Abstract:
The article considers the phenomenon of In-ternet memes in the context of the mytholo-gization of ideas about reality. The author fo-cuses on Internet memes of dystopian con-tent and speaks about dystopia as an object representing the reality surrounding a person. He considers the Internet meme as a commu-nication phenomenon of digital culture. The Internet meme has a complex structure and reflects the views of Internet users on the agenda, their worldview, social and political system of society. In the article, the author contrasts the understanding of the meme within the framework of evolutionary biology and the theory of mind, which was developed within the framework of the so-called memet-ic approach, with the definition of a meme as a media meme and an Internet meme. The author supports the theory of media and communication interpretation of the Internet meme, and traces the connection between the metaphor and the myth presented in it. The metaphorical nature of the Internet meme explains its mythological nature. Meta-phorical constructions serve as a way to en-code myths in Internet memes, as a result of which they mythologize the message con-tained in them. The inclusion of dystopian im-ages of mass culture in Internet memes inevi-tably leads to their mythologization. The theme of dystopias appears in Internet memes as a reaction to the negative aspects of everyday reality, or as an expression of us-ers' attitude to the genre as a whole or specif-ic works, which indicates the popularity of dystopian images among users. Through them, Internet users express their critical attitude to reality in visual-text digital format commu-nication messages.

Abstract:
The present study considers memes as socio-cultural phenomena which is complex and multi-level. The authors single out research prospects for studying memes with the methods applied in socio-logical research. Even though a variety of disciplines studies memes, sociology analyzes memes from the perspective of social stratification, “us” and “them” dichotomy, allowing researchers to observe memet-ics as both socio-cultural and quasi-political reality. Internet meme is shown as the most dynamic and representative phenomenon in memetics. Social media provide a context for Internet meme that re-flect values of any modern society. The methods applied in meme research presupposes a synthesis of interdisciplinary approaches and separate proce-dures including, firstly, multimodal analysis, content analysis and discursive studies. Event analysis is a subtype of content analysis. In the case of memes interpretation due to this method a researcher can observe the dynamics of social and political events, define social and cultural continuum markers as well as values of modern society.

Abstract:
In these edited remarks originally given at ROFLCon in May 2012, Jonathan Zittrain muses on the nature of memes and their relationships to their creators as well as to broader culture and to politics. The distributed environment of the internet allows memes to morph and become distanced from their original intentions. As meme culture becomes more and more assimilated into popular culture, subcultures like those of Reddit or 4chan have begun to re-conceptualize their own role from just meme propagators to cultural producers. Memes can gain commercial appeal, much to the chagrin of their creators. More strangely, memes can gain political traction and affiliation, like American conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly’s ‘You can‘t explain that’ or Anonymous’ ‘Low Orbit Ion Cannon’. Can meme culture survive becoming not just the property of geeks and nerds, but part of the commercial and political world?

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the development of a sociological definition of the іnternet-meme. The emergence of the Internet as a special space of communication has provoked the emergence of new phenomena in society, which should be studied by sociology. One of these phenomena is the Internet meme, the study of which is not only practically promising in the context of digitalization and internetization of Ukrainian society, but also important for determining the possibilities of influencing social phenomena. The purpose of the article is to develop a sociological definition of the іnternet-meme based on the systematization of existing approaches and generalization of the main properties of the Internet meme. The development of a sociological definition is only the first but necessary step in the study of Internet memes and the possibilities of their impact on social reality. To achieve this goal, the article distinguishes between the concepts of «meme» and «internet-meme», taking into account the metaphorical nature of the term «meme» (coined by R. Dawkins), which is a product of the theory of Social Darwinism, and the derivative origin of the word «internet-meme». The analysis of the literature allowed the authors to distinguish the following areas of consideration of Internet memes: 1. as special information; 2. as a certain action or situation; 3. as an information capacity capable of carrying certain information units and constructs. Based on the results of the analysis, the authors have identified such properties of the іnternet-meme phenomenon as contextuality (dependence of content on form and situation), intertextuality (ability of an Internet meme to make references to other texts and templates) and schematism (transmission of concise images, meanings and information that affects the simplicity and speed of consumption of Internet memes). Based on the identified areas of consideration of Internet memes and their distinguished properties, the article offers the author's definition of an іnternet-meme as a schematic means of storing and reproducing information used on Internet platforms and discursively combining the artifacts of the sign system with the actual context of the environment or its individual elements in a template way.

