Abstract:
The article considers the phenomenon of In-ternet memes in the context of the mytholo-gization of ideas about reality. The author fo-cuses on Internet memes of dystopian con-tent and speaks about dystopia as an object representing the reality surrounding a person. He considers the Internet meme as a commu-nication phenomenon of digital culture. The Internet meme has a complex structure and reflects the views of Internet users on the agenda, their worldview, social and political system of society. In the article, the author contrasts the understanding of the meme within the framework of evolutionary biology and the theory of mind, which was developed within the framework of the so-called memet-ic approach, with the definition of a meme as a media meme and an Internet meme. The author supports the theory of media and communication interpretation of the Internet meme, and traces the connection between the metaphor and the myth presented in it. The metaphorical nature of the Internet meme explains its mythological nature. Meta-phorical constructions serve as a way to en-code myths in Internet memes, as a result of which they mythologize the message con-tained in them. The inclusion of dystopian im-ages of mass culture in Internet memes inevi-tably leads to their mythologization. The theme of dystopias appears in Internet memes as a reaction to the negative aspects of everyday reality, or as an expression of us-ers' attitude to the genre as a whole or specif-ic works, which indicates the popularity of dystopian images among users. Through them, Internet users express their critical attitude to reality in visual-text digital format commu-nication messages.

Abstract:
The present study considers memes as socio-cultural phenomena which is complex and multi-level. The authors single out research prospects for studying memes with the methods applied in socio-logical research. Even though a variety of disciplines studies memes, sociology analyzes memes from the perspective of social stratification, “us” and “them” dichotomy, allowing researchers to observe memet-ics as both socio-cultural and quasi-political reality. Internet meme is shown as the most dynamic and representative phenomenon in memetics. Social media provide a context for Internet meme that re-flect values of any modern society. The methods applied in meme research presupposes a synthesis of interdisciplinary approaches and separate proce-dures including, firstly, multimodal analysis, content analysis and discursive studies. Event analysis is a subtype of content analysis. In the case of memes interpretation due to this method a researcher can observe the dynamics of social and political events, define social and cultural continuum markers as well as values of modern society.

Abstract:
In these edited remarks originally given at ROFLCon in May 2012, Jonathan Zittrain muses on the nature of memes and their relationships to their creators as well as to broader culture and to politics. The distributed environment of the internet allows memes to morph and become distanced from their original intentions. As meme culture becomes more and more assimilated into popular culture, subcultures like those of Reddit or 4chan have begun to re-conceptualize their own role from just meme propagators to cultural producers. Memes can gain commercial appeal, much to the chagrin of their creators. More strangely, memes can gain political traction and affiliation, like American conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly’s ‘You can‘t explain that’ or Anonymous’ ‘Low Orbit Ion Cannon’. Can meme culture survive becoming not just the property of geeks and nerds, but part of the commercial and political world?

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the development of a sociological definition of the іnternet-meme. The emergence of the Internet as a special space of communication has provoked the emergence of new phenomena in society, which should be studied by sociology. One of these phenomena is the Internet meme, the study of which is not only practically promising in the context of digitalization and internetization of Ukrainian society, but also important for determining the possibilities of influencing social phenomena. The purpose of the article is to develop a sociological definition of the іnternet-meme based on the systematization of existing approaches and generalization of the main properties of the Internet meme. The development of a sociological definition is only the first but necessary step in the study of Internet memes and the possibilities of their impact on social reality. To achieve this goal, the article distinguishes between the concepts of «meme» and «internet-meme», taking into account the metaphorical nature of the term «meme» (coined by R. Dawkins), which is a product of the theory of Social Darwinism, and the derivative origin of the word «internet-meme». The analysis of the literature allowed the authors to distinguish the following areas of consideration of Internet memes: 1. as special information; 2. as a certain action or situation; 3. as an information capacity capable of carrying certain information units and constructs. Based on the results of the analysis, the authors have identified such properties of the іnternet-meme phenomenon as contextuality (dependence of content on form and situation), intertextuality (ability of an Internet meme to make references to other texts and templates) and schematism (transmission of concise images, meanings and information that affects the simplicity and speed of consumption of Internet memes). Based on the identified areas of consideration of Internet memes and their distinguished properties, the article offers the author's definition of an іnternet-meme as a schematic means of storing and reproducing information used on Internet platforms and discursively combining the artifacts of the sign system with the actual context of the environment or its individual elements in a template way.

