Abstract:
In addition to the problems that may occur in the Internet, the people who test mobile internet services confront additional challenges due to the wireless environment. If something goes wrong, it is very problematic for a tester to determine exactly where the error occurred and the reason why it occurred. Is it the software in the telephone that does not work properly, is the GPRS link stable, is the core network of the Internet working as it should, or is there something wrong at the server? The staff at Sony Ericsson has major difficulties determining where the origin of a problem is. They often simply know that something is not working. The major effort is often to detect the source of the actual problem rather than solving it. The PlayNow service provided by Sony Ericsson will be used as a reference service in this master’s thesis project. The PlayNow service is currently used for distributing ring signals. It is built on Internet standards, but depends on GSM’s specific features both for distribution and for e-commerce which makes it hard to test using existing web test tools. This Master’s Thesis examines the difficulties in establishing robust IP traffic links between a server and a mobile telephone. It examines the entire communication path between the mobile telephone and the server, and focus on how to detect (potential) errors. Within this project, development of a test tool is included. It supports features necessary for testing the reference service PlayNow. This report covers many different technologies within the mobile internet such as GSM, GPRS, and mobile IP. Moreover, the normal infrastructure of the Internet will also be considered; as well as how the different parts interact in an environment consisting of a mobile Internet with GPRS. A major part of the project has been evaluation of the communication link between a mobile device and a server. Additionally, some efforts have focused on developing the new test tool.

Abstract:
Internet banking services have faced a considerable expansion in terms of the number of users in the last few years. This makes Internet as a financial service delivery platform witness a number challenges. One of these is offering better-quality services to existing customers as the quality of service is a key factor in the success of any organisation. Previous research studies indicate that a strong theory to understand this form of service is lacking. A comprehensive review of previous and contemporary literature on service quality suggests the need for the development of a valid instrument for measuring service quality from the end-user perspective in the specific context of Internet banking services. This research study proposes a revised and modified SERVQUAL model which incorporates several variables that reflects the industry-specific attributes of Internet banking services. A survey based research is used to collect primary data on the basis of Internet banking services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A multiple regression analysis is employed to examine the influence of the adapted determinants on service quality. Focus-group interviews are also conducted as a follow-up to the questionnaire study. The findings of both fieldworks indicate that reliability, responsiveness, website design, and personalisation determine service quality in the Internet banking context. This study presents the main findings derived from the research model which can be used by a wide range of financial institutions, which make use of the Internet in their business dealings, to support each organisation’s decision-making processes. Also, this model can be used as a blueprint for an organisation’s strategic planning. In addition to the research model, the researcher employs Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) that reveals a large of number of implications for the quality of service, which were not obvious prior to undertaking the research. The knowledge of such implications will help managers and decision-makers when they are required to allocate resources to certain tasks or functions.

