse or medium, participants' knowledge about stress management increased and was maintained over time; however, favorable attitudes were not maintained over time. Results indicate that peripheral rather than central route persuasion occurred, and, therefore, knowledge gains are likely to be short-term. Suggestions for future research are provided and recommendations for theoretical development are discussed.

The impact of virtual reality technologies as well as the influence of gaming narratives have favored what we call immersive rhetoric, a storytelling form based on visual and interactive resources which aim to achieve a high degree of user immersion. Immersive journalism we understand as an emerging journalistic practice that applies the technologies and resources needed to achieve that goal. While immersive journalism has its greatest expression in the application of immersive virtual reality technology, immersive tecniques can also be applied through the digital display. We first propose the expressive components for immersive journalism based on the visual interface and then we analize their journalistic applications.

This thesis conceptualizes the Usenet community's appropriation of language, provides insights into how media and media restrictions cause their users to appropriate language, and discusses how future media may further cause users to appropriate language. With the Usenet we have a chance to study a relatively new community bound by relatively new technology, and perhaps we can learn more about the appropriation process by studying the two.

Abstract:
The advent of social media has provided an arena where barriers to entry are low. Individuals may persuade, question others and defend both their philosophies and their actions. This study examines the classic role of rhetorical criticism as it may apply in new media venues. A blog written by a public figure was examined through a synthesis of rhetorical criticism analyses derived from Ware and Linkugel, Vartabedian, and Downey. Four strategies and associated positioning in the practice of apologia were identified in selected blog posts, indicating the genre of apologia applies to social media apologies and extends the genre of apologia. Rhetorical criticism was found to be an effective tool in identifying rhetorical postures and strategies used in social media.

Abstract:
English title: Julia and the elite. A study of how the Internet hatred developed into a media avalanche. Introduction: During February 2013 Swedish media flooded with news of online hate directed towards women after an episode of Uppdrag Granskning on SVT (2013). Female media profiles were given the opportunity to tell the entire Swedish population about the hate and threats they had been exposed to online. In this thesis we want to investigate what topics end up on the media´s agenda, how a piece of news is developed and framed. Questions: How does a piece of news considered highly newsworthy develop from when it first appears in the media until it gradually disappears? How and why did Internet hatred end up on the media´s agenda? How does the media framed the Internet hatred? Theory: To be able to answer the questions formulated in this thesis, the following theories have been used: Agenda-Setting theory, framing theory, news valuation and media logic.  Method: Quantitative content analysis of news broadcasts and debate shows from TV, radio and newspapers. Additionally a qualitative content analysis by support of a rhetorical and semiotic analysis of two debate articles and one TV feature. Result: The online hate debate was to be divided into two main debates concerning how to handle online hate in terms of the law and men who hate women in the public sphere. The majority of those who participate in the online hate debate belong to some form of either media, political, legal or academic elite. More than halv of those who fight for the online hate-cause belong to the media elite. Julia, who participate in Uppdrag Granskning on SVT, is one of the most prominent citizens who campaign for the cause.  Conclusion: The most important conclusion in this thesis is that the Internet hatred predominantly centred on Julia and the different elite groups. The media elite was both the victim and the fiercest campaigner for the cause. Even though online hate was described as a general problem in society, it was primarily framed as a problem for the media elite. An event will be considered highly newsworthy and will end up on the media´s agenda if it is, among others, unexpected, sensational and somehow focused on an elite group. A news story is more likely to turn into a media avalanche if it raises interest and engages a large audience, as it leads to an increased demand for more articles in the news reporting.

Abstract:

I vilka sammanhang presenteras konst?

The essay examines the rhetoric around art on four art galleries´ homepages. The art galleries that are examined are all located on the countryside or in smaller towns in Sweden. With their Swedish names the examined objects are the following: Bjurbäcks konsthall, Virserums konsthall, Neon Gallery and Galleri Astley. The questions that are set to the material are: What kind of art is presented and how is it conveyed? Which rhetorical instruments are used and which target groups do they aim at? In which context is art presented? Which relation to art and which perspective on art is mediated? Which relation to the site and the environment where the art galleries are located is conveyed?

The classical concepts ethos, logos and pathos - as they are used in Rhetorical analysis - have been used as instruments to investigate how the rhetoric about art is applied. Brigitte Mral means that Rhetorical analysis is a useful method to help us understand and interpret messages. How pictures and design in different ways interplay with the text, has also been important to investigate. The presented analysis in the essay shows the connections between text- and visual rhetoric, and how these elements together form a common rhetoric.

Theories that are used in the essay give perspectives on the concept of art. Definitions about what art can be are presented mainly from a philosophical perspective. But the idea of art is also presented in relation to three other spheres such as companies, technology and the media.