Abstract:
The object of the research is Internet memes that constitute the thematic group “Grand Coalition” and appeared during the reign of the parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany 2018–2021. Internet memes selected under the given denotative and temporal features are analyzed in dynamics within N. A. Zinoviev’s typology, based on a set of dichotomies (“truth — lie”, “character — event”, “tradition — innovation”, “background — figure”, “image — text”, “thought — action”). A conclusion is made about the field organization of the Internet meme structure. This structure includes the remaining constant kernel formed by the visual template and the generalized meaning of the Internet meme. It is shown that the specificity of the functioning of the precedent phenomenon as part of Internet memes lies in its transformation through the distribution or replacement of elements and subsequent reinterpretation. The very development of the Internet meme, its successful promotion online supposes the decontextualization of the primary meme and its further recontextualization in new communicative situations. The precedent phenomena involved are most often the conductors of negative meanings. The following signs of the grand coalition are regularly reflected in Internet memes — incapacity, mistrust on the part of citizens, and a bad reputation of its members.

Abstract:
The article considers the features of meme as a genre of Internet communication. The author focuses on the characteristics of the Internet meme as a means of intertextuality. The main attention is paid to the types and sources of intertextuality of memes in the Ukrainian-language Internet. In the last few years there has been a growing interest in study of new internet genres. To the author’s knowledge, Ukrainian internet meme has been scarcely investigated from the point of view of intertextuality. The relevance of this work is due to the fact that Internet memes in the Ukrainian media are insufficiently explored. In particular, the category of intertextuality of memes has been poorly studied. This paper presents a new look at a previously unexplored aspect of intertextuality in Internet memes of the Ukrainian-language segment of the Internet. The purpose of this article is to identify and describe the features of the implementation of intertextuality in Internet memes. The author defines the Internet meme as a unit of Internet discourse, which is characterized by a combination of standard in form and expression in meaning. In this paper, the scholar describes meme as an illustration and a text to it. Due to their nature, memes are concentrated information in a vivid form. The material for the study is Internet memes from social networks of the Ukrainian-language Internet, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. In order to study intertextuality in internet memes the author uses intertextual analysis and continuous sampling method. This allowes to explore the intertextual basis of Internet memes. The research shows that the nature of the intertextuality of Internet memes is diverse. The author outlines that prototexts of Internet memes are precedent names, statements, texts and situations. The paper describes the types of precedent texts, as well as the mechanisms of intertextuality. The author separately considers the functions of precedent texts in memes. The results show that the main functions of Internet memes are a means of creating comic effect, popularization through introduction into the global context, aesthetic effect, concentrating information and intellectual play. Research on intertextuality in Internet memes appears fully justified as it is still insufficiently studied. The conclusions state that intertextuality is realized in Internet discourse, because Internet genres are interconnected and interactive. Duplication of the meme supports its precedent. Today, all texts on the Internet are interconnected by hypervocations, and the Internet has become one hypertext in the modern information and communication environment.

Abstract:
Abstract In the internet age, memes are at once products and driving forces of social practices. A meme contains a memetic message and a meme output, and boasts, if guided by a pragmatic way of thinking, several features, including but not limited to salience, frequency, adaptability, argumentativity, sociality, embeddedness, embodiedness, locality, relativity, emotionality and dynamicity. The current global COVID-19 pandemic serves as a fitting and timely touchstone to testify how human beings are surrounded by numerous good and evil memes in the online world, and how internet memes, as can be seen from the illustration of two specific memes, namely, the ‘stay home, stay safe’ meme and the ‘wear a mask’ meme, are impacting human life-worlds, online and offline, with their transformative power, be it constructive or destructive. Moreover, researching how memes plays a decisive part in internet-mediated interaction provides a lens of insight through which ‘deep states’ of human nature of both self and others can be uncovered and through which what Nietzsche called “a revaluation of values” is possible.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the adaptation of memes. Internet memes are regarded as new units of communication, characterized by specific properties. Their main feature is the ability to transform based on the precedent nature of the meme and its instant distribution. The adaptive potential of internet memes leads to the emergence of new formations, expanding the range of pragmatic tasks solved through meme usage. The purpose of the article is to analyze the main directions of meme adaptation and the most productive options for transformations based on popular memes from recent years. The methodology employed includes the identification of intertextuality, analysis of speech genres, and semiotic methods involving the study of codes and their interaction within a communicative unit. Typical ways of transforming memes on the internet have been identified, such as changes in visual and/or verbal components, transformation of form and content while retaining visual or verbal markers, contamination of memes, and arbitrary transformation while maintaining thematic markers. Additionally, the stages of meme adaptation in the internet space, from the original meme to a metameme that retains minimal connections to the original unit, have been outlined. A natural outcome of adaptation is the ability of memes to transcend their primary sphere of existence and extend into the realms of media, education, art, and more.

