Abstract:
Professional events that feature face-to-face interaction of social scientists from across the world are, next to publications and research, important forms of scientific knowledge production and dissemination. Thus, they are vital to the World Science System (WSS). Like other WSS elements, scholarly involvement in international social science events is characterized by unequal cross-national representation. This article focuses in-depth on the International Sociological Association (ISA), a major international social science professional association, to examine inequality in attendance at its flagship conferences. To what extent do countries differ with respect to the number of scholars attending ISA conferences? What factors drive attendance? The authors base their hypotheses on the economic, political and social dimensions that influence country representation. To test these hypotheses the authors use a dataset containing information on 212 countries and their participation in the eight ISA conferences – World Congresses and Forums – held from 1990 to 2012. Results show that a country’s GDP, level of democracy and social science research infrastructure (SSRI) substantially determine their level of representation. SSRI effects are significant above and beyond the effect of GDP and of other controls. Findings also show a meaningful over-time decrease in representation inequality according to countries’ GDP.

In the article the authors analyze the development of Western sociological science during 20 years that have passed between the 14th and 19th ISA Congresses held in Canada (in Montreal – in 1998 and Toronto –in 2018, respectively) and claim the crisis state of Western sociology at the moment, largely due to the departure and rejection of basic research, the transition mainly to applied and reduced professionalism in the sociological sphere. Since the Congress of the International Sociological Association is the largest scientific event, it is of interest to evaluate the results of sociological research presented in the reports of the participants, to analyze the methods used and the chosen scientific directions, as well as the potential of sociologists. And the 19th ISA Congress showed that along with the Western sociological schools that are currently experiencing a crisis, new sociological schools are being formed in South Africa and Australia, which have achieved noteworthy results.

Nair, Deepak. "Emotional Labor and the Power of International Bureaucrats." International Studies Quarterly 64, no. 3 (June 12, 2020): 573–87. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/isq/sqaa030.

Abstract:
Abstract This article advances a theory on the power of international bureaucrats and bureaucracies in world politics. It argues that bureaucrats become powerful when they stage emotionally calibrated performances as “servants” before state principals and carve out space for action through “whispering,” “propagating,” cultivating patrons, and building coalitions in the backstage of official interaction. These “servant” performances involve what sociologist Arlie Hochschild calls “emotional labor”—the management of feelings in work performances. I develop a theory of emotional labor that suggests why international bureaucrats manage emotions as they perform as servants and why some bureaucrats with prized sociological profiles are empowered on the back of “confident” servant performances. In contrast to principal–agent, constructivist, and psychological accounts, this is a micro-sociological explanation for bureaucratic power. I evaluate this theory with an ethnography of the Secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)—a “least likely” case for bureaucratic power under prevailing theorizations. I also demonstrate how the ASEAN case is a sharper instance of a more general phenomenon. This article advances the study of emotions and emotional labor, the role of social class in shaping competent practice, and the debate on the power of bureaucrats and international organizations in international relations.

Abstract:
Abstract Sociability or “the play form of association” appears in a range of interactions in world politics sited at banquets, drinking gatherings, golf courses, and even the sauna. Notwithstanding this salience, the form and effects of sociability are poorly understood in International Relations. This article fills this gap. It conceptualizes sociability—its distinct sociological structure; its variations along class, race, and gender; its effects on social interaction—and argues that sociability matters in world politics. Specifically, sociability contributes to identity formation and community maintenance, enables learning, produces social capital, and generates a “backstage” where actors can manage disagreement. I substantiate this argument by examining the sociability fostered from playing golf in the diplomacy of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). I explain why golf emerged as a sociable practice in capitalist ASEAN's diplomacy in contrast to socialist and nonaligned circuits of Cold War Southeast Asia; examine the elite and male-homosocial character of this sociability; suggest how it influenced the Associations’ diplomacy; and outline the structural shifts that have led to its post–Cold War decline. This article contributes to the study of sociability in world politics, international practice theory, the political sociology of leisure, and the international politics of Southeast Asia.