Another theoretical input interpreted as relevant in the essay, is the perspective on the local place in relation to the nation, EU and the global world.

The result in the essay shows that the four art galleries have chosen different ways to market art on their respective homepages. Despite this is the rhetoric on contemporary art mainly traditional. The homepage can be considered as a combined information- and marketing channel. It must function for different target groups such as collaborative partners, financiers, schools, etc. This is examined and discussed in the essay.

Abstract:
This research questions the media construction of the "anti-system" claim over a period of more than thirty years (1990-2020). Our thesis problematic questions the modalities of construction and renewal of the "anti-system posture", in connection with the transformations of the media environment within which these figures evolve. We first work on identifying and classifying the « anti-system » figures; we then examine their media and discursive trajectories. Three main analytical points guide this analysis. We first demonstrate the building of a rhetoric of resentment, which allows the anti-system actors to present themselves as both “fighters” and “victims” of “the system”. We then study the mediagenic potential of these figures: we therefore analyse their ways of adapting to the media and formats in which they are mediated. We thus examine the semio-discursive processes through which the "anti-system" interact with the major information media they are criticising, while deploying at the same time a communicational "panoply" on the Internet. We finally study their construction of “counter informational” spaces online, to spread their vision of a world in line with their political ideology

Smith, Jennifer. "Theorizing Digital Narrative: Beginnings, Endings, and Authorship." VCU Scholars Compass, 2012. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/316.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its development, critics of electronic literature have touted all that is “new” about the field, commenting on how these works make revolutionary use of non-linear structure, hyperlinks, and user interaction. Scholars of digital narrative have most often focused their critiques within the paradigms of either the text-centric structuralist model of narrativity or post-structuralist models that implicate the text as fundamentally fluid and dependent upon its reader for meaning. But neither of these approaches can account completely for the unique modes in which digital narratives prompt readerly progression, yet still exist as independent creative artifacts marked by purposive design. I argue that, in both practice and theory, we must approach digital-born narratives as belonging to a third, hybrid paradigm. In contrast to standard critical approaches, I interrogate the presumed “newness” of digital narratives to reveal many aspects of these works that hearken to print predecessors and thus confirm classical narratological theories of structure and authorship. Simultaneously, though, I demonstrate that narrative theory must be revised and expanded to account for some of the innovative techniques inherent to digital-born narrative. Across media formats, theories of narrative beginnings, endings, and authorship contribute to understanding of readerly progress and comprehension. My analysis of Leishman’s electronically animated work Deviant: The Possession of Christian Shaw shows how digital narratives extend theories of narrative beginnings, confirming theoretical suitability of existing rules of notice, expectations for mouseover actions, and the role of institutional and authorial antetexts. My close study of Jackson’s hypertext my body: a Wunderkammer likewise informs scholarship on narrative endings, as my body does not provide a neatly linear plot, and thus does not cleanly correspond to theories of endings that revolve around conceptions of instabilities or tensions. Yet I argue that there is still compelling reason to read for narrative closure, and thus narrative coherence, within this and other digital works. Finally, my inquiry into Pullinger and Joseph’s collaboratively written Flight Paths: A Networked Novel firmly justifies the theory of implied authorship in both print and digital environments and confirms the suitability of this construct to a range of texts.

Salem, Manel. "The british Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher's leadership : conservatism seen from within." Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017MON30041.

