Abstract:
Over the years, a number of studies have identified the failure of expatriate ƒ{ the early termination of an international assignment ƒ{ as a major problem for multinational enterprises (MNE). MNEs in, for example the USA, have reported expatriate failure rates of as high as 40 percent for assignments to developed countries and 70 percent when assignments are in developing countries. These failures can cost the MNE three times the expatriates¡¦ annual salary plus the cost of the relocation. This dissertation positions the International Concrete Poetry movement within its historical moment and links it to the emergence of a new global imaginary around the middle of the 20th century. It makes the argument that contemporaneous social and technological shifts directly influenced the compositional strategies of a group of poets who aimed to transform poetry’s communicative power in a rapidly shifting media environment. This thesis is a study of dominant global discourse. The whaling issue provides a discrete case for analysing a powerful discourse, that is, both traversed by relations of power, and conferring power upon the actors wielding it. The main line of enquiry is how discourses mark actors’ identities, and establish them as subjects of international relations. The actors implicated here are states and NGOs. Forty years ago, whaling was widely synonymous with national interest; it was the hallmark of ‘whaling nations’. The first global whale discourse, then, was a state discourse, entren

Typically portrayed as vital service-providing agencies that by-pass official controls to relay civil society concerns to the world’s media and international policy-makers, TANs are commonly assumed to be the vociferous, Internet-enabled, offspring of traditional NGOs and, thus, heirs to