Abstract:
This study starts from a criticism against the naturalization and depoliticization of the normative paradigm of modernity. Such criticism was made by some contemporary philosophical-sociological theories that associated modernity directly with universalism and conceived it as the final stage of human evolution (in terms of epistemological-moral consciousness, culture and material organization), as opposed to traditionalism. The article argues that modernity is not a universalistic epistemological-moral paradigm or a material and societal organization from which multiculturalism can be embraced, promoted and guided, particularly in the international context. Consequently, I reject the direct association, proposed by such philosophical-sociological theories, of universalism, cosmopolitanism and globalization with the epistemological, cultural and economic modernization. In other words, universalism does not mean modernization, as it does not justify the totalizing pursuit of modernity as a paradigm and a material-institutional form of life for all contexts and as a condition for their stability. I therefore propose a reformulation of the paradigm of modernity with the concept of Western colonialism reparation, which must start from the recognition of the historical-sociological blindness concerning the intrinsic link between the normativity of modernity and the Realpolitik of modern colonialism. Such blindness implies the statement that modernity is inherently self-reflexive, justifying it as the basic paradigm for the context of modernity as well as for the sphere of international politics. This would reinforce its permanence as a universalistic paradigm and cosmopolitan ethical-political project. Based on that separation, modernity can always function as the starting point and as the point of arrival to universalism, transforming modernization into universalism itself.

Abstract:
This paper brings the process of formation and evolution of an international network organization, the Association of Universities Grupo Montevideo (AUGM), from the perspective of social capital. The importance of this study is justified both by the rarity in the Latin American context and by the fact that analyses the organizational performance from a sociological perspective of capital. Under an interpretive epistemological concept, it was developed a qualitative approach with case study method and techniques of focused interviews and analysis of social networks with UCINET software. It was observed that, through the network interaction, it could be established standards and expectations for the development of activities, with interpretations and information shared by appropriate canals. Thus, due to a set of intangible assets developed based on interpersonal relationships maintained in the organizational network, the AUGM was institutionalized at universities members and in the international environment.

Abstract:
Beginning with the Jürgen Habermas’ reconstruction of a normative model of European cultural modernity as basis to a contemporary notion of epistemological-moral universalism as condition to critic, to integration and to intervention, which leads to the affirmation that democracy and human rights represent the modernity’s fundamental legacy, I will discuss that such theoretical reconstruction only can be possible from a historical-sociological blindness which is based on the separation between a normative notion of European cultural modernity and the Realpolitik of colonialism – just from this theoretical-political standpoint it is possible to sustain a universalistic normative paradigm which is capable to ground the criticism, the integration and the intervention of all social-cultural contexts, which means that modern culture and normativism can serve as medium and guide of all particular cultures, at least in a strong way. Against that optimistic role of the Habermasian normative model of European cultural modernity, I will argue that democracy and human rights as modernity’s legacy have basically two tasks in the contemporary Realpolitik: first, to restrain the modernity’s totalizing tendency to rationalization and to globalization, i.e. its movement of assimilation of all cultures and societies in a model of epistemological, cultural and economic universalism; and to ground an international institutional politics based on the social-economic reparation for the colonialism, which implies in a universalistic extension of the social rights to all people in the world (for example, the Philippe van Parijs’ idea of basic income).

Neshataev, V. Yu. "The Project of the All-Russian сode of phytosociological nomenclature." Vegetation of Russia, no. 1 (2001): 62–70. http://dx.doi.org/10.31111/vegrus/2001.01.62.

