------- ABSTRACT -------

Full textDeveloping a sense of self as an independent and unique person, or identity, is an important developmental milestone for adolescents and young adults. Thus, understanding the factors that influence an individual’s identity is useful. This thesis examines two factors that influence interpersonal identity: internal working models of attachment and perceived parenting. Internal working models are an individual’s cognitive roadmaps of self-worthiness and other-trustworthiness. Perceived parenting consists of perceptions of parental support and parental over-control during childhood and adolescence. A sample of 397 college students (107 males, 287 females, 2 others) receiving course credit at a Southern university were surveyed using online Likert-type questionnaires to determine whether or not internal working models of attachment mediate the relation between perceived parenting and interpersonal identity. Results indicated that there was evidence that internal working models do mediate the relation between perceived parenting and interpersonal identity. However, this research will need to be approached longitudinally and use objective assessments of parental behaviors, rather than subjective assessments. However, there is enough evidence in this study to continue the endeavor.

The results revealed that rumination, internal model of others, and negative beliefs about psychological help significantly predicted the increase in psychological symptoms of Turkish university students. Positive beliefs about psychological help did not relate to psychological symptoms of university students for the current set of data. In addition to this, rumination mediated the relationship between internal model of self and psychological symptoms of university students.
ABSTRACT: From a psychoanalytic and developmental approach based, on the one hand in psychoanalytic conceptual assumptions of Freud, the Psychosomatic School of Paris (Pierre Marty), of W. Bion and D. Winnicott postulates and the integrative conceptions of A. Green, concerning psychoanalytic, developmental and neurophysiological aspects inherent to psychosomatic disorders; and on the other hand, in the main evolutionary theories of attachment postulated by J. Bowlby and M. Ainsworth, we focused on the comparative analysis of case studies in asthmatic subjects, in which underlying its problematic draw up a history of traumatic experience (loss, separation or rejection) that may be the cause of failed primary relationships, or posthumous. Our hypothesis is that, in the primary relational core lies the cornerstone of this bidirectional and inseparable complex system that is the body-mind. The conclusions we have reached is that these failures, arising from primary relational trauma, are reflected in current internal working models and therefore in the relationship patterns throughout life. Plus behind major anxieties and defense mechanisms, in which somatization represents the largest and most visible expression of what constitutes the object loss anxiety. Asthma seems to represent in these subjects, the inability to symbolize and give meaning to this overwhelming affects, but also and above all as the embodiment of a profound loss anxiety of the object’s love, whose anaclitic relationship through lifespan is analogous to the function of the umbilical cord in the primitive stages of intrauterine existence.

ABSTRACT: The present study aims to clarify the relation between attachment representations and emotional knowledge in preschool children. 176 children from Lisbon participated in the study, they were between 3 and 5 years of age. Quality of attachment representations was assessed with the security scale of Attachment Story Completion Task and emotional knowledge was assessed with the portuguese adaptation of Affect Knowledge Test. Our results suggest that children with secure internal working models show more emotional knowledge. No differences were found regarding verbal ability. These findings suggest that children with secure internal working models experience warmer relationships with their caregivers, sharing and discussing emotional experiences in an open and supported way, allowing for a greater emotional knowledge.

---------- ABSTRACT ---------- Being one of the greatest developmental achievements within the preschool period, the beginning of spontaneous narrative competence highlights children’s mental representations of experience, implying the attribution of emotional meanings which are susceptible to be shared and, ultimately, co-constructed. Enabling the communication of past and present events, as well as future expectations, this new capacity will allow children to organize and to give temporal, causal and evaluative meanings to daily happenings, representing a major step towards the abilities of understanding and regulating their own emotional lives (see Fivush, 2008).Over the past 30 years, the accepting of this premise has led to a significant increase in the use of narrative eliciting methodologies, identified as a valid way to study the quality and organization of children’s Internal Working Models. The Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT, Bretherton & Ridgeway, 1990) was created with the aim of identifying individual differences in how children enact different situations related to attachment. So far, it has been used in different cultures, with both normative and clinical samples. Yet, more studies are needed to legitimize its convergent and discriminative validity, goal that has not been fully accomplished partially due to the fact that the instrument allows researchers to use a great diversity of coding systems. Amplifying the research made with the ASCT in the Portuguese population, the first 2 empirical studies focus mainly on the psychometric characteristics presented by the instrument, when applied to a normative sample of children aged between 3 and 7 years old. In the 1st study, 159 children’s ASCT security showed no significant associations with socio-demographic family variables, neither with participants’ age. We found a positive association, though weak, with the verbal I.Q., assessed with the WPPSI-R. In a subsample of 34 children, it was found that, when considered globally and at the intra-subject level, security remained moderately stable after 11 months. In the 2nd study the narratives of 73 children were analyzed independently by two research teams trained, respectively, in the Dusseldorf Coding and Classification System and in a Security Scale. The associative analysis of the inter-systems values showed that these two systems seem to be only moderately interrelated. Based on narrative passages, it is discussed the possibility that the two systems emphasize different representational dimensions, with special attention being given to gender issues. In the 3rd study, 38 mother/child and 27 father/child dyads participated, independently, in a memory-talk task (Fivush & Fromhoff, 1988). The results show strong links between the elaborative features of parental narrative style and children's active participation in the task, with relational specificity showing to be an important aspect. Providing empirical support for one of Attachment’s Theory most central assumptions (i.e. open emotional communication within the child/caregiver relationship uphold the organization of secure IWM), the presence of hostility in the dyadic interaction was negatively associated with the security of the ASCT narratives concurrently produced. Data also suggest that the elaborative features of fathers’ narrative style play a specific, facilitating, role, in preschoolers’ organization of secure attachment representations. Therefore, support is given to the thesis that communicative exchanges with the father figure may foster preschoolers’ competences regarding narrative sharing with other social partners.

