During the inter-war period, quantification was added as an analytical tool. It tackles this question by investigating how lenders have thought about sovereigns for the past two centuries, focusing on the tools they have used to know and represent them. I argue that there was a critical shift in the early twentieth century in terms of the kinds of knowledge lenders deployed to know sovereigns. This shift differentiates the old sovereign lending from the new. In the old sovereign lending, merchant banking families such as the Ro

Abstract:
AbstractWhile much of the study and practice of international relations is anchored in the centuries-old tradition of realism, this chapter explores the important contributions that another theoretical tradition, liberalism, has made to the study of international security and the role of military power. Emerging from Enlightenment beliefs about the rationality of individuals and the potential for progress in human affairs, liberal theories and policy ideas have focused on offering alternative means for states seeking security, alternatives that might break the endless competition and warfare that realists see as inevitable in an anarchic world. Liberal theories emphasize how rules and institutions can help self-interested states achieve mutual interests, they see economic interdependence as a potent incentive for states to avoid war, and they argue that democracies enjoy more peaceful relations with other democracies. The chapter traces the history of liberal international relations theory as it matured in response to the mass violence and chaos of the twentieth century, and it examines a number of examples – like European integration, the post-World War II global economic order, and the control of nuclear weapons – to showcase how liberal ideas in practice might reduce the dangers of war and enhance the prospects for global cooperation.

Abstract:
This volume of Wight’s collected works brings together various writings concerning the political philosophy of international relations. Wight identified three traditions of thinking about international politics since the sixteenth century—Realism, Rationalism, and Revolutionism, which have become well known thanks to his 1991 posthumous volume, International Theory: The Three Traditions. The current volume includes several works on the same ‘international theory’ theme, some previously published and some never-before-published, with ‘Is There a Philosophy of Statesmanship?’ in the latter category. This volume also includes three essays by Wight on the causes and functions of war in international politics. Wight prepared several papers on legitimacy in domestic and international politics, and this volume features five never-before-published papers on this theme. Wight qualified his orderly analyses of traditions of political philosophy, the causes and functions of war, and principles of domestic and international legitimacy by drawing attention to unpredictable ‘wild card’ factors such as fortune and irony in his paper in this collection entitled ‘Fortune’s Banter’. Unintended, unexpected, and ironical consequences abound in international politics, despite efforts to master the dynamics of history. In view of the many factors behind events, including economic and demographic developments, Wight expressed qualifications about the role of ideas. He nonetheless concluded that ‘in historical retrospect, the philosophies of statesmen do seem observably to colour their policies’.

Taiwan (officially known as the Republic of China, ROC) as one of Asia’s Four Little Dragons (Wong, 2003) has gained economic strength by the end of the 20th century and became an important regional player. Its democratic achievements and economic prosperity have won recognition internationally (Mahbubani, 2011). Amidst the significant changes and reordering of economic powerhouses in terms of world geopolitics, academics and researchers have constantly made efforts to understand the main factors driving economic growth in countries the world over. As part of this process, Taiwan has also gained international attention and experts hope to learn from the Taiwan experience. Taiwan’s history in brief: mostly independent existence until the 15th century followed by episodic, periodic, and extended periods of rule by mainland Chinese dynasties, interrupted by the presence of Portuguese explorers, Spanish settlers, Dutch colonizers, and Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) until it reached its present status, and the country has been operating with a democratically elected government since 1996.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study. In the rapidly industrializing Hungary, the wood industry became an important economic branch in the country by the beginning of the 20th century, which also played a significant role in the country’s foreign trade. This industry was extremely important in the area I studied, as the forest cover along the Dráva was above the national average, and the quality of the forest stock also had an international reputation. In the last third of the 19th century, domestic and foreign demand for wood products increased, which was accompanied by an increase in the purchase prices of wood raw materials. Applied methods. I involved sources from monographies, employment and census records, and my own data from researches of archives. In my study I present the larger wood companies in the region, the results of the plants, the operation and extent of the industry, and their market relations. I also made a structural analysis examining the entrepreneur and its business together. Outcomes. During this period, the logistical and transportation possibilities of the region improved, as the railway lines – built almost completely until the war – networked the region. In addition to transport on the river, crossing opportunities also increased, so the raw material could reach a processing unit more and more quickly. In the age of dualism, a strong stratum of forest owners and entrepreneurs in the wood industry developed. Major wood industry enterprises were established mainly in the larger estates (Bellye, Dárda, Barcs, Berzence) or through citizenship in the territory of certain large municipalities. Outstanding among these was the Beliscian plant beyond the Dráva, which in two decades had become the largest timber company in Central Europe, employing thousands of people.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 tackles the question of whether these two troubled neighbours have ever been able to reach strategic bargains to allow peaceful coexistence. It re-visits the longer history of bilateral relations since 1400, the point in the modern era when there was a recognizably ‘Japanese’ state alongside its Chinese imperial counterpart. Befitting the evolving contexts of state formation, regional international society, and patterns of socio-economic exchange, there are four episodes that include mutual agreements about official relations between the two polities and regularized interactions between state and private actors from each side, as well as formal diplomatic accords or treaties. These episodes demonstrate that China and Japan were able to negotiate strategic bargains in very different historical contexts in their relatively long shared history. They are: (1) the establishment of official tributary relations at the beginning of the fifteenth century between the Ming dynasty and the Ashikaga Shogunate; (2) Tokugawa Ieyasu’s attempts to re-open relations with late-Ming China at the beginning of the seventeenth century (c. 1598–1616); (3) the semi-official revival of trade relations and regulations between the Qing dynasty and Tokugawa Japan between 1655 and 1800; and (4) the creation of modern, formal treaty relations between China, Japan, and Korea in the second half of the nineteenth century. It concludes by probing for continuities and disjunctures across the historical record from 1400 to 1900, asking what ‘lessons’ might be kept in mind, and what the significant socio-normative transformations have been in this strategic relationship.

