Observing the increasing use of Internet devices in the political mobilizations of the early 21st century, it is noted that social movements have changed and started to use other means and resources to influence their policies in the public sphere. Understanding this is a global phenomenon and, especially since the 2013 June Jouneys, it also occurs in Brazil, this research sought to understand how social movements use cyberactivism to include their demands in the arenas of Brazilian institutional politics. For this, a case study of the political mobilization on the Internet was carried out in favor of the Ficha Limpa “Clean Record” analyzing the publications that the members of the Movement to Combat Electoral Corruption, performed in the Community of Orkut MCCE Ficha Limpa and the sites that were cited as source of information by the members of the same. In order to qualify the data collected through the mapping and the bibliographical survey, in-depth interviews were conducted with individuals belonging to the National Committee of the Ficha Limpa Campaign, members of the Orkut Community, and with the Avaaz Campaign Coordinator at the time. Through this analysis, it can be verified that cyberactivism contributed to the inclusion of new guidelines in the political arena, but, on the other hand, that it is not the only who guarantees the success of the movement

The progress of mankind has always depended on the creative capacity of man. In the beginning of civilization, knowledge was transmitted orally, from person to person, and occasionally was lost. Technology, regarded as new tools and gadgets, has allowed the democratization of knowledge. Thus, literary works experienced a huge revolution, with the invention of typography by Gutenberg; later, they faced the menace of photocopiers, and, now, audiobooks (spoken-word works) and eBooks (books available for download on the Internet) coexist with printed works. Songs have come from live sessions to LP, then to cassette tapes until they came to be listened to on CD and, nowadays, downloaded from the Internet in MP3 format. This growing technological evolution has provided the basis for the rise of a new society, the information society . We are living the revolution of computers, Internet, and mass media. We term this scene digital era , i.e., the society marked by the digital revolution and widespread information sharing, whose fundamental tools are the computer and the means of communication. In this scene, evidenced by the turning of atoms in bits, this study presents reflections on the impact of the Internet on copyrights. Through facts, technical data, and juridical aspects, we try to trace a panorama of our times, facing the main questions concerned with this theme coming from the premise that considering copyrights on the Internet is essential not only for their survival, but mainly for incentivating creators to create more and more, contributing for the growing development of our society

This research debates the excess of worldwide available computational resources with exceeded processing capacity and also how the utilization of the sharing and collaboration concepts influence the integration of those devices to constitute an economic environment with high processing capacity. Currently, it is possible to find a great amount of personal computers, servers and others devices that show high level of idleness, while they could be being used for another purpose, once there are many scientific researches, collaborative projects and digital inclusion programs that are short of resources to reach theirs objectives. The Grid Computing technology was conceived as an alternative to integrate geographically distributed resources pertaining to different domains, enabling a decentralized computational environment. The main objective of this research is to analyze how this technology can generate benefits to the social, environment and economic contexts. In the social approach, Grid Computing stimulates the collaboration and the sharing of computational resources and applications, as well as providing features that are very useful for data transparency between many domains. Those characteristics are also important for the scientific inclusion. The first Case Study approaches the importance of Grid Computing for the collaborative tasks found in the scientific project of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which allowed many research institutions and universities around the world to build a shared computational environment of large scale for processing the data generated by LHC. In the environment context, this technology also presents some characteristics to make the computational resources more energy efficient increasing the use of its computational capacities. The second Case Study analyzes the data related to the amount of personal computers connected in the Internet and how to implement Grid Computing based on the Volunteer Computing model to make those computers more productive with no relevant impact in the energy consumption. This research also highlights the synergy between Grid Computing and Cloud Computing, its financial advantages and the generation of new business models based on the commercialization of platform and software as a service in the Internet. The third Case Study analyzes a Cloud Computing model that delivers computational resources (such as a whole server) as a service, enabling a scenario where companies and people could contract a computational environment with a quick provisioning with no need to purchase equipments and to invest in implementation projects. Finally, it is possible to appoint both technologies as relevant trends for the coming years, which can be an influence to generate new software models, platforms and services focused in the Internet