Full textThe objective of this study was to evaluate how the quality of attachment can influence emotional and socio-cognitive development. The Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT, Bretherton, Ridgeway & Cassidy, 1990) was applied to 72 preschool children. The hypothesis was that there may be gender differences during the concretization of this task, favouring girls in the elaboration of complex speech whereas boys would emphasize assertive solutions to the emotional conflicts in the stories. So, quality of attachment is related to better consolidation of affects and its manifestations under certain social circumstances. There may be differences of gender in these phenomena. It is expected that children with secure Internal Working Models, will show increased emotional knowledge and that there are also differences of gender during the concretization of this task. There was a significant correlation between the security scale of and the scale of Coherence of the stories. Children with secure Internal Working Models showed a successful resolution of the conflicts during the ASCT, whereas children with more unsecure Internal Working Models told inappropriate stories or showed bizarre scenarios during this task. The results of the present work didn’t show any differences of gender during the concretization of the tasks inherent to the ASCT, namely in the scale of Safety and of Coherence. It is also confirmed that children with a secure attachment, experience a warmer relationship with their caregivers, and can talk appropriately about their emotions in certain contexts, which allows them to show a better knowledge and a correct expression about emotions.

Full textThe public transportation system of Lyons – France’s second most populous city, is operated by the Compagnie des omnibus et tramways de Lyon (OTL). This private corporation was founded in 1879. In common with all French public service companies, OTL pre-empted employment legislation by providing employment guarantees and social benefits for certain grades employees, the “incumbents”. Thanks to working rules, most of incumbents, employees with set schedule and assignement, were able to forecast forthcoming hours or working places. All these measures were defined in the collective agreements which OTL entered into with the strong union and the local authorities – the city of Lyons and the département du Rhône.But OTL also had to adapt its workforce to the numbers of passengers conveyed and kilometers covered against a background of wild workload fluctuations and sought to reduce costs. So as early as the dawn of the 20th century the OTL company defined flexible working practices built around working paces, times and occupations. Until 1949, all staff was hired with employment contracts that combined open or fixed-term contracts with part-time or full-time work, before they possibly were offered a more stable post: the “casuals” were hired to work only on Sundays or weekdays on an as needs basis and could be fired without compensation. Internal flexibility also affected the “incumbents”, primarily at the start of their careers.Three strong trends emerge from analyzing the history of OTL personnel management. First, the conceptualization and sophistication of flexible practices were concomitant with the advent of guarantees achieved by the incumbents. Second, the temporal working rules became more and more complex. Third, the workforce was divided between incumbents who stayed in the firm thirty years and lots of casuals or incumbents who resigned because of low wages and flexibility, who worked a few weeks

According to attachment theory, internal working model develops through infants-caregiver interaction process. It is a kind of stable trait, including personal beliefs, personal needs, and personal goals, so that adults with different attachment style will show their difference in their daily interaction. This study was to find out the difference of daily interaction between secure, ambivalent, and avoidant adults. Using Rochester Interaction Record(RIR) as materials, we found that the influence of internal working model depends on those who subjects interact, the main difference was shown when subjects interact with middle-out group friends. Besides, when we choose different type of index, people with different styles will show different interaction patterns.

