Master of Science
Family Studies and Human Services
Joyce Baptist
The present study examined whether married individuals hold boundaries for online social networking and the relationship between these boundaries and relational trust and satisfaction. Participants included 205 married individuals who had been married for an average of 27 years. Five specific boundaries were identified and tested using group comparison (by sex) structural equation modeling. This thesis explores pro-anorexia, a desire amongst some anorexics to maintain or even enhance their existing illness. Through ethnographic fieldwork in an English eating disorders unit and with participants to pro-anorexia websites this anthropological research centrally explores relationships between personhood and illness as they are articulated and experienced by anorexic informants. Without assuming pro-anorexic desire to be either fully agential of just a product of the illness itself, the thesis traces the ebb and flow of informants’ desires for anorexia and the selves, bodies and anore

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates ways of supporting parents in managing youth's social media use. I present empirical evidence of the challenges parents face in managing youth technology use. I then translate these results into the design and deployment of ParentNet, a community-based online social network for middle school parents to keep up with changes in technology. This dissertation provides new insights into the opportunities and challenges in conducting HCC research with a particular demographic, parents and youth. At the heart of addressing the research topic is the concept of selfefficacy, which is explored as a key component of human motivation and behaviour. Public participation processes are touted as an effective way to increase the capacity and legitimacy of policy making. Yet the focus in the public participation literature is primarily on issues of design, assuming a neutral, unbiased public that can be inserted into any public participation process. Consequently, attention is rarely given to who gets to participate in such processes. Recent changes to the Canadian environmental assessment process, an environmental decision making process with a strong public participation component, raise critical questions about who gets to participate.

This dissertation explores the implications of borders and boundaries for how forcibly displaced young Georgians from Abkhazia understand issues of belonging and return. My theoretical framework draws from theories on home and belonging as well as theories on border and boundary making, and locates them in geographies of uncertainty – or riskscapes – areas characterized by conflict and/or inequality. Empirical data was collected through two sets of interviews in Zugdidi near the border to Abkhazia and a questionnaire survey in Zugdidi and the capital Tbilisi. These data have been analysed thro

Essay 1: An Examination of the Efficiency, Foreclosure, and Collusion Rationales for Vertical Takeovers We investigate the efficiency, foreclosure, and collusion rationales for vertical integration using a large sample of vertical takeovers. The efficiency rationale posits that vertical integration prevents future holdup between non-integrated suppliers and customers. In contrast, the foreclosure and collusion rationales suggest that vertical integration harms competition.

Effects of mould flux contaminant on scale-steel adhesion and hydraulic descaling of scale formed on slabs were investigated. In this investigation, stainless steel type 304 (austenitic with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and specific mould fluxes were used when growing the scale on contaminated samples under simulated industrial reheating conditions, with subsequent high pressure water hydraulic descaling. The basic hypothesis was that the steel-scale adhesion depends on the microstructure of different phases present in the scale, the segregation of specific elements at the interface and the interfacial m
