This paper presents work being done at NASA/GSFC by the Operating Missions as Nodes on the Internet (OMNI) project to demonstrate the application of Internet communication technologies to space communication. The goal is to provide global addressability and standard network protocols and applications for future space missions. It describes the communication architecture and operations concepts that will be deployed and tested on a Space Shuttle flight in July 2002. This is a NASA Hitchhiker mission called Communication and Navigation Demonstration On Shuttle (CANDOS). The mission will be using a small programmable transceiver mounted in the Shuttle bay that can communicate through NASA’s ground tracking stations as well as NASA’s space relay satellite system. The transceiver includes a processor running the Linux operating system and a standard synchronous serial interface that supports the High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) framing protocol. One of the main goals will be to test the operation of the Mobile IP protocol (RFC 2002) for automatic routing of data as the Shuttle passes from one contact to another. Other protocols to be utilized onboard CANDOS include secure login (SSH), UDP-based reliable file transfer (MDP), and blind commanding using UDP. The paper describes how each of these standard protocols available in the Linux operating system can be used to support communication with a space vehicle. It will discuss how each protocol is suited to support the range of special communication needs of space missions.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine how local communities can be encouraged or enhanced in an apartment complex with the help of a local collaboration platform. I examine the relationship that exists within between neighbors in the apartment building in Sweden. Moreover, I focus on presenting relevant theory regarding neighborly relations along with research on creating local communities. I perform a series of interviews with people living in residential building in Sweden and the use of relevant methods for creating me an understanding of how we can use the areas located on the border of private and public space inside the residence. My research will also focus on how windows can be used to encourage local involvement and create a sense of community within the residential building. As part of the thesis, I highlight some relevant projects previously done in terms of neighborhood and community research, too.

Very little research has been conducted to understand how the technology revolution has changed and impacted couple relationships. The proposed study examined the impact of technology on couples in committed relationships through the lens of the couple and technology framework. Specifically, this study used data from 2,826 European couples to examine associations between online boundary crossing, online intrusion, relationship satisfaction, and partner responsiveness. The results suggest that when participants’ reported that their partner checked up on their online activities more frequently that this was linked with lower scores on relationship satisfaction and partner responsiveness. Also, decreased scores for relationship satisfaction and partner responsiveness were associated with increased acceptance for their partner using the Internet to talk with someone attractive about everyday life or pop culture, personal information, and relationship troubles or concerns. Lastly, the results suggest that men, but not women, who reported greater acceptability for online boundary crossing were more likely to have partners who reported lower relationship satisfaction in their relationships. Implications for clinicians, relationship educators, and researchers are discussed.

Abstract:
Television is moving towards Internet-based services with an increasing popularity of online streaming and connected TV sets. However, the lean-back viewing experience is often forgotten in the design of such services – traditional broadcasted television is still the source for relaxed entertainment in the living room. In this study, a concept of a new TV service is proposed. The aim is to create a solution where the qualities in traditional television are preserved in an online environment. The decisions that were taken when shaping this concept are based on a literature study, a market analysis, a design workshop and expert interviews. The main results are that the interfaces of today’s Internet-based TV services require too much interaction and decision-making, and that TV channels should be redefined and take more advantage from the independence of a fixed broadcasted source.

Knutsson, Björn. "Architectures for application transparent proxies : A study of network enhancing software." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology, 2001. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-802.

Full text
Abstract:

Proxies, software deployed inside the network, play a fundamental role in the Internet by providing enhanced functionality to the network. Deployment of proxies is a flexible way of extending the Internet architecture with new services and to cope with problems that were not foreseen at the time the original Internet protocols were defined. The creation of the Internet is an enormous investment in time, effort and money, and proxies allow us to build on the existing infrastructure to enhance its functionality, rather than replace it.

As the use of proxies increase, so does the problem of proxy configuration and deployment, especially with respect to interference between different proxies. With a limited number of different proxies, this problem can be dealt with manually, or by encoding knowledge of interfering proxies into each proxy. As the number of proxies grow, methods to automatically detect and cope with conflicts must be devised.

Therefore, proxies need to coordinate with each other. Towards this end, a signalling protocol that can be used to establish and configure a sequence of one or more proxies along an end-to-end flow is proposed. The protocol is realized as an extension of IP, using an IP option, which simplifies its deployment in the Internet.

