Hu, Yu 1975. "Essays on Internet markets and information goods." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/28829.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references.
(cont.) provides explanations as to when and how incorporating them into advertising deals can be profitable. We argue that using these pricing models appropriately can give both the publisher and the advertiser proper incentives to make non-contractible efforts that may improve the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. It also allows the publisher and the advertiser to share the risk caused by uncertainty in the product market. We show that key factors that influence the use of performance-based pricing models are the importance of the publisher's incremental efforts, precision of click-through measurement, uncertainty in the product market, and risk aversion parameters. We also clarify issues that are being debated in the industry, such as how the importance of the advertiser's incremental efforts and existence of non-immediate purchases affect the use of performance-based pricing models. The third essay, "Renting versus Selling Durable Information Goods", studies whether a monopoly producer of a durable information good should sell or rent its good to consumers. We study whether the producer obtains a higher profit under a selling strategy or a renting strategy. Our analysis shows that the conventional wisdom that a durable good monopolist would always prefer renting to selling is no longer valid in the context of durable information goods, because of the existence of "individual depreciation". We find that a renting strategy leads to a higher producer surplus than a selling strategy does, when this individual depreciation parameter is high, i.e., the utility a durable information good provides to consumers decreases relatively ...
This dissertation consists of three essays on Internet markets and information goods. The first essay, "Consumer Surplus in the Digital Economy: Estimating the Value of Increased Product Variety at Online Booksellers", presents a framework and empirical estimates that quantify the economic impact of increased product variety made available through electronic markets. While efficiency gains from increased competition significantly enhance consumer surplus, for instance by leading to lower average selling prices, our present research shows that increased product variety made available through electronic markets can be a significantly larger source of consumer surplus gains. One reason for increased product variety on the Internet is the ability of online retailers to catalog, recommend and provide a large number of products for sale. For example, the number of book titles available at Amazon.com is over 23 times larger than the number of books on the shelves of a typical Barnes & Noble superstore and 57 times greater than the number of books stocked in a typical large independent bookstore. Our analysis indicates that the increased product variety of online bookstores enhanced consumer welfare by $731 million to $1.03 billion in the year 2000, which is between seven to ten times as large as the consumer welfare gain from increased competition and lower prices in this market. There may also be large welfare gains in other SKU-intensive consumer goods such as music, movies, consumer electronics, and computer software and hardware. The second essay, "Performance-based Pricing Models in Online Advertising", applies the economic theory of incentive contracts to the study of performance-based pricing models in online advertising and provides
by Yu (Jeffrey) Hu.
Ph.D.

Woody, Carol C. "Applying Security Risk Management to Internet Connectivity in K-12 Schools and School Districts." NSUWorks, 2004. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/933.

Abstract:
Internet connectivity has been added to the classrooms of United States (U.S .) K-12 schools, but recognition of the security risks and related management responsibilities to address increased risk exposure is not apparent. Providing a sufficient level of access for K-12 students to learn through exploration and experimentation needs to be balanced with sufficient limitations to minimize the risk of technically proficient participants inflicting harm through school resources. Problems of inappropriate use such as adjusting grades, tampering with work of other students, and defacing Web sites by K-12 students are already appearing in U.S. newspapers. In addition, the growing level of Internet security incidents such as worms and malicious code puts K-12 technology infrastructure and data at risk. Each K-12 school and school district has a unique set of technical capabilities that must be balanced against the risk of misuse to establish appropriate security. Applying security risk management can allow K -12 administrators to identify areas of weak security that pose unacceptable risk and plan for needed improvements. Within this investigation, a security risk methodology was selected, tailored to incorporate organizational characteristics and regulatory requirements unique to K-12 schools and school districts, and successfully applied by the Scarsdale Public School District, Scarsdale, New York. In addition, several K-12 school officials including school board members, technology directors, and superintendents, reviewed the tailored methodology and affirmed its applicability to their schools and school districts. The Operationally Critical Threat, Asset, and Vulnerability EvaluationsM (OCTA VE®) Methodology was selected by this investigator for evaluating the security risk ofK-12 schools and school districts. The OCTAVE Methodology applies a security risk management approach developed by researchers at the Carnegie Mellon® Software Engineering Institute (SElsM). The methodology is used by over 1,000 medical, financial, manufacturing, and government organizations, and allows for self-direction. It is available at no cost and provides a wide range of tailoring capabilities for adapting

