Abstract:
Beer has been presenting in human life for a long time. The oldest written proof of beer production, the “Monument Bleu”, comes from Mesopotamia, the 3rd millennium BC and by this time brewing was regulated by law (Ulischberger, 1982). Nowadays, globalization liberates the markets and large brewing companies achieve tremendous growth. In 2016, trade value of beer made from malt was 13,8 billion USD, according to the UNComtrade (2019) data. The main exporter was Mexico with 27% share in total beer export, followed by three EU beer producers: Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with shares of 14%, 11% and 9%, respectively. On the other side, beer import was even more concentrated: the USA represented 35% of global beer import, followed by France and the United Kingdom (5-5%), China (4.5%) and Italy (4.3%). In case of beer, domestic consumption largely determines the industry, because the largest producers are not the top exporters. Based on FAO (2019) data, in 2014, 28% of global beer production was brewed in China, followed by the USA (the biggest importer - 13%), and 8% was produced in Brazil. Germany and Mexico, the two main exporters, only had 5-5% of market shares in terms of global beer production. In our study we measured competitiveness using the index of Symmetric Revealed Comparative Advantage (SRCA), calculated for all countries exporting beer in the period of 1988-2017. In order to identify factors influencing SRCA, we applied panel-data linear models by using feasible generalized least squares (FGLS). We used the following independent variables for the model: barley production, FDI (foreign direct investment) levels, population, per capita GDP, per capita beer consumption, beer export unit value, number of beers with geographical indications, EU membership (as a dummy variable) and beer production.

The current market and the status of international beer brands and their performance on the Social Network Instagram were analyzed in depth in the present research paper. Specifically, it analyzed what social media marketing activities related to the purchase intention of young limeños (people from Lima, Perú) between the ages of 18 and 24 belonging to a socio-economic sector A and B. These activities analyzed were content, interaction, community, information, and customization. Based on marketing activities on Instagram and the intention to purchase, the objectives and hypotheses of the research were raised, where it was sought to confirm whether there was a relationship between each activity raised and the intention to purchase. To deepen this research, several interviews, focus group and surveys were conducted on consumers and experts. So, we were able to know more closely the thoughts that the target audience has regarding the management or management of Instagram that have the different brands of international beers that are presented in Peru. It is concluded, after qualitative and quantitative analysis, that activities such as content, community, interaction and personalization (customization) have a relationship with the intention to purchase or re-purchase of our interviewees and respondents. On the contrary, the information proved unrelated to the intent to purchase. Based on this, some comments were made that could help brands improve their performance on Instagram.

The beef industry is a very important in the food sector of agriculture and over the past two decades the United States beef industry has faced many challenges. Over time the distribution of beef exports have changed due to food safety issues and government policies, not just in the U.S., but on a global scale forcing U.S. beef producers to diversify their export outputs to other countries that were not previously strong leaders in the export business. The U.S. must be strategic in their production decisions in order to continue to compete on a global level to avoid significant loss during adverse conditions. One of the major challenges that the U.S. industry has faced is the discovery of BSE in late 2003 in the state of Washington, which led to the closing of many borders to countries who had a significant impact on the beef industry in the U.S. Since U.S. beef is highly regarded by consumers for its quality worldwide, it is important to understand what changes have taken place in the past to have a full understanding of what changes need to be made in the future. The objective of this thesis is to look at how the distribution of the value, volume and price of U.S. beef exports have changed over the past two decades. By looking at how this has changed we will be able to see what countries are emerging as important customers and how others have declined. This is extremely important since some of the major importing countries have changed or put restrictions on the U.S. beef industry over the past two decades and the industry needs to understand these changes so that they can remain strong in the export sector. By analyzing the global trends of U.S. beef exports by value, volume and price across principal regions of the world, research will show us how to change for future changes. By assessing the effect of the discovery of BSE in the U.S on changes in the distribution of beef exports across the global regions, research will show who emerged when other countries declined. By using this research, the foregoing results will be helpful to inform the industry on what export market strategy can be developed for the U.S. beef industry. The results suggest that BSE had some negative effect on the U.S. beef industry in terms of the value and volume but did not have an impact on the price per pound of beef. Some regions had a larger impact than others when BSE was discovered, such as East Asia, but during this other regions, such as North America, came through and became the leaders in exports for U.S. beef. While there was some growth from the Rest of the World, there was not enough of an impact to compete with the foregoing countries.

