Abstract:
This chapter analyses the status of India’s social science research (SSR) publications in global context. The outputs chosen to assess India’s comparative performance is the articles written and published by Indians in the field of social sciences either individually or in collaboration with researchers outside India. The study analysed journal articles published during 2008–14 drawn from Scopus database to examine the publication status of India in social sciences in an international context. The study found that the six-year period, 2009–14, India consistently ranks among the top 15 countries in the world. Discipline-wise analysis shows that the share of pure social science articles was significant but is declining. Of the total 30938 articles, 28 per cent are published with international collaboration. The USA and the UK contribute 52 per cent of total international collaborations.

Abstract:
Italy's economic growth over its 150 years of unified history did not occur at a steady pace, nor was it balanced across sectors. Relying on an entirely new input (labor and capital) database, this chapter evaluates the different labor productivity growth trends within the Italian economy's sectors, as well as the contribution of structural change to productivity growth. Italy's performance is then set in an international context: a comparison of sectoral labor productivity growth rates and levels within a selected sample of countries (United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Japan, India) allows us to better time, quantify, and gauge the causes of Italy's catching-up process and subsequent more recent slowdown. Finally, the paper analyzes the proximate sources of Italy's growth, relative to the other countries, in a standard growth accounting framework, in an attempt also to disentangle the contribution of both total factor productivity growth and capital deepening to the country's labor productivity dynamics.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews prominent theories of ‘performance’ and ‘performativity’ and compares them to theories of ritual. It begins with important theories of performativity in language, and moves on to discussions of the relation between performativity in theatre and in ritual. This chapter argues shows how a focus on performativity in religion and ritual emphasizes embodiment over cognition, situated communication over linguistic structure, and contextual meaning over propositional content. This chapter considers the example of Indian popular theatre and its relation to Indian theology. It also reviews important theories of performativity associated with Austin, Goffman, Schechner, Tambiah, and Turner, arguing that a performative approach to religion and ritual sees them as emergent, contingent, creative, dynamic, embodied, open-ended, and above all context-dependent.

Abstract:
This article focuses on performance measures. It starts with the usual focus on profitability and market value as performance measures, followed by alternative performance measures based on firm productivity, growth and survival. It then discusses issues on survey data, and the problem of ex post reasoning in empirical work. There are several important themes in this discussion. First, it discusses the definitional and variable construction issues. Second, it addresses the analytical contents in these variables as performance measures. Third, it highlights the statistical and empirical difficulties in using these performance measures, especially in an international cross-country context.

Abstract:
After the Waldock Report, OUP began a process of gradual modernization that resulted in changes to its systems of business administration and corporate structure. Manufacturing and in-house printing became less profitable and were eventually discontinued, and emphasis shifted to product marketing, international business, and corporate management. The Press maintained throughout this change its traditional learned values in academic and trade publishing and the Delegates continued to play a significant role in decision-making. By the 1990s OUP had reinvented itself as a modern publishing enterprise and was able to exploit new opportunities in digital publishing and the global book trade. The chapter considers in detail the process of modernization through an analysis of business structure, annual surpluses, and book sales, and the contribution of key individuals, while placing OUP in the context of the wider UK and international publishing world.

Abstract:
This book takes on a fundamental political puzzle: most states in the international system are “weak” states—states unable to monopolize violence or provide public goods, and yet the nation-state remains the primary organizational form for world politics. In addressing this puzzle, the book shows why states everywhere face popular dissatisfaction with their performance and why addressing this dissatisfaction—through institutional alternatives to the state like the European Union, or through higher taxation—is so difficult. Bringing together international relations and historical sociology, it constructs a provocative theory of state formation. It specifies the conditions under which citizens are willing to disarm and pay the high level of taxes that exemplify European-style “strong” states. It then shows that these conditions—namely, costly war and empire—could not be repeated beyond a certain level of destruction. Through a global history that covers two centuries, the book shows how the violence of European state formation shaped the development of polities worldwide. In doing so, it puts contemporary phenomena like neoliberal reforms, long-running civil wars, and human rights activism into historical context, concluding with a discussion of foreign policy in a world where weak states are the norm.

Full text
Abstract:
Indian Film Stars offers original insights and important reappraisals of film stardom in India from the early talkie era of the 1930s to the contemporary period of global blockbusters. The collection represents a substantial intervention to our understanding of the development of film star cultures in India during the 20th and 21st centuries. The contributors seek to inspire and inform further inquiries into the histories of film stardom—the industrial construction and promotion of star personalities, the actual labouring and imagined lifestyles of professional stars, the stars’ relationship to specific aesthetic cinematic conventions (such as frontality and song-dance) and production technologies (such as the play-back system and post-synchronization), and audiences’ investment in and devotion to specific star bodies—across the country’s multiple centres of film production and across the overlapping (and increasingly international) zones of the films’ distribution and reception. The star images, star bodies and star careers discussed are examined in relation to a wide range of issues, including the negotiation and contestation of tradition and modernity, the embodiment and articulation of both Indian and non-Indian values and vogues; the representation of gender and sexuality, of race and ethnicity, and of cosmopolitan mobility and transnational migration; innovations and conventions in performance style; the construction and transformation of public persona; the star’s association with film studios and the mainstream media; the star’s relationship with historical, political and cultural change and memory; and the star’s meaning and value for specific (including marginalised) sectors of the audience.