Abstract:
The Code of phytosociological nomenclature of the International Association of Vegetation Science (Barkman et al., 1986) may be applied only to floristic-sociological classification of vegetation. Russian phytosociological tradition was based on the dominant aproach and used since 1900 the nomenclature proposed by R. Sernander. Though for a long time there were no formal rules in the form of the code. In 1989 the author published the Project of the All-Union Code of the Phytocoenological Nomenclature. Since that time many Russian phytosociologists applied the Code in their works. The author received many suggestions on the improvement of the Code that were taken into account in the new variant of the Code. The Code consists of principles, rules and advices. The Code is independent of the Code of the floristic-sociological classification. It regulates the names of syntaxa. Syntaxon is the type of the plant community with the determined rank. The usage of the names of the syntaxa is based on the nomenclature types (types of names) and the priority in the publication of their diagnoses and releves. The Code is retroactive to 1900. The ranks of the syntaxa of the main system (in ascending order) are the next: variant, subassociation, association, group of associations, class of associations, subformation, formation, group of formations, class of formations, subtype of vegetation, type of vegetation, group of types of vegetation, class of types of vegetation, subdivision, division. The main ranks are association, formation, type of vegetation, division. The ortogonal system is used mainly for the forest plant communities and based on the similarity of the moss and the grass layers. It has two ranks of syntaxa — cicle and group of cycles. The name of the formation is based on the names of one or two dominating species or on the names of dominating ecobiomorfs. The nomenclature type of the formation is the association. The names of the syntaxa that have the rank higher then formation must be made of the name of the formation that is the nomenclature type of the syntaxon. The suffixes in the names of formation and higher syntaxa are the next: formation — «-eta», group of formations — «-etesum», class of fomations — «-etosa», subtype of vegetation — «-etium», type of vegetation — «‑etion», group of types of vegetation — «-phytum», class of types of vegetation — «-phytosa», subdivision — «‑phytium», division — «-phytion». The names of associations, groups and classes of associations and subformations are binary. The first word in the name is the name of formation to which the association belonges with the suffix «-etum» for association, «‑eta» for group, class of associations and subformations. The second word is made of the names of constant or dominant one or two species or of the names of dominating ecobiomorfs with the suffix «-osum» for association and «-osa» for group of associations, «-osium» for classes of associations, «-osion» for subformation. The type of the name of the association is the published releve in which the abundance or the cover is shown for all species. The name of subassociation consists of the name of association, the word subass. and the word characterising dominant, constant species or structural, ecological, ecobiomorfological peculiarities of the suassociation The suffix of the last word is «-osum». For the suassociation containing the nomenclature type of association the name «typicum» may be used. The name of variant consists of the name of the association, the word var. and the word characterising the variant with suffix «-osum». The last word may be produced similarly as the last word in the name of subassociation. The names of cycle and group of cycles must be made of the second part of the name of the assotiation that is a type of cycle or the group of cycles. The suffix for cycle is «-osum» for the group of cycles «-osa».

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article, based on an edited transcript of a speech at The Australian Sociological Association (TASA) conference in Melbourne in December 2016, summarises the criticisms of ‘economic rationalism’, cum neoliberalism, that emerged from the ‘economic rationalism debate’ in Australia of the early 1990s to the present. Economic rationalism reversed Australia’s historic nation-building legacy. Free market neoliberal doctrines have captured the central Canberra policy-making apparatus and radically reduced the coordinating role of the state in most areas of public policy. Economic ‘reform’ is seen primarily as a political project led by international and domestic corporate interest groupings and aimed at the transformation of Australia’s institutions. The neoliberal orthodoxy continues to distort the policy process as it has become functionally indispensable for the process of policy making and government, despite its failing intellectual legitimacy.