In order to facilitate reasoning about coordination, conflicts and deployment of proxies, a model has been developed. The model is based on the concept of regions, also developed in the thesis. Regions are interconnected parts of the network that share a common property, e.g. administrative control or error characteristic. Along with the model, a classification of proxy architectures with respect to how they gather information and deploy proxies is presented. A method based on this model is also proposed.

We also propose an algorithm for controlling compression to maximize perceived throughput in situations where available bandwidth and CPU power varies. Along with the algorithm, experimental results that show that the algorithm approximates the best non-adaptive choice in a number of situations are presented. This algorithm has been implemented as an end-to-end enhancement.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the problems of how to design scalable, robust, and distributed real-time media applications for the Internet. An agent based framework for solving this problem is presented. The framework promotes several important design requirements such as modularity and reusability of software modules, remote management of applications, adaptiveness, robustness, accessibility, symmetry and the most important scalability. The issue of scalability is examined on several levels including data-distribution, different end-user platforms, scalability of real-time media flows, bandwidth adaption and scalability of sessions. The design of the framework is based on the important concept of IP-multicast, which allows for scalable distribution of data on the Internet. How this decision has influenced the design of the framework is examined in the thesis. The design of the framework have been verified by building a reference implementation in Java and building a number of high-level end-user applications for real-time e-meetings, e-learning (net-based learning) and social awareness via the e-corridor.

Esta presença tem transformado, irreversivelmente, a forma como as pessoas pensam, agem e se relacionam com as outras. Essas mudanças provêm da rapidez com que são disponibilizadas e processadas as informações. O comunicar parece interconectar e aproximar indivíduos, fazendo aflorar percepções e situações vividas no cotidiano, que podem interferir na prática escolar. Dessa forma, esse estudo envolveu adolescentes que têm acesso a esses novos equipamentos, os quais têm influenciado na maneira de se comunicar e informar dentro e fora da escola. Portanto, sua implicação, no contexto escolar, foi analisada nesta pesquisa, cujos sujeitos investigados foram alunos do Ensino Médio de uma escola particular. O objetivo foi o de investigar a influência das novas tecnologias (computador e Internet) no cotidiano dos adolescentes e sua utilização no processo educacional. Foi utilizado, como instrumento de pesquisa, um questionário, aplicado aos adolescentes. Dentre as questões de estudo tivemos: a Internet e o computador são considerados ferramentas a serviço do conhecimento? Como é que vem sendo utilizada a Internet pelos adolescentes, e como a utilizam na educação? Após a análise dos dados, foi possível observar que: os adolescentes percebem a utilização do computador e da Internet como fonte de informação e sua utilidade como pesquisa. No que diz respeito à indagação da utilização do computador e da Internet como forma de aproximar ou afastar as pessoas do meio ambiente, os adolescentes, em maior percentual, enfatizaram que essas tecnologias afastam as pessoas do meio ambiente, pois o equipamento causa vício para aqueles que não têm um autocontrole de sua utilização, distanciando do meio ambiente natural. Finalizando, os adolescentes percebem as novas tecnologias como ferramenta a serviço do conhecimento.lt;/pgt;

Algarni, Abeer Dhafer. "Video conferencing technology for distance learning in Saudi Arabia : current problems, feasible solutions and developing an innovative interactive communication system based on internet and wifi technology for communication enhancement." Thesis, Durham University, 2014. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/10840/.