Abstract:
The object of the research is Internet memes that constitute the thematic group “Grand Coalition” and appeared during the reign of the parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany 2018–2021. Internet memes selected under the given denotative and temporal features are analyzed in dynamics within N. A. Zinoviev’s typology, based on a set of dichotomies (“truth — lie”, “character — event”, “tradition — innovation”, “background — figure”, “image — text”, “thought — action”). A conclusion is made about the field organization of the Internet meme structure. This structure includes the remaining constant kernel formed by the visual template and the generalized meaning of the Internet meme. It is shown that the specificity of the functioning of the precedent phenomenon as part of Internet memes lies in its transformation through the distribution or replacement of elements and subsequent reinterpretation. The very development of the Internet meme, its successful promotion online supposes the decontextualization of the primary meme and its further recontextualization in new communicative situations. The precedent phenomena involved are most often the conductors of negative meanings. The following signs of the grand coalition are regularly reflected in Internet memes — incapacity, mistrust on the part of citizens, and a bad reputation of its members.

Abstract:
The article considers the features of meme as a genre of Internet communication. The author focuses on the characteristics of the Internet meme as a means of intertextuality. The main attention is paid to the types and sources of intertextuality of memes in the Ukrainian-language Internet. In the last few years there has been a growing interest in study of new internet genres. To the author’s knowledge, Ukrainian internet meme has been scarcely investigated from the point of view of intertextuality. The relevance of this work is due to the fact that Internet memes in the Ukrainian media are insufficiently explored. In particular, the category of intertextuality of memes has been poorly studied. This paper presents a new look at a previously unexplored aspect of intertextuality in Internet memes of the Ukrainian-language segment of the Internet. The purpose of this article is to identify and describe the features of the implementation of intertextuality in Internet memes. The author defines the Internet meme as a unit of Internet discourse, which is characterized by a combination of standard in form and expression in meaning. In this paper, the scholar describes meme as an illustration and a text to it. Due to their nature, memes are concentrated information in a vivid form. The material for the study is Internet memes from social networks of the Ukrainian-language Internet, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. In order to study intertextuality in internet memes the author uses intertextual analysis and continuous sampling method. This allowes to explore the intertextual basis of Internet memes. The research shows that the nature of the intertextuality of Internet memes is diverse. The author outlines that prototexts of Internet memes are precedent names, statements, texts and situations. The paper describes the types of precedent texts, as well as the mechanisms of intertextuality. The author separately considers the functions of precedent texts in memes. The results show that the main functions of Internet memes are a means of creating comic effect, popularization through introduction into the global context, aesthetic effect, concentrating information and intellectual play. Research on intertextuality in Internet memes appears fully justified as it is still insufficiently studied. The conclusions state that intertextuality is realized in Internet discourse, because Internet genres are interconnected and interactive. Duplication of the meme supports its precedent. Today, all texts on the Internet are interconnected by hypervocations, and the Internet has become one hypertext in the modern information and communication environment.

Abstract:
Abstract In the internet age, memes are at once products and driving forces of social practices. A meme contains a memetic message and a meme output, and boasts, if guided by a pragmatic way of thinking, several features, including but not limited to salience, frequency, adaptability, argumentativity, sociality, embeddedness, embodiedness, locality, relativity, emotionality and dynamicity. The current global COVID-19 pandemic serves as a fitting and timely touchstone to testify how human beings are surrounded by numerous good and evil memes in the online world, and how internet memes, as can be seen from the illustration of two specific memes, namely, the ‘stay home, stay safe’ meme and the ‘wear a mask’ meme, are impacting human life-worlds, online and offline, with their transformative power, be it constructive or destructive. Moreover, researching how memes plays a decisive part in internet-mediated interaction provides a lens of insight through which ‘deep states’ of human nature of both self and others can be uncovered and through which what Nietzsche called “a revaluation of values” is possible.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the adaptation of memes. Internet memes are regarded as new units of communication, characterized by specific properties. Their main feature is the ability to transform based on the precedent nature of the meme and its instant distribution. The adaptive potential of internet memes leads to the emergence of new formations, expanding the range of pragmatic tasks solved through meme usage. The purpose of the article is to analyze the main directions of meme adaptation and the most productive options for transformations based on popular memes from recent years. The methodology employed includes the identification of intertextuality, analysis of speech genres, and semiotic methods involving the study of codes and their interaction within a communicative unit. Typical ways of transforming memes on the internet have been identified, such as changes in visual and/or verbal components, transformation of form and content while retaining visual or verbal markers, contamination of memes, and arbitrary transformation while maintaining thematic markers. Additionally, the stages of meme adaptation in the internet space, from the original meme to a metameme that retains minimal connections to the original unit, have been outlined. A natural outcome of adaptation is the ability of memes to transcend their primary sphere of existence and extend into the realms of media, education, art, and more.

