Wallman, Andy. "Pharmacy Internship : Students’ Learning in a Professional Practice Setting." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för farmaci, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-112771.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to explore Swedish pharmacist students’ learning during pharmacy internship. Internships are meant to introduce students to professional practice. Education programs have to reflect changes in the professional role, and take into account that learning in a professional practice setting differs from organized formal education. This thesis includes both quantitative and qualitative research approaches and applies workplace learning theories. A scheme for measuring pharmacy students’ reflective ability was developed and shown to be feasible and reliable. Factors important for reflection were found to be primarily social and contextual, especially trained tutor and small pharmacy size. Notably, learning style or critical thinking did not correlate to students’ reflective ability. Tutors and students perceived that students used a wide variety of activities supporting learning of a broad repertoire of knowledge and skills, preparing them for coming professional working life. Tutors are most important to support learning. However, the current curriculum and formal activities do not address all these outcomes and learning activities used, e.g. workplace learning. The first overall conclusion is that internship plays an essential part in the pharmacist education program. The integration of formal and informal learning activities during internship, including raising awareness of incidental learning, is important to support students in learning the professional practice of pharmacy. This integration could possibly be strengthened by introducing further tutor training, different assignments, and by using portfolios. The second conclusion is that the community of practice is essential for students’ learning during internship, especially the student-tutor interaction. Hence, the entire social context has to be considered and it is important to ensure a good learning environment at pharmacies during internship. In summary, this thesis contributes to the understanding of students’ learning during pharmacy internship and introduces educational research on the Swedish undergraduate pharmacy education programs.

Abstract:
This research study assessed Korean students' perceptions and overall satisfaction levels regarding the effectiveness of their hospitality internship experiences. Relationships with demographic characteristics were identified. The sample was comprised of 74 senior-level university students enrolled in hospitality and/or tourism management programs who were completing an internship in Korea. Generally, students exhibited low agreement levels on the internship program aspects being investigated. Previous work experience was the most common factor influencing students' perceptions of their internship experiences. Agreement levels increased with length of prior work experience. Type of internship workplace, expectation of an employment offer, age and gender were found to influence students' perceptions of the internship experiences.

Keller, Kerri Day. "Examining internships as a high-impact educational practice." Diss., Kansas State University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/13712.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy<br>Department of Special Education, Counseling and Student Affairs<br>Christy Craft<br>Colleges and universities across the United States seek new, creative, and impactful ways to enhance student engagement. The study of student engagement has led to the identification of several “high-impact” educational practices that appear to generate higher levels of student performance, learning, and development than the traditional classroom experience (Brownell & Swaner, 2010). Internships – when done well – are among the recommended high-impact educational practices (Kuh, 2008). This qualitative study investigated internships to address the following research questions: What is the essence of internships that are done well? What are the student learning outcomes of internships that are done well? Utilizing interviews and a phenomenological approach, this study reconstructed internship experiences of 19 undergraduate students. For the triangulation of data collection, 5 faculty members and 5 employer representatives were also interviewed about their observations regarding student internships. After open coding and analyzing interview transcripts, four essence themes and four outcome themes emerged from the data. According to study participants, internships that are done well require commitment, connect the classroom to career, facilitate good communication, and provide a sense of community. In regards to resulting outcomes, internships that are done well develop the competencies of students, produce career-related crystallization, build self-confidence, and generate capital. The results suggest that when internships are done well, they can embody Kuh’s (2008) six elements of high impact practices as they are effortful, include feedback, apply learning, prompt reflection, build relationships, and engage across differences. The findings of this study have the potential to assist the campus community – faculty, advisors, and career development professionals – as they help students fulfill their learning and career development goals (O’Neill, 2010). First, this study’s findings essentially point to the need for students to demonstrate initiative and fundamental skills during internships. Second, employers must continue to be informed about what constitutes a meaningful internship experience for students. Third, universities should “scale up” high-impact educational practices like internships (Brownell & Swaner, 2010) by creating a developmental approach for program implementation. Furthermore, everyone in the campus community must work together to effectively facilitate internships and other high-impact educational practices.