Abstract:
Context: In Saudi Arabia, distance-learning plays a vital role in the female higher education system. This system is considered unique among all the world’s countries because, for religious reasons, intermixing of the genders is not allowed within most educational settings in Saudi society. This system is currently facing a problem with an overflow of female students in higher educational institutions as these institutions suffer from a lack of female faculty members. To resolve this problem, all universities in Saudi Arabia utilise synchronous distance learning technologies such as video and audio conferences technologies for the delivery of subjects by male faculty members to female students, as this is the only authorised way for male faculty to teach female students. Although this method has been used in Saudi Arabia continuously since 1970, no study has addressed the perceptions of female students, regarding the problems they face whilst studying, through such technologies or proposed any solution for these problems. Aim: The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of female students at King Saud University regarding the difficulties and barriers they encounter in the distance learning classrooms that use video conferencing technology. This study also proposes feasible solutions for the most common problems. It has developed an innovative interactive communication system, CommEasy, based on the internet and Wi-Fi technologies for handheld devices and uses this system to enhance communication and participation in distance learning. Method: The research questions are answered by applying a mixture of quantitative and qualitative approaches that have been selected according to the nature of the research. A case study research design was chosen to address all the research questions related to KSU. Identifying the perceptions of female students about the problems they encounter in distance learning classrooms was gathered through a questionnaire with five main parts: classroom physical design, classroom physical features, technical support, communication and participation with male instructors and classroom management. Each part used a number of questions to measure the students' perceptions and the students were asked to respond to each question using a five-point Likert scale. Proposing feasible solutions for the problems reported by students required using a mixture of methods, such as observations, structured interviews and surveys. An incremental software development approach was used to develop the CommEasy tool that was used in this thesis and the quasi-experimental method was used to evaluate this tool in the actual learning environment. Results: The results of the thesis presented the perceptions of students towards the components of the distance-learning classrooms and showed all the satisfactory and unsatisfactory components. It produced a list of strategies for effective designing of the distance-learning classroom that uses video conference technology, produced a new physical design for the distance-learning classrooms that used video conference technologies, provided a set of feasible solutions for the problems identified and finally, showed that the CommEasy system has a positive impact, in supporting communication in the distance-learning classroom, leading to an increased level of student participation with instructors, as well as solving most of the problems students were faced with in this regard. Conclusions: in summary, the outcome of this thesis should provide both researchers and decision makers with an insight into the problems facing students in distance-learning, as well as providing them with feasible solutions for these problems. This thesis will serve as a basis for further research in this field to be conducted in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:
The Smart City concept is the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm under an urban context with the exploitation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) solutions. The typical Smart City scenario has to deal with an extensive amount of sensors and data generators, some of them placed in high mobile devices, deployed to collect and generate all type of information which will increase the number of communicating machines. This dissertation focuses on the development and implementation of a heterogeneous environmental sensing platform to serve as an infrastructure for Smart City applications. It aims to take advantage of the use of multiple communication technologies, namely long and short range. Being within an urban environment, the platform bene ts from an opportunistic and Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) through mobile entities that travel over the city, such as bicycles. Therefore, this dissertation proposes: (1) the design and development of the network and its elements; (2) an extension to a LoRa Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in order to endow it with capabilities to operate in multi-gateway environments; and lastly, (3) new forwarding strategies for the opportunistic network that takes into consideration the network topology. The performed evaluations showed that the proposed multi-gateway LoRa MAC protocol contributes to increase the LoRa network scalability, as well as its performance. The performed tests to the proposed DTN forwarding strategies evaluate the impact of each strategy on the network behavior, namely the delivery ratio, network overhead, number of transmitted packets, among others. As a result, it is possible to perceive which are the in- uences introduced by the proposed functionalities on the overall solution, and identify the characteristics of a scalable solution to collect massive data in an IoT environment.

Abstract:
The web browser has become one of the most recognizable software applications on consumer desktops. Yet its utilization and capabilities are often misunderstood. Recent innovations in the web have evolved the Internet into a network of sophisticated applications that defy historical uses of the “browser”; a term that itself has become somewhat of a misnomer. This research studies the evolving set of user expectations for the browser as an application platform and challenges certain anachronistic features, specifically the “back” button, that are unnecessary and confusing given the new environment that browsers are used in. Because of this shift, implicit new user requirements arise around the browser’s user interface. The back button, like other elements in the browser have already demonstrated, should be de-emphasized in modern iterations of web browsers. The study is qualified by an analysis of user behavior within a popular, modern, web application.

Feller, Gavin Stuart. "Media as compromise: a cultural history of Mormonism and new communication technology in twentieth-century America." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5753.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a qualitative and interpretive project aimed at understanding the historical relationship between new media and religion. My primary research question asks how religious institutions handle the excitement and threat of new technology. To answer this question I conduct a series of case studies of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ (LDS/Mormon) relationship with three of the most important twentieth-century media: emerging radio, television, and Internet technologies. More specifically, I analyze how these electronic media were understood through their organizational histories, how they were talked about in their novelty and transitional states, and their religious institutionalization over time. This dissertation argues that Mormon media are best understood through the concept of Zion: a sacred city and a holy people. As a social, cultural, theological, and material endeavor, Zion is impossible without modern technology. The history of Mormon media is a history of a people’s perpetual attempts to be in the world but not of the world--to stand apart in uniqueness and unity while yet remaining close enough to promote positive change. This is the paradox of Zion, and the paradox of twentieth-century media: both rely on the very things they seek to transcend. It is through media that Mormonism was founded, struggles, and thrives. Through case studies of radio, television, and the Internet it is clear that media function as the material and metaphysical infrastructure of the religion and the interface through which Mormonism positions itself in relation to the world. This dissertation argues that understanding media, and ultimately ourselves by extension, is a process of discovery and creation guided by experimentation, trial and error, entrepreneurial pragmatism, and improvisation. Mormonism teaches that understanding media requires discipline, work, and faith. Media are fundamentally agents of compromise.

