While the prevalence of falls among Malaysian older adults is comparable to other older populations around the world, little is currently known about fear of falling in Malaysia. The Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I) and short FES-I scales to measure fear of falling have not yet been validated for use within the Malaysian population, and are currently not available in Bahasa Malaysia (BM). A total of 402 participants aged ≥63 years were recruited. The questionnaire was readministered to 149 participants, 4 to 8 weeks after the first administration to determine test–retest reliability.

Abstract Background Falls are common in community dwelling older people, and gait and balance abnormalities (GABAb) are a key modifiable risk factor, through strength and balance training. In addition, there is a strong relationship between fear of falling (FoF) and GABAb , though Falls Efficacy Scale-International version (FES-I) scores have never been examined in this context. Our aim was to determine whether FoF, as measured by the FES-I, is associated with GABAb, as determined by commonly used gait and balance tests. Abstract This book chapter focuses on a programme on improving human health through livestock research in three areas: (i) animal-source foods for nutrition; (ii) zoonoses (diseases transmitted between animals and people); and (iii) FBD. This was the first CGIAR group with an explicit food safety mandate (rather than focusing on specific hazards) and with expertise in using research methods for food safety rather than diseases in general. ILRI was also one of the first groups to focus on food safety in the 'informal markets' of developing countries, and by the 2010s, had become the lead research institute globally in this emerging area. ILRI research on FBD has resulted in many science outputs, including some genuinely innovative tools and approaches, and has already demonstrated outcomes at community, national and regional levels. These include substantial inputs into global, regional and national strategies and national training programmes. The major development-oriented approach - the triple-path for training, motivating and enabling of informal market agents - has been shown to be both scalable and sustainable. While questions remain about its lasting effects on food safety and its application outside those few countries where its success has been demonstrated, the next few years should bring further evidence about this, with benefits lasting for many decades to come.

Management actions for Northern Snakehead are currently limited to regulating possession, educating anglers, and encouraging harvest. In this paper, I examine ethical questions to guide future decisions and argue for ethical pragmatism and participatory management, which recognize stakeholder values, aim to reduce defensiveness, increases listening, and consciously cultivates a ground of mutual respect and trust among stakeholders, scientists, and managers.

Under the ICDR Rules, the case Administrator at the ICDR takes the lead in ensuring that fee rates are agreed between all tribunal members and the parties. Those fees are almost always based on the arbitrators’ previously advised hourly rates, although the Administrator may intervene to modify rates to avoid any significant disparity. Similarly, although not formally required under the rules, throughout the arbitration and in the final costs of arbitration, the Administrator reviews the reasonableness of the arbitrators’ fees and expenses. In contrast to the equivalent provision in the AAA Commercial Rules, section R-55, the ICDR Rules envisage a more hands-on role to be played by the institution.

The broad interdisciplinarity of my science and my worldview are direct products of my career spent in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program. I attribute the holistic systems approaches that I use in my teaching and mentoring to my career spent in the LTER program. I am able to converse with a broad array of collaborators and practitioners because of my career spent in the LTER program. My career is rich with interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships thanks to the LTER program. My life is rich with friends that I have met throughout my career spent in the LTER program. There are probably few mid-career scientists who have spent virtually all of their careers associated with the LTER network. As one of these few, I view this as a tremendous asset. My experiences in the LTER program began in 1983 with the North Inlet Program (NIN), where my master’s research, advised by the late Hank McKellar, involved modeling salt marsh ecosystem dynamics. After completing my PhD at Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1989, I returned to the NIN for a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship with Fred Sklar at the Baruch Marine Laboratory. I worked with Fred on another of his National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, but there was considerable overlap between that research and the work being done at NIN. When the NSF released a solicitation for new coastal LTER sites in 1998, I was an assistant professor at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. We gathered a core group of Everglades colleagues and answered this solicitation with a proposal to study coastal ecosystem dynamics in the Florida Everglades. Our proposal was successful, and by early 2000 the new Florida Coastal Everglades LTER program (FCE) was off and running. I directed FCE from its inception until I left FIU in 2008 for Arizona State University (ASU). On arriving at ASU in 2008, I immediately became involved with the Central Arizona–Phoenix (CAP) LTER program. I was excited about my move to ASU and the new School of Sustainability because I felt as if it were a rare mid-career opportunity to change the trajectory of, and perhaps even the impact of, my career.