Abstract:

Cross-national differences in regulation have become the most significant barrier to international trade. My dissertation attempts to explain why states sometimes choose to reduce these regulatory trade barriers but at other times choose to maintain or increase them. To do this, I examine the international negotiation over regulatory trade barriers in three in-depth case studies, one from each of the three main areas of the international trade in goods: manufacturing, agriculture, and high-technology. The first investigates consumer safety, labor-related domestic content, and environmental regulations in the trade in automobiles in North America and the European Union. The second analyzes mad-cow safety regulations and the trade in beef between the United States and Japan. The third examines intellectual property regulations and the trade in pharmaceuticals between the United States and India. I contend that the best way to explain this variation is by examining the motivations of three sets of actors (businesses, activists, and government officials) and the political bargaining between those three groups. Businesses seek to reduce regulatory barriers when those barriers raise production costs or inhibit market access. They may however choose to end that pursuit if those regulations are cheap to comply with or pursuing their reduction carries major reputational risk. Activists defend regulatory barriers when they perceive those regulations to be the sole effective means to address a societal problem they are concerned about. They may accept a reduction in regulatory barriers if those barriers have low salience or their opposition is bought out through private standards, corporate social responsibility, or some other arrangement in which businesses are not directly regulated by government. Government officials choose whether to side with businesses or activist groups based on their relative prioritization of trade and regulatory independence, their staffing, and whom they identify as their core constituency. Businesses are likely to succeed at reducing a regulatory trade barrier when they can link their desire for that reduction with broader concerns about economic competitiveness while activist organizations are likely to succeed at defending regulatory trade barriers when they can link their desire for maintaining or increasing that barrier with preventing needless death. This dissertation thus adds to the current understanding of international political economy by demonstrating that multinational corporations have less political power than is commonly assumed and by augmenting traditional explanations of trade politics based on economic cleavages through analyzing activists’ engagement in trade politics now that trade politics significantly affects regulations

Dshurina, Stella Borissova. "Has the state of war been made redundant by the UN Charter regime on the use of force?" Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/12669.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
Does war still exist according to international law? On the one hand, the answer is obviously in the affirmative - hostilities including the use of force between states do take place and rules of international law regulating them do exist. Less obvious, however, is whether a state of war as a condition creating legal consequences not only for the parties involved, but also for other states, is still legally relevant. While there have been many conflicts since 1945, few of them have been characterized as “war” and no declarations of war have been made. Hence, there is a tendency to avoid the term “war” on the ground that it is “arcane” and largely superseded by the term “international armed conflict”. Moreover, it has been claimed that a state of war is incompatible with the UN Charter and therefore can no longer exist under international law so that a qualification of a conflict as “war” as opposed to “armed conflict” would have no legal consequences. This dissertation will examine whether the concept of war is still relevant and necessary despite the introduction of the modern concept of international armed conflict. In the course of answering it, three further questions need to be posed. First, is it compatible with the UN Charter to continue to invoke the concept of “war”? Second, what are the consequences of recognizing a state of war as a contemporary legal concept? Finally, are there any norms in international law which are applicable in a state of war only?

Yang, Yijia. "Have the Chinese Financial Markets Been Manipulated Before the CPC National Congresses?" Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1102.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examined the probability that the Chinese financial markets have been manipulated prior to the most recent three CPC National Congresses. Based on historical data, it used the Monte Carlo simulation to calculate the probability of the weekly and monthly percentage change of the SSE50 Index and the RMB to USD central parity rate one week and one month prior to the most recent 17th, 18th and 19th CPC National Congress. The results indicate that the weekly and monthly percentage change of both the SSE 50 Index and the RMB to USD central parity rate prior to all three Congresses would be extremely unlikely if both markets have moved in a manner consistent with their previous stochastic movements. It is highly likely that the Chinese financial markets have been manipulated prior to the most recent three CPC National Congress. This study also makes conjectures about manipulators’ motivations behind the market manipulation, assuming the existence of market manipulations.

Abstract:
The Computerized Delivery Sequence (CDS) file contains listings for nearly all addresses in the United States. Survey researchers use the CDS as a sampling frame from which to draw an address-based sample (ABS). More than 700,000 addresses on the CDS are marked as drop points, which are mail receptacles shared by multiple housing units (drop units). Drop points are a challenge to sample and present a potential source of error because of their "one-to-many" relationships. Several techniques have been developed to overcome this challenge, including deleting them from the frame or sampling all units at a given drop point. This paper serves as an introduction to these challenges, discusses the pros and cons to each "solution," and provides a list of best practices.

Bridges, Todd, Jeffrey King, Jonathan Simm, Michael Beck, Georganna Collins, Quirjin Lodder, and Ram Mohan. Overview : International Guidelines on Natural and Nature-Based Features for Flood Risk Management. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41945.