Abstract:
The proliferation of Internet has accelerated the dissemination of information, which has given birth to the term “Internet meme”. Social network is one of the pivotal media in spreading an Internet meme. Marketers utilize Internet memes to carry out marketing activities to significantly improve their Internet exposure. We thus verify whether consumers generate purchase intention after being attracted to an Internet meme, as no such research prevails. We employ the value–attitude–behavior model as its theoretical core and discuss how the values formed by consumers under the impact of an Internet meme influence their purchasing behaviors through their attitudes. The participants of the study are Internet users who are habitual to checking Facebook. We adopted convenience sampling and developed 380 valid questionnaires. Structural equation modeling is applied to verify the study’s hypotheses. The research results reveal that utilitarian and hedonic values influence the Purchase Intention through utilitarian and hedonic attitudes. In light of the aforementioned findings, it is suggested that marketers and relevant participants focus on the hedonic value brought by an Internet meme and design fun and witty Internet memes to attract consumers.

The present article focuses on the functioning of specific elements - memes in the Internet communication. They have taken over the internet. Memes are all over Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and it is nearly impossible to log onto these accounts without memes being everywhere. The origin of meme is the biological makeup of an organism gene, which correlates with the thought the ideas could spread like a gene. The internet meme has gained a new usage, it has become a piece of culture which is constantly created and shared by people through its rapid spreading. The internet meme is collectively produced and the meme can evolve and change over time. The current popularity of the meme can be explained by the ease of reading information and the convenience of replicating it. The theoretical thrust of this analysis indicates the usefulness of the notions of multimodal voicing and intertextuality. The article examines the prevalence of Internet memes in a virtual environment, and the role and functions of memes in organizing social interaction and human communication. This article analyzes randomly selected memes. The interest lies in the relationship between image and text, which contributes to concrete interpretive results, and to semiotic interrelation of modes. Memes are a way in our society to share thoughts and ideas. Memes are relatable and the audience thrives for things that they can relate to. Memes are a way of communication in our society, and they will continue to grow and become more popular. The article also discusses the fact that the internet memes are a manifestation of communication of visual society.

Abstract:
Internet memes are a special type of digital content that is shared through social media. They have recently emerged as a popular new format of media communication. They are often multimodal, combining text with images and aim to express humor, irony, sarcasm, or sometimes convey hatred and misinformation. Automatically detecting memes is important since it enables tracking of social and cultural trends and issues related to the spread of harmful content. While memes can take various forms and belong to different categories, such as image macros, memes with labeled objects, screenshots, memes with text out of the image, and funny images, existing datasets do not account for the diversity of meme formats, styles and content. To bridge this gap, we present the PolyMeme dataset, which comprises approximately 27 K memes from four categories. This was collected from Reddit and a part of it was manually labelled into these categories. Using the manual labels, deep learning networks were trained to classify the unlabelled images with an estimated error rate of 7.35%. The introduced meme dataset in combination with existing datasets of regular images were used to train deep learning networks (ResNet, ViT) on meme detection, exhibiting very high accuracy levels (98% on the test set). In addition, no significant gains were identified from the use of regular images containing text.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the place of Internet memes in the structure of the social mythology of the digital world. The authors understand the Internet meme as a communication phenomenon. They characterize it as an online miniformat genre. An Internet meme integrates an image with an ironic text caption for a concise assessment of a situation, state or phenom-enon and visualization of reality. The myth is em-bedded in the semantic structure of the meme, which spreads it to large audiences. In the post-truth era, Internet memes are not only retransmitters of myths, but also actively create a new social my-thology, allowing network users to interpret reality in accordance with their worldview, laid down by mass culture. As a result, the myth becomes a fake, and the Internet meme becomes an effective way of spreading it. Analyzed memes “Karl!” and “The Wrong Guy” as examples of modifying archaic myths and constructing a new social mythology, as well as memes “Ivan the Terrible kills”, “Peter I and Shrek”, “Lenin is a mushroom” as confirmation of the thesis about the transformation of political and historical myths into a fake form.

Meme, as defined in Dawkins' 1976 book 'The Selfish Gene', is "an idea, behaviour or style that spreads from person to person within a culture". Internet meme is an extension of meme, with the defining characteristic being its spread via Internet. While online communities of all cultures generate their own memes, owing to the colossal amount of content in English and the long & widespread adoption of Internet across all strata of society in English-speaking countries, the vast majority of high-impact and well-documented memes have their origin in English-speaking communities. In addition to their spread in the original culture sphere, some of these prominent memes have also crossed the cultural boundaries and entered the parlance of Chinese Internet communities. This paper seeks to give a brief introduction to Internet memes in general, and explore the factors that control and/or facilitate a meme’s ability to enter Chinese communities.