Adadi, Elizabeth. "Supervisory Practices in a Virtual Internship Program: A Multi-Case Study." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3748.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored certain leadership methods that eSupervisors were utilizing with eInterns through the theoretical lenses of House’s (1971) path-goal theory of leadership and the effectiveness of these methods on learning outcomes. The overarching research question that guided this study was: How do eSupervisors contribute to the learning growth of eInterns? A qualitative multi-case study was conducted on a population of eSupervisors, current eInterns (students), and past eInterns (graduates) that were associated with the Virtual Student Foreign Service (VSFS) program. VSFS is a program aimed at exposing students to working opportunities in the government. The findings from this study imply that there are a number of ways in which eSupervisors can contribute to the learning growth of eInterns. These contributions will vary depending on the eInterns, the environmental characteristics, the leadership approach taken, and the motivational factors involved. The significance in applying this research today falls in line with the booming growth of distance education programs the trend of incorporating technology in the classrooms.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between internships and Social and Emotional Competence (SEC). SEC was conceptualized as the combination of Emotional and Social Intelligence. Increasingly, areas of SEC have become the subject of research, because SEC enables people to use emotions advantageously to achieve desired outcomes. Measures of seven components of SEC (self-awareness, selfperception, self-regulation, self-motivation, self-ownership, empathy, and social awareness) were evaluated. Qualitative phone interviews were conducted with 21 undergraduate and graduate Communication students whom had recently served as interns. All interviews were recorded and transcribed. Research questions sought to evaluate the effect of internships on (1) self-awareness and self-perception; (2) self-regulation and self-management; (3) self-motivation and career development; and (4) empathy, social awareness and relationship skills. The majority of subjects reported increases in all areas of SEC after the internship process. In addition, a formal survey of members of the Educators Academy of Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) was conducted to compare internship guidelines by professors at other universities. Eleven professional educators responded. Results found that interns from University of the Pacific's Communication program were being held to the highest standard, in terms of supervision and guidance.

Jose, Maria. "Rural internship job preferences of final year medical students in South Africa: a discrete choice experiment." Master's thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31215.

Full text
Abstract:
To achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 in developing countries, Good health and wellbeing for all, the health workforce is vital however the unpopularity of rural medical practice results in widening healthcare inequalities between urban and rural areas. This study determined the heterogeneity in valuations for rural facility attributes by final year medical students at one South African public university to inform cost-effective recruitment policy recommendations. Focus groups conducted identified facility attributes, a D-efficient design was generated with 15 choice sets, each with two rural hospital alternatives and no opt-out option. An online, unlabelled discrete choice experiment (DCE) was conducted, the results effects coded, and mixed logit models applied. The final sample size was 193 (86,16% of the class), majority female 130 (66.33%), with urban origins 176 (89.80%), unmarried 183 (93.37%) and without children 193 (98.47%). Most had undergraduate rural medicine exposure 110 (56.12%) and intended to specialise 109 (55.61%). The main-effects mixed logit found advanced practical experience, hospital safety, correctly fitted personal protective equipment (PPE) and availability of basic resources the highest weighted attributes with their mean utilities increasing by 0.82, 0.64, 0.62 and 0.52 respectively (p=0.000). In contrast, increases in rural allowance and the provision of housing provided smaller mean utility increases of 0.001 (p<0.01) and 0.09 (p<0.05) respectively. The interaction terms; female, general practise and prior rural medicine exposure, were associated with higher weighting for hospital safety, mean utility increases 1.59, 1.82, 1.42 respectively (p=0.000). Participants were willing to pay ZAR 2636.45 monthly (95%CI: 1398.55;3874.355) to gain advanced practical experience (equivalent to 65.91% of current rural allowance). Medical students’ facility preferences have been found to be influenced by their gender, career aspirations and prior experienced with rural medicine. The policy recommendations derived from this research include publicising rural health facility “draw-cards” among medical graduates, such as the opportunity to gain practical experience, improving the physical and occupational safety at rural health facilities and providing greater transparency about rural facility attributes to medical graduates.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to its position as the main source of national income, the tourism and hospitality service industry in Thailand is now highlighted as an area to watch in terms of its value for continued national economic growth. Chiang Rai Rajabhat University (CRU) a university in the tourist area in the North of Thailand, plays a key role in hospitality service education and has a significant influence in the sector because it produces graduates for service in the workforce of this industry. Given the industry's competitive climate, decisions to increase the number of workers, or practitioners, need to take into account the quality of the workers. In this time of globalization, when English is used widely, particularly in the intercultural context ofhospitality service businesses, the quality of English must be seriously considered. Business English (BE) graduates, as prospective employees, need to be highly competent in English language skills. This demand for effective English users in hospitality service workplaces means that there is a need to give serious consideration to the ability of Thai graduates to become competent users of English in real workplaces, and to develop an understanding of how they may achieve the high level of competence required of them. This study investigates the English language skills Thai students used in intercultural communication in hospitality service workplaces. The aim was to determine what essential language skills were used, to explore how these skills were implemented while giving services to international tourists, and to use the results to reflect on English for Hospitality Services (EHS) study in order to provide some recommendations for teaching and learning in those courses. The project was designed as an ethnographic case study. Multiple research tools were used, but particularly participatory observations of student workplace interactions, and semi-structured interviews that included interviews with workplace staff, such as managers, heads of departments, business owners and on-site supervisors. There were additional sources of information used, including students' diaries and other documents relevant to internship. The data collected were then examined using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The participants were 15 volunteers and were fourth-year students in the Business English (BE) program at CRU. The case study involved an examination of data collected from ten workplaces in four hospitality service areas. The observation transcriptions were quantitatively scrutinized for the most essential functional language units used in the hospitality services. The significant findings indicate that the functional language of requests and responding to requests was the most frequently used unit in this hospitality services area. This result confirms previous studies that have found that the functional language of requests, including responding to requests, is the most essential functional pattern in hospitality services. Thanking, offering help/services, and refusing are counted as the second, third and fourth essential units used. However, apologizing and responding to complaints, which are generally considered important in the service area, were very much less frequently used in this study. There was no evidence that significant breakdown or major problems in communication occurred during hospitality service procedures examined; however, the findings suggest that the language proficiency of Thai students was very low in terms of language accuracy. From the results of the study, it is recommended that those responsible for EHS teaching and learning give serious consideration to increasing the level ofcommunicative competence of Thai BE students in terms of English language skills, and to improving the cultural awareness of graduates who expect to be involved in intercultural communication in the hospitality services industry.