An Analysis and Comparison of Internal Working Model of Attachments of the Insecure Attachment Senior High School Students Abstract The major purpose of this study was to explore the internal working model of attachments of the insecure attachment senior high school students. Attachment type checklist, developed by the researcher, was preliminarily used to sift out six of the insecure attachment senior high school students. The process of interviewing was tape-recorded and copied down verbatim as researching materials. Then, case analysis, classification of types, and comparison among different types were conducted according to the framework developed by Collins and Read’s (1994) “Internal Working Model” and Horney’s (1945) “A Model for Conceptualizing Client Dynamic.” The findings of this study were as follows: First, the interviewee A’s internal working model of attachments belonged to the pleasing(moving toward others)type. Second, the interviewee B’s internal working model of attachments belonged to the pleasing type and secondarily the avoiding (moving away from others) type . Third, the interviewee C’s internal working model of attachments primarily belonged to the avoiding type and the pleasing type. Fourth, the interviewee D’s internal working model of attachments primarily belonged to the avoiding (moving away from others) type, the intimidating (moving against others) type and the pleasing type. Fifth, the interviewee E’s internal working model of attachments belonged to the intimidating type. Sixth, the interviewee F’s internal working model of attachments belonged to the intimidating type. Seventh, the researcher compared the differences of the interviewees’ internal working models of attachments. The researcher found that the interviewee’s internal working models of attachments were special, characteristic, complex and stable, and formed the hierarchical network of attachment representations. The early parenthood would influence the development of the brotherhood and the companionship. Because of the different grown-up experiences and backgrounds, the interviewees’ internal working models of attachments were different, and their problems in relationships and behaviors were different, too. Besides, the people of the three insecure types had the negative parenthood, brotherhood, and companionship. They tended to have negative feelings. This study also found that the tools of classifying attachment types had the limits because the attachment types can’t be clearly distinct. Besides, the theory of attachment types had problems because it was not easy to find the typical avoiding type and some interviewees had more than one attachment types. Last, the researcher advanced the suggestions for counselors and for future study. Keywords: attachment relationship, attachment types, internal working model of attachments.

Full textThis research was inspired by the work of John Bowlby on infant attachment and the psychoanalytic writings of Freud and Winnicott on the father figure. Three objectives were formulated for this exploratory study; a) Will the young preschool boy spontaneously project his paternal representations in the context of a series of symbolic free play sessions? b) If so, what is the nature of the paternal representations? c) Is there a relationship between the type of attachment as evaluated with a standardized instrument and the paternal representation projected into the free play sessions? Ten four year old boys were filmed in their own homes and in the daycare setting during an average of four sessions each for a total of two and a half hours. The type of attachment was evaluated with the Attachment Story Completion Task. The results showed that all of the boys were capable of projecting paternal representations onto the father figures. All of the children perceived these figures as a source of protection and eight out of ten verbally expressed their attachment to them. One insecure boy (type A) did not invoke the father figure in his play and in real life his father was rarely at home. The remaining insecure boy (a very angry type C) showed consistent negative interaction with the father figure throughout the sessions. It seems that the symbolic play allow the child to project adequatly the representation of the father figure. These representations are linked to the attachment type that the children possessed at the moment of the evaluation.

ABSTRACT: The present study, based on Bowlby/Ainsworth’s attachment theory, aims to study the continuity of quality of attachment in the preschool years, and its relation to kindergarten teacher-child attachment quality. Firstly, we examined the associations between infant-mother and infant-father secure base behaviours and attachment representation in preschooler years in a sample of 71 child-mother and child-father dyads, we used as instruments the Attachment Behaviour Q-Set (AQS – version 3.0, Waters, 1995), the Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT, Bretherton & Ridgeway, 1990) and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence - Revised (WPPSI-R, 1989; portuguese version of Seabra-Santos et al., 2003). Our results revealed that children were able to use both parents as secure base and those children with a secure attachment relation developed an internal working model of secure attachment. Secondly, we tried to understand the processes involved in the transition from sensorimotor to symbolic representations, analyzing two potential inputs for the construction of the child mental representations of secure base information: children’s own sensorimotor representations from earlier years based on their secure base behaviours with father and mother and their parents’ attachment scripts in a sample of 64 child-mother and child-father dyads. We used as instuments the AQS (version 3.0, Waters, 1995), the ASCT (Bretherton & Ridgeway, 1990), the WPPSI-R (1989; portuguese version of Seabra-Santos et al., 2003) and the Attachment Script Assessment (ASA – Waters & Rodrigues-Doolabh, 2004, unpublished manual). The results suggest that children’s secure base behaviours can be predicted from parents’s attachment scripts and that only children’s sensoriomotor representations based on their secure base behaviours were predicting child mental representations, contrary to our expectations. Finally, we analyzed the relation between children’s attachment representations and the quality of kindergarten teacher-child relationships, in a sample of 52 children and 4 kindergarten teachers. We used as instruments the ASCT (Bretherton & Ridgeway, 1990), the WPPSI-R (portuguese version of Seabra-Santos et al., 2003) and the Teachers’ ratings of child secure base behavior and emotion regulation (PCV-P, Dias, Soares e Freire, 2004). Our data suggest that co-construction of a close attachment-relevant relationship with a kindergarten teacher in early childhood is, in part, a function of the quality of parent-child attachment relationships, but also of child verbal development. In general, our results contribute to the ongoing discussion about the child’s construction of an integrated model of attachment relations, participating in two or more qualitatively distinct relationships.