Abstract:
The article deals with German-language Internet memes, which are an actual unit of Internet communication. The possibilities of definition within the framework of various approaches are briefly outlined, typology of Internet memes, as well as their functions. Multimodal verbal-visual static memes addressed to the student audience are the focus of attention. The study was based on materials from the social networks and Internet pages, which were selected by the method of continuous sampling on relevant topics. The addressee determines the choice of topics and the features of their interpretation, which allows considering the Internet meme as a precedent unit with a certain cultural and national connotation. Using both template macros, memes that are found on almost any aspect of student issues, and single-individual macros, the Internet meme gets its distribution, which is facilitated by its ability to evoke an emotional reaction in recipients. The integrity of the meme is made up of content and formal characteristics, the combination of verbal and visual components forms the communicative and pragmatic potential of the meme. This is largely facilitated by means of expressiveness at different levels of the language — morphological, grammatical, syntactic, graphemic. The target audience and discourse largely determine the choice of means used. The analysis showed that at the graphic level, the set of tools is rather limited, while at the level of vocabulary and syntax, a fairly diverse repertoire is used. In most of the examples considered, the visual and verbal components of the meme are in a symbiotic relationship. If, when using a template macro, the picture turns out to be recognizable and decontextualized in each specific situation, then in the case of single-individual macros, interpretation without a verbal component can be difficult. An Internet meme as a holistic artifact has an impact on the recipient, thus realizing its various functions.

Abstract:
The events of 2019—2021 affected the social optimism index and the social well-being of Russians, strengthening the constantly present multidirectional trends towards consolidation and isolation in society. The object of the study is borrowed and appeared in the Runet functioning in the specified period Internet memes that translate the meanings of unity and isolation. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to study new principles of information dissemination and its desirable characteristics in an information-overloaded society, the cognitive potential of the “visual turn” in the humanities, the social significance of the content represented by the studied units, the lack of linguistic, interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical studies in this field. The source of the material is a variety of services and libraries of memes on the Internet. The article describes the current state of Internet meme research in the Russian and European humanities. The article presents the analysis of Internet memes selected in accordance with the given semantic characteristics in their dynamics within the framework of N. A. Zinovieva’s typology, built on six dichotomies (truth — lie, character — event, tradition — innovation, background — figure, image — text, thought — action). Observations on the specifics of the precedent phenomena in the formation and development of Internet memes are presented. The structure of the Internet meme is described. It has a field organization, including a constant core formed by a visual template and the generalized meaning of the Internet meme. The conclusion is made about the relevant features of Internet memes of the ideographic group under study, which determine the features of meme encoding of socially significant information and the translation of socio-cultural meanings.

Abstract:
The article analyzes one of the Internet communication tools that has recently become widespread on social networks – the Internet meme. An Internet meme is a unique communicative unit consisting of a two-level structure: linguistic (verbal) and visual (graphic), which is the creation of network users, offering a certain subtext to the online community. The work describes the path of its origin and development, and also studies the ideas developed in scientific works. Taking into account the media nature of Internet memes and distinguishing them from other types of online messages, the factors influencing their rapid spread and popularization are determined. It is shown that this depends on its quality and competitiveness. It is clear that creating such an Internet meme requires considerable effort on the part of the author: the Internet meme must be creative, interesting, and its idea must be fresh and original. In this regard, it was concluded that some memes «live» on the network for a long time, others are forgotten the next day, others are even ignored, and others are suddenly «reborn» thanks to a random user

Abstract:
The study focuses on teaching the translation of audiovisual memes: comic image/video and text combinations that tend to go viral on the Internet. The key features of a meme are a comic effect resulting from surprise, disrupted expectations, the clash between the text and the video; “viral” expansion across the Internet and other social media. Mastering the skills required to translate such audiovisual content is essential since memes are highly popular on the Internet with all age groups, there are numerous allusions references to the popular memes in the mass media, fiction, movies, and TV series. Teaching audiovisual meme translation shall consist of analyzing the meme properties, building meme comprehension and metacognitive analysis skills, and mastering specific approaches and techniques for meme representation in the source and target languages. An emphasis should be placed on developing the ability to adequately reconstruct meme ecosystems in the source language and find their analogs in the target language as well as the skills required to identify archetypical narratives in the source language and build them in the target language. It is shown that memes have some similarities to set expressions and proverbs. The meme translation curriculum shall build the ability to find and translate set expressions and proverbs in audiovisual works. It is also shown that translation teachers should have specialized training in teaching the translation of memes as a special type of audiovisual content. It can be implemented in the format of short seminars/webinars, or within the teacher further education framework.