Kota, S. L. (Sastri L. ). "Quality of Service for Broadband Satellite Internet - ATM and IP Services." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2003. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514268865.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The current Internet infrastructure must be architected to handle future media-rich, and content rich applications. The success of applications such as video-on-demand, multicast and content distribution depends on Quality of Service and bandwidth guarantees. Over the years, the Internet has encompassed many changes in traffic profiles and applications, in bandwidths and utilization, but the future Internet infrastructure necessitates a very different architecture supporting Quality of Service (QoS). A satellite, distinguished by features such as global coverage, bandwidth flexibility, broadcast, multicast, and reliability, is an excellent candidate to provide broadband integrated Internet access. The aim of this thesis is to explore suitability of satellite technologies for broadband Internet services with significant emphasis on the question of defining, assessing, and developing QoS models for satellite ATM and IP broadband networks with and without onboard processing. For the satellite Internet, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) performance is degraded due to long propagation delays, link errors, and bandwidth asymmetry. In this thesis, for satellite ATM, fundamental questions such as buffer requirements, TCP/ATM efficiency, fairness, and multiple access are addressed through extensive simulations in a quantitative way. Buffer designs for TCP over satellite ATM Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) service are performed. A buffer size equal to half the round trip delay-bandwidth product of the TCP connections provides high efficiency for TCP over satellite UBR. An extensive TCP analysis via simulation study for various TCP mechanisms and end system policies show that for satellite environment end system policies are more important than switch drop policies in terms of efficiency and fairness for World Wide Web traffic. A bandwidth allocation scheme is proposed and analytical model for supporting voice and video service over a broadband satellite network is developed. The study results demonstrate that non-contiguous allocation can afford higher gain in uplink utilizations. In this thesis, for the first time, Integrated Services and Differentiated Services based QoS architectures for broadband satellite IP networks are proposed and analyzed. In multimedia applications where User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is used along with TCP, a fair excess bandwidth allocation is not possible because TCP is congestion sensitive whereas UDP is congestion insensitive. An extensive simulation model is developed to study the effect of precedence levels for reserved rate utilization and fairness with different buffer management policies. The simulation results indicate that three levels of precedence are required for better utilization. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) over Satellite network has been proposed and a simulation model developed to study the throughput performance impacts for TCP and UDP. The traffic engineering of MPLS facilitates efficient and reliable network design to optimize the utilization of network resources and enhance the network QoS. A novel Code Division Multiple Access based Spread ALOHA single code multiple access scheme for broadband satellite return channel is proposed as an alternative to Multifrequency-Time Division Multiple Access based Digital Video Broadcasting-Return Channel via Satellite protocol. It is shown through Monte Carlo simulations that throughput for Spread ALOHA One Long Code equivalent to packet length, is better than Spread ALOHA One Code in which spreading sequence repeats every symbol. The reduction of throughput due to multi-user interference for different number of users is shown. Further research on QoS architectures, performance models for TCP enhancements, interworking functions, interoperability, and standardization efforts is included.

Arnaud, Jean. "Performance, disponibilité et coût de services Internet adaptatifs." Phd thesis, Grenoble, 2010. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00529936.

Abstract:

Kamarulzaman, Yusniza. "Adoption of Internet shopping for travel services." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2006. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55606/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study explores consumers' adoption of Internet shopping in the context of UK travel services. The key objective is to identify the profile of Internet shoppers and the antecedents of Internet shopping adoption for travel services. The study proposes a model for the prediction of Internet shopping adoption, drawing upon Davis' (1989) Technology Acceptance Model with the inclusion of individual characteristics, perceived risk and trust. The model identifies the structural relationships among the eight constructs (i.e. perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use, innovativeness, involvement, opinion leadership, perceived risk, trust and adoption), which were examined through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with AMOS. The study employs a multi-methodology approach, which involves focus group discussions at the exploratory stage and a questionnaire survey in the data collection stage. The final survey was of a screened sample of 500 respondents who had purchased travel services online. A total of 299 qualified respondents from all over the UK completed the online survey. The descriptive results present a profile of travel e-shoppers in terms of demographic, geodemographic and buying patterns. The SEM tested the hypothesised relationships among the constructs, as postulated in the model. Nine of the hypothesised links were supported and six were rejected. Eventually, a robust model that has statistical and explanatory power was confirmed. The results explicitly clarified several key contributions to marketing theory and for the travel and tourism industry. For example, it was demonstrated that perceived usefulness is the key determinant of Internet shopping adoption decisions. Also, consumer innovativeness is the key influence on Internet shopping adoption at the personal level, followed by consumer involvement in the shopping process. The study also reveals three new relationships, between opinion leadership and perceived ease-of-use, consumer involvement and ease-of-use and consumer innovativeness and trust, which have not been examined empirically by previous research. By identifying the primary drivers of Internet shopping adoption for travel services, the study contributes to and extends the understanding of the Internet as a medium for commercial use in the B2C arena as well as expanding the literature on new technology adoption.