Perutz, Mark A. (Mark Andrew). "An investigation of price dispersion in Internet auctions." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/9195.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2000.
Also available online on DSpace at MIT.
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 37).
It can be observed that in consumer-to-consumer on-line auctions, there is a strong degree of price dispersion, even in liquid markets with a large number of bids per auction item. This Thesis research strives to quantify such dispersion and present explanations for the key findings on the nature of price dispersion in on-line auctions of like goods: Although contrary to common sense and public opinion, I found no significant correlation of winning bid price with feedback rating. This is true for low, medium-high and high value goods and for both new and used goods. This observation holds for all ranges of feedback ratings. Of all of the other variables of an auction listing: (shipping costs, amount of opening bid, number of bids, accepted payment types, picture in listing, and the use of reserve prices), only picture in listing and use of reserve prices are correlated with winning bid price. This observation holds for all types of goods examined. However, correcting for these variables does not significantly reduce price dispersion. The majority of the dispersion in winning bid prices of same-good auctions can be explained by the unique ability of the on-line auction process to obtain the reservation prices of buyers in the market, through its use of maximum bid amounts and proxy bidding. An auction winning bid curve for a good can be constructed by aggregating the winning bid prices of all auctions of that good over a period of time. The downward sloping and isoelastic nature of this curve can be explained in part by the downward sloping demand curve for that good, made up by the range of premiums buyers are willing to pay in order to increase their chances of winning the auction, and getting the item sooner. The exact shape of the curve can be further explained and in fact reconstructed by an examination of the statistics of grouping bids in auctions. Arbitrage to take advantage of the dispersion of winning bid prices can be shown to be possible, and in theory it appears to be surprisingly profitable. This suggests that on-line auction markets are only weakly market efficient. Several explanations were explored as to why arbitrage has not been pursued, thereby eliminating the observed dispersion. These explanations include the unseen non-monetary transaction and arbitrage costs, the level of sophistication necessary to capitalize on opportunities, and the persisting immaturity of the consumer-to-consumer on-line auction market.
by Mark Andrew Perutz.
M.B.A.

Bruns, Loretta A. (Loretta Ann). "Texas Public School Library Media Specialists' Perceptions of the Use of the Internet in their Schools." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1997. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc277650/.

Full text
Abstract:
With the advent of the 21st century, technological innovations are transforming the face of education and the school library media center. One of these significant developments is the ability to communicate through the Internet. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of Texas public school library media specialists who are active Internet users about their utilization of the Internet, and how their efforts in implementing and supervising Internet access in their school library media centers impact the Texas public schools that they serve. A survey instrument of Likert items was developed that queried these public school library media specialists for their perceptions of Internet use in their schools. MANOVA was the chosen statistical measure for this study. An initial electronic mail-out to 1,232 Texas public school library media specialists (K-12) with Internet addresses were contacted to participate in this study. After a time frame of one month, 196 Texas school library media specialists e-mailed the researcher, confirming their willingness to be a survey participant. All respondents to this e-mail request participated in this study, and a second U.S. mail-out was sent containing the actual survey instrument. The researcher found that the use of the Internet by school library media specialists in Texas did not increase global collegiality from the viewpoint of the survey respondents. Survey respondents felt that an Internet acceptable use policy did not ensure student access to the Internet in Texas public school library media centers. The study examined the relationship between acceptable use policies and Internet censorship, and the researcher found no connection between these two elements from the perspective of the school library media specialist. The study found that school library media specialists believe that their training did improve their students' library research skills. Furthermore, the survey respondents believed that their Internet training improved student learning. Finally, the study found no connection between school size, based on the Texas Education Agency's school classification system, and student access to the Internet.

Byun, Jeffrey. "The consumer Internet in South Korea : an American's perspective." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/44440.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, June 2008.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 33-36).
This thesis will explore the consumer internet industry in South Korea from the perspective of an American with Western values and sensibilities. South Korea is widely considered to be one of the most connected and internet-savvy countries on Earth, with roughly 90% of the population having high-speed broadband access and the average Korean spending 31.2 hours viewing 4,546 web pages per month compared to 25.2 hours viewing 2,519 pages for the average user globally. Moreover, South Korean portals such as Daum and Naver are two of the most trafficked destinations on the web despite the fact that their content is only available in Korean. Consequently, South Korea has become a valuable testing ground for internet technologies and an important market that can serve as a springboard to the rest of Asia. Yet the consumer internet in South Korean retains a distinct local flavor. For better or for worse, the consumer internet industry in South Korea has been deeply influenced by Confucian principles and Korean culture. The path to success for internet firms in South Korea is often quite different than it is in the West, and foreign firms looking to establish a Korean presence need to adjust their strategies accordingly.
by Jeffrey Byun.
M.B.A.

