Abstract:

Abstract:
The tourism sector has been identified as an industry that has the potential to make a substantial contribution to the growth of the South African economy. The majority of tourism ventures are, however, small businesses, which differ from their larger counterparts not only in terms of size, but also in regard to access to resources and marketing expertise. Not surprisingly, one of the issues identified as preventing this sector from reaching its full potential is access to markets. The Internet has been identified as tool which may assist small businesses in both their global and domestic marketing. The focus of this study was to identify the factors specific to the Internet (rather than the technology per se or organisational factors) driving the success of the use of the Internet for marketing purposes in small businesses operating in the tourism sector in South Africa. If these factors can be identified and their relative influence on Internet marketing success be determined, it will allow small tourism businesses utilise the capabilities of the Internet more effectively. The results indicate that having a product champion in the business, having a network of effective alliances, a high level of owner-manager involvement in the Internet marketing strategy as well as a clear owner-manager vision are important to the successful use of the Internet for the marketing of small tourism businesses in South Africa.

Abstract:
Purpose – This study aims to determine the influence of motivational factors: perceived ease of use (PEU), perceived enjoyment (PEJ) and perceived usefulness (PU) on utilisation of Internet health information resources among resident doctors in tertiary health-care institutions in Nigeria. The Internet has become a major source of health information for practitioners and the general public. Despite the availability of health information resources on the Internet, some resources are underutilised. There are numerous studies on Internet use among health-care workers; however, there is a dearth of information on motivational factors influencing utilisation of Internet health information resources among resident doctors in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – A descriptive survey design was used. Total enumeration technique was adopted to cover 1,280 resident doctors in 13 tertiary health-care institutions in southwestern Nigeria. A validated, self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire has four sections covering the demographic profile of the respondents, PEU, PEJ and PU. Four hypotheses were tested at the p < 0.0 1 level of significance. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple regression analysis. Findings – There were more males (69.0 per cent) than females (31 per cent); respondents mean age was 34 years. The result revealed that PEU(r = 0.181, p < 0.01), PEJ(r = 0.166, p < 0.01) and PU(r = 0.121, p < 0.01) have significant relationship with utilisation of Internet health information resources by the respondents. Also, PEU, PEJ and PU collectively (F = 15.366, df = 3; 897, p < 0.01) have significant influence on utilisation of Internet health information resources of the respondents. Individually, PEU (B = 0.864, df = 897, t = 3.90, p < 0.01) and PEJ (B = 0.349, df = 897, t = 3.060, p [lt] 0.01) were found to have significant influence on utilisation while PU (B = 0.232, df = 897, t = 1.328, p > 0.01) does not significantly influence the utilisation of Internet health information resource of the respondents. Research limitations/implications – One major implication of this study is that system designers and web content developers should design programs and websites that are compatible with the user’s abilities. Medical librarians have a role to play in providing quality health content that is easy to navigate and pleasurable to use. Both the institutions and the government have a role to play in providing information and communication technology facilities to enable doctors access relevant health information resources easily. Practical implications – Introduction of information literacy training in the residency programme or inclusion as a component of the continuing professional development will enable resident doctors to know relevant online searching tools and search techniques for accessing health information resources which will be useful to their work. This will in turn increase their PU of Internet resources. Health sciences librarians (medical librarians) in the various institutions/centres have a role to play in training resident doctors on how to access, retrieve and evaluate online health information. Librarians should also train resident doctors on how to search evidence-based Medicine resources such as the Cochrane Library and PubMed Clinical Queries and Critical Appraisal of the medical literature to make informed decision in the management of their patients and for research purposes. They should be trained on how to organise bibliographic references using reference manager tools such as Endnote, Zotero or Mendeley. Social implications – The social implication of this findings is that systems that are easy to use should be designed, so that doctors will be able to access relevant information for research and patient care for better health outcomes. The easier and enjoyable the system is to use, the more resident doctors will access and use health information resources to improve their service and save more lives. Originality/value – This study examined three motivational factors (PEU, PEJ and PU) that influence the utilisation of Internet health information resources by resident doctors in tertiary health-care institutions in Nigeria. The result revealed that collectively PEU, PEJ and PU have significant relationship with the utilisation of Internet health information resources, but PEU and PEJ are the main drivers of use of Internet health information resources among the resident doctors studied. This study adds to the literature of motivational factors influencing utilisation of Internet health information resources by resident doctors in southwestern Nigeria. This paper is original because, to the best of our knowledge, there is no other study on motivational factors influencing Internet use among resident doctors in Nigeria.