The present study has as its object the autonomy of the Labor Law in the context of the Information Revolution. The thesis It aims to prove, through the deductive method, the power of knowledge workers and their ability to rebuild the trade union movement as in its origin, that is, truly emancipatory and against hegemonic. Collective struggles in recent centuries have become merely vindictive, especially with the advent of the welfare state. The Information Revolution has subverted the Fordist capitalist paradigm, and in this scenario new actors have emerged that play the game of forces between capital and labor. The class struggle, based on syndicalism of a workers' character, no longer responds to the aspirations of the workers of post-fordist society, who must adapt to the new social context in order to reestablish its strength. To this end, the trade union movement must aggregate not only the knowledge workers, but also the proletariat, the unemployed and the unemployed, struck by structural unemployment, the self-employed, as well as the homeless and the landless, the-class-that-lives-of-work. The study starts from two presuppositions: the displacement of the object of this field of law, to include in it the multiple possibilities arising from information and communication technology, and the restoration of collective movements, now both reformist and revolutionary characters; Finally reveals that this theoretical-dogmatic reconfiguration will only be possible, insofar as the postulate of autonomy is highlighted, due to the attacks and threats that global ultraliberalism has been imposing on Labor Law.

Abstract:

The study goes through the history of development of the Internet, the concept of youth, brings also the conceptions of education, cultural capital and post modernity, to facilitate our understanding of the relationship between young people and social networks of the internet. As a final point, guided by the survey methodology and the discourse analysis, we launched our eye on the most shared images on Facebook during the months of protests. We understand that the photographic discourse, the idea of leafleting and superficiality in the discussion of the themes are strong features of this social phenomenon, which was able to mobilize millions of people and has made society more open to discuss the possibilities that the internet offers to the contemporary world

Abstract:
The changes that took place in the media over the last few years, together with technological progress, have been responsible for new types of consumer behavior. The focus of brand communication evolved from a purely company-oriented approach to the establishment of a new type of relationship between the brand and the consumer, which created the Prosumer. The presence of Social Networks and the important role their platforms play in our lives allows this kind of proximity and, mainly, this kind of interactivity. On Social Networks, the users share aspects of their professional and personal life, as well as their concerns, preoccupations and states of mind. Brands benefit from these platforms and there are good (and bad) practices which allows them to find the best solution for the company's specific goals. This study focuses on finding a profile for the Portuguese Social Network user and aims at understanding the relationship between the consumer and the brand though word of mouth marketing and its effects on sales as a result of the brand's presence in Social Networks.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Desenvolvimento e Cooperação Internacional
As novas tecnologias, designadamente a Internet e o Comércio Electrónico, impuseram à sociedade novos valores, atitudes, modelos económicos e formas de estar completamente diferentes.
The new technologies, namely the Internet and the electronic commerce imposed to society new values, attitudes, economic models and totally different ways of conduct. The Internet levelled the competition game, opening doors to small enterprises now able to extend their geographical areas and target new markets and new clients, normally reserved to bigger enterprises. The civil society found in the Internet a never-ending fount of information and in the electronic commerce a comfortable way of moving and bring to itself everything it needs taking half of the time that usually is needed. The world and particularly Portugal have been the targets of deep impacts since the appearance and development of the new technologies. This work will identify the exact location of those impacts and uncover in the economic and social field, which benefits, changes and conducts have been adopted or created and lastly draw the technological Portuguese society shape.

Abstract:
Presented through the lens of the Theory of Relative Deprivation (Tajfel & Turner, 1986), this thesis aims to establish and quantify the link between inaccessibility in online contexts for people with low-vision or blindness, and the psychosocial impacts that may be associated with this inaccessibility. As there is existing research on this topic with elderly participants (Lagacé, Charmarkeh, Zaky, & Firzly, 2016), the focus for this research was working-aged people. The following research questions were addressed: 1) Does perceived lack of internet accessibility lead to perceptions of unfairness among low-vision or blind individuals? 2) In turn, do perceptions of unfairness negatively impact their level of self-esteem, and civic engagement? The hypothesized results were modeled as lower levels of perceived access lead to lower levels of perceived fairness, which in turn, lower the levels of civic engagement and self- esteem. Using a sample of 69 participants between the ages of 21-65, a self-report questionnaire was administered. It was found that perceived fairness was correlated on three of four scale items with self-esteem levels; the perception of fairness was not correlated with civic engagement; civic engagement and self-esteem were significantly correlated; and perceived access was correlated with levels of self-esteem.