Drawing on analytical concepts from CDA and related perspectives, such as multimodal discourse analysis and social semiotics, the paper analyzes the visual and textual elements of a sample of the FWP and TWS memes. The paper argues that the text and images featured in the memes are ideologically salient and discursively construct oppositional binaries between “us” and “them” in terms of wealth disparity.

Abstract:
Background: The modern day era of the Internet gave birth to the growing phenomenon of Internet memes (IM), a type of online user generated content (UGC) (Gangadharbatla, 2008). Now marketers have begun researching the relationship between UGC and consumer based brand equity (CBBE) (Christodoulides et.al, 2012; Rachna and Khajuria, 2017). The problem discussion presents the issue of the diminishing control of brand equity due to the rise of UGC and lack of research on how to manage its influence (Morrison et al., 2013). Leading to the purpose of this thesis, which is to determine the impact Internet memes have on consumer based brand equity. Literature: The review presents two leading contributors to the field, Aaker’s (1991) framework on the different dimensions of CBBE and Keller’s (1993) definition of the concept. In addition recent studies on UGC and brand equity provided the basis for hypothesis development. Method: This thesis assumed a deductive research approach, developing the hypothesis from current literature in the field. A quantitative study, that utilized an explanatory research approach, because it best suited the experimental design. As for the data collection method, surveys were considered (Saunders et al., 2016), which the authors designed as a self-completion questionnaire and pre-tested (Bryman and Bell, 2015). Convenience sampling was chosen to select participants (Hernon, 2004). Construct and content validity was used along with homogeneity and stability to control reliability and measure the quality of research instruments (Bryman and Bell, 2015). SPSS version 25 was used to conduct all statistical analyses. Results: Four hypotheses were developed, to measure the effect of the independent variable IM on each of the four CBBE dimensions. To summarize, three of the hypothesis (H1, H3 and H4) were rejected as the difference in the means are not significant enough and can be explained by chance. The effect on brand association (H2) was however found to be significant therefore H2 was accepted.

Abstract:
EMS personnel tend to face higher burnout rates than those in similar professions, which makes them more likely to make mistakes, engage in safety-compromising behaviors, and get injured. This project examines humor used in the form of Internet memes as a coping mechanism. Internet memes are modifiable, replicable units of cultural transmission that are passed and gain influence through the Internet. I applied the Maslach Burnout Inventory to EMS related memes on the website Reddit. I found that memes that dealt with burnout typically referenced non-traumatic factors as being the source of burnout, and that these memes would often lead to conversations that allowed EMS personnel to share their experiences with one another. I concluded that internet memes can provide a way for EMS personnel to express their feelings anonymously and through a façade of humor, and can also let other people who may be going through similar experiences know that they are not alone.

Abstract:
Social media content, as well as how it is being used and the impact it has on the society, have underwent significant transformations and nowadays they are quite different from what they were when social media just came around. Analysing the transformations is important for understanding both the current state and further development of the technology that stands behind social media. One of the most noticeable aspects of today’s social media is the phenomenon of “internet memes”. An internet meme can be roughly defined as “a piece of culture, typically a joke, which gains influence through online transmission” (Davison, 2012). While memes play a substantial role in the use of social media and there has been growing interest in exploiting their potential for marketing and, more generally, conveying various types of messages, there has been a lack of HCI (Human Computer Interaction) research on memes. The understanding of how memes are perceived by social media users and how memes spread on social media is currently rather limited. The study reported in this thesis addresses the limitation of existing HCI research by presenting empirical evidence for the definition of memes, as well as memes' spreadability. Three online surveys (the total number of respondents:3161), targeting the users of the social media platforms Reddit and Facebook, were developed within the study. The social media platform Reddit was selected because it is a platform where memes are often created and also where they are moved to other platforms, like YouTube and Instagram. The study adopted a mixed method approach, combining the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. It is shown that memes are shared because they are found funny and that they are shared within the community or with friends. But if a meme spreads and becomes popular outside this original community, the meme loses its value to the original users. Some contents, like character memes, are much easier to spread, but just as soon as they become popular, they disappear.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores a series of thought experiments for an investigation of what one casually calls the image. In this endeavor, images will be rendered as bodies compiled from versions of themselves (bodies of images), explored embedded in dissemination processes (memeplexes), and hence contoured as highly effective structures with sophisticated potential for transformation (image objects). Basing on three major theoretical concepts (meme theory, object-oriented ontology, and network effects), this re-interrogation of the image is the suggestion of a reading of images as entities that actively, or inactively, form structural assemblages and maintain energetic human and non-human constellations which shape the present. At the close of the exploration, a professional habitus is sketched in which art educators are experts for image relations.