Full text
Abstract:
The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa).
This thesis focuses on the dynamics of continuity and change within the Conservative Party from 1979 to 1990, the period of Margaret Thatcher’s premierships. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that continuity had been the defining feature of the Conservative Party since the 18th and 19th centuries. The implementation of the primary values of early Conservatism continued with the advent of M. Thatcher to power although she represented, for many people, the epitome of change. This was all the more obvious in Margaret Thatcher’s public speeches when she was Leader of the Opposition. Change was, to her, necessary since British society was stagnant. In fact, Mrs. Thatcher could not accept what she considered as an “idle society.” When she was very little, Mrs. Thatcher learned that working hard was not only a duty but also an enjoyment. These feelings emanated from the values that she dearly cherished such as independence and perseverance. In this sense, therefore, change only meant the questioning of the postwar consensus. The policies implemented during the consensus period aimed at helping Britain and her citizens reconstruct. Margaret Thatcher was determined to dismantle the Keynesian social democracy that had permeated British politics since World War Two because of changing circumstances. The novelty of her politics lay in getting rid of the postwar consensus, broadly based on the welfare state and government intervention and encouraging a society whose members should be self-reliant and independent in addition to a strong economy capable of self-regulating without the need for regulation from the government. Freedom, individualism and autonomy were the ultimate consequences of deregulation. These values were the original values of Conservatism and their implementation in the 1980s was nothing but a return to Old Tory Conservatism. The continuity of the Conservative Party, which was interrupted by the politics of Keynesianism of the Labour Party, had therefore been reestablished. In order to trace this continuity, a number of archival material have been studied in the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge; archival material such as the minutes of the Conservative Party or the discussions that took place among Conservatives. Besides, how members of the Conservative Party themselves define British Conservatism sheds light on the nature of Conservatism. The Conservative Party has been considered to be the monolithic party par excellence but as a result of the increasing influence of other parties, notably the Labour Party after World War Two, Conservatives became more aware of the need to think more, innovate, create thinks tanks and express their distinct opinions more widely. They were no longer afraid of change given that “Everything needs to change, so that everything can stay the same” (The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa). An important part of this thesis deals with the economy. The variable of economic policy is perhaps the most visible criterion of success namely because it is easily quantifiable. It also reveals that economy has always been a priority among Conservatives. For Margaret Thatcher for instance, the Keynesianism of the postwar era had failed and should be abandoned. According to Thatcher, inflation was the problem to solve, not unemployment. The dichotomy between continuity and change will be analyzed not only in the public speeches of Margaret Thatcher but also the internal discussions of Conservatives. This plethora of definitions and opinions also concerns the legacy of the Iron Lady mainly through her successor, John Major, in addition to contemporary events such as the Brexit

Abstract:
The Internet is a ubiquitous feature in everyday life, but its application to social movements has yet to be completely understood. This phenomenological study examines the lived experiences of bloggers who focused on the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movement in the United States to understand the impact bloggers and their work as online activists have on existing LGBT social movement organization and operation. Data collection is gathered from semi-structured and open-ended interviews with four social movement bloggers using web-conference software over the course of three months. The results of this study indicated that internet has empowered individual activists, allowing them to gather a following and share their views to a large audience over the web, independent from existing social movement organizations. Consequently, bloggers and online activists maintain a relationship with existing social movement structure that is both collaborative and antagonistic. The results of this study contribute to the current understanding of social movement organizations as well as the impact of technological innovations on social movement advocacy.

"Assemblages of Radicalism: The Online Recruitment Practices of Islamist Terrorists." Doctoral diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.27545.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This dissertation explores the various online radicalization and recruitment practices of groups like al-Qaeda and Hezbollah, as well as Salafi Jihadists in general. I will also outline the inadequacies of the federal government's engagement with terrorist / Islamist ideologies and explore the ways in which early 20th century foundational Islamist theorists like Hasan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutb, and Abul ala Mawdudi have affected contemporary extremist Islamist groups, while exploring this myth of the ideal caliphate which persists in the ideology of contemporary extremist Islamist groups. In a larger sense, I am arguing that exploitation of the internet (particularly social networking platforms) in the radicalization of new communities of followers is much more dangerous than cyberterrorism (as in attacks on cyber networks within the government and the private sector), which is what is most often considered to be the primary threat that terrorists pose with their presence on the internet. Online radicalization should, I argue, be given more consideration when forming public policy because of the immediate danger that it poses, especially given the rise of microterrorism. Similarly, through the case studies that I am examining, I am bringing the humanities into the discussion of extremist (religious) rhetorics, an area of discourse that those scholars have largely ignored.

Young-Johnson, Connie. "Barack Obama and the rhetoric of a black president." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/23219.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the discourse of Obama’s speeches to argue my thesis that Obama won election by virtue of his rhetorical speechmaking but more specifically, his ability to manage race in those speeches. I define and refer to Obama’s rhetorical handling of race in his speechmaking throughout the campaign as the rhetoric of race management. By rhetorical race management, I mean the strategic use of race (or obfuscation of race) in one’s discourse to manage or affect the audience’s beliefs or opinions of the listener. From a communication-based standpoint, understanding how race operated in this election requires us to examine the history of racism in the United States as well as critical scholarly work on the subject. Understanding how Obama was able to manage race in his rhetoric is necessary because it forces us to perhaps reexamine and scrutinize the 2008 Presidential election more carefully for several reasons. As rhetorical scholars, if we are in the business of understanding how our icons and politicians can potentially manipulate and use our rhetorical signs and symbols against us—or in spite of us--it is in our best interest to understand why the process occurred and why we allowed it to happen. I suggest that Obama’s deliberate attempt to weave ideological constructs like patriotism and the American Dream into his campaign strategy obfuscated his representation as the marginalized “other” and created a new political identity that has little to do with marginalization. By examining the theories of scholars like Kenneth Burke, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Walter Fisher, and Dana Cloud, I outline how race and racism historically operated in our political elections, from both a sociopolitical, or quantitative perspective, as well as a critical perspective. By using a multimethod analysis, we are better positioned to understand how Barack Obama successfully played the race card in the Presidential Election of 2008. More importantly, I argue in my conclusion why his use of rhetorical race management, was absolutely necessary if he were to become the first African-American president in a historically racist country.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis titled "Language Correctness and Incorrectness as an Argument Used in Online Discussions" deals with a language criticism which is used as an argument in online discussions. Firstly, the thesis frames language and speech, argumentation, rhetoric, and communication. Then it introduces online discussions and describes how they work, and how they contribute to communication. It is also focused on the users as creators of content in online discussions. The thesis analyzes the corpus of online discussions in which the argumentation based on language correctness and incorrectness is contained. According to communication situations, the thesis classifies by what language criticism is started, what arguments are used by the critics, how the critized react, and how the others perceive language criticism. The research also examines the consequence of language criticism in online discussions. The goal of the thesis is to determinate whether and how language incorrectness may affect information value of particular post, and how the arguments based on language correctness and incorrectness are used.