The present study examined whether married individuals hold boundaries for online social networking and the relationship between these boundaries and relational trust and satisfaction. Participants included 205 married individuals who had been married for an average of 27 years. Five specific boundaries were identified and tested using group comparison (by sex) structural equation modeling. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed two latent constructs for internet boundaries: Openness (3 items: Know Friends, Share Passwords and Account Access) and Fidelity (2 items: No Flirting and No Former Partners). Findings suggest that couples in long-term committed relationships have boundaries or rules for social networking. Furthermore, trusting one’s partner, but not relationship satisfaction, contributes to behaviors that reflect sharing online social networking information, and curb online flirting and relationships with former romantic partners. Trust was more strongly associated with men’s than women’s motivation to avoid flirtatious online interaction and communicating with former romantic partners online. These findings that indicate that the use of internet boundaries is highly related to marital trust support the development theory of trust.

The Internet has emerged as a prominent medium of communication. Today, it has become the focus of enormous debate and evaluation. The objective of this study is to examine the evolution of its impact on society. In this regard, various interpretations of its societal impact are provided. First, the debate on the information society exhibits the widespread belief that society is transforming and a new type of society is emerging. Second, a chronological description of the evolution and development of the Internet displays its burgeoning growth and current utility and capacities. Third, optimistic and pessimistic perspectives elucidate opposite views of the potential it can have on society and humankind. Lastly, a synchronic analysis of media coverage, using The Globe and Mail as an illustration, demonstrates the present reporting of its impact. These various interpretations provide an understanding of the Internet's increasing significance and position within society.

The Information Society has been changed by the Technological Revolution and its main element: Internet, which leads to the revision of the traditional social and legal standards, such as the sovereignty and international players, facing the virtual reality challenges. The Internet is an international public good or an space with no borders that reaches all mankind. The Internet Governance claims that all countries set a consensus about the cyberspace having multiple sovereignties but none in particular, such as the Sea Convention (Montego-Bay Agreement). The Internet Governance mechanisms includes technical (Internet standards and protocols), social (social boundaries, virtual communities, digital divide), economical (electronic commerce, technology access), legal, and others. The Internet Governance players are: governments, private sector, civil society and international organizations. This research has the objective to discuss the sovereignty concept all the way through the history of Internet Governance mechanisms. The methodology concerns the bibliographical review. The scientific literature available is short, due to the fact that Internet is a recent phenomenon. Data resources are documents from the international events (World Summit on Information Society and Internet Governance Forum); Internet governance organizations (Internet Engineering Task Force and ICANN); and interviews with Internet specialists. In conclusion, there is no break face the actual sovereignty concept, although there is some new characteristics such as the multistakeholder participation throughout the soft law

Abstract:

Modic, David. "Willing to be scammed : how self-control impacts Internet scam compliance." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/8044.