Man and technology are inseparable: man produces technology, but the latter contributes to the continuous transformation of man. Today biological evolution based on random genetic mutations is largely exceeded by cultural (more specifically, technological) evolution, which is much faster due to the presence of Lamarckian inheritance mechanisms (imitation, learning and the like). This has two important consequences: 1) the formation of Homo technologicus, a symbiotic creature where biology meets technology intimately and is subject to a continuous transformation; and 2) the formation of a sort of Planetary Creature that originates from the interconnection of the individual man-machine symbionts and is heralded by the Internet and by the communication activities occurring in the Internet, in particular those taking place in the so-called social networks. The Planetary Creature is a single world-wide structure where important communication and cognitive processes occur, developing into a sort of connective intelligence that tends to absorb individual intelligences. This encroaching process can produce resistance and dissent as well as suffering, but can also enhance individual abilities. Actually, the growing efficiency and the decreasing costs of the communication mediated by technology offer unprecedented opportunities for augmenting knowledge and creativity and for eliciting novel forms of intellectual activity. On the other hand there might be negative consequences such as addiction to computers and virtuality, delegation of activities and abilities to machines, vulnerability of complex systems, undue control on individuals and economic exploitation. Some important consequences of these developments are examined concerning the body, the time and space categories, and in particular the identity concept. This text is the keynote address of Guiseppe O. Longo at the 9th International Conference on Sociocybernetics, organised by the Research Committee 51 of the International Sociological Association (ISA) in Urbino, 29 June - 5 July 2009. The theme of the conference was: `Modernity 2.0 - Emerging Social Media Technologies and Their Impacts´. Longo presents here the perspective of engineering science towards sociological issues. He has published several books on that topic, so far in Italian language only. Though some of his statements in the text don't seem well-founded to sociological readers or may be deemed highly speculative, we decided to make his ideas accessible to the non- Italian world. Abstract:
This paper sets out to explore the concept of hegemony in the field of conference interpreting practice. It presents the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) as the hegemon in conference interpreting and examines its power as a policy maker. The paper associates this type of investigation with the sociological turn in conference interpreting research. It takes two large-scale surveys by Feldweg (1996) and Zwischenberger (2013) as its starting point, based on the self-representations of conference interpreter members of AIIC. The examples taken from these two surveys reveal a consistent degree of consensus and highlight the hegemonic power exerted by AIIC. This study’s main focus is on appropriating the hegemony concept for conference interpreting and thereby showing that AIIC governs the entire field of conference interpreting practice. AIIC’s power as a policy maker is based on a large degree of consent, although its hegemonic power is not uncontested.

Abstract:
This article explores the relational power and responsibilities to migrant workers on physical infrastructure projects in Qatar connected to the sovereign state hosting the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup 2022. Currently, these construction workers operate under the Kafala system, which is upheld in Qatar. However, large numbers of Qatar’s visiting migrant construction workers were recorded as injured or killed through incidents that were related to their work. Further still, many other migrant workers reported poor, unsanitary living conditions and being ‘trapped’ by their Kafil with passports withheld or wages not forthcoming, prompting criticism from international non-governmental organizations. This article adopts a relational sociological approach to discuss how ‘responsibilities’ for deaths, injuries and illnesses are passed between key actors that include the State of Qatar, FIFA, World Cup sponsors, building contractors and sub-contractors, and the recruitment agencies that find workers in other countries to work on the construction sites. As such, it makes three scholarly contributions: it leads in unpacking and discussing the treatment of migrant construction workers in World Cup 2022 infrastructure projects in Qatar; it follows work by Timms in adding to the literature on the passing of responsibilities for migrant workers between states and corporations in globalized societies; and it uses the case to further critically unpack Castells’ notions of relational power in networks.

Abstract:
Each year about a million people worldwide take their lives, and a further unknown number, but probably no less than 20 million, attempt suicide. In addition, for every person who engages in suicidal behavior, another five or six will be associated with them in some way, making a conservative total of 100 million people worldwide who are affected each year—and to whom we have some degree of responsibility. There is no one approach to suicide prevention, and probably more so than for any other human condition, we are privileged to be able to collaborate with many different disciplines in our endeavors. However, there is a considerable responsibility to ensure that whatever our own area of expertise and interest may be, we should apply universal principals of objective analysis to these diverse contributions. This is addressed by examining research from four broad areas. First, there are studies that irrevocably bring together the sociological and biological approaches to suicide. Second, there are reports that support the notion of the universality of suicide. Third, despite considerable attention paid to the media, its influence on suicide is very limited. And finally, although there have been pessimistic reviews, there are persuasive data from innovative research designs that have documented that we can prevent suicide.

