Thian, Marlene. "Southern Rep (Internship Report)." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2013. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/aa_rpts/148.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its inception in 1986, Southern Rep has maintained a formidable reputation for providing quality artistic programming as a nonprofit theatre company. Despite this status, dwindling government funding for arts in the United States combined with a decline in earned revenue and audience attendance has impacted Southern Rep’s operations. The result is an increased need for development and fundraising activities. The purpose of this report is to document my internship with Southern Rep from September 4, 2012 through June 5, 2013. My assessment is written from the perspective of an Arts Administrator functioning in a development capacity. By identifying Southern Rep’s internal strengths and weaknesses combined with external opportunities and threats which impact its operations, I will provide recommendations to achieve sustainability of contemporary drama in a conservative yet emergent environment.

Abstract:
This report describes my experience of 9 months as an intern at Eurotrials, Scientific Consultants, a company devoted to clinical research and scientific consulting. This internship developed in two aspects: multidisciplinary and monodosciplinary training. Multidisciplinary training involved active participation in different departments of this Company, with the objective of obtaining a broad perspective on the multidisciplinary process of the clinical development of medical products. Monodisciplinary training was focused in medical statistics, being carried out in the Biostatistics department of the Company. The objective was to obtain practical knowledge for the application of statistics in health sciences. This implied the learning of fundamental statistical concepts. This internship allowed me to understand, in depth, the multidisciplinary work necessary for an adequate performance of a clinical research project. It also allowed me to acquire valuable knowledge in statistical analysis, as well as to clearly understand the role of statistics in clinical research, as an essential tool in study planning, analysis and interpretation of data obtained.

Cristiani, Fernanda. "Internship report : Contemporary Arts Center : a report." ScholarWorks@UNO, 1992. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/aa_rpts/76.

Full text
Abstract:
This internship report describes the student's experiences from January until May 1992, while she worked for the Visual Arts Department of the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The paper will also give the reader some insight into the history and the current operating conditions of the Center. The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) is a non-profit, government and community supported institution, and is the home of the nation's third largest artists' organization, the National Association of Artists' Organization. The CAC offers over 250 performances, exhibits, screenings, concerts, workshops, classes and lectures all year round. In addition, it provides services to artists, including information on fellowships and grants, umbrella project support and technical assistance. Exhibits are often accompanied by forums and panel discussions to enhance the public's awareness and appreciation of the works. Programming draws from local, regional, national and international art communities and attracts an annual audience of more than 50,000. At the time of this internship the CAC was in its second year in newly renovated facilities. Prior to 1990, the Center had been a dusty and drafty warehouse that had provided alternative space to show contemporary work in all the arts since 1976. Economic conditions in New Orleans, as in many parts of the South, are in recession and local financial support for cultural activities and facilities lags far behind expenses. The Visual Arts Department was, along with all other departments of the institution, severely affected by budgetary problems and attendant personnel shortages. The Center needs a lung-term fiscal policy with provisions for contingencies.

The main goals of my internship as associate editorial manager in ARC Publishing were to develop the International Journal of Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health and to perform medical writing tasks. Bound with those objectives, and as result of the empowerment in the first months, I was invited to actively manage ARC Publishing activities and to promote the company growth. Both goals were achieved. We, me and my teammates, were able to build a solid editorial board for the journal and an information technology infrastructure to support the journal publication, manuscript submission and peer-review process. As medical writer, I participated in the writing of 2 original manuscripts, revised and executed statistical methods, edited book chapters, prepared case report forms, and wrote instructions for authors and marketing texts (among several other works). We also registered ARC Publishing brand, promoted it among our clients and built internal resources (by staff training and quality procedures) to guarantee ARC’s future as a reference brand in medical writing for private clinicians. During my internship I improved my medical writing and editorial skills. But my greater gains were in interpersonal and management skills. Globally, I met the objectives set for the 9 months period, growing as professional and contributing to ARC Publishing development.

Hannon, Brian. "Arts Administration internship report : the New Museum of Contemporary Art : a report." ScholarWorks@UNO, 1992. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/aa_rpts/79.