Abstract:
Master thesis called "Users rhetoric of selected asynchronous discussions on the Internet" studies culture of language and rhetorical cultivation in the selected discussion pieces from the three news servers, namely Aktuálně.cz., iDnes.cz and Neviditelný pes. Under many of these virtual newspaper articles there are discussions that are meant to develop read ideas and opinions. This discussion space is accessible for practically everyone who has an access to the Internet, which is one of the characteristics and advantages of network media over traditional ones. However limitations of traditional media anticipated the use of appropriate and cultivated language. Network media have different characteristics and asynchronous discussion make other demands on language in them. Natural language is the basic communication medium, which is the primary content of most mass media. In the practical part there is an examination of users speech behavior in these discussions. The rhetorical analysis is used there, which allows a holistic view of speech including its argumentative construction. The aim is to find out what this type of online dialogues is characteristic from the point of view of rhetoric.

Abstract:
Master's thesis is devoted to the analysis of records in Twitter by Vladimir Zhirinovsky. In the introduction, the research objectives are specified, the observations of specialists considering the features of Vladimir Zhirinovsky's image are summarized, and the research hypothesis is formed. The first chapter considers modern Internet communication, describes its forms and genres, establishes a functional range of blogs of politicians. In the second chapter, the results of a free associative experiment are given, which allow us to establish the rhetorical potential of the keywords that occur in Twitter. The syntactic component of Twitter is analyzed. When considering lexical means, special attention is paid to socio-political, socio-economic vocabulary, and separately examined axiologically marked vocabulary. The conclusion includes formulations of the final results of the study.

(11104764), Allegra W. Smith. "Digital Age: A Study of Older Adults' User Experiences with Technology." Thesis, 2021.

Find full text
Abstract:
Older adults aged 60+ represent the fastest growing segment of the US population, yet they are rarely seen as users of technology. Members of this age cohort often struggle with the material and conceptual requirements of computing—such as clicking small targets or remembering usernames and passwords for account logins—leading them to adopt technologies like smartphones and social media at much lower rates than their younger counterparts. Digital devices and interfaces are not typically designed with older adult users in mind, even though all users are always aging, and the “silver economy” represents a powerful, and often untapped, market for technological innovations. The little existing research in this area often conflates age with disability, framing elders according to a deficit model. While it is certainly important to consider the impacts that aging bodies have on technology use, they are not the sole factor shaping usage for older age cohorts. Moreover, if we reduce elder users to their “impairments,” we risk stereotyping them in ways that curtail design possibilities, as well as these users’ possibilities for full participation in digital life. For this reason, studies of technology users aged 60+ and their communities are necessary to shed light on the multifaceted needs of older age cohorts, and the interventions into technology design, documentation, and education that can help them reach their digital goals.

To build an understanding of the unique technology use of a group of the oldest Americans (aged 75+), as well as to assess their needs and desires for digital engagement, I conducted interviews and observations with computer users in a senior living community. Data collection revealed a great diversity of computing purposes and activities, ranging from social functions such as email and messaging, to managing finance and medicine, to art and design applications, and beyond. Moreover, participants’ accounts of how and where they developed their computing skills shed light on their motivations for engaging with technology, as well as their fears of technology’s intrusiveness. Analysis of participants’ performance on a series of digital tasks yielded insights into physical and cognitive factors, as well as a clear divide in forms of knowledge and mental models that older adults draw upon when attempting to engage with technology. To conclude, I provide recommendations for technology design and education, as well as future research to account for age as a factor mediating user experience.