Abstract:
This dissertation is devoted to a perspective from which IT-based information systems are conceived as information technological artefacts intended for business action and communication. The perspective has been made concrete through the concept of information systems actability, which is the main concept under scrutiny. The research contributions of the dissertation exist at various levels of abstration. First of all, the dissertation contributes to the understanding of information systems from a social action perspective. Based on identified weaknesses in contemporary conceptualizations of information systems, the concept of information systems actability is developed. This contribution consists of a reconciliation of various views on information system usage quality with its roots in a linguistic tradition including elements from organizational semiotics and the language/action perspective. At a more concrete level, this understanding, and the concept as such, have consequences for the development and evaluation of information systems. Such consequences have been the foundation for a proposed information systems design method, which thus constitutes a further contribution. Another contribution is the outlining of an information systems actability. As a further means of obtaining empirical experience of working with this concept, a descriptive analytic framework has been developed, which constitutes yet another contribution. These three operationalizations, the design method, the evaluation method and the analytic framework, have been developed and empirically grounded through a qualitative case study appproach involving four cases of information systems requirements specification, four evaluations of existing information systems, and two cases of description and characterization of information systems related phenomena from the perspective of actability. The latter two cases imply how further contributions at an even more concrete level, constituted by characterizations of Internet-based information systems and the local electronic marketplace, seen in the light of information systems actability.

Abstract:
According to a 2002 National Center for Education Statistics report, 98% of schools in 2001 were connected to the Internet and 63% of public classrooms had Internet connections. According to a 2003 United States Census Bureau report, 68.3% of homes with children subscribed to the Internet. These statistics reveal the scope of access children have to the Internet. This study focused on the children's voice by investigating the children's report of their online activities and their awareness of cyber security, ethics, and safety issues. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the specific reported online activities and Internet safety knowledge of children aged 10-14 years along with their report of parental supervision of their Internet use. The study included data gathered from 446 self-administered surveys completed by 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students in a rural school district in East Tennessee. An analysis of the research confirmed that as children mature, they increase their use of the Internet and their participation in unsafe online practices. The findings indicated that the most common online practices reported by the middle-grade students included emailing, social networking (MySpace), instant messaging, publishing and sharing information about their favorite sports and activities, and using secret codes while messaging with friends. The results of this study indicated significant relationships between the household placement of the computer and the frequency of unsafe online practices; students with computers in private locations reported unsafe online practices with twice the frequency of those with computers that could be monitored. The findings reflected that, in general, students were knowledgeable about unsafe Internet practices and engaged primarily in safe practices; however, many did report practices that could potentially place them at risk. The results from this study demonstrate a need for Internet safety programs to educate parents about the dangers their children face online and how to minimize those risks and to help children to gain the knowledge, decision-making skills, and motivation necessary to make safe and responsible choices when they are using the Internet.