Short, Kathleen M. "The Impact of Experiential Learning: Assessing the Outcomes of Internship Experiences for Students Entering the Construction Industry." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/63890.

Full text
Abstract:
The state of the economy has brought changes in the construction industry creating a more competitive employment environment in the construction industry as well as an increase in project requirements due to complexity, duration of work, fewer employees to do the work, and the type of projects being undertaken.  These changes have created an increased need for managers to possess both technical skills and also emotional competencies.  Employers are now seeking to hire individuals who exhibit emotional competencies and other soft skills, such as empathy, verbal communication and relationship building. Soft skills improve the development and maintenance of relationships among the diverse group of professionals necessary to complete projects.  With the construction industry being nomadic in nature, the ability to develop and maintain relationships can be especially important. Employers are placing more emphasis on these soft skills when evaluating potential hires and starting salaries. With these changes comes the realization that students seeking to gain employment in the industry need to have a competitive edge.  While soft skills are critical for students graduating from construction focused programs, opportunities to learn and enhance these skills are not always available within the curriculum. The majority of students graduating from college programs today are part of a generation referred to as Millennials"a generation differing greatly from those that have come before them. For Millennials to gain a competitive edge and maximize employment opportunities, they must first have an understanding of what the industry perceives students need to be successful in the industry.  Program curriculums must also find a way to produce students that offer more than just technical knowledge to employers.  This is not always possible within existing programs trying to meet the demands of accreditation requirements within the credit hours required.  One option construction focused programs could consider to incorporate opportunities for students to gain a competitive edge would be through the mandatory participation of a structured internship experience. This research sought to address these issues and offer insight into what characteristics industry felt were necessary for student success.  The work also sought to establish whether students had an understanding of these characteristics and whether they felt they were strong or deficient in these areas.  The research also identified the role internships played in current accredited construction focused programs and whether student participation in internships had an impact on their understanding of the characteristics required to be successful in the construction industry.<br>Ph. Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄應用科技大學<br>觀光與餐旅管理研究所<br>94<br>With the increase of tourism-related departments set up in universities after 2000, students at study are required to do internship practice for skill-improving to meet the demand of tourism industry. Though the rate of tourism-related graduates working in tourism industry is rather low, which may be referred to the characteristics of this industry, yet the effect of internship practice somehow has a great influence on students’ job searching. Since tourism industry brings a large amount of national revenue to many countries, lodging industry is regarded as the major index of tourism industry. After the promotion of “Challenge 2008 -National Development Project” by the government, thousands of job vacancies will be wanted in lodging industry, which will make lodging industry a prominent and prosperous industry, and people working in tourism industry will be in great need. This study, as a result, is aimed at comprehending the factors that influence students’ internship effectiveness and analyzing the performance of internship effectiveness of students with different “learning attitude”, “learning motivation” and “practice efficiency.” A questionnaire containing 「personal background variables」、「learning attitude scale」、「learning motivation scale」、「practice efficiency evaluation scale」is conducted to make a random survey, with 419 copies of valid samples collected, 63.4% of valid responses. Data analysis tools, including descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, regression analysis and path analysis, are adopted to verify all hypotheses. In terms of the finding of this survey, it is proved that both learning attitudes and learning motivations have an influence on internship effectiveness, in the path of learning motivations influencing reaction levels, then learning levels and finally behavior levels.