Abstract:
Introduction: Despite the public health relevance of smoking in adolescents and emerging adults, this group remains understudied and underserved. High technology utilisation among this group may be harnessed as a tool for better understanding of smoking, yet little is known regarding the acceptability of mobile health (mHealth) integration. Methods: Participants (ages 14–21 years) enrolled in a smoking cessation clinical trial provided feedback on their technology utilisation, perceptions, and attitudes; and interest in remote monitoring for smoking. Characteristics that predicted greater technology acceptability for smoking treatment were also explored. Results: Participants (N = 87) averaged 19 years old and were mostly male (67%). Technology utilisation was high for smart phone ownership (93%), Internet use (98%), and social media use (94%). Despite this, only one-third of participants had ever searched the Internet for cessation tips or counselling (33%). Participants showed interest in mHealth-enabled treatment (48%) and felt that it could be somewhat helpful (83%). Heavier smokers had more favourable attitudes toward technology-based treatment, as did those with smartphones and unlimited data. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate high technology utilisation, favourable attitudes towards technology, and minimal concerns. Technology integration among this population should be pursued, though in a tailored fashion, to accomplish the goal of providing maximally effective, just-in-time interventions.

Abstract:
The reduction of the carbon footprint of human activities is one of the current major economic and ecological challenges. Communication networks have a dual role in this reduction. On one hand, mobile networks, and in particular the base stations, are nowadays an important energy consumer. It is, thus, necessary to optimize their behavior in order to reduce their carbon footprint. On the other hand, some communication networks are necessary to better manage the electrical grid. Thanks to this better management, it is possible to improve the proportion of electricity produced by renewable energy sources. In this thesis, we look at both aspects. In a first step, we propose a solution to reduce the energy consumption of wireless mobile networks. For that purpose, we propose algorithms that optimize the power allocation when Cell Discontinuous Transmission is used by the base stations. In a second step, we propose a solution in order to improve the performance of Internet of Things networks used for the electrical grid. More precisely, we use multi-armed bandit algorithm for channel selection in IoT networks as a means of increasing the reliability of communications

Abstract:
Yet, no consensus on its definition or diagnosis criteria has been admitted, which therefore is triggering numerous debates. The present research aims to study the conceptualization of Internet addiction mainly through its assessment tools, and to fill in the lack of empirical data among French samples.Study 1 - Aim: To assess the measurement tools for Internet addiction and their psychometric properties. Results: Forty-five tools assessing Internet addiction were identified, of which only seventeen had been evaluated more than once in terms of their psychometric properties. Most of the existing scales for Internet addiction require further validation work. Despite criticism, the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) appears to be the scale with the most empirical support. However, numerous promising scales warrant further examination.Study 2 - Aim: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Online Cognition Scale (OCS). Results: Confirmatory factorial analyses showed that the 4-factor solution did not demonstrate satisfactory fit but the 5-factor model was found to better fit the data. Our results revealed that the scale scores demonstrated excellent internal consistency and satisfying inter-item correlation and test-retest reliability. The OCS was significantly correlated with the IAT, time spent online and depressive symptoms at both time points.Study 3 - Aim: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale-2 and the relevance of the Generalized Problematic Internet Use (GPIU) model among French users. Results: Path analysis provided support for this conceptual model of problematic Internet use, and a good fit to the data. The psychometric properties of the French version of the GPIUS-2 were satisfying, including reliability, concurrent and convergent validities, suggesting the usefulness of this multidimensional tool.Study 4 - Aim: To explore the relationship between GPIU and Specific Problematic Internet Uses (SPIU) Results: Our analysis revealed significant relationships between GPIU, psychopathological symptoms and most of SPIU, with many differences according to gender and age. SPIUcommunication scores significantly predict GPIU scores among the whole sample, whereas SPIUinformation seeking and gaming, and depressive symptoms were only significant among women, men and young adults, and SPIUconsumption of video/music and time spent online, among women and young adults

Abstract:
Our object of study is the numerical document, in particular taking into consideration use of members of the university community brought more and more to produce some. The actual situation requires the use of open and shared specifications to produce and describe the numerical documents (we present the specifications in the educational field). Our approach is based on the production in autonomous mode of the numerical documents. This production is favoured according to us by the new characteristics of the document (numerical), by the possibilities of generation automated in a standardized context. We pose the following assumption : in the numerical context, in particular in the numerical work environments (ENT), teachers produce, diffuse and use numerical documents, in particular for a teaching context. Our problem is thus to see how they could do it in a standardized way. Our demonstration is based on a study of the specifications in order to check their applicability according to the principle of production in autonomous mode (and semi autonomous) and on a study of the uses in progress (starting from an investigation) near members of the university community (Aquitaine, France). Our work thus consists in contributing to the reflexion in progress on the numerical document in particular in a standardized form for the teaching context at the University