Full text
Abstract:
With the addition of mesh capability to Bluetooth low energy(BLE) in 2017 new possibilities open up for the Internet of Things applications of Bluetooth. With the rapidly increasing number of connected devices a few new standards are competing for being the standard protocol for low power mesh communication. BLE is mostly aimed towards low bandwidth data such as sensor readings or light control. However, this thesis attempts to investigate the viability of adapting BLE mesh nodes to communicate DMX-data which is a protocol widely used in lightning and stage effects. The system is implemented on Bluetooth development kits and the latency and power consumption are measured. The results show that the latency is significant and with high variance if the full DMX frame is transmitted, rendering the application non-applicable on many real-time applications. It can however be justified in some applications due to Bluetooth's well established eco-system of devices and functionality where the nodes could extend their capabilities by implementing already established BLE models. By only transmitting the updated channels the latency can be lowered to values that would in some applications be indistinguishable from wired connection. The energy consumption of BLE mesh suffers greatly with the addition of mesh due to its constant scanning but by implementing low power nodes which keep the radio off during certain intervals this consumption could be greatly decreased. The results also show a high variance of latency depending on the node configuration regarding to the placements and the number of hops required to reach the intended recipient.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores how Internet use impacts four different measures of economic development using several econometric techniques on multi-country panel data. The economic development outcomes investigated are: per capita GDP, per capita export revenues, per capita market capitalization, and societal well-being as measured by the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Data from the World Bank, the International Telecommunication Union, and the United Nations -covering 202 countries over the period 1996 to 2007- are combined to allow for empirical investigation using dynamic panel data and finite mixture model estimation techniques on the total sample and subsamples stratified by country income level. The results suggest that countries benefit differently from increasing Internet use and the magnitude of the effect depends on the income level of the country. In low income countries, additional Internet use has a significant positive effect on per capita GDP and overall welfare, as measured by the HDI. Increasing Internet use has a significant positive effect on all four measures of economic development in countries that have achieved middle income status. Since Internet use affects economic development outcomes differently depending on the income level of the country, the policy recommendations must also vary according to the country's income level.

Abstract:
This thesis has a three-fold goal: (1) it aims to contribute to studies which analyze the gender dimension in social shaping studies of technology; (2) in its emphasis on the Internet and the new information infrastructure it is a complement to the literature in communication studies on the gendering of communication technologies; and (3) it adds to emergent theories of virtual communities by positing how gendered practices and gender-related activities have influenced the emergence of social policy mores in the evolving information infrastructure.
In emphasizing the social factors that shape technological change the thesis departs from dominant approaches towards technology that typically study the "affects" or "impact" of technology on society. This thesis similarly responds to the gender-perspective gap that exists in sociotechnical studies, and enlarges the scope of gender studies through its consideration of emergent information and communication technologies, notably the Internet. How the social mores of virtual communities have been influenced and affected by and through a consideration of gender and gendered practices on the Internet forms a core component of the thesis, based upon case studies.
As this thesis argues, new information and communication technologies must be considered in relation to other communication technologies, as well as in relation to the social context in which they are designed, developed and used, including the often unarticulated social assumptions of various groups, and the unanticipated consequences of the new information infrastructure. In this sense, social scientists are now at a key turning point in their explorations of new information and communication technologies.
This thesis should be of significance to communication scholars interested in the history and theory of gender and communication technologies; social historians of technology, and feminist scholars, with an interest in a gendered perspective on new communication technologies; and public policy officials interested in how different groups of individuals will interact with, influence, and be affected by new communication and information technologies.

Abstract:

The subject of the thesis is to examine what communication tools the students of Kungsmadskolan in Växjö uses to communicate on the Internet and what are the motives that lie behind this choice and continued use. The thesis focus on five groups of communication tools: chat, Internet forum, community, Internet telephony and e-mail. The purpose of the study is to investigate and understand the motive that lies behind the choice of Internet-based communication tools done by high school students. We have chosen a qualitative method to conduct our research. We have collected empirical data through discussions with two focus groups divided into one with only boys and one with only girls from Kungsmadskolan in Växjö. We then analyze this data and draw conclusions from it. Prior to the focus group discussions, we created a theoretical framework. This framework has been used to steer and support the discussions and as a theoretical support in our analysis. The framework consists of five parts: communication, communication tools, motivation, choice and acceptance. Through this study we have been able to establish that the most important influence on the students choice of communication tools comes from their friends. This means that the strongest motivation to their choice comes from the search for social communion. Communication tools that the students use are: MSN, Flashback.com, Forumet.nu, Fuska.nu, Bilddagboken.se, Lunarstorm, Community.se, Helgon.nu, Facebook, Hotmail, school-mail, work-mail and Spraymail.