Abstract:
As part of my long-term ecological research experience, I have come to recognize that individual success is not necessarily the hallmark of an effective or successful scientist. To achieve problem-oriented solutions to the grand challenges of society, service and collaboration can have more impact on ecology and society than singular scientific achievements. Because of my experiences with the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program, I promote the idea that collaborative research is essential training for ecosystem scientists. The LTER program promoted the increasing importance of effective science communication at a time when it was not widely appreciated. The LTER program demonstrated to me that engendering a spirit of collaboration was the key to building a network of scientists that could address grand challenge questions. After studying anthropology as an undergraduate in Louisiana, I moved to Florida to work with Daniel Childers in the field of ecology. During my PhD work with him at Florida International University (FIU), I became involved in the Florida Coastal Everglades site (FCE) of the LTER program. During graduate school, I participated as cochair of the LTER graduate student committee. Currently, I am a research assistant professor with appointments at the Southeast Environmental Research Center and the Department of Biological Sciences at FIU. My research focuses on long-term ecosystem responses to hydrologic restoration, carbon cycling, and plant–soil interactions along environmental gradients in the Everglades. I collaborate with researchers at FCE and other LTER sites, as well as with colleagues in the International LTER (ILTER) to broaden the scope and integration of site-based, long-term research. Ecosystem approaches are a hallmark of science in the LTER program, and long-term manipulations at the ecosystem-scale are numerous within the LTER network. Simple ecosystem modeling allows for the integration of responses into a few synthetic variables (e.g., soil nutrient concentrations or carbon accumulation rates). My research in the LTER program strives to identify data gaps posed by such modeling and looks for creative and robust ways to develop data sets that contain a comprehensive suite of input parameters.

Abstract:
Back when scam artists sent snail-mail instead of e-mail, I received a letter that began “Dear friend,” a clear sign it was from someone trying to sell me something. Nonetheless, I read a bit more and saw this line highlighted in yellow: “IMAGINE turning $1,000 into $34,500 in less than one year!” Real friends don’t highlight their sentences, but I pushed on, thinking I might share this BS with my students. Sure enough, it was a con. The letter said that “no special background or education” was needed and that, “It’s an investment you can make with spare cash that you might ordinarily spend on lottery tickets or the race track.”Now I wasn’t sure that I wanted to share this letter, lest my students wonder where this company had gotten my name. I don’t buy lottery tickets or bet on horses. What had I done that made this company think I was a sucker? The letter claimed that, instead of wasting my money on lottery tickets and horse races, I could get rich buying low-priced stocks. For example, the price of LKA International had jumped from 2 cents a share to 69 cents a share in a few months, which would have turned $1,000 into $34,500. All I had to do was pay $39 for a special report that would give me access to “the carefully guarded territory of a few shrewd ‘inner circle’ investors.” The entire premise is ridiculous. If someone really knew how to turn $1,000 into $34,500, they would be doing it, instead of selling special reports for $39. Yet, we repeatedly fall for such scams because we are hard-wired to think that the world is governed by regular laws that we can discover and exploit. Stock prices cannot be random. There must be underlying patterns, like night and day, winter and summer. Our gullibility is aided and abetted by our greed—by the notion that it is easier to make money by buying and selling stocks than by being a butcher, baker, or candlestick maker. The inconvenient truth is that zigs and zags in stock prices are mostly random, yet transitory patterns can be found in random numbers. If we look for them, we will find them and be fooled by them.

Abstract:
This chapter details how, from the end of the World War I until the end of the silent era in 1927 (and beyond), Hollywood dominated the international film industry. The Hollywood studios reached their peak, both in their organisation and efficiency, and in the sheer quality of their product. But this quality was fed from both within and without. Part of the response to Hollywood dominance was for other film industries to develop and exploit their own distinctive features, ranging from English idiosyncrasy, through art films in Germany and France, to complete contradiction in the Soviet Union. The chapter discusses those cinemas which were part of an international industry dominated by commerce. Of the other European industries, the country with most material available on DVD is Germany, in particular the expressionist cinema. This has the advantage that the influence of its conventions can still be seen clearly in modern horror, one reason being the long shelf life of Nosferatu (1922), directed by F. W. Murnau.

Ho, Benjamin Tze Ern. "Chinese Political Worldview." In China’s Political Worldview and Chinese Exceptionalism. Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463725149_ch02.

Abstract:
The chapter examines “Chinese ways” of thinking about international relations, including how traditional Chinese ideas are accounted for and incorporated into mainstream IR scholarship. It argues that the study of Chinese IR should be viewed within the larger framework of a Chinese self-identity that is perceived as in tension with Western conceptions of the self, society, and statehood. Specifically, I compare the ideas put forth by four Chinese scholars with a few mainstream IR theories (realism, liberalism, and constructivism) and evaluate the extent to which the theories proposed by Chinese scholars can be considered unique and/or better than existing IR theories in terms of their ability to explain certain aspects of Chinese political life.