Abstract:
Internet memes are a popular and long-standing genre of discourse on social media platforms, used to express everything from emotional states to political opinions. Dancygier and Vandelanotte (2017) define internet memes as intertextual, multimodal discourses that combine text with images. In order to capture and compare these rapidly-changing discourses, we propose a descriptive dual classification system for memes with two components: meme composition and multimodal quality. Meme composition categorizes memes by their structure—beyond the individual images they employ—and thus explains how memes recontextualize images and text to create new meanings. Multimodal quality serves to describe the way(s) that the text interacts with the image in the meme: as a caption, label, and/or utterance. Combining one meme composition with one or more multimodal qualities classifies an individual meme structurally and provides a basis for explaining its intertextuality, modality, and meaning-making. We apply the dual classification system to English language data collected in its naturally-occurring context on the social media platform Instagram from 2019 to 2021. Analysis of these data shows that the dual classification system is a flexible and robust approach which provides a vocabulary for discussing the creative agency exerted by meme creators in a wide range of communities. We argue that the dual classification system affords researchers the ability to study memes linguistically across a variety of platforms and over time.

Abstract:
The article analyzes Soviet symbols that are present in Internet memes — an important, developing part of modern communication. Despite the fact that the Internet meme has many definitions, the article presents a clear, heuristic view that considers the Internet meme as an element of the emerging metalanguage. Such an understanding is possible due to the structure of an Internet meme, which contains an unchangeable part (language) and a changing part in every new picture (speech). This optics allows us to consider an Internet meme as a saying available for analysis.Using this provision, the article examines the existence and functioning of Soviet symbols in Internet memes. They are usually the subject of various studies of cultural and historical memory. Despite the great attention paid to the Soviet memory discourse, researchers mainly focus on the confrontation of positive and critical memory about the Soviet experience and on the construction of such memory. The author puts forward the thesis about the presence of Soviet symbols outside this discourse and its consolidation in cultural memory and everyday communication on the Internet. The involvement of Soviet symbols can be found outside the paradigm of memory construction and any explicit political discourses. At the same time, Soviet symbols regularly appear in new Internet memes, acting as a universal, understandable code of culture. Symbols such as the hammer and sickle, the red star, the May Day demonstration, figures of leaders and many others serve as a matrix of understanding for everyday communication, purified from purely historical discourses.Using various examples, the article demonstrates symbols, seemingly irrelevant to a young audience, which are successfully used in Internet memes that play out a variety of situations. This approach makes it possible to implement the interdisciplinary paradigm in the studies of cultural memory in the digital environment, using the methods of cultural theorists and the methods of media researchers.

Abstract:
The Internet meme as a unit of information and semantic exchange, having a polycode structure and the status of a precedent text, has a high linguo-creative potential. The linguistic creativity of a meme is formed due to the mechanisms of indirectly derived nomination, which provides a multi-layered cognitive structure and is conditioned by the type and topic of discourse, which determines its wide demand and life cycle. The analysis of the array of Internet memes testifies to the stability of those units whose content plan is permanently relevant for users, corresponds to their cultural base. At the same time, according to the authors, it is the linguo-creative potential of the meme, the ability to change, that provides a long time cycle of its existence. In the article, based on representative material, possible directions of meme creative development are identified, including the expansion of the component composition of the original unit; replacement by another unit within the lexico-semantic group; actualization of evaluative or expressive components of its semantics. Memes with the dominance of the verbal part demonstrate great linguistic and creative potential, which leads to high variability in the selection of illustrations, the possibility of textual transformations. The text part in such memes freely participates in the contamination of memes, the creation of metamemes. Such memes can demonstrate great potential in generating new communicative units, going beyond meme accounts and Internet discourse. At the functional level, the linguo-creative potential is manifested in the use of memes in media headlines, in business account posts, in naming, advertising texts and TV products (including TV series). The authors come to the conclusion that anchoring in discourses of various types is also one of the key factors that allow a meme to remain in the information space for a long time.

Abstract:
The article studies the phenomenon of the Internet-meme as the main structural unit of the modern media discourse, performing the functions of integration, translation, representation, information, as well as emotional and phatic functions. The main characteristics of the Internet meme as a media image, which has been considered for a long time as an Internet phenomenon of the game plan, aimed at achieving a comic effect, are analyzed. The paper applies a semiotic-linguistic approach to the analysis of forming Internet-memes, allowing to understand how any sign turns into a meme as well as narrows the object of the analysis to communication phenomena expressed through verbal and non-verbal means. The mechanism of compression is considered as a linguo-cognitive technique for creating Internet-memes. Firstly, the compression mechanism involves the simplification of the text of the meme and its surface structure according to the law of language economy, the requirements of the genre, and the characteristics of the information carrier, which leads to an increase in the information content of language units and the elimination of components that can be restored using the non-verbal part of the text without changing its informative side. That is why there is a frequent use of various kinds of elliptical structures in Internet memes. Secondly, compression allows reflecting colloquial language in Internet memes through the use of compressed units and constructions. At the same time, the mechanism of compression in Internet memes inevitably leads to an increasing role of background knowledge and initiates the process of inference, which is necessary for the recipient to understand the author’s implication.