De, la Rosa-Carrillo Ernesto Leon. "On the language of Internet Memes." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3703692.

Full text
Abstract:

Internet Memes transverse and sometimes transcend cyberspace on the back of impossibly cute LOLcats speaking mangled English and the snarky remarks of Image Macro characters always on the lookout for someone to undermine. No longer the abstract notion of a cultural gene that Dawkins (2006) introduced in the late 1970s, memes have now become synonymous with a particular brand of vernacular language that internet users engage by posting, sharing and remixing digital content as they communicate jokes, emotions and opinions.

For the purpose of this research the language of Internet Memes is understood as visual, succinct and capable of inviting active engagement by users who encounter digital content online that exhibits said characteristics. Internet Memes were explored through an Arts-Based Educational Research framework by first identifying the conventions that shape them and then interrogating these conventions during two distinct research phases. <?Pub _newline>In the first phase the researcher, as a doctoral student in art and visual culture education, engaged class readings and assignments by generating digital content that not only responded to the academic topics at hand but did so through forms associated with Internet Memes like Image Macros and Animated GIFs. In the second phase the researcher became a meme literacy facilitator as learners in three different age-groups were led in the reading, writing and remixing of memes during a month-long summer art camp where they were also exposed to other art-making processes such as illustration, acting and sculpture. Each group of learners engaged age-appropriate meme types: 1) the youngest group, 6 and 7 year-olds, wrote Emoji Stories and Separated at Birth memes; 2) the middle group, 8-10 year-olds, worked with Image Macros and Perception memes, 3) while the oldest group, 11-13 year-olds, generated Image Macros and Animated GIFs.

The digital content emerging from both research phases was collected as data and analyzed through a hybrid of Memetics, Actor-Network Theory, Object Oriented Ontology, Remix Theory and Glitch Studies as the researcher shifted shapes yet again and became a Research Jockey sampling freely from each field of study. A case is made for Internet Memes to be understood as an actor-network where meme collectives, individual cybernauts, software and source material are all actants interrelating and making each other enact collective agencies through shared authorships. Additionally specific educational contexts are identified where the language of Internet Memes can serve to incorporate technology, storytelling, visual thinking and remix practices into art and visual culture education.

Finally, the document reporting on the research expands on the hermeneutics of Internet Memes and the phenomenological experiences they elicit that are otherwise absent from traditional scholarly prose. Chapter by chapter the dissertation was crafted as a journey from the academic to the whimsical, from the lecture hall to the image board (where Internet Memes were born), from the written word to the remixed image as a visual language that is equal parts form and content that emerges and culminates in a concluding chapter composed almost entirely of popular Internet Meme types.