A holistic consideration of the qualitative composition of descriptive artefacts in the Internet of Services through specifically designed service platforms increases the quality of experience for the users of the offered services. In this dissertation, the existing methods for the recognition, propagation and improvement of quality metrics in service-oriented architectures are systematically included in methods related to these increased requirements. The work delivers two scientific contributions. The first one encompasses a concept for the incremental improvement of quality of services via the use of runtime mechanisms for the dynamic description and rating of non-functional properties. The second one carries a definition of an abstract interplay of architecture patterns and processes for the contractually safeguarded guarantee of quality of service properties in service ecosystems in the form of a reference architecture

Abstract:

Abstract:
The technology that governs the Telecommunications today is based on the Intelligent Networks (IN). But we can see that the Internet Telephony is emerging rapidly and that it has good chances to become the basis for the next generation telecommunication networks. There are two major competing standards for Internet Telephony - H.323 protocol stack and SIP. This thesis focuses on SIP and the Value Added Services in the SIP based Internet Telephony. It describes and analyzes two existing SIP based approaches to the VAS implementation and presents new hybrid SIP-IN approach based on the concept of reusing the existing IN nodes. The major part of the study is devoted to the design of a lightweight protocol, built as SIP extension, providing for VAS in the hybrid SIP-IN environment. To illustrate the hybrid SIP-IN approach to VAS implementation and the SIPext protocol operation the execution of the Freephone and the Call Distribution services is described. Finally the functional modules supporting the SIPext communication in a hybrid SIP-IN architecture are outlined.

Abstract:
The term Internet of Things (IOT) describes an emerging global, Internet-based information service architecture for RFID-tagged items (Radio-Frequency Identification). In the vision of its proponents, this IOT will facilitate information exchange about goods in global supply chain networks, increase transparency, and enhance their efficiency. Name Services for the IOT are distributed systems that serve the following fundamental lookup function: Given an identifier for a real-world object, e.g., an Electronic Product Code (EPC), they return a list of Internet addresses of services, which offer additional information about this object. This thesis discusses the information security challenges involved in the design and use of an IOT Name Service (IOTNS). Our main contributions are the following: First, the requirements for an IOTNS are collected and discussed, including multilateral security and the client perspective, which have been neglected in IOT standards and research literature so far. Second, we conduct a detailed security analysis of the most influential standard Object Naming Service (ONS). This extends our previous article that initiated this new research line in the field of RFID and IOT security. Third, enhancements to ONS are discussed, which could mitigate some of the ONS security shortcomings in an evolutionary way without completely abandoning the established standard. In particular, we describe an architecture and prototype for Multipolar ONS, which reduces international dependency on a single country controlling the ONS Root. Fourth, we present a new IOTNS architecture based on Distributed Hash Tables (DHT) and its implementation on the research platform PlanetLab. This architecture is shown to offer enhanced overall security compared to ONS while delivering equivalent or even better functionality, scalability, and performance.

Abstract:
The continuing growth of internet services such as streaming videos, browsing websites or generally exchanging data has drawn the attention of academic researchers, industry, and the general public towards their environmental impact. Past assessments of this impact come to differing results due to the complexity of information and communication technology systems, including networks, data centres and user devices. Assuming a life-cycle perspective, this thesis reduces some of this uncertainty and thus works towards more robust assessments and ultimately decision-making. The first part of this thesis consists of modelling the energy consumption of routers and fibre-optical equipment that comprise the networks. As a result, new estimates of the energy intensity of networks are made, that can be used to derive the energy consumption of data transfer through the network. In t he second part, the energy consumption by data centres and use devices is included , which combined give a comprehensive assessment of the system end-to-end. One chapter is dedicated to the detailed analysis of the varying environmental footprint between different user devices and types of media. A separate chapter then develops and show-cases a more integrated assessment for an complete digital service over one year and demonstrates several new approaches to reducing uncertainty around use r device and access network energy consumption. The methods and models presented in this thesis are applicable to a wide range of services and contribute to more robust estimates of the energy consumption. The aim is to enable sustainability practitioners to carry out environmental assessments of digital services.