Abstract:
Mexico and the United States share a long history of political, military, social, immigration, cultural and economic relations. Mexico has been among the three main trading partners of the US in recent decades, while the US has been the top trading partner of Mexico since statistics have been available. This chapter examines the “new triangular relationship” between the US, Mexico, and China, particularly from a Mexican perspective. With the global reemergence of China since the last decade of the 20th century, the relationship between Mexico and the US has substantially shifted in a variety of ways. The analysis first focuses on the general socioeconomic triangular relationship of Mexico with the US and China, based on a literature review; issues involving Chinese trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), are highlighted, as well as the overall relationship of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) with China. The next section discusses topics concerning this triangular relationship that are currently being analyzed in Mexico, particularly regarding China. The final part of the analysis concentrates on the main characteristics of this “new triangular relationship,” policy questions, and future research issues.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the relations between torture and immigration in the current context of crisis and rise of far right-wing parties in Latin America, particularly in Brazil. It considers the changes arising from the global economic crisis – which has been deeply hitting the region since 2012 – and from the hegemony of conservative political forces through a renewed alliance with the military power. These changes have direct repercussions on the immigration policies and legislation, as well as on the treatment of immigrants. Cases of xenophobia, violence and torture against immigrants and refugees from poor countries – especially when they are not white – are constantly registered. Torture is a practice with a long historical tradition in Latin American and was reinforced in the 20th century, during the military dictatorships; now, in this region it finds again a fertile ground to grow. Besides the analysis of the political and ideological-cultural environment characterized by a vindication of torture in Brazil, this chapter shows that the mass imprisonment system is a key-space for this practice, being the State its main protagonist. Immigrants, particularly African black women accused of acting as mulas for international drug trafficking, are increasingly exposed to systematic violations of human rights, including torture.

Since granted world heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1982, Old Havana has been the site of contested heritage practices. Critics consider UNESCO’s definition of the 143 hectare walled city center a discriminatory delineation strategy that primes the colonial core for tourist consumption at the expense of other parts of the city. To neatly bound Havana’s collective memory/history within its “old” core, they say, is to museumize the city as ”frozen in time,” sharply distinguishing the “historic” from the “vernacular.”While many

When analyzing the state of Latin American cities, particularly large ones like Buenos Aires, São Paolo and Riode Janeiro, scholars of urbanism and sociology often lean heavily on the term “fragmentation.” Through the 1980s and 1990s, the term was quickly and widely adopted to describe the widespread state of abutment between seemingly disparate urban conditions that purportedly prevented Latin American cities from developing into cohesive wholes and instead produced cities in pieces, fragments. This term, “fragmentation,” along with the idea of a city composed of mismatching parts, was centra

In modern international relations, the emphasis of dominance is beginning to shift more and more from the Western part of the political map of the world to the East. Countries that were previously in colonial dependence on the West (China, India) are beginning to challenge international leadership. Against this background, at the beginning of the XXI century, the concept of Greater Eurasia began to take shape and gradually develop, as a desire to acquire subjectivity and an attempt to establish a new hierarchy of geopolitical leadership. Geopolitical geometry plays an important role in the ana

Abstract:
Over the span of the 20th century, the global demand for metals and minerals has increased dramatically. This is associated with a general trend of declining ore grades from most commodities, meaning higher quantities of ore needed to be processed and thus more energy. Hence, quantifying the loss of mineral capital in terms of mass is not enough since it does not take into account the quality of the minerals in the mine. Exergy is a better indicator than mass because it measures at the same time the three features that describe any natural resource: quantity, composition and a particular conce