Abstract:
Abstract The establishment of mass media organizations in India is contemporaneous with that of its counterparts in the developed world. Indian Media Giants: Unveiling the Business Dynamics of Print Legacies is an analytical chronicle of six Indian mega media conglomerates' individual odyssey from their humble, incipient beginnings in the pre-independence era to their transformation into powerful business empires in the digitised world. The book traces Indian Media metamorphosis, the birth, phase-wise contours of growth and development, travails and trajectories, organizational structures, editorial policies and business dynamics of print majors in India, namely, The Times Group, The Hindu Group, The Hindustan Times Limited, The Indian Express Group, Dainik Jagran Limited and DB Corp Limited. It unravels their understanding of the values of co-dependence, collaboration, and competition with their contemporaries. It is an untold story of how these organizations leapt over the perimeters of conventional greatness to achieve unmeasured success that spans the globe. The book analyses how innovations have been brought in the management policies of these print businesses, with respect to production, distribution, consumption, while accrediting the visionary leadership that drives each organisation forward in its endeavours. What the case studies also details, is the wide extent of strategic intent enunciation; the role of product lines, development and diversification into radio, TV, digital and other segments; geographical spread, expansion, regional penetration and international footprint; the role of technological advancements in throwing up unimaginably new business opportunities; strategic alliances, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and takeovers; manpower management policies; CSR activities and financial performance of these media giants. The theoretical implications of the growth of media organisations in terms of the nature of mass media and its products are also underlined. The book focuses on the theoretical framework of media management and pays attention on the changing media management practices from one era to another, gradually orienting and re-orienting the strategic positioning of respective media giants to the pulse of the media market and the opportunities under various regulatory regimes. It is replete with the meticulous analysis of the editorial values and business dynamics upon which their legacies are founded, changing business models adopted by the media moguls, the ripples they have created in the media world and how they are constantly being modified to suit the tastes of the modernising market. With this, and more, Indian Media Giants is a holistic compendium that offers multiple perspectives on how print media organizations in India have grown from strength to strength and have become platform agnostic. The book also details the changing media landscape in India and also underlines the efforts of media giants in retaining print while embracing the digital. The book will be of immense value to the academic fraternity and industry professionals to gain an incisive as well as panoptic view and understanding of the Indian media conglomerates. Compressed in these pages is the analytical story of the past, present and future of the Indian print legacies for the pleasure and curiosity of the readers.

Abstract:
This commentary analyses Article 7.3.4 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) concerning adequate assurance of due performance. Like Art 7.3.3, Art 7.3.4 relates to cases of ‘anticipatory breach’. In that context, Art 7.3.4 provides remedies for those cases which do not reach the high standard of probability required for the right to terminate under Art 7.3.3. Under Art 7.3.4, a party who reasonably believes that there will be a fundamental non-performance by the other party may demand adequate assurance of due performance and may meanwhile withhold its own performance. Where this assurance is not provided within a reasonable time, the party demanding it may resort to termination. This commentary discusses the requirements and consequences of adequate assurance of performance and the right to withhold own performance.

Abstract:
New York City has long been a generative nexus for the transnational Latin music scene. Currently, there is no other place in the Americas where such large numbers of people from throughout the Caribbean come together to make music. This book seeks to recognize all of those musicians under one mighty musical sound, especially those who have historically gone unnoticed. Based on archival research, oral histories, interviews, and musicological analysis, the book examines how interethnic collaboration among musicians, composers, dancers, instrument builders, and music teachers in New York City set a standard for the study, creation, performance, and innovation of Latin music. Musicians specializing in Spanish Caribbean music in New York cultivated a sound that was grounded in tradition, including classical, jazz, and Spanish Caribbean folkloric music. The book studies this sound in detail and in its context. It offers a fresh understanding of how musicians made and formally transmitted Spanish Caribbean popular music in New York City from 1940 to 1990. Without diminishing the historical facts of segregation and racism the musicians experienced, the book treats music as a unifying force. By giving recognition to those musicians who helped bridge the gap between cultural and musical backgrounds, it recognizes the impact of entire ethnic groups who helped change music in New York. The study of these individual musicians through interviews and musical transcriptions helps to characterize the specific and identifiable New York City Latin music aesthetic that has come to be emulated internationally.