Abstract:
The performance of Internet-based services depends on many server-side, client-side, and network related factors. Often, the interaction among the factors or their effect on service performance is not known or well-understood. The complexity of these services makes it difficult to develop analytical models. Lack of models impedes network management tasks, such as predicting performance while planning for changes to service infrastructure, or diagnosing causes of poor performance. We posit that we can use statistical causal methods to model performance for Internet-based services and facilitate performance related network management tasks. Internet-based services are well-suited for statistical learning because the inherent variability in many factors that affect performance allows us to collect comprehensive datasets that cover service performance under a wide variety of conditions. These conditional distributions represent the functions that govern service performance and dependencies that are inherent in the service infrastructure. These functions and dependencies are accurate and can be used in lieu of analytical models to reason about system performance, such as predicting performance of a service when changing some factors, finding causes of poor performance, or isolating contribution of individual factors in observed performance. We present three systems, What-if Scenario Evaluator (WISE), How to Improve Performance (HIP), and Network Access Neutrality Observatory (NANO), that use statistical causal methods to facilitate network management tasks. WISE predicts performance for what-if configurations and deployment questions for content distribution networks. For this, WISE learns the causal dependency structure among the latency-causing factors, and when one or more factors is changed, WISE estimates effect on other factors using the dependency structure. HIP extends WISE and uses the causal dependency structure to invert the performance function, find causes of poor performance, and help answers questions about how to improve performance or achieve performance goals. NANO uses causal inference to quantify the impact of discrimination policies of ISPs on service performance. NANO is the only tool to date for detecting destination-based discrimination techniques that ISPs may use. We have evaluated these tools by application to large-scale Internet-based services and by experiments on wide-area Internet. WISE is actively used at Google for predicting network-level and browser-level response time for Web search for new datacenter deployments. We have used HIP to find causes of high-latency Web search transactions in Google, and identified many cases where high-latency transactions can be significantly mitigated with simple infrastructure changes. We have evaluated NANO using experiments on wide-area Internet and also made the tool publicly available to recruit users and deploy NANO at a global scale.

Abstract:
The Internet has grown enormously since the introduction of the World Wide Web in the early 90's. The evolution and wide spread deployment of cellular networks have contributed to make the Internet accessible to more people in more places. The cellular networks of today offer data rates high enough for most Internet services. Even so, the service quality experienced by the users is often lower than in wired networks. The performance of TCP has a large impact on user experience. Therefore, we investigate TCP in cellular networks and propose functionality to improve the situation for TCP. We have studied sources of delay and data loss, such as link layer retransmissions, queuing, and handover. Measurements were conducted in a GSM/GPRS testbed. The results indicate that TCP interact efficiently with the GSM link layer protocol in most cases. From experiments of queuing in GPRS, we conclude that with a smaller buffer delay is reduced significantly, but that TCP throughput is about the same as with a larger buffer. Furthermore, we propose an improved buffer management when a connection loses all its resources to traffic with higher priority. We also propose a scheme for data forwarding to avoid negative impact on TCP during handover for WINNER, a research system that was used to test ideas for LTE. The achievable data rates in cellular networks are limited by inter-cell interference that vary over the cell. Inter-cell interference can be mitigated with Coordinated Multipoint techniques (CoMP), techniques that currently are being standardized for LTE-Advanced. System wide CoMP is, however, not an option, since it would be too resource consuming. In order to limit the required resources for CoMP, we propose an approach to select a subset of users for CoMP that is based on user experience. Simulation results indicate that user experience, represented with application utility,  and fairness are improved compared to if only rate is considered in the user selection.

Over the past five years, mobile Internet services in Japan have seen major expansion as a result of collaboration between mobile operators acting as mobile portal providers, and their complementors, namely, content providers. However, the content business is currently under pressure to become profitable, and major players have found it difficult to differentiate their services from competitors In other words, service has become commoditized, which has resulted in a shift to the mature stage. This thesis suggests Web services as a solution to overcoming the commoditization of mobile Internet services and spurring new development in the industry. This emerging technology allows users to create a combination of Web resources through two fundamental approaches that lead to an innovation. The Web service requester approach enables integration of a variety of Web services as complementary assets from their business partners into their content. System Dynamics modeling methodology is used to examine how Web service requesters could promote product and process innovation as well as outsourcing. The analyses indicate that it is critical to adopt a different strategy under different scenarios of Web services diffusion, taking into consideration the requesters' dependence on Web service providers. The Web service provider approach offers an excellent opportunity to create distribution channels for services. Two case studies are analyzed in depth to understand how the subject companies took advantage of being a Web service provider with the support of complementors as well as users to promote innovation. Finally, suggestions are made for how the mobile industry value chain could evolve through Web services implementations, and policy
(cont.) recommendations are offered for major stakeholders. Web services will likely enable close collaboration between players in the industry, including Web service providers, Web service requesters, and toolkit developers, all of which should see increasing value, which leads to further evolution of the mobile Internet industry.