However, look back to Taiwan’s literature review and thesis, there were not so many studies related to the topic. Thus, present study aims to Taiwanese society to study the different attitudes between employers and students. The U.S. scholars Mark Hall, Gerald Stiles, John Kuzma and Kevin Elliott’s (1995) questionnaire were used in present study. The questionnaire consisted of 5 dimensions, general attitudes and support, students learning outcomes, immediate payoff, academic requirement and Employment/ Students/ Advisors’ roles. Electronic questionnaire and paper questionnaire were both used to collect the data. After collection, we were using two different analyze skill (i.e. T-test and MANOVA) to examine the disparity and consistency between groups. The statistical result shows that discrepancy attitudes indeed existed between employers and students, the discrepancy attitude especially between employers and students with no internship experience. In present study, we tried to explain the reasons for the disparity and also consistency attitudes. We bring up some suggestions to human resource people, faculty and students, hoping to better the internship programs and to create the win-win situation.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立暨南國際大學<br>教育政策與行政學系<br>102<br>Abstract Owing to Taiwan's development of cultural and creative industries, design related departments attract more and more high school graduates to major in. The internship programs play an important role in design related departments. The internship programs also become an important bridge between industries and universities in recent years, for the programs try to help balance theoretical classroom learning and in firm working experiences. Internships enrich students' learning experiences and resume for future employments. In this study, previous research tends to overlook the design related departments’ internship programs and less focuses on the students themselves. This study is designed to look at the association between design related departments’ internship programs and their students’ employability from students’ perspective. This study has developed a questionnaire for design students. Results from this study show that design students have positive beliefs in internships. In addition, they have recognized that the alumni network is helpful for future employment. Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北大學<br>犯罪學研究所<br>103<br>Internship is the important bridge between police education and practice. For police students, police daily work and special operation are more understandable through proper internship. A good internship can make knowledge in books more practical on streets and shorten the transition period from a student to a professional police officer. This study investigated the current police internship curriculum, so called “sandwiches” design – in-class education, first internship, in-class education, second internship, in-class education, graduation” and how effective this design is perceived by the police students who received it. The study also examined factors related to this perceived effectivenss by the interviewees, such as the motivation of enrolling in the police college and police professon, assigned internship mentors and institutions, and their working environment. The study distributed a survey to 272 former police college students who graduated within one-year and currently work in Taipei City and New Taipei City. Main findings include: 1. The subjects overall perceived their internship as effective and helpful. 2. The subjects’ background, internship marks, organizational culture etc. insignificantly affect their perception on the effectiveness of police internship. 3. The most significant factor related to the perceived effectiveness of police internship at the individual level is the subjects’ motivation to learn. 4. The most significant factor at the environmental level is the internship mentors who were assigned to the students. The most effective way of learning to be a police officer is the hands-on experiences directly from these instructors if the later are willing to devote their time to the students. The study therefore recommends the following suggestions to improve the police internship curricurum. First, to implement different levels of psychological assessments to screen studehts with little or no motivation and provide them with more careen counseling; second, to implement a better and more objective evalution system to students’ internship performance; last, to provide more incentive to internship mentors/instructors or inspire them to devote more to their young colleagues.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立政治大學<br>勞工研究所<br>107<br>Summary The objective of the research is to probe the the most critical factor and the way to achieve the greatest effectiveness of internship. For students, the most critical factor is the outcome they acquired from the process, which responds to the motivation of learning and growth. The positive factors, which increase the effectiveness of the internship, include Personal Growth, Work Content and Work Characteristics, Interpersonal Interaction, Working Environment and Salary and Benefits.Oppositely, the negative factors, which decrease the effectiveness of the internship, include Expectation Gap and Information Asymmetry. In other words, if the enterprises provide the truthful job description, the unchallenging work would not be the main factor for decreasing the satisfaction of internship.Since the government and education institutes take little part in internship program, they have nearly no influence to the internship outcome. So here is our opinion about how to build a meritorious internship program. For enterprises, the job should be challenging and the meaningful. Meanwhile, mentoring system and appropriate compensation package would improve the effectiveness as well. For the education institutes side, filtering the company for students is significant. They could also cooperate with the business to provide more efficient internship program, and adjust the program through feedback from enterprises and students to ensure the programs improve employment of students. Last but not the least, the government should urge the company that have not yet been opening to release more vacancy, match business and students, prevent go-for tasks jobs, demand the enterprises put mentor system into practice, and compare the feedback of students and build Evaluation system to keep a close eye on business internship program.