An online component can be found at http://memeducation.org/

Hope, Andrew Derek. "School Internet use : case studies in the sociology of risk." Thesis, Durham University, 2002. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3979/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research uses observation, interviews and content analysis to examine the perceived and actual risks arising from Internet use in eight educational establishments. The majority of staff interviewed expressed concern about online pornography and the dangers of web based chat rooms. Additionally staff were anxious about the risks posed by hate engendering sites, websites encouraging experimentation, copyright infringement and threats to network security. In considering these school Internet risk narratives I make a distinction between concern that the student is "at risk" and that they are "dangerous”, posing a threat to the institution. I point out that in the primary schools staff talked about students solely as being "at risk", whereas in secondary schools this concern was tempered with the view that students misusing the school Internet also posed a danger to the institution. In the post-16 college Internet risks were almost solely expressed in terms of the "dangerous student". While only a sparse student risk narrative existed, with a few students anxious about on-line pornography, chat-lines and security there was non-verbal evidence indicating that students were worried about being punished for misusing the Internet. In assessing the "student- at-risk", I argue that exposure to pornography via the school Internet was not likely to pose an actual risk, while undesirable others in chat rooms, hateful websites and sites encouraging experimentation all posed actual, though statistically remote, risks. Considering the Internet activities of the "dangerous student", I found little evidence to suggest that the issues of school image, staff authority and copyright should be a source of great concern, although I note that school network security was an actual risk which deserves more attention. Finally, I consider institutional attempts to control Internet use and alleviate some of these perceived and actual risks through the use of rhetoric, exclusion and surveillance.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate how the young students at a public school in São Paulo using the internet to realize their homework and thereby understand how they use the resources available on the internet as pedagogical tools. The research was qualitative and used interviews and questionnaires as instruments. We started from the assumption that with the advent of the internet, something would change in the dynamic of the school, since the internet was a source of knowledge for students that would allow a dialogue with the school culture. It would be a mechanism could change the relationship that young people establish with the school knowledge, favoring the mobilization of students for learning. It was found, however, that using that young respondents make available resources is only instrumental and depends on the intuitive knowledge they already have and that are not learned at school. School activities are still being proposed in the same way as they were before the internet appear as a research resource. It was concluded then that the internet, so far, failed to alter the dynamics of school and the school ceases to use the internet tools to enhance their learning. The school culture no dialogue with the knowledge taken from the internet by students, failing to relate to part of the culture of these students, some mobilized for school learning in the usual manner.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2011.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 54-58).
Television's influence on culture and society has been widely acknowledged for many years. On the other hand, with the diffusion of the web and of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, used in concert with television, the TV experience has become much more interactive and it is now impossible not to acknowledge that television has also become a driving force for social interaction. Furthermore, the parallel diffusion of internet videos and user generated content, fostered by YouTube in particular, has provided the population with a different approach to media and television in particular: consumers have also become producers. This work analyzes how the different technological improvements have changed the definition of television. Special attention is given to how Facebook and Twitter have influenced some of TV's fundamental properties such as liveness, character-centric storylines and flow and to what the YouTube phenomena means for television. The thesis concludes with a forecast about television's future, which confirms the main argument of this thesis: television is increasingly social.
by Giacomo Summa.
S.M.

Abstract:
This thesis describes what happens when a group of high-school students practice their ability to reflect upon their learning (metacognitive training) and then solve tasks with information collected on the Internet. The overall aim of the thesis is to make an explorative investigation to find out if exercises of metacognitive type can support the use of information for high-school students in their work with the Internet. The dissertation also aims at making clear what significance certain pre-requisites have for metacognitive training, ie if the students attend vocationally or theoretically oriented programmes and the attitude of the teacher towards metacognitive exercises. There are a number of reasons why I have chosen to investigate the field of learning and information and communication technology (ICT). The use of the Internet to search for information in school work has increased. An important reason to investigate these issues is that the use of ICT in itself doesn´t seem to mean improved learning, according to existing research. A central question to study is where the pedagogical surplus value lies in the use of the Internet in school work? In the thesis it is argued that it is not enough to provide schools with computers and Internet connections, but that something more is needed in order to achieve a development in teaching with ICT. During one year 40 students in theoretically and vocationally oriented programmes are being monitored together with their English teachers, in four different actions. The collection of data was done exploratively by interviews, logbook notes, observations and the SOLO-taxonomy. The result is accounted for in four case studies. During the action the professionalism of the teacher in creating beneficial teaching environments, by contextualizing the metacognitive exercises to things that challenge the students' internal motivation, turned out to be central. Furthermore it was shown that the students in the vocationally oriented programmes had most use of developing their reflective ability.

