Abstract:
I’m especially pleased to send you my congratulations on the publication of “International Journal of Automation Technology”. The automation technology has the extremely clear purpose of replacing human work with automated system. However, the automation technology requires various kinds of technologies, ranging from mechanical technology, electronics, control technology, software technology for computer, to system technology necessary for those to be functioned effectively. Therefore, people, who start to learn the automation technology or keep up on it, cannot help gathering fragmentary information from many kinds of technology fields. Additionally, relationship and collaboration between academic institute and industries are important issues that mean industrial firms investigate mostly practical applications of automated machines and production systems, while mainly universities and institutes research fundamental and elemental technologies. With these backgrounds, it has been tough to grasp its whole picture of the automation technology in general, although some of leading universities, institutes and industry firms themselves advance and accumulate the automation technology systematically. This time, through publishing “International Journal of Automation Technology”, I believe the automation technology must become popular and familiar for a great number of engineers, researchers and students. Especially, this publication is delightful news for young engineers, who work toward advanced automation in global business. I greatly expect this journal play a roll of network among engineers and researchers working on the automation in various technology fields, to help upskilling and stimulation for them, and to contribute the development of the automation technology itself as well.

Abstract:
As the world embraces a technological revolution on how everyday devices are connected to the internet, users provide sensitive information using the internet which is broken down and distributed as packets throughout the network. Packet sniffers tap to these packets, capable of potentially compromising security and privacy of unsuspecting users. This study aims to put into the test some well-known Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and observe how they fare against popular packet-sniffing tools such as Wireshark and tcpdump. The varied sniffing methods and techniques from various sniffing tools will provide an evaluation of performance of the intrusion detection systems.[1] Ansari, S., Rajeev, S. & Chandrashekar, H. Zhang, Mingyu. "Client-Vendor Collaboration in Information Technology Development Projects And Its Emerging Outcomes." FIU Digital Commons, 2017. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3479.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the key dimensions of IT project collaboration and its outcomes. We conceptualized key dimensions of client-vendor collaboration, and its emerging outcomes based on literature reviews. Then, we proposed a new research framework that links IT development processes to IT project client-vendor collaboration which in turn affects the outcomes of IT project. We examined the key dimensions of IT project collaboration and their impacts on project outcomes. We identified four critical IT development processes and technologies that contribute to the development of project collaboration. Our results include: (1) Coordination practices and technologies (such as communication quality and coordination technology) significantly influence the effectiveness of IT development.; (2) IT project collaboration can be conceptualized as consisting of two related but distinct constructs: cooperation structure and joint development; (3) IT development processes jointly influence the formation and the development of IT project collaboration. We also found that knowledge-sharing activities significantly improve the usage level of the iterative requirement generation process. (4) Different collaboration behaviors as indicated by IT project collaboration constructs affect two types of outcomes: project performance outcomes and emerging outcomes. IT project collaboration significantly improve both the emerging outcomes (such as team cultivation and relational outcomes) and performance outcomes (time, schedule and functionality). (5) Trust fully mediates the effect of cooperation structure on performance outcomes; suggesting that common rules and structures cannot directly benefit project performance without members’ believing in those rules and agreements. Through IT project collaboration, IT vendors can achieve not only traditional project outcomes but also emerging outcomes such as team cultivation and client-vendor relationship building. The relationships among IT development processes and technologies, project collaboration, and the outcomes of project collaboration are much more complex and dynamic than what the extant literature has portrayed. Multiple factors jointly influence the processes of IT development. Different patterns of client-vendor collaboration also affect the outcomes of the project, in addition, the trust level between the vendor and the client plays a major role in mediating the relationship between client-vendor collaboration and project performance.

Memarian, Negar. "A Novel Access Technology Based on Infrared Thermography for People with Severe Motor Impairments." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/26299.

Full text
Abstract:
Many individuals with severe motor impairments are cognitively capable, but because of their physical impairments, unable to express their intention through conventional means of communication. Access technologies are devices that attempt to translate the intention of these individuals into functional activity by harnessing their residual physical or physiological abilities. The primary objective of this thesis was to design and develop a novel non-invasive and non-contact access technology based on infrared thermal imaging. This access technology translates the local temperature change associated with voluntary mouth opening to activation of a binary switch such as a mouse click or key press. To this end, an algorithm based on motion and temperature analyses, and morphological and anthropometric filters was designed to detect mouth opening activity in thermal video in real-time. The secondary objective of this thesis was to introduce a mutual information measure for objective assessment of binary switch users’ performance. A model was suggested, in which combination of cognitive and physical abilities of the human user of a binary access switch constitute a communication channel. The proposed mutual information measure estimates the rate of information transmission in the ‘human communication channel’ during stimulus response tasks. Using this measure, in a study with ten able-bodied participants, the infrared thermal switch was validated against a conventional chin switch. Impairments in body functions and structures that may contraindicate the use of the infrared thermal switch were explored in a study with seven clients, with severe disabilities. Potential hard and soft technological solutions to mitigate the effect of these impairments on infrared thermal switch use were recommended. Finally the infrared thermal switch was tailored to meet the needs of a young man with severe spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, who had no other means of physical access.