Abstract:
Internet memes of the type composed of an image macro and text, have a strong form-meaning correlation that is shared among users of social media. Their frequency of usage and the immediacy of their broad reach around the world make them an interesting field of investigation for linguistic studies. I will argue in this article that Internet memes resemble linguistic signs. Users develop a literacy, i.e. a command of their usage through convention and shared usage history. Popular Internet memes can be found in a multiplicity of variations, where details of the shown picture are changed, while the general mood or topic of the meme, mostly expressed in the caption, remains broadly the same. This article will discuss cases where the development of meme variations works along the lines of known cognitive mechanisms like metaphor and metonymy, and their prerequisites, like abstraction. Some meme variations can be represented as grammaticalisation paths that lead to the emergence of grammatical features like morphemes.

Abstract:
Within the framework of Internet communication, a new element representing a creolized text - an Internet meme - is increasingly attracting attention. The Internet meme is interesting for linguistics because it is a polycode formation: the combination of verbal and non-verbal components within one text increases the intensity of its pragmatic and semantic functions. An Internet meme can convey content using a minimal amount of linguistic and visual means. Code-switching on Internet communication is certainly an intriguing phenomenon under-researched in texts of different types and formats. The aim of the paper is to identify the pragmatic functions of code-switching in Russian memes functioning in the Vkontakte social network. The novelty of this work is that the study of pragmatic functions of code-switching in memes as specific creolized texts from social networks has not been considered. The research methodology includes both qualitative (pragmatic, contextual and cultural-linguistic analysis) and quantitative methods (descriptive statistics). The data for the study are 158 code-switches, which fulfill four main pragmatic functions: nominative, emotive, addressee-oriented, and that of a language game. The results of the study prove that code-switching in memes is most often used for language game. The identified types of creolization of memes as a polycode text show that the most frequent in the Internet space is a complex polycode meme with code-switching, while media-centric polycode texts with code-switching are not represented in the sample.

Abstract:
Internet memes refer to memes that are spread through the Internet, from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, or news sources. The main purpose of internet memes are for humorous or to entertain the readers. However, not all people can easily interpret a meme. This phenomenon appears to be the case because several internet memes contain implied meaning or implicature due to the limited caption available and the picture it brings which has its own character and representation. The purpose of this research is to describe the implicature in the internet memes by using Grice's theory in the perspective semiotics and pragmatics due to all of contexts, symbol, icon, and index in the memes influence the interpretation of the implied meaning and the intention. In this analysis, the writers uses qualitative method. The data were taken from the three meme websites: 9gag.com, knowyourmeme.com and memecenter.com. The data collected have been completely analyzed based on the research questions. The results show the most dominant memes spread of using conventional implicature. There are six categories found based on its idea and representation; they are (1) masculinity, (2) personal experience, (3) loneliness, (4) social events, (5) false analogy and (6) sarcasm. Then, there are at least two contexts that influence the implication of each meme, and the most dominant influence is the social contexts.

Abstract:
The article deals with the specifics of Internet memes, which allow them to act as a tool of social thinking. Starting from the idea of A.A. Dydrov that Internet memes are able to represent dystopias, the author, firstly, considers the suitability of meme content to reflect the complex content of dystopias formed as mac-ro-narratives of the culture of printed books and cinema, and secondly, assesses the possi-bilities of critical social reflection in the pro-cess of diffusion of Internet memes, correct-ing its form. The social cognitiveness of a meme, understood as the ability to form collective assessments of social events, can be enhanced by its elasticity, a flexible combination of the constituent elements of its media text, referring through various rhetorical techniques to the voluminous content exter-nal to the meme. The processes of diffusion of popular Internet memes, including sleep and the awakening of “sleeping beauties”, provide time for its reassembly through references to global and local contexts, increasing its critical potential. The diversity of social media con-texts and the distribution of reassembly by translators and modifiers lead to a clarification of the content of dystopian memes. Thus, meme content can be considered as a process of collective thinking about society, working out the understanding of the routine of new technologies in the semiotic codes of dystopias.