Abstract:
Teacher collaboration is one of the strategies for encouraging teaches to work together to achieve their common ends. In a complex modern world, teachers rarely have time to collaborate with each other. E-mail and Internet technology encourages teacher collaboration to emerge with personal interaction. E-mail is rapid, permitting responses within the same day or even a few hours. On the network, teachers can seek advice from teachers on other campuses and around the world, and at the same time, they can build their relationship with other users. In Western Australia, an e-mail network for science curriculum leaders was established in both primary and secondary schools. In 1998, a study showed that 93 heads of science departments in government high schools were connected to this e-mail network, and more than two-thirds of them had their computers connected to the World Wide Web. This study aims to: firstly, test Fishbough’s models of collaboration among high school science teachers in an electronic environment (e-mail and Internet); and secondly, presents a detailed science web site analysis in terms of the potential of these websites to foster collaboration. The investigation is divided into two distinct studies: Study One is a survey of the teachers’ perceptions of collaboration via the Internet and Study Two is a detailed science website analysis. Study One employed both mail questionnaire and face-to-face interview techniques as methods of data collection. The Science Teacher Collaboration via E-mail and Internet Questionnaire was developed and used to collect data on models of collaboration and interaction perspective of collaborative relationships via the Internet of science teachers at the selected schools. The information from quantitative analysis was used to compose the interview schedule. The follow-up interview was conducted with science teachers who agreed to be interviewed at the sample schools. Study Two adopted a content analysis technique for analysis of data collected from the two kinds of science websites, specific science websites for science teachers and science websites for general audiences from five chosen continents, Australia, Asia, Europe, America and Africa. The study found that the Consulting model of collaboration is frequently used by science teachers and science web sites from five chosen continents.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2000.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 86-88).
In an increasingly competitive consumer products market, companies are striving to create organizations, processes, and tools to reduce the product development cycle time. As product development teams strive to develop products faster and more effectively, incorporating quantitative market research or customer feedback into the design process in a time and cost effective manner becomes increasingly important. Over the last decade, the Internet has emerged as a new and exciting market research medium, which can provide product development teams with an opportunity to obtain rapid quantitative feedback from their customers before making key design decisions. This paper outlines a new methodology to incorporate customer feedback into the feature selection process of product development. This methodology was successfully employed in a new product development effort at Polaroid, and aided in the selection of 2 key product features. The research employed web-based conjoint analysis techniques and an innovative drag and drop technique, which allows customers to create their ideal product by selecting their optimal set of features at a given price. Leveraging the capabilities of the Internet to incorporate styled web design, animation, interactive activities and usability considerations into the development of an Internet-based, market research effort can reduce respondent fatigue and provide the respondent with a more enjoyable experience while collecting meaningful quantitative data on customer feature preferences.
by Meghan P. Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 113).
Since the Internet began to be a source of information to many people around the world, newspapers and other traditional media have had to adapt their strategies in order to cope with this nascent medium. In fact, and years after this process began around 1995. traditional newspapers' web pages are among the most visited sites when readers want to obtain news information. This thesis examines the adaptation to the Internet of an existing media conglomerate from an organizational point of view, and how this adaptation has finally ended in a newsroom convergence that produces several specialized products that are delivered to the customers through different media, such as newspapers, web pages, magazines or radio programs. Since this process began in 1995, the company has developed this adaptation following different strategies that were mostly shaped by several factors, such as technology innovation, the external economic environment, the learning process and the response of the traditional journalists to this new medium, and the response of readers, advertisers, and competitors, among other factors. The investigation of this process was carried out interviewing company's employees at the own firm facilities, and obtaining general information of this kind of process through readings of specialized papers and books.
by Jose A. Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2010.
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.
Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 73-74).
Iconic Web companies based in the US, along the likes of Google, Facebook, and Twitter, have exhibited some racial/ethnic diversity among their founders, yet there appears to be a dearth of African-Americans in the group. In this thesis I conduct an empirical investigation into the potential existence of a set of impediments to blockbuster success for African-American founded consumer Internet companies -- or an "online obstacle," as I have chosen to term the condition. In utilizing a short-form survey and telephone interviews to collect the thoughts and opinions of 16 black entrepreneurs who have made at least one attempt at launching a consumer Internet start-up, I document three recurrent themes. First, there do not appear to be enough African-American graduates of engineering and computer science disciplines to facilitate creation of promising Internet ventures that could achieve blockbuster status. Second, black Web entrepreneurs by-and-large have not achieved the heights of capital infusion that seems to be necessary to transition a concept from "successful" to "blockbuster." Lastly, African-American founders of consumer Internet companies do not in any significant numbers appear to live and play in the start-up ecosystem that is Silicon Valley, inhibiting development of relationships and access to resources needed to ascend to blockbuster status online. Overall, my findings suggest that the online obstacle I seek to identify is very much a collection of barriers that has a direct correlation to issues black entrepreneurs have spoken about for decades, suggesting that any revealed online obstacle very much lacks an online origin.
by Allen T. Dwyer, Bernadette. "Scaffolding internet reading : a study of a disadvantaged school community in Ireland." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2010. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12426/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study had three main purposes: first, to explore the baseline skills and strategies of struggling readers as they conducted online Internet inquiry; second, to scaffold these children to develop effective online reading comprehension and information seeking-skills and strategies in the context of an integrated curriculum; and third, to examine the affective, cognitive and social dimensions of learning in groups and the role of peer collaboration in developing online reading skills and strategies during Internet inquiry. Three theoretical frameworks underpinned the study: a new literacies framework, a motivation and engagement framework, and a cognitive scaffolding framework. The study was conducted in a disadvantaged school in Ireland over an 18 month period with 3rd and 5th class cohorts. It employed a Formative and Design Experimental methodology to iteratively refine the study intervention, as barriers to implementation of the pedagogical goal of the study were identified and factors that enhanced effectiveness of the intervention were revealed. The study was conducted in three interlinked phases: a Baseline phase, a Reading Development and Critical Web Literacy (RDCWL) phase, and the Main Study phase. A range of essentially qualitative data sources was analysed, using inductive and deductive methodologies, to extract themes from the data. Findings from the study suggested that (a) the development of an ecological learning community within the classroom coupled with an integrated curriculum enhanced engagement and motivated the pupils to develop online reading skills; (b) new literacies were acquired through explicit instruction, adaptive scaffolding and peer-to- peer collaboration; (c) developmental differences between children indicated the importance of nurturing self-regulatory reading processes and metacognitive knowledge in developing effective online reading comprehension and information-seeking skills and strategies.