Narratives from Depressed Mothers: An Exploration of Their Internal Working Models Abstract Narrative accounts help us to examine how individuals construct their lives as they experience life events within their family of origin and family of marriage. The purposes of this study were to explore the life stories of depressed mothers and in tern to understand their internal working models and the Depression syndromes from their subjective feelings. The participants of this study have been diagnosed as Depression and transferred by a psychiatry doctor. All participants were mothers have child/children under eighteen-year of age. Based on informed consents, participants provided their stories in intensive interviews conducted separately by this researcher. This research employs qualitative methods in the investigation of narratives provided by depressed mothers, and employed holistic-content interpretation of narratives to interpret their individual life story. In order to explore the mother''s inner world and generate dialogues among readers, researcher and depressed mothers, researcher adopted the Bowlby''s attachment theory and Collins and Read''s concept of internal working model. They suggest that internal working model includes four interrelated components, which were a) memories of attachment-related experiences, b) beliefs, attitudes, and expectations, c) attachment-related goals and needs, and d) Strategies and plans. Research results obtained through their life narratives through which were as follows: 1.Negative life experiences in depressed mother''s childhood leaded to increase insecure attachment pattern. And insecure attachment pattern tended to affect the depressed mother''s intimate relationships. The depressed mother''s internal working models had to do with their depression were a) the experience of loss, such as Ms. A experienced father''s death, b) to be refused and severe abused by their parents, such as Ms. C, c) beliefs and attitudes connected with cognitive distortions and negative thinking, and d) through the intergenerational transmission of internal working models also transmit the risk of depression. 2.The triggered factor of mother''s depression came from the stress from life events. These life events were related to their husbands and their children, where the events related to their children always went with their married distresses. Moreover, reflections, suggestions, and discussions of research results were given further to provide useful informations and directions for future research. Key words: depression, internal working model, attachment, and narrative research

ABSTRACT: This study, carried out at the Dona Estefânia Hospital, had the purpose of analyzing the way burned children victims adapted to changes in their body image. It was based on the attachment type and the internal model of working with the self. The sample was constituted by fifty children, between 62 and 95 months of age (x = 77,74 ; s = 3,69), of both sexes, which were hospitalized between 2001 and 2008. Data were collected by means of three instruments: Drawing Human Figure Test (Goodenough, 1982) to evaluate the image expression that the child projects of himself, Family Juvenile Drawing (Kaplan & Main, 1986, translated by Veríssimo and Santos, 2001) to measure the child representation of the quality of attachment, and Puppet Interview (Cassidy, 1986) to evaluate the internal working model of the Self. The present results show the influence that the attachment relationship established between the mother and the child has in the internal model of working of the self organization. Although quantitatively no significant differences were found, a qualitative analysis has showed that children with a secure attachment type and a dynamic positive internal model invest more in their drawings, projecting in a harmonious way their image of themselves, no matter their age, burn degree and scar’s visibility. In this sense, we may conclude that the quality of attachment and the dynamic internal model are determinants of the way children adapt to an altered body image, after suffered a burn accident.

Full textABSTRACT: The present study attempts to analyze the concurrent relation between internal representations of attachment and social competence in preschool children, at 5 years old. It was applied to a sample of 102 children the Attachment Story Completion Task, to evaluate the Internal Working Models of attachment, and a set of social competence indicators that comprehend the evaluation of this construct according to the Hierarchical Model. It was also used the revised edition of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence to monitor the effects of language ability in the production of narratives. A positive and significant correlation was found between the attachment representations and the sociometric measures of social competence that define the social acceptance domain. These results suggest that children with a secure representation of the attachment relationships are socially more active, initiating peers’ interaction which, in turn, contributes to their social acceptance.