In 2013 Richard Dawkins, the author of The Selfish Gene (1976), characterized that memes on the internet as a human creativity. The pictures in the meme are tailored to the user’s feelings and become the feeling of society. The concept of "meme" was introduced in 1976, and with the development of the internet, memes have gradually become a cultural phenomenon on social media. As a semantic collection, memes possess unique meanings that can create a distinct hidden information space for those who use them. During dissemination, individuals who do not understand the meaning of a meme are filtered out, forming a group of those who understand it. Within this group, people may develop a sense of belonging. In order to investigate whether Chinese internet users experience a sense of belonging when using memes and explore the relationship between user engagement and the strength of this sense of belonging when using memes, this study employed a questionnaire-based approach. By analyzing the level of meme usage participation and the sense of belonging experienced by Chinese internet users, the research sought to uncover the correlation between these two factors. The most common memes are those that refer to mass and Internet culture. In social networks, their main communicative goals are entertainment, reflection of current events, and increasing personal rating. The policy of the social network and the peculiarities of the meme culture determine the cooperative speech strategy they represent: even when the meme is part of some conflictogenic tactics, the negative reaction is not its main goal.

Chistopashin’s site. They have developed a set of criteria relevant for the analysis of environmental internet memes as complex linguistic and semiotic formations. The aim of the study was to identify the specific features of the semiotic organization of environmental internet memes and establish the dominant semiotic code that determines the conceptual content of the meme. It is shown that the Russian-speaking segment of environmental communication through memes has its own thematic and genre specificity. Environmental internet memes usually rely on the use of media semiotic codes, where the meme includes both text and illustration. Less frequently, memes are created based on narrative semiotic codes, where the visual component illustrates the beginning, climax, or end of a story. The verbal component is dominant when borrowing viral visual templates. The main stylistic device in environmental internet memes, alongside irony and the effect of false expectation, is linguistic play. Semiotic analysis of internet memes has shown that the combination of verbal and visual signs is typical for the media segment of environmental internet communication.

Abstract:
As memes have become ubiquitous and embedded in the Internet and popular culture, a growing body of literature has investigated incorporating digital humor in the form of Internet memes as a new approach to increase learners’ motivation and engagement. This paper conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to examine the impact of humor and meme-related pedagogical activities on language learning and to provide guidelines for incorporating meme-based learning in language classrooms. It seeks to address the following question: What is the effect of meme-related pedagogical activities in EFL/ESL classrooms? The revealed findings should encourage instructors to adopt this innovative approach to meet the needs and expectations of today’s language learners. The results show that using meme-based learning in language classrooms increases learners’ motivation and interest in the topic; creates a positive, fun, interesting, and engaging learning environment; enhances retention and understanding of new concepts; and simplifies complex concepts and ideas. In light of the review’s findings, the paper suggests practical and instructional implications for implementing memes appropriately and effectively.

Abstract:
Now the Internet is one of the main means of social communication and information interchange, which is carried out within the framework of the information field created with special technologies. Undoubtedly, in the hands of skilled manipulators the Internet can turn into a rather powerful and dangerous psychological weapon attacking people’s mind. One of such means of mass influence is the meme with national and political content. These comic pic-tures with laconic posts have become the cause for initiation of numerous legal proceedings. The purpose of the re-search is to investigate the opinion range that reflect peculiarities of the youth reaction concerning the Internet-meme with the national and political background and their tolerance level. The scientific novelty of the work is that the author examines the features of Internet memes with national connotations and approaches to identify offensive connota-tions in them. Besides, to reveal the degree of influence of the Internet-memes on recipients and their personal assess-ment of this information and communication phenomenon, anonymous questioning was carried out. The meme is a joke, sneer or criticism expressed by means of certain language means: more often, it is a picture with a laconic phrase spread throughout the Internet by various means. It usually causes particular interest and emotional response in the recipients. It has a certain urgent and topical problem in its background. Thus, the Internet-meme represents certain latent mechanism of speech influence. The basis for criminal prosecution for distributing memes online is primarily Ar-ticle 282 of the Criminal Code of the RF concerning extremism. At present, approaches to linguistic examination of memes are just being developed; it is often hard to prove the presence of offensive and extremist implications in the media object. The analysis of the studied information allows to establish that a meme whose propagation can cause legal proceedings and which represents certain danger to our society should possess the following characteristics: 1) aggression appeal, 2) offensive content, 3) propagation via mass-media and the Internet, 4) net relapse. The carried out experiment leads to the conclusion that Internet-memes are psychological means effective enough to influence peo-ple. Nevertheless, its influence is not equivocal and depends on the recipient’s mood. Undoubtedly, the issue of drawing up criteria for the linguistic analysis of memes to determine their danger to society is extremely relevant.

