Abstract:
Saudi Vision 2030 aims to improve Saudi Arabia’s ranking on the Global Competitiveness Index from 25 in 2015–2016 to within the top 10 by 2030. It also strives to increase the share of non-oil exports in non-oil GDP from 16% in 2016 to 50% by 2030. To achieve these goals, decision-making process should be better informed about the driving forces of Saudi Arabia’s competitiveness. To this end, we consider the real effective exchange rate (REER) as a measure of external price competitiveness, as it captures domestic and global changes in prices.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Economic Research Service (ERS) International Macroeconomic Data Set provides historical and 10-year projected macroeconomic variables for 181 countries, as well as regional and income groupings, which account for more than 99 percent of the world economy. The main macroeconomic variables include the real Gross Domestic Product (real GDP), Consumer Price Index (CPI), exchange rates, and population. These indicators are the benchmark for the annual USDA Baseline agricultural supply and demand projections, providing a 10-year outlook on U.S. and global

The coronavirus pandemic has swept across a world unprepared to fight it, because countries had failed to choose policies to fight inequality. Only one in six countries assessed for the CRI Index 2020 were spending enough on health, only a third of the global workforce had adequate social protection, and in more than 100 countries at least one in three workers had no labour protection such as sick pay. As a result, many have faced death and destitution, and inequality is increasing dramatically. This third edition of the CRI Index report recommends that all governments adopt strong anti-inequa

Global financial shocks under a revamped global financial landscape can produce unexpected, multi-faceted, and disruptive implications for emerging market economies. Using the VIX index as a proxy for global financial stress, we argue that Southern Cone macro conditions can undergo significant pressure under adverse global financial shocks. The region needs to start rebuilding macro buffers now -in addition to simultaneously correcting macro imbalances and enhancing policy frameworks- to cope with the emerging global financial environment. The fight against corruption is necessary and indispensable in several countries. Corruption has become so serious that we even have an index of corruption perceptions in each country (Corruption Perceptions Index), promoted by Transparency International (Alfaro, 2022a). When reviewing the legislation and the various actions of the different governments, it can be seen that these laws, regulations or actions are mainly reactive; that is, they mainly seek to establish sanctions after the damage has already occurred for each country or for the world in general and are not focused on prevention s

Is inflation (still) a global phenomenon? We study the international co-movement of inflation based on a dynamic factor model and in a sample spanning up to 56 countries during the 1960-2023 period. Over the entire period, a first global factor explains approximately 58% of the variation in headline inflation across all countries and over 72% in OECD economies. The explanatory power of global inflation is equally high in a shorter sample spanning the time since 2000. Core inflation is also remarkably global, with 53% of its variation attributable to a first global factor. The explanatory power

Abstract:
The use of the term "Global South" in various disciplines lacks a clear and consistent definition, leading to concerns about its homogenizing and historically colonial connotations. The concept is often associated with socio-economic marginality and multilateral alliances among countries with similar Human Development Index (HDI) rankings. We describe ourselves as a "Global South organization" with a focus on context-based research. However, we grapple with challenges arising from being rooted in societies that are Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD), while striving

Global migration has been increasing since the 1990s. People are forced to leave their homes in search of safety, a better livelihood, or for more economic opportunities. Environmental drivers of migration, such as land degradation, water pollution, or changing climate, are acting as stronger phenomena with time. As millions of people are exposed to multiple water crises, daily needs related to water quality, lack of provisioning, excess or shortage of water become vital for survival as well for livelihood support. In turn, the crisis can transform into conflict and act as a trigger for migrat

A near-global framework for automated training data generation and land cover classification using shallow machine learning with low-density time series imagery does not exist. This study presents a methodology to map nine-class, six-class, and five-class land cover using two dates of a Sentinel-2 granule across seven international sites. The approach uses a series of spectral, textural, and distance decision functions combined with modified ancillary layers to create binary masks from which to generate a balanced set of training data applied to a random forest classifier.