Abstract:
碩士
佛光人文社會學院
教育資訊學研究所
99
The Gentleness of the Internet Addict Boy - High School/Vocational School Student’s Internet Addiction - A Case Study By Li, Pin-Hsien Graduate School of Education and Information Science - Fo Guang University [Abstract] Hsiao-Hsin, a countryside boy raised by his grandparents, becomes addicted to the internet during his first year of vocational school. After parental and teacher counseling failed, Hsiao Hsin dropped out of school due to unacceptable behavior and poor health. This study, using the qualitative research approach, traces the history of Hsiao Hsin’s growing up period, and reflects on the struggles he went through to successfully return to the campus. The author, Hsiao-Hsin’s former class counselor, discovered through this study that despite a tough appearance this is a boy with a gentle heart who tried to protect himself and the people around him. The result of this study revealed that the following factors contributed to Hsiao-Hsin’s smooth return to campus: Hsiao-Hsin’s attitude as he was admitted to school, pressure from school work, school performance problems, relationship with teachers, relationship with classmates, the temptation of internet, and his grandparents’ upbringing. Hsiao-Hsin is a boy with a good heart, however having been raised by his grandparents has undoubtedly resulted in part of his deviant personality. The generation gap between Hsiao-Hsin and his grandparents makes it difficult for them to communicate with each other and only the teacher who is trusted by both Hsiao-Hsin and his grandparents acts as a communication bridge between them. It is suggested that for future research, we broaden our study base of different internet addicts who returned successfully to school, or psychologically research those who were addicted to the internet yet managed to return to a normal life, discussing how family, school, fellowship, and mass media played their roles. Key words: high school/vocational school student, internet addiction, internet indulgence, case study

Abstract:
碩士
國立臺東大學
社會科教育學系碩士班
99
Our aim was to investigate the current situation of internet usage motivation and internet ethics, among elementary school students. In addition to our examination of related studies dealing with these issues, we used survey questionnaires, targeting 800 elementary school students between the 4th and 6th grades in Taichung City. We employed a t-test of independent samples, ANOVA analysis, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. After induction of research results, our conclusions are as follows: 1. Among the sample, using the internet as an educational tool was the highest motivating factor, with social aspects ranking the lowest. With regard to issues of internet ethics, anonymous online commentary ranked the highest, and online intellectual property rights ranked the lowest. The status of internet usage was ranked highly by most students, as was the overall status of internet ethics. 2. In most cases, variables in the background of the students led to significant differences with regard to both internet usage and internet ethics. The utilitarian aspect and social motivation behind internet usage and internet ethics were all ranked more highly by female students than their male classmates. Sixth grade students showed the highest motivation to use the internet, while fifth grade students scored the lowest regarding internet ethics. Students from middle and lower socioeconomic status also scored lower in internet ethics. The utilitarian aspect of using the internet increased as the length of time spent online increased. The less time students spent online, the less they were motivated to use the internet for entertainment purposes. The issue of internet ethics worsened as the time spent online weekly increased, except in relation to online intellectual property rights. 3. The motivation behind internet usage in 4th to 6th grade students in Taichung City was related to the internet ethics. 4. The motivation behind internet usage partially influenced internet ethics. The utilitarian aspect of using the internet had a positive influence on the four dimensions of internet ethics, while social influences and using the internet for entertainment purposes negatively influenced anonymous online commentary and online privacy rights. Guided by these results, this study presents a number of proposals that could be used as a reference for parents, schools, and related organizations, when instructing 4th to 6th grade Taichung City students in dealing with issues of internet usage and ethics.