Abstract:
Un spécialiste devient à son tour un document qui s'auto-décrit et participe à l'architecture des systèmes coopérants<br>Two types of search tools are currently used to help the user to find information on the Web : the search engines (Google) and the directories (Yahoo). Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.<br>The objective of this specific research report is to analyse the internet marketing function within the South African tourism industry. Furthermore, the hotel industry is analysed to establish how the introduction of the internet changed the playing field in terms of marketing and how customer behaviour has changed over the past 13 years with the introduction of the internet to the already established global distribution systems (GOS) and computer reservation systems (CRS). An in-depth literature review is conducted to analyse the marketing function in general, after which an analysis in terms of production and services organisation is discussed. Here, the focus is on the 4 P and 7 P marketing mix theories of Michael Porter. The influence of the internet on the service marketing mix is discussed with specific reference to the luxury hotel industry. The specific research and interviews conducted in this study are focused on the luxury hotel industry in the Cape Town city area. Focus areas of the interviews with the specialist in the industry are on the following: • Influence of the internet on customer relationship management • Influence of the internet on the relationship between the luxury hotels and intermediaries • Influence of the internet on marketing functions such as cost and service. The findings of the primary research in the interviews are then compared to the findings in the literature review and recommendations and managerial implications are drawn in the final chapter of the research report.

Abstract:
This research deals with the design of Internet Sites about environemental pollution problems and the study of their use. We study documentary research performed by 15 to 17 year old students. On the one hand, we consider the design and development of information about environmental problems adapted to 15-17 year old pupils. Our theoretical framwork is based on didactic transposition and on studying how students learn. On the other hand, the study of the use of the sites aims at determining which factors can influence students' activities. More specifically, in theframework of broussean's theory of situations, we study the way they use and relate their own knowledge to the information on the Internet sites. So we use the theory of situations. We have constructed four successive siyuations and we have tape recoeded students' dialogues. The analysus of the collected data show that, all in all the situations, students develop the same approach for the research and the selection of the information based on a " and paste " strategy. Moreover, they don't use a great deal of their own knowledge to resolve proposed problems, relyng instead on information present within the sites. Never the less, it seems that a situation of comparison taking place after the documentary research involving four peers who have the same knowledge, lead the students to use their knowledge, to relate it to the information of the Internet sites and to develop new knowledge

Abstract“As with any reform information should be available about how well the reform is proceeding and what have been the results of the reform. With PFM/IC very often the information about the reform progress is limited to information about the procedural arrangements that have been adopted, that is, the laws and regulations. This tells the observer, who could be a ministry of finance, a parliament, a state auditor or civil society nothing about how effectively the reform has been applied, the level of benefits arising from the reform or indeed the costs. It says nothing about weaknesses which may have emerged or how they have been dealt with. In this chapter a more effective form of reporting is recommended which is called a ‘statement of internal control’. This statement should be prepared by the head of operational management and approved by the political head of the organisation. Examples are given of this statement. Ideally this statement should be published as part of the transparency and accountability arrangements.

Abstract:
Abstract The increasing dependence on knowledge as a driver of societal development during the twenty-first century has placed the governance of academia in a state of transformation. Increasing pressure for academia to direct the production, proliferation, and utilisation of academic knowledge towards the perceived needs and interests of government, industry and interests groups have manifested themselves in a diverse set of conditions for funding of education and research. For academics in general, and for early career researchers in particular, the result is an increasing dependence on external funding. In response, many universities have taken steps to introduce restrictions on form, content, and publication of research – as well as what types of employments are made available for researchers in the first place. This study explores the relationship between employment security and reliance on external funding in Finland and Sweden – two countries that have recently adopted tenure-track models. The exploration is based on material from the APIKS survey regarding duration of employment contracts, exposure to expectations, and sources of funding. Based on this analysis, we discuss whether tenure can effectively provide a healthy degree of independence and academic freedom in a funding landscape characterised by a high degree of competition for research funding. The results of the study provide insights into how the transformation of conditions for academic work interact with fundamental values of academia, and open avenues for further research into how academics deal with the pressures of modern career structures.