Abstract:
Stephen Weil writes in his collection of essays, Rethinking the Museum and Other Meditations," .. we must never forget that ideas--and not just things alone--also lie at the heart of the museum enterprise. Reality is neither objects alone nor simply ideas about objects (2). Weil's insight into the matter of museums prompted me to search out a particular type of organization in which to work for this internship. No doubt any number of respected and successful institutions in New York City could have offered me an extraordinary internship in arts administration, but I was drawn to The New Museum of Contemporary Art in SoHo for the way it sought to explore ideas about the nature of art, the way it defied standard institutional practice, and the way it brazenly undermined conventional expectations of the museum experience. The New Museum confronted the common assumptions about what art is and the way arts organizations relate to our culture. Here was a museum that took risks, that did not claim to know all the answers, but was willing to systematically open itself to criticism as part of its mission. The New Museum provided me the opportunity to explore the possibilities not described in the textbooks. I knew this organization would inevitably pose a new set of problems, but I was sure it was just as likely to set forth new solutions as well. As it turned out, my original semester-long internship became a year-long adventure that provided me the chance to work closely with the influential director of a major New York art museum, the responsibility of overseeing an installation in one of its smaller galleries, and, ultimately, the opportunity to assume the position of coordinator of an exhibition that encompassed the entire museum. Were it not for this museum's willingness to take a chance on an unproven quantity, to trust, to try the untried, I would not have gained so soon the experience and confidence that this institution so freely granted.

Abstract:
From July through November 2002, the internship which I have been engaged in at Jackson Barracks Military Museum has afforded me opportunity to gain practical experience in both the curatorial and preparatory aspects of museum operations. Jackson Barracks Military Museum is part of a larger state agency, "The Military Directorate" and its governing board is appointed in accordance with state law. Jackson Barracks Military Museum is presently being restructured to acquire certification from the U.S. Army Center of Military History Museum Division. Katz in "Museum Trusteeship: The Fiduciary Ethic Applied" The Journal of Arts Management and Law (73) writes that the museum community has been compelled to develop codes of ethics and sound practices and procedures for their board members, and museum management. This effort will bring this State Museum more in line with the requirements of the American Association of Museums for certification. I was and am pleased to have had the opportunity to take part in this effort which required a complete tum around in how the organization approached its mission. I will detail areas of responsibility given to me, and my contributions to the ongoing effort to become the first National Guard agency to acquire certification.

Abstract:
KID smART is an arts organization with a main focus in Arts Integration. Arts Integration is the fusing of the arts with education. This can be achieved through one teacher in the classroom, or two teachers co-teaching in the classroom. It presents academic subjects through art, while meeting state and district standards for the art form and the academic subject. Arts Integration is not a new method of teaching, but it is something that is very new in the city of New Orleans. KID smART’s mission is stated as KID smART teaching under-served children positive life skills through hands-on arts activities. By introducing children to the arts, KID smART provides a safe, nurturing place for children to learn valuable skills that will make them more successful in all spheres of life: discipline, self respect, teamwork, creative problem solving and pride of accomplishment. Through its mission, KID smART hopes to use Arts Integration to boost the academic and artistic success of school-age children in the City of New Orleans. KID smART employs teacher training and instruction by teaching artists in both the visual and performing arts (see APPENDIX 1A). KID smART also uses classroom programming, professional development for educators, after-school programs and other community-based projects to collaborate with professional artist educators, school administrators and classroom teachers to promote discipline, self-respect, teamwork, creative problem solving and pride of accomplishment within students.

Abstract:
In the winter of 1999, Artistic Director Harriet Vogt decided to retire earlier than had been anticipated by the university. With her retirement just weeks away on March 1, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. John Miller, asked if I was interested in taking a leave of absence from the Department of Visual Arts and becoming Interim Artistic Director of Fanfare. At the same time I was beginning to look for a possible internship that would take advantage of my professional experience in the arts and the knowledge that I had gained in graduate school at U.N.O. My previous experience with directing presenting and festival organizations had been focused in urban areas where a large sophisticated audience that was accustomed to supporting the arts typicaUy exists. Directing an arts organization in a rural area would present many new challenges.