This thesis presents Community Knowledge Sharing (CKS), an Internet-enabled asynchronous messaging system designed for use in the developing world. The system is motivated by a desire to expand the benefits of network connectivity deeply into rural areas, breaking down barriers within and between communities. Recognizing that large segments of the population in rural communities have low levels of literacy, CKS implements a multi-literate design in which the system can be customized based on the abilities and preferences of the user. Three research areas are explored. The primary research area is to understand whether multi-literate interfaces can expand access to technology. Second, the study explores concerns that users of the system hire around security and trust. Third, the study identifies the types of information used and demanded by a sample user group. An evaluation of CKS has been conducted in Bohechio, an agricultural town in the Dominican Republic. Participants were drawn to cover a range of ages, educational backgrounds and literacy skill levels. With regards to multi-literacy and access, it is found that low literate users prefer iconic interfaces, speech synthesis is not effective, and literate users are willing to create text and audio content. On security and trust, the study finds that in the context of networked message systems rural people have different security requirements, and need to trust both the communications channel and content. Lastly, in discussions on information it is found that health, news, commercial and family information is in the greatest use and greatest demand in the community. CKS is a modest first step at developing an appropriate messaging environment for the developing world. Policy recommendations are drawn to inform future technology design and evaluation efforts. Developers of information technologies for use in the developing world should design iconic interfaces for low literate users, not rely on speech synthesis technologies, collaborate with communities, and balance cost, security and accessibility in their technology design. Evaluation of these technologies should take a longer-term approach in order to ensure that participants understand the application being tested.

Abstract:
Outsourcing, consolidation and cost savings of IT services, are increasingly becoming an imperative source of competitive advantage and a great challenge for most local and global businesses. These challenges not only affect consumers, but also the service providers’ community. As IT is slowly becoming commoditised, consumers, such as business organisations, are increasingly expecting IT services that will mimic other utility services such as water, electricity, and telecommunications. To this end, no one model has been able to emulate these utilities in the computing arena.Cloud Computing is the recent computing phenomenon that attempts to be the answer to most business IT requirements. This phenomenon is gaining traction in the IT industry, with a promise of advantages such as cost reduction, elimination of upfront capital outlay, pay per use models, shared infrastructure, and high flexibility allowing users and providers to handle high elasticity of demand. The critical success factor that remains unanswered for most IT organisations and its management is: What is the effect of the communication network factors on Internet based technology such as Cloud Computing, given the emerging market context. This study therefore, investigates the effect of four communication network factors (price, availability, reliability and security) in the adoption of Cloud Computing by IT managers in a South African context, including their propensity to adopt the technology. The study investigates numerous technology adoption theories, in which Technology, Organisation and Environment (TOE) framework is selected due to it having an organisational focus as opposed to an individual focus.Based on the results, this study proposes that Bandwidth (Pricing and Security) should be included into any adoption model that involves services running on the Internet. The study makes an attempt to contribute to the emerging literature of Cloud Computing, Internet in South Africa, in addition to offering organisations considering adoption and Cloud Providers’ significant ideas to consider for Cloud Computing adoption.

Abstract:
The user of internet sites of the french university libraries can only note the very great heterogeneity of the portals which are offered to him. They as well have as a whole a great diversity on the plan of their design as on that of the contents. Our assumption is that their originators obviously miss reference which directs the development of the portals of the university libraries towards a specific model of information and communication. This report led us to devote the present study at this question with for objective trying to determine a whole of criteria of evaluation, some principles of ergonomics, as well as the functionalities most necessary, in our opinion, for an effective design of the portals of university library. Moreover, we tried to present a diagram of the various components of a university portal of library preceding an exhaustive model to recommend. The study undertaken within the framework of this research wants to be exhaustive. It is founded on the examination of all the portals of common services of documentation and the french university libraries, with the number of eighty-five. We wondered systematically about their principles of construction, on the types of contents which they propose; we systematically tried to evaluate their degree of effectiveness in comparison of the access to the documentary resources and the quality of the associated services

Abstract:
Individuals in society are responsible for a sustainable consumption and making choices thatpromote the use of eco-friendly resources. This can be achieved through the purchasing ofenvironmentally friendly products. However, it is important that the companies clearly statethe environmental message to their customers. Marketing on the internet could be seen as agood way to reach the mass market, but the low advertising efficiency may impact revenue. Therefore, companies should consider how to best utilize digital marketing.Based on previous research, flaws have been identified regarding essential aspects ofmarketing green products on the internet. The purpose of this study is therefore to answer andincrease the understanding about which marketing aspects that can be crucial when acompany markets their eco-friendly products, using the internet as a communication tool. Byusing a qualitative method, a case study was performed at a Swedish company that sellsenvironmentally friendly shopping-bags which are marketed on the internet. Two semistructuredinterviews with the company’s founders comprise the empirical material of thisstudy. The compiled interview material has then been analysed using existing theories on thesubject as a starting point.Based on the analysis, five crucial marketing aspects of eco-friendly products on theinternet have been identified. The results show that a web page is a decisive factor when thecompany has trouble marketing their environmentally friendly products in other electronicways. They go on to show that targeted groups, with an environmental awareness or otherpurchase behaviour in mind, is another crucial aspect. Further, the company should use alight-hearted, honest and varied message in marketing of existing products signifying apositive change in eco-friendliness. Finally, adhering to environmental rules and regulationsand emphasizing this on the internet is essential. This study has contributed to an increased understanding of the vital aspects of marketingenvironmentally friendly products on the internet. Further research might study similarcompanies to compare the results.