Abstract:
The Internet of Things and the amplified capabilities of smart products can be increasingly utilised for the development of feedback-rich systems and loops throughout the entire product life cycle. By adopting the IoT and collecting data during product utilisation, companies can replace the end-of-life concept with product life extension and circular loops. In this sense, service business models hold the greatest potential to optimise the utilisation of goods over time. These models allow a reduction of the overall life cycle costs and contribute to resource-efficiency and the transition towards a circular economy. This paper introduces the concept of smart-circular systems that reflects the interplay between the Internet of Things, the circular economy and service business models and presents a conceptual framework for further empirical analysis of this phenomenon. The framework focuses on product-service systems and more broadly on services business models that optimise the utilisation of goods over time through the amplification of circular activities by the introduction of smart enablers. It also considers three main business models types and tactics for successful implementation of service business models.

Abstract:
In the present complicated CIoT, data utilisation is crucial, which is why data management has grown in significance in the modern world. Among the difficulties posed by centralised organisational data processing systems include delayed data processing, potential limited scalability, inadequate security, and perhaps ineffective data integrity management. The decentralised nature of blockchain technology makes these challenges highly likely to be solved. The suggested method for using blockchain technology for distributed data storage in CIoT systems is presented in this chapter. The subject covers identifying the details, such as types of consensus and the history of development that are pertinent to the study of blockchain technology. It also goes on to explain the architectural underpinnings needed to align blockchain with CIoT, particularly with regard to data storage, data flow, and security enhancements. The chapter also discusses the use of hybrid blockchains, permissioned/private, and permissionless/public decentralised data management systems in CIoT environments.

Improve the effectiveness, transparency, and safety of the product. The abandonment of Internet of Everything technology presents a disruptive strategy for managing force chains, which is particularly relevant given the increasing complexity and nonsupervisory demands of pharmaceutical logistics. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the operation of linked bias, detectors, and data analytics to cover and optimise the flow of pharmaceutical products from manufacturers to end druggies. Real-time shadowing of force, ambient conditions, and conveyance routes is made feasible through the utilisation of IoE, which helps to ensure the maintenance of the integrity and compliance of sensitive medicinal applications. Case examples that demonstrate improved force chain adaptability, decreased functional costs, and enhanced response times to dislocations are highlighted in this investigation. Abstract:
Abstract Current Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) projects aim at transporting CO2 streams directly generated from industrial processes and holding a wider spectrum of contaminants e.g. sulphur/nitrogen oxides. The challenge of impurities in relation to defining safe CO2 quality specifications against the realisation of integrity and operational threats (e.g. corrosion/acid drop-out) has been acknowledged as far back as 2010, as part of initial European CCUS initiatives, and much testing has been conducted since to identify safe impurity limits; yet the latter remains an ongoing challenge. While much test data has been published, the actual implication of these over a pipeline life cycle, and the bridge from testing to actual engineering, is somewhat not well addressed and documented to steer integrity management planning. In addition, different testing approaches have often been used, making difficult to explain unexpected and sometime contradicting results. Reviewing key test parameters, experimental test procedures, and available test data in light of corrosion science and engineering insights, this paper discusses the actual credibility and severity of internal corrosion risks, which could arise against various stages or scenarios of the pipeline operational cycle e.g. commissioning, ‘in - specification’ operations, severity and number of upsets, response time to upsets. Key inherent challenges, gaps and uncertainties will be highlighted.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The challenges in characterising susceptibility of corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs) to hydrogen embrittlement in service are highlighted using experimental data for duplex stainless steels (DSSs) in two major industrial applications: in oil production environments downhole, where galvanic coupling to carbon steel can cause hydrogen uptake, and in subsea pipelines where cathodic protection provides the source of hydrogen atoms. The influence of environment composition, charging current, pre-exposure, time, temperature, temperature excursions, and mechanical test method is examined. For constant temperature conditions, pre-exposure may have no major impact on embrittlement of DSSs because hydrogen ingress via regions of mechanically ruptured oxide film is dominant, unless there are internal microstructural regions or defects of high susceptibility. Pre-exposure may be more significant when excursions from high to low temperature occur. The application of interrupted slow strain rate testing to determination of the threshold strain to cracking of a DSS indicates a need for testing at very low strain rates. The time-consuming nature of this testing may inhibit its extended utilisation but without such data there is a measure of uncertainty in materials selection with respect to the degree of risk and the tolerance to service excursions.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to develop a scale that could evaluate an individuals confidence in using the Internet. Web-based resources are becoming increasingly important within higher education and it is therefore vital that students and staff feel confident and competent in the access, provision, and utilisation of these resources. The scale developed here represents an extension of previous research (Cassidy &amp; Eachus, 2002) that developed a measure of self-efficacy in the context of computer use. An iterative approach was used in the development of the Web User SelfEfficacy scale (WUSE) and the participants were recruited from the student body of a large University in the North West of the United Kingdom, and globally via a web site set up for this purpose. Initial findings suggest that the scale has acceptable standards of reliability and validity though work is continuing to refine the scale and improve the psychometric properties of the tool.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract High-speed Internet has been a very challenging implementation for offshore automated applications and remote communication to reduce operating costs significantly. The satellite network is commonly used in offshore operations, but its high latency and low reliability can be unsuitable for mission-critical operations. Another network medium, like digital microwave radio (DMR), is also commonly used in offshore operations to provide communication networks to multiple remote locations using a mesh configuration to extend the network range up to thirty kilometres. DMR has physical limitations, such as limited antenna height that limits line-of-sight wireless transmission range, regulated maximum bandwidth, and spectrum utilisation. However, decreasing the transmission bandwidth can increase the DMR transmission range, resulting in lower data speed. Overcoming the constraints of DMR as the wireless network solution for offshore, a multi-channel DMR configuration can be implemented to compensate for the lower data speed when transmission bandwidth is reduced. Many solutions in the market provide built-in aggregated data transmission using multi-channel DMR systems, but the solutions are restricted with small spectrum utilisation and high degradation of aggregated data transmission when hopping over multiple network nodes. A non-aggregated multi-channel data transmission method is an approach to mitigate such limitations. It is a cost-effective solution for multi-channel DMR systems. It can be agnostic and is independent of any wireless medium and type that can be used as a network channel and combined into a multi-channel wireless network system. The non-aggregated multi-channel data transmission controls the appropriate amount of data packets and the right time to transmit the data packets over all channels. The parallel data transmission is seemingly concurrent at microsecond time. The solution can improve network performance, reliability, and latency during severe weather conditions due to long-range and multiple network hops with parallel transmission paths. The solution has been implemented and used successfully at numerous offshore sites in the South China Sea using multi-medium and multi-channel wireless with significant performance results.