Taaghol, Pouya. "Multiple access protocols for mixed services wireless packet communications." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1999. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/844476/.

Full text
Abstract:
Packet communications have increasingly become popular since the launch of the first ever packet-switched network, the ARPANET. Evolution of such networks resulted in creation of the Internet, the global packet-switched network. Amongst the well-known advantages of packet-switching are service transparency, cost-effectiveness, and high system capacity. A natural pathway will incorporate tetherless mobility features to packet services. The key component to realisation of wireless packet communication is the multiple access technology (the subject of this thesis), capable of optimum sharing of scarce radio resources amongst a diverse set of packetized information sources. Based on core features of packet multiple access protocols, a classification is presented by which most proposed protocols could be mapped into. For mixed services, two equivalent offered loads, namely ''access load" and "traffic load", are derived. The former can be used for design, optimisation, and stabilisation of the access mechanism, whilst the latter is to evaluate the overall system performance. The proposed normalised offered loads are found accurate and instrumental in predicting and designing packet access protocols for mixed services. "Statistical upper-bounds" for packet access protocols are derived (both for random access and general access mechanisms), based on which an "efficiency factor" is defined to evaluate and compare merits of protocols against each other. Conventionally, analysis of resource-sharing systems with mixed services (such as multiple access protocols) involve multidimensional Markov chains which become quite intractable for more than two service types. In order to avoid multidimensional Markov analysis, an analytical method called "Aggregate Source Modelling" is proposed by means of which various service types are aggregated into a representative service type. The proposed method is deployed to analyse various queueing and multiple access scenarios. Finally, a series of multiple access protocols are presented for adapting real-time and non-real-time packet services to existing cellular and satellite systems. For evaluation purposes, the proposed statistical models of packet services (such as FTP, E- mail, WWW, packet voice, and so forth) are used throughout the thesis. These models have components of various statistical distributions, namely, Poisson (Exponential), lognormal, Pareto, Cauchy, Gaussian, Geometric, and Hyper-Exponential. Extensive discrete-time simulation models have been developed for evaluation purposes.

Gupta, Minaxi. "Quality-consciousness in Large-scale Content Distribution in the Internet." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/4766.

Full text
Abstract:
Content distribution is the primary function of the Internet today. Technologies like multicast and peer-to-peer networks hold the potential to serve content to large populations in a scalable manner. While multicast provides an efficient transport mechanism for one-to-many and many-to-many delivery of data in an Internet environment, the peer-to-peer networks allow scalable content location and retrieval among large groups of users in the Internet. Incorporating quality-consciousness in these technologies is necessary to enhance the overall experience of clients. This dissertation focuses on the architectures and mechanisms to enhance multicast and peer-to-peer content distribution through quality-consciousness. In particular, the following aspects of quality-consciousness are addressed: 1) client latency, 2) service differentiation, and 3) content quality. Data analysis shows that the existing multicast scheduling algorithms behave unfairly when the access conditions for the popular files changes. They favor the popular files while penalizing the files whose access conditions have not changed. To maintain the client latency for all files under dynamic access conditions we develop a novel multicast scheduling algorithm that requires no change in server provisioning. Service differentiation is a desirable functionality for both multicast and peer-to-peer networks. For multicast, we design a scalable and low overhead service differentiation architecture. For peer-to-peer networks, we focus on a protocol to provide different levels of service to peers based on their contributions in the system. The ability to associate reliable reputations with peers in a peer-to-peer network is a useful feature of these networks. Reliable reputations can help establish trust in these networks and hence improve content quality. They can also be used as a substrate for a service differentiation scheme for these networks. This dissertation develops two methods of tracking peer reputations with varying degrees of reliability and overheads.