Full text
Abstract:
At any given moment in time, there are people complying with fraudulent requests (i.e. scams) on the Internet. While the incidence rates are low (between five and ten percent of the population becoming victims on a yearly basis), the financial and emotional consequences can be high. In this Thesis we composed a unified theory of which factors made individuals more likely to comply with scams and what psychological mechanisms are unwittingly employed by con-men to make their (illegitimate marketing) offers more enticing. The strongest overall predictor of scam compliance (i.e. the extent to which an individual is likely to comply with fraudulent requests) was the level of self-control, regardless of the observed stage of a scam. On the basis of previous research, we postulated and have empirically shown that falling for a scam is a 3-stage process (i.e. assessing a scam to be plausible - plausiblity, responding to scammers - responded and, finally, losing utility to them – lost out). Taking this paradigm into account, we analysed the three stages in separate investigations and tested the viability of various psychological factors that play a role in them. We hypothesized that attitudes towards risky choices would play a role in finding an Internet scam plausible and thus started our investigation by transferring one of the classic economic psychological theories (i.e. Prospect Theory) into a virtual setting and demonstrated that risk preferences remain unchanged between concrete and virtual settings. Our investigation showed that attitudes towards risk are similar across virtual and concrete domains, but did not yield a reliable psychometric scale measuring risk preferences. As a corollary, in Chapter 3, we investigated psychological mechanisms that influence risky preferences as applied to all three stages of scam compliance. The empirical investigation in Chapter 3 of the present Thesis focused on social psychological mechanisms of persuasion. A scale of susceptibility to persuasion was developed, validated and then applied to the phenomena of scam compliance in two studies. Four reliable factors contributing to susceptibility to persuasion emerged: influence of authority, social influence, self-control and the need for consistency. The susceptibility to persuasion scale was then used to predict overall lifetime (study 1) and time-limited (study 2) scam compliance across the three stages of scams. Social Influence weakly predicted the plausibility stage in study 1, while strongly predicting the response stage in study 2. The need for consistency strongly predicted response stages in both studies. While compliance with requests from authorities did not predict responses to any of the stages in study 1, it weakly predicted the plausibility of a scam and strongly predicted responding to it in study 2. Weak self-control was a significant predictor of losing funds in study 1 and a strong predictor of responding to scams in study 2. As lack of self-control (as a personality trait) emerged as one of the significant predictors of scam compliance, this led us to infer that there were other personality traits that would contribute to understanding scam compliance. That became the topic of Chapter 4 of the present Thesis. In Chapter 4, we used the five factor model of personality, a brief self-control scale and the UPPS impulsive behaviour scale to measure the impact of personality traits on scam compliance in the response stage. Results showed that extraversion, openness, self-control, premeditation, sensation seeking and (negative) urgency had an influence on the response rates to fraudulent offers. Lack of self-control (as a personality trait) again emerged as a strong predictor of overall scam compliance, which led us to infer that self-control as a cognitive state would also contribute to measuring scam compliance in general and in specific types of fraud. The investigation reported in Chapter 3 showed fraudulent Internet auctions to be an effective scam. As a consequence of these two findings, in Chapter 5, we investigated the impact of self-regulatory fatigue on compliance with fraudulent Internet auctions. In the empirical investigation in Chapter 5 180 respondents in two groups were exposed to a cognitive task designed to be ego-depleting and then to a constructed fraudulent Internet auction. They were asked a series of questions concerned with the likelihood of them purchasing a desired item (i.e. the third stage of a scam) and its appeal to them. We found no evidence that lowered self-control (as a state) had any impact on the appeal of fraudulent offer or the likelihood of purchasing it. We also demonstrated that the perception of risk in the fraudulent Internet auctions is most strongly influenced by the feedback mechanisms and the sellers’ ability to use correct English. In the conclusion to the present Thesis we discussed the implications of our empirical investigations and constructed a fictional fraudulent offer that would be effective according to our research. It should, for example, be based on the advance fee schemes and should be delivered over the Internet to reach the most potential victims. Once we had created an outline of an effective scam, we used that as our starting point to suggest mechanisms that would be effective in resisting it. For example, individuals could employ heuristics in a better way or conduct reality checks; and software toolkits that would help in resisting scams could be developed on the basis of our findings. We also discussed future research directions (obtaining larger samples, focusing on specific types of scams and specific populations; and others) and general implications of our findings.

Abstract:
This study combined quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the relationship between Internet use and identity, particularly age-identity, in older Internet users. It has a theoretical basis in symbolic interactionism – particularly the theories of Erving Goffman – and conceptualizes identities as roles that are negotiated during social interaction. The focus on older users was motivated by the strong focus of prior Internet research on younger users. Few studies have examined older users specifically, and fewer still have examined age-identity. Thus, the focus in this study is on how changes in social interaction that occur due to Internet use affect the identity negotiation process. The research is focused around two key areas: whether older users experience the same kinds of online identity processes as younger users, and the impact exposure to novel audiences has on identity negotiation. The study consists of two phases. In the first, a quantitative survey was administered in which a measure of age-identity was assessed and compared with measures of audience novelty. Results showed that a significant increase in variance of ageidentity is associated with communication with people from other countries. This finding supports the theory that identity is formed in negotiation with the audience with whom one communicates, and that expanding this audience may lead to identity effects. To investigate this issue more deeply, a qualitative phase was conducted in which participants were interviewed using rapid ethnography techniques, and at the conclusion of which a model of the interaction between age-identity and Internet communication was developed. This model was then verified with follow-up interviews with key informants and with field observations from sites of online social interaction among seniors. The model developed during the qualitative stage identifies three ways in which ageidentity is influenced by social interaction on the Internet. First, the Internet is used in response to emotional or practical consequences of ageing. Second, older Internet users could take advantage of the ability to manage their personal front online to achieve agelessness, and third, the Internet is used as a backstage area to discuss ageidentity issues. The context of these claims is all-important; each individual’s unique circumstances, emotions and motivations influence the way in which they will use the Internet and respond to others encountered through it. The extension of Goffman’s dramaturgical metaphor to age- identity on the Internet and to include the concept of character development, in which identity evolves over time in response to inner tensions and external events, is a tentative but powerful finding. It poses a challenge for future research into the nature of identity change, both online and offline.

