Abstract:
Analysing what it means being neither immigrant nor tourist in a foreign country, this thesis looks at the experiences of international PhD students and their supervisors in the Swedish university town Uppsala. The Faculty of Science and Technology of Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) are the universities studied. Based on anthropological methods, this thesis focuses on the individual actors as they attempt to match the objective of doing a PhD while at the same time being in a different country. Using practice theory, the study highlights that the experiences of international PhD students and the people working with them vary greatly from PhD student to PhD student. Yet, almost all undergo a certain form of self-formation and adjustment process to match the requirements of not only their host country, but also the international field of science they attempt to enter. Being connected to other people in similar situations can help them adapt to this new environment, and many international PhD students join communities of practice. I argue that most develop an internationally recognised habitus, which helps them being recognised by the international community. The habitus can further, under certain circumstances, become partially conscious.

Syed, Sabrina. "Exploring international female doctoral students' narratives through the lenses of intersectionality and feminist standpoint theory." Thesis, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1440215.

Full text
Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
International female doctoral students face multiple complexities in their academic learning events arising from language barriers, cultural differences and personal matters while negotiating everyday life in a foreign country. Nested within the epistemological positioning of feminist standpoint theory and intersectionality, this research explores the socio-cultural and academic experiences of thirteen international female doctoral students in the Australian tertiary education system. Using a narrative inquiry approach, the analysis and discussion in this thesis draw on personal stories to open up a space to understand the complexity of participants' lives during their studies in Australia. The research objective is to present an exploration of the complexity of participants' experiences in Australia. It does through narratives providing a critical perspective to understand how multiple identities through social categories such as race, class, gender, nationality and ethnicity are interlaced to shape participants' learning and living experiences in Australia. This research enhances our critical understanding regarding the influences of participants' intersecting identities on their perceptions, thus defining their standpoint during and before their PhD. Moreover, the study points out how each participants’ circumstances, including socio-cultural, political and academic conditions, encouraged them to aspire to PhD studies. Gender (in)equality is an ongoing global and political matter affecting all girls and women across different geopolitical spaces. In contemporary societies across multiple cultures, it is common to see more men than women in dominant political and economic positions with power for decision-making. Critical discussions about gender inequality are not new within the tertiary education sector. Women's voices are often minimised across faculty, and student populations within the tertiary sector, and international female students' voices are even more marginalised. One of the key barriers for international students' voices to be heard is related to socio-cultural differences, which has created a unique parallel community for international students that is further excluded from Australia's proclaimed multicultural society. In this type of small but specific community, due to its complex politics of differences, international female doctoral students deal with challenges in their lifeworlds that they need to negotiate and navigate during their learning and living in Australia. Finally, the research aims to aid educators in acknowledging or even taking into consideration PhD candidates' multiple identities and complex lives to understand participants' life events from their standpoints.

Abstract:
This study is centred on transformation towards sustainable living. It investigated how global education prepares learners to live a sustainable lifestyle. To explore this area, the concept of sustainability, global education and transformative learning were critically examined, with a view to finding their relationships. Literature on sustainability, transformative learning and global education were reviewed to find out how their relationships impact on international students learning about sustainable living. The focus of the thesis is on environmental sustainability, especially through management of anthropogenic factors. The mixed methods research, involving the collection of quantitative and qualitative data was employed for the study. Quantitative data collection was done using survey instruments while qualitative data collection was through face-to-face interview of research participants. Each set of data was collected and analysed separately. The outcomes of the analysis of the two sets of data were integrated at the stage of discussion of findings. The aim of the study was to find out whether global education transforms learners towards sustainable living. Findings from the study showed that global education field transforms students towards sustainable living. Evidence from the study suggests that global education help students to acquire the skills and knowledge required for living sustainably. Also, the actions and behaviours of international students were found to be influenced more towards sustainable lifestyle than those from the host country. The degree of transformation students experience was measured by attitude change, intention to change and actions of students toward the environment. This study contributed to the conceptual understanding of the relationship between global education and transformation of learners towards sustainable living. It made both theoretical and practical contribution to knowledge. The findings from the study will be of benefit to different impact groups. These groups include business organisations, policy makers in government, educational institutions, and individuals.

Eze, Eze Ogbonnia. "Exploring international students experiences of studying in UK universities: a narrative inquiry of Nigerian students." Thesis, 2014. https://arro.anglia.ac.uk/id/eprint/550498/1/PHD%20THESIS%20EZE.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a narrative inquiry of 10 international students from Nigeria studying in selected UK universities. The thesis draws from emerging discourse on international student’s overseas experiences and extends this knowledge by analysing these experiences from the framework of trauma, individuation, spiritual emergency and the African initiation process, in an attempt to gain an in depth knowledge of Nigerian students’ experiences of studying abroad in the current period. The previous understanding of international students’ experiences from culture shock framework does not account for how their difficult experiences affect their psychological, emotional, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing, so this thesis have reconceptualised these problems and explained them in more depth using the trauma framework and contributed to knowledge in this area. It is an exploratory qualitative study and data for the study was gathered through narrative interviewing. The narrative or story telling method applied in this study enabled the researcher to capture how the participants construct meaning to their lived experiences. The narrative inquiry is chosen because it gives voice to silenced group of people like the Nigerian students whose experiences are not heard. Narratives gathered were textually analysed to evidence the narrators’ unique individual experiences. Findings revealed that the participants had experiences that coincided with trauma experiences such as feeling of helplessness, disorganization, confusion, depression, sleeplessness and disorientation, lack of concentration and supressed emotion as they lived and studied in UK. The thesis concluded from the findings of the study that there is resemblance of trauma experiences in the participants’ stories. The study recommends that support was necessary when they are in UK, while adequate information should be provided before the students sojourn to the UK since most of their difficulties were as a result of failed expectations from their preconceptions about studying in the UK before they arrived.
