Full textAn Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system must necessarily deal with the time component. Excluding the possibility of predicting a seismic event, the only action currently possible is sending an alert to targets further away from the nucleation point before the arrival of the most destructive waves. To this end, it is possible to exploit the different propagation speed of seismic waves in the ground compared to the propagation speed of transmitting information, and to make the use of modern technologies. Therefore, this thesis presents the study, development and experimental test of network architectures for the Internet of Things (IoT) and their integration with Cloud systems for rapid warning in the event of an earthquake. After analyzing the delays added by each component of an EEW system, we work on a part of the system architecture with the aim of branching out the alerts in a shorter time than the current ones. The use of different transmission protocols compared to international standards, the use of different identification and localization techniques, has shown how it is possible to reduce the total detection time, and consequently the alert, by about 3 seconds. The modularity of the proposed architecture allows its integration into current seismic networks and it is also applicable in other scenarios, such as structural monitoring, or in the case of rapid alert following a variety of natural events, such as those related to hydrogeological instability.

Full textIndustry 4.0 is a concept describing the implementation of Industrial cyber-physical systems in modern industries, also defined “smart industries”. With Industry 4.0 a wide set of technologies is intended: Internet of things, cloud computing, data analytics, distributed control systems, advanced robotics, artificial intelligence. Major barriers for the rapid and widespread adoption of these new technologies in SMEs are represented by the technical background required to operators, the time to learn new methodologies and technologies and the costs. The purpose of this PhD thesis is to describe the role of Systems Engineering in the Industry 4.0, to enable a structured approach for product development when these technologies are required for the applications in scope. The focus of the research is on the cross-domain methodology based on model-driven design applied to distributed applications, increasingly relevant as they are the basis of IoT systems and decentralized control systems. These technologies are well suited also for the flexibility and scalability they offer in case of lean/iterative project management methodologies like Agile, SaFE. The thesis presents an E2E approach consisting of: Requirements elicitation and management, System Architecture design, Software design, Verification and Validation methodologies, KPI definition for analysing technical success of the application. The technologies analysed and deepened in this thesis are industrial multi-agent systems, data analytics leveraging also on Artificial Intelligence and Natural language processing, data presentation and IoT networks, both with standard internet protocols and low level, energy-optimized, communication protocols. For each topic discussed in the thesis, a review of current state of the art, leveraging on recent articles and papers of scientific relevance, and a technical use case developed and validated in laboratory are presented. The technical use cases are all based on requirements coming from Industrial needs, to keep the concreteness for the design and validation process. The domains verified with the technical use cases are: Automation Engineering, Software Engineering and Smart infrastructure engineering. Finally, purpose of this thesis is also to provide ideas and suggest room for improvement or further study for each topic, with the aim to create an entry point for deepening on related issues for researchers in the Software and Automation community.

Full textThe societal context of today is shaped by two coexisting tendencies: technology-push and application-pull. The former is the emergence and rapid evolution and application of innovative technologies, in the realm of ICT (like IoT) and Data Analysis (like Artificial Intelligence, Machine and Deep Learning). The latter tendency is the trend of the market of today, built on requirements like low-cost, high-tech, customized, easily accessible, and so on so forth. Thanks to these coexisting and synergistic tendencies, the entire society is rapidly passing to the next level (hence Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 paradigms). The reasoning that allowed this rapid evolution, has been the comprehension of the fact that making decisions based on real information extracted from the complex reality we live in, allows improvements in terms of costs, time, and quality. In almost every context, having good systems that allow the passage from raw actual data collected to meaningful knowledge is the key for success. From an architectural point of view, there are three main levels that allow the creation of knowledge and wisdom from the reality: acquisition, communication, and analytic. Innovation in either one or multiple levels is essential for the development of the worldwide community. This thesis presents several innovative contributions and technological explorations, belonging to either one or multiple levels, mostly focused in the realm of Industry 4.0 practices, like Condition-Based Maintenance, and Machine Vision Systems, and Society 5.0 practices, like e-Health devices and Visual-IoT systems for flood management in smart cities. IoT and AI technological paradigms have been deeply analysed from both a theoretical and practical point of view. Through their application in several research activities, each focused on specific aspects, the final aim of developing a broad and comprehensive understanding has been achieved. IoT is a revolutionary paradigm, which spans the three levels between raw data and meaningful knowledge, thus being a complex topic to deal with comprehensively. AI is an essential enabler for making IoT's impact tangible, and AI methodologies and techniques are diversified and complex too. For this reason, a bottom-up approach has been adopted, starting from a variety of real cases focused on a specific level, and each addressed rigorously applying the scientific method of research, global and adaptable knowledge about IoT and AI has been extracted. The sources of use cases have been private companies, National and International research projects, committed to Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 paradigms, as will be presented. Specifically, the following research activities will be presented: an e-Health system based on wearable sensors, an IoT system for real-time building monitoring, a cross-protocol proxy for sensors networks, a Machine Vision algorithm for counting manually assembled pieces, a ML-based model for assessing the health status of a cartesian robot's drive belt, a ML-based model able to assess the health of an injection moulding machine based on process parameters collected by widespread sensors, an OCR-based system able to suggest maintenance intervention for painting robot's number plates, a Computer Vision solution for monitoring the water level of rivers through a camera framing the gauge, and a dynamic energy consumption rationing model for oil refining plants. By addressing more or less specific real cases centered on IoT and AI, it has been possible to understand architectural and software possibilities and peculiarities of the two paradigms. These wide variety of possibilities should be tuned in order to satisfy as better as possible context and task-specific requisites. Concluding, IoT and AI can benefit each other by the strict interconnection into the edge-AI paradigm, which together with in-network and cloud computing, have been found essential for the future successful achievement of smarter society.

Full textThe research activity focused on environmental and human monitoring systems. As regards environmental monitoring, Smart Objects have been studied and developed for the Internet of Things capable of creating widespread networks of sensors to be used in seismic monitoring for the purpose of Earthquake Early Warning. The goal was to analyze and compare the performance of a set of low-cost accelerometer sensors in order to increase the density of the monitoring network and thus increase the efficiency of early warning in case of earthquakes. Still, with a view to creating Early Warning Systems, it was studied how to create a data acquisition and analysis infrastructure for rapid warning in the event of floods with the aim of developing a platform capable of acquiring sensor data distributed throughout the territory, process the information collected by civil protection volunteers and automate the processes of modeling the stage-discharges curves for estimating the discharges of rivers. In this way, at each level value recorded by the hydrometric sensors, the corresponding estimate of the flow rate can be obtained without having to go to measure it every time. The study of issues related to the development of human activity monitoring systems, based on inertial units, has led to the evaluation of the use of these sensors in biomedical applications. In this context, a Wireless Body Sensor Network was developed consisting of an inertial unit for identifying the flexion angle of the back and sensors for the acquisition of surface electromyography signals of the back muscles. The goal was to evaluate the presence or absence of a physiological phenomenon called Flexion-Relaxation Phenomenon statistically present in most healthy subjects who do not have low back pain. The research focused on the creation of a system capable of processing the different types of signals in order to obtain parameters to identify and quantify the phenomenon in an objective, automatic, and highly reliable manner.