Abstract:
In this master thesis we investigate Mobile Internet with the help of a user perspective and discuss the problems of Mobile Internet today. As the Internet revolution evolves into the Mobile Internet revolution the need for usable and desirable wireless services is increasing. Designing web based services for mobile devices and mobile users is significantly different than designing web based services for desktop use. Not only are there differences in the underlying technology but also, and perhaps most important, in the way people use the services. Our main purpose in this thesis is to investigate the occurrence of Mobile Internet from a user’s perspective, to present a definition of Mobile Internet and provide a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. The main objective is to present a theoretical framework regarding Mobile Internet usage and to investigate which user related factors to consider when developing services adapted for mobile use.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the area of dynamic Web Service deployment for grid and Internet applications. It presents a new Dynamic Service Oriented Architecture (DynaSOAr) that enables the deployment of Web Services at run-time in response to consumer requests. The service-oriented approach to grid and Internet computing is centred on two parties: the service provider and the service consumer. This thesis investigates the introduction of mobility into this service-oriented approach allowing for better use of resources and improved quality of service. To this end, it examines the role of the service provider and makes the case for a clear separation of its concerns into two distinct roles: that of a Web Service Provider, whose responsibility is to receive and direct consumer requests and supply service implementations, and a Host Provider, whose role is to deploy services and process consumers' requests on available resources. This separation of concerns breaks the implicit bond between a published Web Service endpoint (network address) and the resource upon which the service is deployed. It also allows the architecture to respond dynamically to changes in service demand and the quality of service requirements. Clearly defined interfaces for each role are presented, which form the infrastructure of DynaSOAr. The approach taken is wholly based on Web Services. The dynamic deployment of service code between separate roles, potentially running in different administrative domains, raises a number of security issues which are addressed. A DynaSOAr service invocation involves three parties: the requesting Consumer, a Web Service Provider and a Host Provider; this tripartite relationship requires a security model that allows the concerns of each party to be enforced for a given invocation. This thesis, therefore, presents a Tripartite Security Model and an architecture that allows the representation, propagation and enforcement of three separate sets of constraints. A prototype implementation of DynaSOAr is used to evaluate the claims made, and the results show that a significant benefit in terms of round-trip execution time for data-intensive applications is achieved. Additional benefits in terms of parallel deployments to satisfy multiple concurrent requests are also shown.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the contributions of edge-network processing devices in improving the perceived end-to -end QoS. Our goal is to recommend an efficient scheme for improving the percieved end-to-end QoS, either under server overload, or when legitimate processing server experiences failures. Firstly, we have described a fully client/server transparent methodology for engineering fault tolerant network services. The proposed architecture adds non additional complexity to a legitimate processing server during failsafeperiods, and enhances the robustness of internet servers across failures. At a second step, we have advocated a methodology, for efficiently improving the salability of high performance cluster-based internet servers, subjected to multiple flow-based sessions. Secondly, we have shown that , responsive session aware admission control contributes in providing improved QoS to subscribers, under overload

Abstract:
Today communicating sensors are everywhere. There are sensors in our smart phones, in our vehicles, even in our homes. As the technology in electronics and wireless communication is developed more devices is installed all around us. The Internet connected network of physical objects is called the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT devices send, receive and exchange data in order to control, monitor and optimize. The possible appliances for IoT spans industries, healthcare, cities, airports, and much more. This project targets the current state of IoT, how the development of IoT might affect building services engineering and possible future IoT appliances in buildings. The main appliances of IoT in buildings are energy saving procedures, maintenance improvements, chore automation and security enhancements. Energy saving in buildings has been a hot topic for many years due to global warming. IoT offers the possibility to reduce greenhouse gases, not only locally but also on a grander scheme. This project investigate possible energy savings by assuming that IoT can create an optimal ventilation and heating schedules. The analysis is carried out by simulating energy consumption in an apartment building using IDA ICE. The apartment building used as a reference model is located in Lycksele, Sweden. The result shows a modest energy saving of 100 kWh/apartment for heating and 250 kWh/apartment for ventilation optimization. The conclusion is that energy saving potential of IoT lies in interoperability between devices and the possibility to find correlations between data, not in individual optimizations. The main focus of IoT today in the building sector is to assist facility management with supervision of real estate. Sensors that send information about the state of devices decreases the supervision time of operating technicians. It's fundamental for facility management companies to cooperate with building engineering companies in order to avoid a constant change of batteries in IoT devices installed in buildings. By settle necessary power connections during the construction phase of a building the need for batteries is limited.