Abstract:
AbstractFar-right grassroot organizations were early adopters of the internet and social media and have been using it to spread their ideologies, mobilize people and network since the 1990s. With the increased usage of social media, their communication style has naturally changed. Due to the interactive nature of social media, the far-right groups started to communicate in a savvy style based on meme and DIY aesthetics. This style allows these groups to blurry the line between serious and irony (Shifman, L., Memes in Digital Culture. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2014) but also between facts and misinformation (Klein, O., The Open Journal of Sociopolitical Studies 154–179, 2020). There is a burgeoning body of literature investigating the way and for what purposes such organizations use the internet in which the researchers look particularly on memes (Klein, O., The Open Journal of Sociopolitical Studies 154–179, 2020) but also humour (Billig, M., Comic racism and violence. In S. Lockyer, & M. Pickering (Eds.), Beyond a joke. The limits of humor (pp. 25–44). New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2005a; Billig, M., Laughter and ridicule. Towards a social critique of humor. London: SAGE Publications, 2005b). However, not many studies explored the link between humour and morality. The aim of this exploratory study, in which humour is viewed as a means of claims making and negotiation of political views, is to deepen the knowledge of how humour in memes produced and reproduced by far-right organizations can serve as a tool for constructing a moral order. To do so, I analysed memes used on the far-right Facebook page run by Czech organization Angry Mothers which engage in anti-Islam and anti-gender activism. Based on Michael Billig’s (2005) distinction between rebellious and disciplinary humour, I argue that the organization used rebellious humour to present themselves as an alternative to mainstream media and resistance to the alleged dictatorship of liberal elites and disciplinary humour to put minorities (both sexual and ethnic) “in their place”.

Abstract:
Cardiac arrhythmias, posing serious health risks, are diagnosed using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, crucial for detecting irregularities. Recent advancements in signal processing and machine learning enable efficacious ECG signal analysis, improving prediction and diagnosis of arrhythmias. This paper proposes a novel approach centered on Internet of Things (IoT) schemes for long term monitoring, while also focusing on developing a robust predictive model for detecting irregular heartbeats through ECG signal analysis. The proposed system utilizes an ECG pulse sensor to acquire data, which is subsequently sent to cloud through a Node MCU module for visualization on IoT display. Simultaneously, the input ECG data undergoes a series of technical processes to enable prediction. Initially, the ECG data undergoes preprocessing and feature extraction using Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT). FrFT extracts relevant features from the data in time frequency domain without overwhelming computational resources which is important for monitoring and analysis. Subsequently, the Improved Bat Algorithm (IBA) refines the feature set by selecting most informative features for classification. Finally, hybrid Modified Convolutional Neural Network Long Short Term Memory (MCNN LSTM) architecture accurately classifies the ECG signals, enabling timely intervention and improved patient care in cardiovascular health management. Experimental validation using Python software demonstrates the superiority of the proposed system, in predicting irregular heartbeats using ECG signal analysis.