ABSTRACT: Children in pre-school age form mental representations or internal working models of attachment relationships and are able to use these representations in order to fell secure, even in the absence of the attachment figure. Some authors suggest that in this age it is possible to access these internal models, through the development of narratives. Sixty-nine portuguese children were studied through the Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT) (Bretherton and Ridgeway, 1990). Each history is formulated to unleash corresponding answers to a particular question of attachment. With this instrument it was possible to access children’ internal models and to value the Security, Coherence and Resolution. Positive and significant correlations were found between the values, which validates the usage of this instrument in valuating internal working models. The results show that the mother was the most chosen figure by the children to resolve the central problem, which makes sense, since it is the mother who more frequently provides care and responds to the necessities of comfort, food and affection of the child. These results show that the ASCT narratives not only portrait the experiences between the children and their parental figures, but also allow us to access a secure base scrip.

The purpose of this study was to develop measures of children’s interpretation of parenting, so as to understand the contents of their interpretation. Further, the study explored the relationships among children’s interpretation, parenting practice and children’s internal working model, as well as the medicating effect of children’s interpretation between parenting practice and their internal working model. The study adopted questionnaire survey as method, with tools including “Good Intention and Care Interpretation of Parenting Scale”, “Controlled by Power Interpretation of Parenting Scale”, which were developed in this study, as well as “Chinese Version of Parental Bonding Instrument”, and “Inventory of Internal Working Model”, which were developed by previous researchers. The target population of this study were university students in Taiwan, and convenient sampling was used to collect the data. Four hundred sixty-four valid samples were collected. Descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation and regression analysis were used to analyze the collected data. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. The “Good Intention and Care Interpretation of Parenting Scale” and “Authority-Controlled Interpretation of Parenting Scale” went through confirmatory analysis, and good model fit was observed. Moreover, the scales had good internal consistency. The results reflected that both the scales were quite good measurements. 2. The results suggested that care parenting was positively associated with children’s good intention and care interpretation, yet negatively associated with their authority-controlled interpretation. Overprotection parenting was negatively associated with children’s good intention and care interpretation, but positively associated with their authority-controlled interpretation. 3. The results suggested that care parenting was positively associated with children’s internal working model, while overprotection parenting was negatively associated with children’s internal working model. 4. The results suggested that children’s good intention and care interpretation was positively associated with their internal working model, while their authority-controlled interpretation was negatively associated with their internal working model. 5. The results suggested that between care parenting and children’s internal working model, children’s good intention and care interpretation had partially mediating effect, but their authority-controlled interpretation did not have such effect between the two variables. On the other hand, between care parenting and children’s internal working model, both children’s good intention and care interpretation as well as their authority-controlled interpretation had partially mediating effect. In sum, under care parenting, children interpreted parenting as good intention. Even when they interpret parenting as being controlled by parental authority, it did not have negative impact on their internal working models. On the other hand, under overprotection parenting, even though children’s interpretation parenting as good intention behind it, their interpretation as controlled by parental power plus the parenting practice itself might render negative impact on their internal working models. Based on these conclusion, implications were provided for counselors and researchers related to parent education.

Full textInserted in a development perspective and framed by the Attachment Theory the present study is brought up upon the knowledge and access to secure base script of 33 mothers with children in preschool, using the Narrative Assessment of Adult Attachment Representations. Some methodological requirements of this assessment instrument were tested (e.g. verbal competence control) and also analyzed the relationship between secure base script and the satisfaction with maternal perceived social support. Different types of instruments were used during this work: Narrative Assessment of Adult Attachment Representations, Verbal Comprehension Index and Social Support Satisfaction Scale. The results achieved indicate acceptable levels of reliability and internal validity of the used assessment instrument. The study shows, contradicting previous data, a marginally significant correlation between maternal scripts and the Verbal Comprehension Index. In the present sample, mothers accessed and used the secure base script to produced narratives that refer to attachment contents. Only one dimension of the perceived social support, Social Activities, is connected with the maternal script quality. Results have been discussed according to the Attachment Theory by Bowlby and Ainsworth and the Perceived Social Support.

ABSTRACT: This study aims to understand how the father’s internal working models can cause repercussions in the involvement with his child, bridging the gap in the literature. The sample consists of 54 dyads mother/child and father/child and children have, on average, 32.26 months (SD=3.03). Families belong to a medium/medium high socio-economic level and all fathers and mothers work outside the home. This study used The “Narrative Assessment of Adult Attachment Representations” (Waters & Rodrigues-Doolabh, 2004) to analyze the father’s internal working models and applied to them a questionnaire about their involvement with their children (Monteiro, Veríssimo, Castro & Oliveira, 2006). The results indicate that fathers who have a secure base script in the narratives Adult/Child, are more involved in practical care to their children, which allow us to affirm that early relationships are motivating a greater involvement in practical activities compared to current relationships that adults establish.
