Abstract:
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured psychological treatment developed for the management of depressive disorder that has been further refined and evaluated in the treatment of older adults. IPT is based on attachment, communication and social theories and focuses on the interpersonal origins and effects of depression. In this chapter, the delivery of IPT is described and illustrated with a case example. The four possible foci in IPT (complicated bereavement, role transition, interpersonal disputes, and interpersonal deficits) are explained. The evidence base for the efficacy of IPT in late-life depression is reviewed, including the Maintenance Therapies in Late Life Depression trials. Newer applications, including care management interventions and the treatment of anxiety, are described.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a summary of a landmark study in psychiatry in primary care to mediate the effect of depression on overall health status . In the treatment of patients with major depression and coronary artery disease, what is the short-term efficacy of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (citalopram) and/or interpersonal therapy? Starting with that question, it describes the basics of the study, including funding, study location, who was studied, how many patients, study design, study intervention, follow-up, endpoints, results, and criticism and limitations. The chapter briefly reviews other relevant studies and information, discusses implications, and concludes with a relevant clinical case.

Abstract:
Psychotherapy is often the treatment of choice for perinatal women who wish to limit their fetus’s or infant’s medication exposure. The vast majority of empirical research that has examined psychotherapy for perinatal women has focused on depression. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have been examined in several studies to determine their efficacy in perinatal depression and anxiety. Recent research has begun to examine the manner in which psychotherapies can be delivered in alternative formats (e.g., teletherapy) in order to overcome problems with treatment retention and compliance. Suggestions for future research include large-scale randomized controlled trials that compare two active approaches to psychotherapy, mediation studies to uncover the mechanisms of change associated with the successful treatment of perinatal women, and randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of psychotherapy for mental health disorders other than depression.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the research and theory related to advice in health contexts. The focus is on interpersonal advice offered face-to-face or by phone from health professionals to laypeople. The first part of the chapter discusses who gives advice to whom and who seeks advice. Next, three elements that impact advice efficacy and utilization are considered: source factors, message factors, and receiver factors. The chapter then discusses the development and application of theories of advice in health contexts and identifies areas for future research. Finally, the chapter offers guidelines for those professionals in a position to provide health advice.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses current policy and program innovations in institutional corrections. Several jurisdictions have made considerable policy and program revisions in order to align correctional practices with evidence-based approaches. The authors present the advances in policies that emphasize the Risk-Need-Responsivity framework, reentry, and good-time credits in order to emphasize how these policies provide a foundation for the expansion of prison programming. Next, novel programming approaches, including efforts to build self-efficacy through strength-based approaches, build attachments and empathy to advance interpersonal skills, and address obstacles to reentry to the community, are reviewed. The link between prison programming and the legitimacy of a prison regime is discussed. Finally, a research agenda designed to advance policy and program innovations in prison settings is presented.

Reinares, María. Psychotherapeutic interventions for bipolar disorder. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198748625.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
The recurrent nature of bipolar disorder (BD), and the high morbidity and mortality associated with the illness advocate for an integrative treatment in which medication is complemented with psychological approaches. This chapter explores the role of adjunctive psychotherapy in BD. The most commonly tested psychological treatments have been cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychoeducation, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, and family intervention. Functional remediation represents a new option for patients with functional impairment. Most findings indicate the benefits of adjunctive psychological treatments to improve the outcomes of BD. Controversial results have also been found, highlighting the need for a better identification of treatment moderators and mediators to design interventions tailored to the target population. Recently, cognitive remediation, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing have begun to be tested, as well as Internet-based psychological interventions, but it is too early to draw conclusions about their efficacy.