Abstract:
Memes have become a prevalent part of digital culture, transcending their origins as simple internet jokes to become powerful tools for communication, social commentary, and even education. Their social and cultural use is diverse, serving as a universal language for expressing complex ideas, fostering community, and providing a platform for social critique. Studies such as Tidy et al. (2024) and Brown (2020) have highlighted the educational potential of memes in STEM fields, demonstrating their effectiveness in simplifying complex concepts and engaging students. Platforms for meme creation have the potential to develop an environment that boosts the meme-making process.Existing platforms (i.e. imgflip.com, an online free memes generator) rely entirely on user input and do very little to guide the users in memes creation. Traditional user interfaces of memes generators are simple and easy to operate, but no contextual authoring support, which may limit the creative potential and content construction. Thus, we hypothesize that AI can expedite the creative process by presenting relevant meme templates, and generating suggested captions, acting as a “creative collaborator” for users. In this work, we explore utilizing OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 to facilitate the creation of educational and engaging memes, leveraging its ability to generate humorous and informative content. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted a comparative case study with Imgflip’s free online meme generator. Participants created waste management related memes using both tools, and we assessed their productivity, creativity, and satisfaction. Qualitative feedback revealed the AI tool's LLM capabilities, hints, and instructions as key drivers of its enhanced performance. These findings highlight the potential of AI to revolutionize meme creation and inform the development of future user interfaces that leverage AI to enhance creativity, engagement, and educational impact.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the key characteristics of an Internet meme and evaluates its potential application as a tool for developing school students’ linguistic and communicative competence. The author investigates scientific researches on Internet technology and methodology of foreign language teaching, and, thus, the author views Internet memes as a form of polycode text that contributes to the development of readers’ functional literacy. TThe study proves that the use of internet memes, both during lessons and within independent and project work, facilitates a more effective development of foreign language communication skills and the improvement of communicative competence, as well as increases motivation for foreign language learning, when proper methodological organisation of student activities is implemented. Additionally, the article provides sample tasks that serve as examples of usage of Internet memes based on the content of the 9th grade textbook, “L’oiseau bleu” (The Blue Bird), which can serve as supplementary resources when working with the textbook.

Abstract:
Due to the unique opportunities provided by its digital economy, Southeast Asia is a major arena of market expansion for US-based and Chinese tech juggernauts today. For now, the presence and strategy of the two nation’s companies in the ASEAN region has been driven by market considerations. At the same time, social media platforms and mobile operation systems can serve as sources of soft power, which means that Big Tech and ASEAN start-ups could drift into the US-China conflict in the future. In the Southeast Asian market, US tech giants do not have to worry about being crowded out by their Chinese counterparts in the short run; at the same time, China’s growing economic influence in the region undoubtedly boosts the technology investments of its companies. It is a core interest of ASEAN nations to avoid taking a side in the US-China tech rivalry and thereby escape the role of being a mere data source for some global digital platforms or US-based and Chinese tech companies.

Abstract:
The Ngā Wai a Te Tūī – Hiringa Hauora Summer Research Mentorship is a kaupapa Māori collaboration to increase hauora Māori (Māori wellbeing) research capacity. The idea of research internships is not new, nor is a focus on hauora Māori. What is distinctive about this summer mentorship is its kaupapa Māori approach to support a diverse range of Māori into research that is by Māori, for Māori, and holds Māori values, beliefs and aspirations at its centre. Holding fast to our ways of being throughout the programme has produced a set of learnings and experiences amongst six ‘interns’ that we suggest offers a useful example of how to grow kaupapa Māori research in the hauora space, and beyond. Like many great Māori ideas, this mentorship programme was enabled through whanaungatanga (relationships) – in this case an email from one colleague to another that went something like, “Hey mete I have an idea I want to run past you.” A senior researcher at Te Hiringa Hauora, an evidence-based health-promotions organisation, approached her colleague, co-author Hinekura Smith, a senior lecturer and researcher at Unitec’s Ngā Wai a Te Tūī Māori and Indigenous Research Centre, with a funding opportunity to develop and facilitate a summer internship programme.

Abstract:
In field operating environments, military units must ensure access to a critical water supply to maintain mission readiness. Increasing complexity of logistics and costs to transport water and climate change are driving the development and demonstration of water treatment units. The treatment unit described uses ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) mem-brane technologies with a disinfection step to treat low-strength graywater from shower facilities at Camp Shelby Joint Force Training Center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Samples were collected from human shower sampling events. During the demonstration, greater than 100,000 gal. of graywater were treated, supplied by two battalion training rotations over a 6-month period. Characterization of the source graywater continued throughout the system demonstration. Based on the literature, these are among the largest source-separated gray-water sampling events to date. The combined treatment train of UF/RO met all compliance metrics for all analytes of interest for potability and met nonpotable metrics except for special use cases in three states. Both the quality of the treated water and the effective volume gains from an 85% multiplier effect directly support DoD water sustainment goals for both installations and operational environments.