Abstract:
In most disciplines, research findings take a long time to filter into practice, if they ever do at all. The result of this is under-utilisation of research results and sub-optimal practices. There are a number of reasons for the lack of knowledge transfer. Firstly, practitioners don’t have the time to keep up with the latest research%in professional practice, there is little time available to read academic journals. Once they have completed their formal education, they tend to rely on tacit knowledge acquired through experience rather than explicit knowledge in the form of academic research. In addition, the volume and geometric growth of research literature results in a massive problem of information overload%it is not humanly possible for practitioners (and challenging even for full-time researchers) to keep up with all the research published in their field. From the “supply side”, academic research is primarily focused on the production rather than distribution of knowledge%there is little investment in the distribution of research results beyond academic communities. The Internet provides a potential solution to this problem, in that it provides a common information infrastructure for connecting those who produce knowledge (researchers) and those who need tc apply it (practitioners). This paper describes two projects which use the Internet to make research results directly available to practitioners in the workplace. The first is a project in a health department which provides medical staff with on-line access to the latest medical research at the point of care. The second is a project currently in progress to implement a similar system to support IS practitioners. Finally, we draw some general lessons about how to improve transfers of knowledge from research and practice, which could be applied in any discipline.

Abstract:
• Renewable energy (RE) projects in Indonesia usually have IRR between 10% and 15% and PP around 6 to 30 years • Attractive return usually could be found in large scale RE projects, although there are numerous other factors involved including technology developments, capacity scale, power purchasing price agreements, project locations, as well as interest rates and applied incentives. • Crowdfunding (CF) has big potential to contribute to the financing of RE projects especially financing small scale RE projects. • P2P lending usually targeted short-term loans with high interest rates. Therefore, it cannot be employed as an alternative financing for RE projects in Indonesia. • Three types of CF that can be employed as an alternative for RE project funding in Indonesia. Namely, securities, reward, and donation-based CF. In addition, hybrid models such as securities-reward and reward-donation could also be explored according to the project profitability. • Several benefits offer by securities crowdfunding (SCF) compared to conventional banking and P2P lending, as follows: (1) issuer do not need to pledge assets as collateral; (2) do not require to pay instalment each month; (3) issuer share risks with investors with no obligation to cover the investor’s loss; (4) applicable for micro, small, medium, enterprises (MSMEs) with no complex requirements; and (5) there is possibility to attract investors with bring specific value. • Several challenges that need to be tackled such as the uncertainty of RE regulations; (1) issuer’s inability in managing the system and business; (2) the absence of third parties in bridging between CF platform and potential issuer from RE project owner; (3) the lack of financial literacy of the potential funders; and (4) lastly the inadequacy of study regarding potential funders in escalating the RE utilisation in Indonesia.