Abstract:
Social media has become increasingly important in peoples life's these last years. It has been debated whether or not it has even been one of the main tools of radical social changes in some countries. Most of what has been written concerns corporations and ground-breaking protests, and very little has been written about the use of social media in non-profit organisations and less violent social movements. The goal of this study is to research the use of social media in modern social movements. Is there any particular reasons behind their choice of social media to use? Do different social movements use social media in different ways? To answer these questions people from Klimataktion and Transition Sweden, two modern social movements, have been interviewed. They both share the same goal, to stop climate change, but they work in different ways. Klimataktion wants to influence politicians while Transition Sweden works to change society from below, by engaging individuals in making the transition to a more environmentally friendly life. The social networks of the two movements have been mapped using Issue Crawler and compared to those of older and more established movements. Both Klimataktion and Transition Sweden uses social media to a large extent. Klimataktion places emphasis on spreading their message to the general public and on telling their members about manifestations and other activities arranged by the movement. Transition Sweden focuses on communication between members and helping them find kindred spirits and people to work with in their neighbourhood. The social networks of these movements are quite similar but differs from those of older, more established movements. It is obvious that the differences in organisation and structure of these movements has affected their use of social media, and there are clear differences between them. A social network takes time to build, even on the Internet, which shows when Klimataktions and Transition Swedens networks are compared to those of older movements. More research is needed in order to draw general conclusions that are applicable to all modern social movements and not just the two in this study.

Abstract:
Cloud computing (CC) may be the most significant development in recent history for businesses seeking to utilize technology. However, the adoption of CC hinges on many factors, and can have a greater positive impact on organizational performance. This study examined the different factors that contribute to the resistance to CC adoption. Anchored in The Theory of Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE), the study used a qualitative, grounded theory approach to develop a theoretical model for the acceptance of CC across firms. CC can have significant effects on efficiency and productivity for firms, but these effects will only be realized if IT usage becomes utilized globally. Thus, it was essential to understand the determinants of IT adoption, which was the goal of this research. The central research question involved understanding and examining the factors of resistance that contribute to cloud computing adoption across firms. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 22 chief information officers (CIOs) of various firms, including those considered technology companies (TCs) and those considered non-technology companies (NTCs). Data was analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis to determine what factors influence the adoption of CC systems and, moreover, to determine what factors create resistance to the adoption of CC in firms despite its well-documented advantages and benefits. Additionally, by examinging and focusing on the factors of resistance, the rsults of this study were generalized across a wider array of firms located in the Southeastern region of the US. A total of 12 categories were identified. These were organized into two groups. The core category being financial risks represented the probability of loss inherent in financing methods which may impair the ability to provide adequate return. The categories lack of knowledge, resistance to change, excessive cost to adopt, and cost saving fit under financial risks. Together these categories were indicators of the factors of resistance to adopt cloud computing technology. The core category security risks represented the overall perception of privacy in online environment. The categories process of research, accessing organization fit, perceived security risks, phased deployment, approval to adopt, and increase flexibility fit under security risks. Together these categories were direct indicators of the factors of resistance that contribute to the adoption of cloud computing technology by both TC and NTC. The result of this study showed that the predominant and critical factors of resistance that contribute to cloud computing adoption by TC were financial risks and security risks vs. security risks by NTC. A critical distinction between TC and NTC is that 86.4% of NTC’s participants did not care about cost, they only cared about data security. A model was subsequently developed based on the lived experiences of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) who have been faced with challenges regarding cloud acceptance, and cloud computing adoption. The theoretical model produced by this study may guide future researchers and enhance the understanding and implementation of cloud computing technologies. The results of this study will add to the body of literature and may guide companies attempting to implement cloud computing to do so more successfully.