Abstract:
New information and communication technologies have excited considerable popular and expert attention over the last decades of the twentieth century. Predictions about their social effects range along a continuum from visions of heaven; where people slip the surly bonds of time and space, to glimpses of hell; where such slippage enables new manifestations of dominance and control. Along the continuum there is a basic determinist premise evident, that the technologies have developed in a marginal sphere, and will now bring a new way of life, or at least provide materials for a new way of life, whether this be for good or evil. The notion of cyberspace as a new communicative domain has in particular engaged this kind of attention. This thesis is concerned with the ways in which the rhetoric of cyberspace sheds light on deeper social preoccupations and relations. It is an attempt to move beyond discussion of particular technologies and their possible effects to examine the ways in which habitual social intercourse is reconstructed in and around cyberspace. As a feminist scholar of communication I am particularly interested in the ways in which existing gender relations are maintained in discursive constructions of women in cyberspace, and the ways in which feminist theorists may respond to the new domain. Because I seek to elude simple determinism, I have sought to contextualise the space by some focus on the known social needs, purposes and practices to which the development of cyberspace technologies has been central. Although I acknowledge the power of discourse to maintain extant social relations, I seek to elude discursive determinism by some focus on the ways in which women have creatively appropriated new technologies; on the disjunctions of discourse and practice.

The Social Networks subject has gained expression on the marketing and communication strategies context, today companies need to use and be aware of new tools to communicate with their target audiences. In this context, more and more companies are using social networks, like Facebook, as a means of communication, as they use press or radio channels. Knowing the context of social networks may help companies to create and develop a close relationship with their customers. Thus this study aims to understand which factors are the most important for the engagement between brands and Facebook users. Therefore, primarily it was intended to measure the factors that led the users to become fans of a brand page on the first place, and then we tried to find out which factors impacted the most on the engagement, and which of them were the most crucial. To achieve the results for this study 191 surveys were conducted by e-mail and Facebook. The results showed that the main reasons that lead individuals to become fans of the brand pages on Facebook is the fact that the Facebook users likes the brand and the need of knowing more about the brand. About the engagement between the users and the brands, it was concluded that the factors that have most impact are recognition of the participation of the member and the communication support between users and between the users and the brand.

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore adolescents perceptions of how their use of information and communication technologies may impact on the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship. Obtaining information from adolescents on how they experience their parents interaction with them when they engage with theses technologies, can provide insight into adolescents perceptions of whether information and communication technologies impact on this relationship. This research therefore aimed to explore the way that parents interact with their adolescents on their use of the Internet, gaming activities, or regulating their use of a cell phone, and how this is perceived by adolescents.

On an Era marked by technology, major changes on the corporate world and democratization of knowledge, the appearance of the Enterprise 2.0 concept has urged the need to understand if Social Networks do in fact have a major role on the Internal Communication of Companies, thus inspiring this Masters Final Work. For the sake of clarity it was found adequate to provide a short revision of the concepts of Social Networks, Enterprise 2.0, Internal Communication and Organizational Culture. A case study was prepared regarding one company who operates on the digital communication industry, following the research questions presented in the early phase of the project and in order to test them against reality. The development of this case study looks to draw the most realistic conclusions on the impact that social networks assume on corporate internal communication. Thus, it is verified that the use of social networks within the company in analysis might have a positive impact on its internal communication and, consequently, on the correspondent organizational culture, if it obeys a consistent strategy and if it benefits from the incentive of the company's decision-makers. This case study makes it clear for companies in general that the Enterprise 2.0 concept will become an unavoidable reality on a daily bases for the present.