Parker, Lindy. "An Assessment of Students’ Perceived Peripheral Stressors in Counseling Internships." 2014. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/cps_diss/95.

Full text
Abstract:
The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP, 2009) defines a counseling student’s internship as the “capstone” experience in his or her training (p. 60), and the importance and value of the counseling internship experience has been established in the literature (Bernard & Goodyear, 2004; Gibson et al., 2010; Gnilka et al., 2012). However, despite all of its benefits, the masters-level internship process itself can pose several stressful challenges for the counseling intern, specifically “peripheral stressors”. Peripheral stressors refer to those stressful challenges or issues that counseling students face outside of counseling sessions and beyond client work. The purpose of this study was to assess counseling interns’ perceived peripheral stressors when completing their masters-level internship. Research questions included: What are the student-perceived peripheral stressors when completing a masters-level counseling internship? How stressful are these challenges to counseling interns, if at all? Do students in CACREP recommended internship structures experience various stressors differently than students in longer internship structures? Is there a difference in the effect of stressors among demographic groups? A survey was developed and distributed in Qualtrics survey software. The survey was used to identify counseling interns’ perceived peripheral stressors as they relate to the counseling internship, and determine how stressful these challenges are to interns, if at all. The results indicated that some peripheral stressors experienced by interns could be considered “a concern” or “problematic.” Further, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted, resulting in the peripheral stressors being appropriately grouped into six common or underlying dimensions: Deficient Training Experience at Internship Site, Struggles with University Supervisor, Internship Site Selection Process, Personal Wellness and Financial Strain, Meeting CACREP Requirements, and Issues with Internship Site Personnel. The factor scores were then used to compare peripheral stressors in internship across internship structures and other demographic groups through analysis of variance and t-tests. Certain groups of students, including but not limited those employed outside of their counseling internship and those that must find and secure their own internship site, perceived more stress in some of the peripheral stressor factors than other counseling interns.