Abstract:
Electronic Product Code (EPC) refers to a numbering standard developed to uniquely identify physical objects, loads, locations, assets and other entities which are to be tracked or otherwise identified. The tracking technology consists of assigning Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, holding universally unique EPC codes, to the entities to be identified. While the EPC-RFID technology is used to identify and capture data about the physical objects to be tracked in a supply chain, the EPCglobal Network ensures the exchange of the captured data between supply chain stakeholders. Such a real-time data exchange increases visibility and efficiency throughout the supply chain, and thus it increases both company profitability and customer satisfaction. The EPCglobal Network can be regarded as the backbone for the future Internet of Things (IoT). We focus our work in this thesis on Discovery Services (DS); a suite of network lookup services enabling users to retrieve all relevant information sources with regards to a given EPC. They can be viewed as search engines for the future business infrastructure deployed in the IoT. Motivated by the unprecedented and incessantly growing amount of EPC data, the expected epidemic growth in the solicitation frequency of the lookup service, and also the foreseen exceptionally large flow of highly sensitive EPC information, we focus on proposing solutions to problems pertaining to two main challenges; architecture design of Discovery Services and their security. On the architecture design level, we propose novel DS architectures with focus directed towards meeting four major requirements; network scalability, query responsiveness, service extensibility and acceptance. On the security level, we propose probabilistic security schemes aiming at securing even further Discovery Services in the IoT in general, and in the EPCglobal network in particular.

Abstract:
This thesis describes a practical formal approach to designing Internet (IP) Telephony services with fewer feature interactions using SDL and Message Sequence Charts (MSC). Feature interactions are undesirable side effects caused by interactions between features and/or their environment. These undesirable side effects are known to affect the construction of reliable software systems. The IETF 'Session Initiation Protocol' (SIP) is chosen as the IP telephony signaling protocol for the case study of this thesis. Although IP Telephony services do not have some of the traditional feature interactions, the service designers are confronted with new feature interaction problems. We have proposed an extension to the classical feature interaction classification system. The main contribution of this thesis is our formal SDL model of SIP and its sample services that are derived from informal SIP specification. We apply use case analysis to some informal extent in our design, and specify SIP services more precisely by creating an "Abstract User interface". (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Internet Telephony is the next generation of telephony with many new features and low cost. Because of the explosion of new features, it has become critical to control and manage these features. The main challenge in Internet Telephony is service programming. The Call Processing Language (CPL) is a solution for end users to describe and control their services in Internet Telephony. Current CPL focuses on call processing services only. It is not adequate for the definition of many types of new services, such as the combination of telephony services with email, instant messaging, presence etc. This thesis extends CPL to describe new Internet Telephony services including presence services and call processing services related to presence. In the thesis, the presence system is systematically described in a three-layer architecture. End user's presence services and system basic services are clearly separated in the architecture. Presence information, as the basis of presence services, is extended from traditional "online" and "offline" indicators to include broader meaning, such as location, phone line status, role and availability status etc. Through CPL extensions for presence, user's new presence services and new presence related call processing services are illustrated by using various examples. A simulation system is implemented to demonstrate the Internet Telephony services specified in extended CPL. End users can create and modify their own services via the Graphic User Interfaces (GUIs) and access their services at any location through the Internet. The simulation system is verified with various test cases.