Abstract:
Introduction. The goal of this study is to gain new insights into meme discourse by reconstructing its linguocognitive model, based on the properties and characteristics of memes, relevant for Internet communicators.Methodology and sources. In order to reconstruct the meme-discourse model the authors combine the method of linguocognitive modelling with the technique of fragmenting the respondents' answers into motivational explications as units of measurement for the obtained data. The meme discourse model is based on the answers of 100 students at I.I. Polzunov Altai State Technical University – “Why do you use memes when communicating?” The choice of respondents is determined by their studying at the Faculty of Information Technology and being advanced Internet users. Results and discussion. Motivational explications of Internet users of why they resort to memes to communicate serve as language material for inferring cognitive foundations for using memes. The most significant cognitive foundation for the use of memes by communicators is the effectiveness of the impact they make (47.3 %). The second cognitive foundation is related to communication productivity: memes help to establish and maintain communication (20,9 %). The third one is the functionality of memes, which facilitates the transmission of content (17,1 %). The fourth one is the format suitable for conveying thoughts and feelings (14,7 %). Based on the concept of discourse, proposed by T. van Dijk and the reconstructed model the authors gain new insights into the nature of meme-discourse.Conclusion. The main conceptual conclusion regarding meme-discourse is that, as a complex communicative phenomenon, it appears to be an important component of sociocultural interaction for its participants. Both the goal and the result of this interaction is to create a positive type of social context maintained and preserved through mutual understanding between the communicants. Memes facilitate finding common points of contact serving as a “package” of positive emotions for communicators’ thoughts and feelings. In this way communicants produce meme-discourse as an actual referential context to share their worldview.

Abstract:
After defining Internet memes and their place within broader popular culture, this paper examines the methodology and interpretation of a large-scale collection of Internet memes used by the KnowYourMeme database. By observing the changed context in which Internet memes are created, shared, or forgotten, questions are raised about the formation of meme cultural memory in cyberspace, leading to critical commentary on the ways in which they are collected. By analyzing the heritization of Internet memes, this paper addresses the following issues: the formation of the future meme heritage, scope of cultural memory in cyberspace, redefinition of remembering and forgetting within the panmnemonic tendencies of online heritage projects. Using the KnowYourMeme database as an example, the problems of cyberspace heritage are discussed, and the different online projects dealing with Internet memes as heritage are compared. By defining ?on-the-fly? memory, which indicates the simultaneity of the process of creating and preserving heritage, this paper offers a critical review of the existing cyber projects of ?saving everything?.

Abstract:
The figure of Ahok is widely depicted in various communication media, both conventional media and modern digital-based media such as memes on the internet that are widespread in society. Memes themselves as communication media created by individuals are very anonymous, widely used by internet users, especially social media users. The emergence of memes as a medium for messages on various social media has increasingly added material for netizens (internet citizens) – the term for internet users – who are creative in creating their social messages. In some cases, memes are often used to communicate a special message with the concept of humor or satire. The presentation of content about Ahok also varies, ranging from trivial satire to political problems that have become meme studies. Packed in a very diverse and countless number of content studies, Ahok's character is often said to be rude and does not know manners. This research then focuses on the depiction of Ahok as the Governor of DKI Jakarta in internet memes. This research was conducted using C.S. Peirce's semiotic analysis method. It was found that the depiction of Ahok as a leader in internet memes is a leader who is used to speaking harshly without etiquette, Ahok as a leader who has difficulty respecting the feelings of others, even Ahok, a Chinese and Christian leader who is not worthy enough to lead, still clings to the meaning of signs in some Internet memes that have been analyzed. But on the other hand, in other collections of texts on internet memes, Ahok is described as a brave, charismatic, determined, honest, and unyielding figure. Even Ahok is shown as a leader who was missed because of his performance achievements and success in leading.

Abstract:
The study is an exploratory research aimed at testing methods to examine conflict indicators of Russian media discourse. At this stage of the research, the Internet-memes analysis was conducted. The article explores theories at the interface of conflict and media studies and provides a critical review of contemporary meme research. The authors argue that memes have huge manipulating capacity and can influence their viewers provoking social unrest. We suggest that the study of conflict-memes can contribute to the research of social contradiction discourse. The study also developed the method to analyze conflict indicators in Internet-memes including identification of the explicit and implicit conflict signs. The study found the visual and text connection in creolized memes that creates conflict context. We analyzed a sample of conflict memes based on the subject, topic, and conflict-type. A pilot-research showed that memes with conflict signs take a permanent place in meme-discourse. The authors believe that the conflict is one of the most important socio-cultural design techniques. We suggest further research of its presence in different media discourse formats.

Abstract:
Abstract Internet memes are an example of the trend of replicability and spread of discourses through the Net within today’s participatory culture. On paper, memes are instances of humorous discourse that abound on the internet, are replicated or altered, and then transmitted to other users. However, in this paper the focus is not on its humorous side, but on how every single stage of meme communication entails a greater or lesser impact on the user’s self-concept, self-awareness and overall identity. The paper addresses five stages of meme communication and possible ways in which these stages influence the user’s identity.