Abstract:
Section 6.2 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) deals with the concept of hardship. While hardship clauses are encountered with some frequency in international commercial contracts, few legal systems recognize a legal doctrine termed ‘hardship’. The innovative nature of Section 6.2 can be perceived by contrast with Art 79(1) of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). A discussion of Art 79 CISG, entitled ‘exemption’, leads on to a consideration of the relationship between force majeure and hardship. Hardship is most likely to be invoked in the context of long-term contracts where it is difficult, if not impossible, for the parties to make provision for every event that may have an impact on their contractual obligations.

Lopotenco, Viorica. DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL ARCHITECTURE AT THE NATIONAL FINANCIAL SYSTEMS LEVEL. RS Global S. z O.O., 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31435/rsglobal/027.

Full text
Abstract:
The fundamental purpose of this paper is to analyze the transformations in the international financial architecture and their impact on the national financial system. The analysis of the international financial architecture's functioning mechanism suggests its similarity with the software system structure. It is static in the way the system functionality is decomposed and divided into implementation teams. The efficiency of international financial architecture's functioning depends mainly on how balanced and interconnected its elements are. Thus, according to systems theory, only by overcoming the deformation of the international financial architecture at all its levels, it is possible to increase the financial system's overall performance. In this regard, maintaining a dynamic balance in the development of the international financial architecture as an integral unit of its structural elements and functions is becoming of urgent importance. This aspect of the research allows the creation of an instrumental and methodological basis for forecasting the directions for further developing the international financial architecture in the context of the globalization of the world economy at the national financial systems level. This study concludes that the complex solution of the international financial architecture challenges involves creating the foundations for implementing progressive structural changes in the economy and contributing to sustainable economic development.

Abstract:
After experiencing slow growth for much of the post-Independence period, the Indian economy has experienced powerful changes of significant magnitude since the mid-1980s. Post-reform India has defied established economic patterns and, in the process, created a few paradoxes. In this concise edition of The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy in the 21st Century, select chapters from the original have been compiled to give students of economics a brief but comprehensive overview of the Indian economy, contributing to a finer understanding of India’s growth path. In discussing these issues, this concise handbook adopts a context-rich, research-based, non-ideological approach; provides a comprehensive yet forward-looking coverage of economic issues; includes political and social aspects and draws on policymaker and market-participant perspectives; brings to the fore the various aspects of India’s performance that now attract global attention; and debates the relative importance of external factors compared to domestic reforms.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of social and environmental performance and management practices in the oil and gas industries, outlining the evolution of international companies’ approaches over the last twenty years within the wider extractive industries context. The chapter reviews what social and environmental management amongst such companies means in practice, and highlights some of the unresolved issues emerging. While most companies now model their approach to social and environmental management on international norms, they face a variety of drivers to their practices. These range from complying with international standards in order to gain access to finance, to complying with new host country legislation and regulation, and gaining and maintaining a good reputation and a ‘social licence to operate’. This chapter argues that the complexity of these drivers problematizes the portrayal of the industry’s social and environmental performance as ‘voluntary’ corporate social responsibility, and renders the latter term somewhat misleading.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews India’s foreign policy on climate change, arguing that while it is marked by tactical virtuosity, it increasingly exhibits strategic vacuity. The chapter traces the evolution of India’s role in international climate negotiations, noting particularly India’s key role in highlighting equity and enshrining the concept of ‘common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities’ as a cornerstone of the negotiation process. The chapter then examines the turbulent phase from 2007 onwards, when India, along with other large developing country allies, experimented with new articulations of climate policy. This discussion explores the emergent drivers of Indian climate policy, including international pressures, shifting domestic political context, the emergence of ‘co-benefits’ as a framing concept, and the role of key personalities. The chapter concludes by suggesting that an exclusive emphasis on an equitable climate deal should transition to an approach that provides equal attention to equity and effectiveness in international climate outcomes.

Abstract:
Conflict of laws, or private international law, is an increasingly important subject of study due to increasing movement and relocation of large number of people from one jurisdiction to another for personal and professional reasons. This book is a detailed and up-to-date study of conflict of laws and focuses on its three main areas: the law of obligations, law of property, and law of persons. It provides fresh perspectives on the subject and analyses its significance in the dynamic contemporary world. The work not only lucidly examines the inter-territorial conflicts but also lays a special emphasis on inter-personal disputes in the Indian context. It evaluates the role of various international instruments and conventions including The Hague Convention on private international law designed to resolve international conflicts. The book also discusses critical issues such as habitual residence, domicile, and obligations for shaping foreign contracts and torts. This revised edition elaborates on the recent developments in two areas of the subject, namely Muslim law and the law relating to guardianship.