Full text
Abstract:
The application of natural and nature‑based features (NNBF) has grown steadily over the past 20 years, supported by calls for innovation in flood risk management (FRM) and nature‑based solutions from many different perspectives and organizations. Technical advancements in support of NNBF are increasingly the subject of peer‑reviewed and other technical literature. A variety of guidance has been published by numerous organizations to inform program‑level action and technical practice for specific types of nature‑based solutions. This effort to develop international guidelines on the use of NNBF was motivated by the need for a comprehensive guide that draws directly on the growing body of knowledge and experience from around the world to inform the process of conceptualizing, planning, designing, engineering, constructing, and operating NNBF.

Picciotto, Sol. The Contested Shaping of International Tax Rules: The Growth of Services and the Revival of Fractional Apportionment. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2021.014.

Full text
Abstract:
The digitalisation of the economy has spotlighted fundamental flaws in international tax rules, which have been exacerbated since the 1970s with the wider shift to the services economy and the growth of international services. These systemic flaws have been more evident from the perspective of countries that are mainly importers of services that have tried to retain rights to tax profits at the source from which they derive. While they succeeded in retaining a wider scope for source taxation, key provisions have been subject to continuing conflicts and contestation over their formulation and interpretation, leaving a legacy of ambiguity and confusion. Digitalisation has now sparked a dramatic reversal of perspective by more developed countries and an acceptance of principles they have long resisted: that taxation of transnational corporations can be based on apportionment of an appropriate fraction of their global income and can be by countries from where they derive income, regardless of physical presence. This paper outlines the contested process that has shaped the formulation of key provisions on taxation of international services, discusses the recent moves to reshape these rules and evaluates some policy options for capital-importing countries to strengthen their taxing rights in the current context.

Abstract:
To deliver infrastructure that sustain our communities, economy, and environment, we must innovate, modernize, and even revolutionize our approach to infrastructure development. Change takes courage, but as one starts down the path of innovation, what was once novel becomes more familiar, more established. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is walking this path with our partners through the Engineering With Nature (EWN) Initiative, integrating human engineering with natural systems. The International Guidelines on Natural and Nature-Based Features for Flood Risk Management are the next step toward revolutionary infrastructure development—a set of real-world guidelines to help familiarize us with what was once novel. USACE and collaborators around the world have been building, learning, and documenting the best practices for constructing Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF) for decades. The consolidation of these lessons into a single guidance document gives decision-makers and practitioners a much-needed resource to pursue, consider, and apply NNBF for flood risk management while expanding value through infrastructure. Relationships and partnerships are vital ingredients for innovation and progress. The NNBF Guidelines was achieved because of the strong relationships in the nature-based engineering community. The magnitude and diversity of contributors to the NNBF Guidelines have resulted in a robust resource that provides value beyond a single agency, sector, or nation. Similarly, the work of incorporating NNBF into projects will require us to strengthen our relationships across organizations, mandates, and missions to achieve resilient communities. I hope you are inspired by the collaborative achievement of the NNBF Guidelines and will draw from this resource to develop innovative solutions to current and future flood risk management challenges. There is a lot we can achieve together along the path of revolutionary infrastructure development.

Vera, Cesar Allan, Ma Lourdes Brusola-Vera, Maria Rosario Felizco, and Janice Ian Manlutac. Local Humanitarian Leadership: The View from Local Actors. Oxfam, May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2021.7574.

Full text
Abstract:
The global call for localization and locally led emergency response acknowledges the reality that the humanitarian system is currently organized around international actors. More than the limited access to direct funding, the core issue is the power imbalance between local and international actors. In the Philippines, national and local networks of humanitarian, faith-based, developmental organizations and private sector foundations have been conducting and leading small- and large-scale disaster responses for decades. However, the discourse and struggle for localization have grown in recent years due to the prominence and dominance of international humanitarian actors, especially during large-scale emergencies. Oxfam is one of several international organizations that have signed up to the Grand Bargain, Charter for Change and other agreements that push for localization, and Oxfam in the Philippines has embraced the local humanitarian leadership (LHL) approach holistically.

Smalley, Rebecca, Emmanuel Sulle, Ngala Chome, Ana Duarte, and Euclides Gonçalves. Agricultural Investment Corridors in Africa: Does Smallholder and Women's Participation Count? Institute of Development Studies (IDS), August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/apra.2021.021.

Full text
Abstract:
Agricultural development corridors and clusters are highly complex projects that have been driven in Africa by agribusiness and mining corporations, host governments, international donors and development finance institutions. There is interest in whether these projects can support inclusive agribusiness. Evidence shows that involvement of small-scale economic actors in such initiatives is often impeded by a failure to grant them participation or a voice. We therefore investigated if and how recent corridors and clusters in Africa have been able to achieve the meaningful engagement of small-scale economic actors, with a focus on smallholders, including pastoralists, and the women among them.