Abstract:
The article, based on the analysis of scientific, empirical and journalistic sources, testifies to the need to study the state and problems of implementation of international legal standards of "cultural service" in the modern system of public legal provision of social and cultural services using the necessary administrative and legal tools. The specifics of international legal documents to ensure the implementation of socio-cultural rights and freedoms of citizens, which is to solve legal, technical, scientific and administrative problems of the industry. The basic documents developed by international organizations affect not only the national legislation of the member states, but also the use of experience, which in turn contributes to the optimization of the system of cultural services. The main attention is paid to the world standards of regulation of cultural space and provision of cultural services to the population, which are enshrined in the most important international legal documents on culture, which are established through the prism of the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Emphasis is placed on the permanent imperfection of the current "cultural" legislation and systemic miscalculations in the issues of legal provision of the population with a quality cultural product, which is confirmed by the data of the sociological survey, according to which 58.1% of respondents guarantees of providing citizens with cultural services (basic set of cultural services) are called those that require significant improvement. Emphasis is placed on the importance of international legal norms, which act as the main regulator of "cultural" legal relations, because their regulations lay down the basic principles on which the national "cultural" law of a country should be based. It is international acts that allow the formation of unified norms for the regulation of legal relations in the cultural sphere.

Abstract:
ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Christina Viskum Lytken Larsen: Pathological Gambling Among Greenland Inuit – A Sociological Approach to Addictive Behavior in a Society Undergoing Rapid Transition The aim of this paper is to analyze the social problems in Greenland in relation to the rapid transition which characterizes the Greenlandic society by using a sociological perspective on social pathologies and social transition. Pathological gambling is used as an example of the high prevalence of social problems that proposes a current challenge in modern Greenland. The association between pathological gambling, use of alcohol and marijuana is also analyzed. Data was collected in towns and villages across Greenland as a part of the international study Inuit Health in Transition. A total of 2454 persons were interviewed and 2189 of these also filled out a self-administered questionnaire. The study shows that the prevalence of pathological gambling is lower among hunters and fishermen in villages and professionals in towns than in other social groups. In addition the prevalence of harmful use of alcohol and marijuana among pathological gamblers was relatively high. A significant association between pathological gambling and social groups defined by their involvement in the ongoing social transition suggests that people caught between tradition and modern ways of life are especially vulnerable. Furthermore, the association between pathological gambling and other addictive behaviors underlines the importance of a comprehensive approach in understanding these phenomena. Keywords: gambling, inuit, Greenland, social pathology, addictive behavior.

The main purpose is to look at the ways how a “self”-centred practice of literary research and teaching (formalistic as well as sociological approaches, restricting World Literature to the Western mainstream, or just dealing with one’s own national literature, avoiding its comparative contextualization) could be gradually replaced by a symbioticdialogical treatment of literature, capable of providing our activity with a firm and solid ethical dimension, something that would definitely strengthen the position of humanities in the world academia.

Abstract:
What is a model? A frequently asked question by an observer when sharing the record of their work describing reality when communicating findings. However, there are other related questions: Has the model been validated? Is the model valid? Is the model useful? This article gives possible answers to these questions from the sociocybernetics paradigm. The second order, the observation of the observer, is an integral approach to the study of the model concept, but, above all, to the action involved: making a model. The text draws on systems theory and offers a reflection on the possibilities, alternatives, barriers and potentials of making models-based sociocybernetics and, also, sociocybernetics-based models. The reader will find a review of the approach to reality through models, the scales of observables and observers, an account of main works related to model theory and practice, and a review of tools available for making and simulating models and discussion on model value. The article concludes with a review of the last 20 years of the International Sociological Association (ISA) Research Committee 51 (RC51) on Sociocybernetics activity related to models and modelling.