This research has two areas. First of all, we analyse the link between humans and machines acording to the interaction in the web 2.0 to find out if the use of Internet has enabled new capabilities that create the abstraction of a virtual proximity that generates empathy in crisis or emergencies. Furthermore, determining the role of the communication departments of the non-profit sector, and in this sense, the deeper message that the receiver searchs, finds or receives through the Internet. We do that because it serves in the virtual environment as a trigger to generate a change in the way of processing the information and it shows how the transmission channel of the information is important for the reaction of being different.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With each new innovation in technology since at least the Industrial Revolution, and probably before, optimists and pessimists have squared off in a cyclic debate over the impact of the dayâ s newest technology. Self-proclaimed futurists for centuries have attempted to foretell the impact of technology on society with varied success. The goal of this research project is to study the effect of computer network technology on the social interactions of the local community organizations in Blacksburg, VA. Online surveys filled out by the leaders and members of these organizations measure different aspects of each organization and the use and usage of Internet technology within that organization. Correlations between the two may help us identify ways technology has affected the way we communicate with one another. Are community organizations communicating more or less? If so, how? Has face-to-face interaction been forsaken in lieu of technology such as email? The effects found in the survey results should give way to meaningful discourse on how technology can best be used to aid social interaction in local organizations.

Lorenzi, Jill Elizabeth. "Young Adults' Social Interest in Complex Film Clips: Impact of Autism Characteristics." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/73412.

Full text
Abstract:
Deficits in social functioning in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be explained in part by the limited salience of or reward value associated with the social world, relative to individuals with typical development (e.g., Jones and Klin, 2008; Mundy, 1995; Mundy and Neal, 2005). However, despite many calls for the use of ecologically valid, rich, complex stimuli when investigating deficits in social attention and interest in ASD, few studies have adopted these recommendations. The current study investigated social interest in a non-clinical college student population (n = 78; 72% female; M age = 20.41 years) by analyzing participants' verbal descriptions of dynamic film clips. It was predicted that as level of self-reported ASD characteristics increased, proportions of verbal descriptions devoted to higher-level social information (e.g., relationships, mental or emotional states) would decrease, while holding self-reported social anxiety, autonomic flexibility (i.e., heart rate variability), and verbal ability constant. In other words, self-reported ASD characteristics were hypothesized to impact social interest above and beyond the effects of other predicted covariates. Results, however, did not reveal significant differences in social interest across varying levels of ASD characteristics, and neither social anxiety nor autonomic flexibility served as a moderator of this association. Variations of the current study and the inclusion of a clinical population are discussed as possible future directions to refine the study and better target intervention efforts aimed at ameliorating social deficits in ASD.

Becirevic, Annita. "News and Radio: Social Media Adoption and Integration by @RadioProducers and its Impact on Their #MediaWork." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/13430.

Full text
Abstract:
This research analyses how news talk radio program producers are using social media in their daily work practices and routines, and how doing so has impacted on their media work. Currently, the majority of scholarly attention has focused on the apparent crisis facing print media in light of continuous technological innovations in newsrooms, as a condition of media convergence. However, there has been significantly less scholarship considering how the introduction of various Internet and new media technologies has impacted on radio broadcasting. Structural transformations of the radio industry have triggered workplace shifts in news talk production that has altered the media work of radio program producers. It is therefore the aim of this thesis to explore the changing nature of radio work, and the way in which news talk radio producers adopt and integrate Internet and new media technologies into their daily work practices and routines. This research examines the use of Internet and new media technologies by three news talk program production teams within the community, commercial, and public service broadcasting sectors in order to explore how each have taken to social media in their daily workflows. Based on participant observation and semi-structured interviews with each of the radio producers, the research uses an inductive ethnographic research methodology to understand the technology access and workload challenges they are facing in developing social media skills, particularly concerning program pre-promotion and audience interaction. The research indicates that access to reliable computing technologies is a contentious issue amongst the commercial and community radio stations observed and which ultimately impacts upon the radio producers’ ability to effectively complete their daily media work. Further, the research indicates that the workload of each of the producers has increased significantly with their incorporation and adoption of social media in their daily workflows. The study suggests that further research is necessary in order to provide a more comprehensive analysis of the changing nature of media work within radio production.