Abstract:
Buton Island is one of the largest Islamic Sultanate territories in Indonesia. One of the remains of the Buton Sultanate is the Grand Mosque of the Buton Sultanate (TGMOTSOB). TGMOTSOB was founded in 1537 and 1929 and renovated by the 37th Sultan of Buton. Over time TGMOTSOB has experienced changes in the appearance of the building. Changes in form in architecture fall within the scope of synchronic and diachronic. Changes in architecture and morphology correlate synchronically and diachronically. This correlation is important to explore to explain changes in ideas and meanings in the history of the building. This systematic review aims to: 1) gain a deeper understanding of the architectural morphology at TGMOTSOB; and 2) This systematic review can identify the instruments used to measure TGMOTSOB architectural morphology. This research concludes that TGMOTSOB can be studied by architectural morphology with building materials, building color, and changes in building shape based on factors of need and demand, technology, and political needs. Keywords: Changes in building shape, building materials, building colour.

Abstract:
Since the late 1970’s, computer-aided process planning (CAPP) has attracted a large amount of research interest, which has led to a huge volume of literature published on this subject. The literature encompasses both reviews and research articles. The review articles are mostly technologically oriented. This paper takes a different angle to look back the CAPP research, that is, a statistic approach. The paper analyses the journals that have been publishing CAPP research works. The concept of “Subject Strength” of a journal is introduced and used to gauge the level of focus of a journal on a particular research subject/domain, i.e. CAPP. Discussions about the recent CAPP research works are presented in different categories as they fall in. The term “Technology Impact Factor (TIF)” is introduced to assess the level of impact of a particular technology, in terms of citation counts. All discussions and analyses are carried out based on the data gathered from the Elsevier’s Scopus abstract and citation database. Finally, a discussion on the future development is presented. The literature suggests that this is the only review article of the similar nature in the first decade of the century.

Abstract:
Several years ago an effort was undertaken at MIT to develop high-speed rotating MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) using computer chip fabrication technology. To enable high-power density the micro-turbomachinery must be run at tip speeds of order 500 m/s, comparable to conventional scale turbomachinery. The high rotating speeds (of order 2 million rpm), the relatively low bearing aspect ratios (L/D < 0.1) due to fabrication constraints, and the laminar flow regime in the bearing gap place the micro-bearing designs to an exotic spot in the design space for hydrostatic gas bearings. This paper presents a new analytical model for axially fed gas journal bearings and reports the experimental testing of micro gas bearings to characterize and to investigate their rotordynamic behavior. The analytical model is capable of dealing with all the elements of, (1) micro-devices, (2) dynamic response characteristics of hydrostatic gas bearings, (3) evaluation of stiffness, natural frequency and damping, (4) evaluation of instability boundaries, and (5) evaluation of effects of imbalance and bearing anisotropy. First, a newly developed analytical model for hydrostatic gas journal bearings is introduced. The model consists of two parts, a fluid dynamic model for axially fed gas journal bearings and a rotordynamic model for micro-devices. Next, the model is used to predict the natural frequency, damping ratio and the instability boundary for the test devices. Experiments are conducted using a high-resolution fiber optic sensor to measure rotor speed, and a data reduction scheme is implemented to obtain imbalance-driven whirl response curves. The model predictions are validated against experimental data and show good agreement with the measured natural frequencies and damping ratios. Last, the new model is successfully used to establish bearing operating protocols and guidelines for high-speed operation.

Abstract:
Though face to face class interaction is still a dominant-teaching approach in most higher education institutes, online teaching has become increasingly popular with the development of internet technology [1,3]. The authors have used instructional technology and computer software to develop web-based lectures in a mechanical engineering program for online delivery at their institution. This paper highlights how computer software Camtasia Studio and Windows Journal have been integrated with a Gateway tablet PC, a webcam and wireless speaking receiver device to produce web-based lectures for online delivery. The paper intends to share experiences, myths, and lessons that the authors have learned during production of audio and video online course materials. Integration of instructional technology with computer software has made online course preparation and production much more effective and efficient. The paper also summarizes the steps taken by the authors to accomplish this instructional project from start to finish. It includes integration of instructional technology, pedagogical concepts, development of audio and video materials, difficulties faced and how they were handled, software used, and existing issues for the future work.