At the meso-level (institutional-level), early childcare facilities (eg, kindergartens, preschools) are the most important agent of socialisation next to families in young children aged 06 years. In recent years, an increasing amount of studies has focused on contextual and compositional characteristics of early childcare facilities and their association with health (eg, self-rated health), health behaviour (eg, physical activity) and well-being (eg, emotional well-being) in this age group. However, as currently no overview of the available literature on this topic exists, we will conduct a scoping review including various study designs (eg, cross-sectional studies, prospective studies, qualitative studies). Methods and analysisWe will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. A systematic search of the following scientific databases will be conducted: PubMed/Medline, PsycInfo, Sociological Abstracts, Education Resources Information Center and The Cochrane Library. During the selection process, we will follow a two-step process. First, two reviewers will independently screen titles/abstracts of all potentially eligible articles by applying a set of previously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. After the completion of the title/abstract screening, full texts of the remaining articles will be screened following the same procedure. To determine inter-rater agreement between reviewers, we will calculate Cohen’s Kappa after both steps. Key characteristics (eg, country of origin, sample size, study design) of included articles will be extracted. We will map the evidence available by providing a summary table on the key characteristics extracted and by presenting the associations using various types of illustrations.Ethics and disseminationSince no primary data will be collected for this review, ethical approval is not required. Our findings will be published in an international peer-reviewed journal and presented at national and international conferences.

Abstract:
As newly elected President of the International Sociological Association, I unfold my vision for new directions for global sociology. After defining what a global sociology is, I will point out two particular directions for this sociology: supplementing the postcolonial approach with an anti-authoritarian one, and theorizing post-secular society. One cannot but acknowledge the scars of the colonial era, but postcolonial studies have been rightly used but also abused. I would identify two abuses: the over-emphasis on external factors while neglecting local ones, and the binary logic of antagonistic categories such as East/West, universalism/contextualism. Thus, I make the call to supplement the postcolonial approach with an anti-authoritarian one. There are three levels of authoritarianism: one relates to the political regime; another relates rather to neoliberalism; and the third concerns attitudes. The authoritarian attitude is closely related to the difficulty of dealing with religion in our society. Global sociology should take into account in any contemporary analysis of society the new features of our post-secular society, a sort of low-key secularism in confluence with neoliberalism. In light of these two directions, I would like to see global sociology moving forward. But what should the features of this global sociology be? The article will discuss five features for global sociology.

Abstract:
Manuscript type: Research paperResearch aims: This study aims to examine the underlying psychological and sociological factors that drive excess trading in the Malaysian stock market during a global health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/Methodology/Approach: A self-administered online questionnaire was collected from 271 individual investors to examine the association between big-five personality traits and trading frequency. Demographic information and investment behaviours of investors were also included in the study. The multinomial logit regression model was used to test the research hypotheses. Research findings: Findings show that personality traits such as openness to experience and agreeableness have a significant influence on trading frequency. Demographic factors and investment behaviours such as gender, household income level, years of investment experience and type of investor all have a significant positive relationship with trading frequency. Theoretical contribution/Originality: This study contributes to the current investor behaviour literature in Malaysia, which remains to be very limited, especially during a global health crisis. The study indicates that personality traits, demographic, socio-economic factors, and investment behaviours affect the trading frequency of Malaysian. Practitioner/Policy implication: This study offers insights for financial institutions and individual investors on the type of personality traits, demographic, socio-economic factors, and investment behaviours that drive excess trading during a global health crisis. The findings provide important contributions to avoid serious mistakes in investment analysis and trading profitable investment strategies, thus improving individual and team performance. Research limitation/Implications: Some results are not significant and may be limited due to the small sample size used in this study. Future research could recruit more retail investors to confirm the significance level of those variables. Besides, the study can be conducted after the COVID-19 pandemic to explore whether there is any significant difference in the variables during and after the global health crisis.