博士<br>高雄醫學大學<br>職業安全衛生研究所<br>97<br>With regard to the researches in occupational health or environmental health, the prime objects of studies focus on regular labors and less on students in the internship period. Since students are immature, it is unknown whether they confront higher risk on their health or not when exposing to the same working environment as regular labors. In this study, it is divided into three parts: 1) discuss the dangers to students with different departments in the internship period; 2) evaluate the effects after students have been given training programs on prevention; 3) understand the impacts on students under environmental exposure. This research was conducted by means of regarding nursing students, culinary students and female college students as subjects in different stages. All participants in this experiment were voluntary; in addition, this study had approved by the Human Subjects Committee of Kaohsiung Medical University. Based on the requirements of the study, the surveys were undertaken by questionnaires, dental caries examinations and blood specimens and then analyzed the results after collecting above data. This study indicated that after educational intervention, the incidence of NSIs/SIs decreased significantly from 50.5% pre-test to 25.2% post-test, and the report rate increased from 37.0% to 55.6%; the DMFT index in case group was significantly higher than that of control group (5.59±3.53 vs. 4.21±3.64 teeth, p<0.001); the average blood lead levels measured during the menses was higher than that at non-menses(2.84±0.91 vs. 2.64±0.84 μg/dL, p<0.01). Concerning the risk and preventive means related to students in internship period, the findings suggest that it is imperative to strengthen education of occupational safety during school terms. In light of economic recession, enterprises are competing for experienced professionals as having such employees helps them save time and money on cultivating novice employees. Statistics showed that new graduates’ internship experience (72.6 %) being most emphasized among other elements by enterprises in Taiwan (Cheers, 2017). Previous researches perceived that internship experience may influence interns’ metacognition, self-efficacy and employability (Cheng, 2010; Li, 2010; Li, Pan, & Tsao, 2016). This study was aimed to investigate English major internship students’ metacognitive strategy use, self-efficacy, and employability transition during internship and how they correlate with each other. The study adapted Questionnaire of Metacognitive Strategy Use in Workplace, and Self-Efficacy Scale: General Self-Efficacy (Sherer & Maddux, 1982) and the Chinese version of Internship students’ employability (Youth Development Administration, 2006). The participants were 21 English major internship students at a university in northern Taiwan. The quantitative data were computed through descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and Paired t-test utilizing Statistic Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 18.0; and the qualitative data were computed through NVivo. The findings indicated that participants were at the high frequency of metacognitive strategy use, high level of self-efficacy, and moderate level of employability. Participants tended to use arranging and planning strategy most, and stayed proactive throughout internship. In addition, participants were at the high level of work attitude and cooperative ability, and medium level of career planning skill and knowledge management and application. This study offers a precise picture about the correlation among variables. Furthermore, several pedagogical and theoretical applications and suggestions would be provided for the future studies, and course instructors.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄海洋科技大學<br>航運技術研究所<br>106<br>Working on the immense and changeful ocean, nautical science majored students have to be perseverant, competent and knowledgeable, applying their professional knowledge to their internships so that they can test and verify if they can integrate their knowledge with marine industry seamlessly and serve as competent mariners. Maritime students have to spend a long time on the sea during their internships. For the students, how to adapt to the interpersonal relationship and how to fit into the environment are the critical challenges for them, testing their adaptability and their wisdom. If students are unable to overcome the difficulties and cannot adjust their mentality, they are very likely to give up halfway. As a result, their internships are unfinished and the education resources – quota of trainees – are wasted. This study completed a pretest questionnaire survey in February ~ May 2017, in which 21 copies of psychological scale were received and were divided into three categories – highly, moderately, and lowly suitable for maritime internship – based on the survey results. 7 respondents were found highly suitable for maritime internship (score 123 – 130), 11 respondents were found moderately suitable for maritime internship (score 102 – 119), and 3 respondents were found lowly suitable for maritime internship (score less than 100). According to the survey results, the highly suitable students exhibited a high level of learning motivations, setting their learning goals with positive and active career value. The moderately suitable students were eager to give the internship a try and exhibited the ability to complete their tasks properly although they could be easily frustrated by pressure. The lowly suitable students were confused about maritime career. They missed their homes and tended to escape from pressure if the internships were too long for them. There is no doubt they are a highly risk group for the internships. In September 2017, based on the results acquired from the pretest survey, this study modified the questionnaires with emphasis on the criteria for students to select their careers. The sequence of questions was adjusted accordingly. The modified questionnaire was made up of five dimensions: maritime learning motivations, evaluation of adaptation to workplace, job satisfaction, viewpoints of career value, and students’ self-evaluation of their personality traits. Many questionnaires were distributed in September 2017. In November of same year, 88 valid questionnaires were received for second analysis. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed, serving as a systematic decision model for analysis and solution finding. The issues associated with internships were weighted to determine the quality of internship environments in an attempt to improve the internship resources and to solve the personnel assignment problems. Last but not least, this study reviewed the onboard internship systems established by various countries in an attempt to make up for the deficiency of Taiwan’s maritime education system. According to the analysis and study, there are five critical factors affecting onboard internships: (1) A constructive and positive interpersonal relationship on the ships can help students work merrily. (2) Students can improve their families’ financial situation if they continue to work for the same shipping company after they complete their internships. (3) Once students adapt to a group life, they can get along with people easily. (4) The quality of maritime internships is very important for students to choose maritime service as their career. (5) Shipping company’s size and personnel promotion system are very important for students to decide whether or not to work for same shipping company after they complete their internships. Moreover, five factors are less likely to affect maritime internships: (1) Students set their goals during their internships and strive to accomplish their goals accordingly. (2) Students are likely to feel nervous and unwell when they work under high pressure. (3) Students constantly pay attention to school information and grasp their opportunities. (4) Students are confident they can apply their professional knowledge to their maritime internships. (5) Students choose to escape from pressure instead of facing it whenever they are faced with pressure. As stated above, onboard internship is a painstaking process for all mariners. Schools provide education resources for students to build their knowledge base, and rely on shipping companies to provide an apprenticeship for the students to integrate their knowledge with the practical daily routines. The government has to inject internships with more education resources and review the neighboring countries’ mariner cultivation system as a reference for Taiwan’s maritime internships, allowing Taiwan’s marine industry to be connected to other industries. By doing so, Taiwan’s marine industry will prosper once again.