Alolyan, Asma Ali. "The perceived impact of the Internet on family and social relations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2015. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/608781/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the adoption of technology and perceived changing social attitudes and relations. Specifically it considers if there have been any perceived changes in family or social relations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and, if so, can this be traced to the relatively recent shift to allow more widespread access to the internet. Traditionally the KSA has been characterised as a traditional, socially conservative society with a strong reliance on extended kinship groups. These family units have traditionally been the focus for much social interaction, especially for the female members and a regular round of face to face interaction was an important part of the social norms. The adopted research design was a variant of the mixed methods methodology. In this case a questionnaire was issued to 300 young people at two universities and one high school in Riyadh. Following this, 50 interviews were conducted. These were a mixture of some under 28 (drawn from the questionnaire sample) and those over 28 (found using purposive sampling). The research was designed to explore if the internet was perceived by respondents as having an impact due to time displacement (i.e. time spent on line was reducing face to face interaction) or in terms of any perceived changes of underlying attitudes towards the norms of Saudi society. Broadly, the findings were that there was evidence that the internet was perceived as having led to significant changes in social relations due to time displacement. However, from the interviews, it was clear that to many women in the KSA the internet offered the means to sidestep traditional restrictions on social interaction. While most reported no change in social attitudes, those with relatively heavy usage did report an impact on both acceptance of existing cultural norms and social relationship.

Ma, Yingying. "Impact of social media use on political participation : narcissism, perceived anonymity and social norms as mediators." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2019. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/677.

Full text
Abstract:
Social media use is a pivotal driver for political engagement. The present study extended previous research by exploring the simple and serial mediating roles of narcissism, perceived anonymity, descriptive norms, and subjective norms in this relationship. Structural equation modeling (SEM) with bootstrapping estimation was conducted for hypothesis testing using data from 579 Hong Kong university students. Modeling results revealed that perceived anonymity, descriptive norms, and subjective norms are significant mediators of the relationship between social media use and political participation. Moreover, descriptive norms, together with perceived anonymity, were found to mediate the relationship. Likewise, narcissism combined with descriptive norms proved to be significant mediators of the relationship. Additionally, a distal mediation effect of descriptive norms and subjective norms proved to be significant. Based on these results, a subsequent parallel mediation analysis was conducted, revealing that perceived anonymity is the most influential indicator among perceived anonymity, subjective norms, and descriptive norms of the relationship of social media use and political participation. The study concluded by comparing male and female respondents in terms of political participation. The result showed that male respondents were generally more active than female respondents in both online and offline political activities, which agrees with prior research findings. Collectively, the current study provides a new perspective from which we can further understand the effects of social media use on political engagement.

Abstract:
The thesis is structured around two contrasting narratives of the impact of the internet and social media on corporate crises created by radical activists. Briefly, the 'advancing' narrative celebrates what has been enabled for society by the internet and social media, and suggests that the influence of offline media is diminished by online technologies. The 'inflated' narrative argues that this has been overstated, and argues that, rather than flatten-out hierarchies, the internet and social media perpetuate these. The thesis combines social, political, management and CSR literatures to detail the importance of these narratives vis a vis corporate crises created by radical activists. These then guide examination of three case studies of corporate crises created by Greenpeace targeting Shell (pre-digital crisis), Nestle and Procter & Gamble (digital age crises). The thesis contributes insights into radical activists' campaigns in the digital age and shows a new campaign process. The thesis finds that citizens' participation in radical activists' campaigns has evolved and advances a new term, slacktivist salience, to reflect how they take part and their influence in these campaigns. The thesis contributes to work examining corporate responses to these types of crises and empirically shows how corporations are recalibrating their responses to take into account the communications challenges precipitated by the digital age. The thesis supports predictions that offline media would come to regard these types of crises as not newsworthy, and shows that they regard them as less newsworthy than before the emergence of the internet and social media.

The present study analysed the influence of new information and communication technologies ICT in the political participation and consciousness of the youth, using a psicosocial approach. The use of internet was used as a basis for investigating the other variables impacting in this process. The sample was of 1165 respondents from different social economic status - SES, in the metropolitan area of São, ages ranging from 13 to 30 years old, from public and private schools and non-governmental organizations (NGO). Two main hypothesis were analysed: H1 the direct and positive correlation of the generalized use of internet on the youth political participation and consciousness; and, H2 correlation of the specific use of the internet on the youth political participation and consciousness. The demographic variables analysed were: age, sex, race, SES; and the competencies: political and social interest, personal and political efficacy, trust in people and in institutions, feelings of belonging, empathy, values, and content of the internet. The final results have shown that: (H1) the generalized use of internet is not directly linked to the youth political participation and consciousness, and it is highly influenced by SES; whereas (H2) only the specific use of internet is directly connected to the political participation and consciousness of the youth
