Wang, Jianfeng. "Consumption of Debt: An Interpersonal Relationship Approach." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195092.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the phenomenon of consumer debt in the U.S. and probes the issue of credit card debt from a consumer-centric perspective. It examines how credit card usage and credit card debt are embedded in consumers' social relations and life projects, and reveals how debtors cope within their social networks as they use credit cards and manage their credit card debt.Study 1 explores how young adults use credit cards to achieve their life goals as well as to negotiate changes in their relationships with their parents. Credit cards are an important tool for helping young people gain independence and sever their obligation to their parents. This study focuses on the initial stage of credit consumption and examines the rationale young adults use when acquiring credit cards and taking on credit card debt. Through depth interviews with 17 undergraduate students who have credit card debt, I find that the consumption of credit cards corresponds to their strategies to negotiate independence as well as obligations to their parents. The use of credit cards and management of credit card debt among young adults is a significant and symbolic aspect of their transition from childhood to adulthood, and credit cards are a transitional tool for this coming of age.Study 2 focuses on another phase of debt consumption: repayment of credit card debt. Depth interviews were conducted with 22 adult debtors who were enrolled in a debt elimination program at a credit-counseling agency. Two main theoretical themes are found. First, debtors negotiate the meaning of consumer status. The concept of normality with respect to consumer behavior changes from being based on lifestyle and possessions to a focus on maintaining consumer credibility and being a good credit citizen. Second, during the process of falling into debt and struggling to extricate oneself from debt, consumers engage in a stigma management process to deal with people in their social networks. In addition to coping with the financial consequences of debt, debtors also employ strategies to cope with debt's symbolic consequences.

Abstract:
This study examines how Taiwanese college students understand the traditional, culturally Chinese concept of Yuan and its role in their use of a new and distinctive Taiwanese social networking site—Dcard. Particular attention is paid to the Dcard’s unique friending mechanism, which provides users the opportunity to connect (or not) with one, seemingly random new friend each day at midnight. Through thematic analysis of 15 semi-structured long interviews, the study finds that Dcard users understand Yuan as a multi-faceted concept pertaining primarily to interpersonal relationships (relationalism). Users perceive Yuan to influence relationships in a predetermined, causal fashion (fatalism), but they still assert some agency in their relationships (controllability), including their ability to believe deeply in Yuan. Users perceive Yuan to play an important role Dcard use, and the concept’s different facets each influence key moments in the friending process—from receiving a friend recommendation, to the choice of whether to accept or reject that request, to the initiation and maintenance of relationships through Dcard. Dcard’s architecture, including elements of randomness and partial anonymity intensify the experience of Yuan. This study underscores the importance of studying how cultural concepts like Yuan are socially constructed and used in online contexts. More, it illustrates how social networking sites can use design and architecture to tap into culture to attract and retain users.

Zmyslinski, Anne Nicole. "Online or Face-to-Face?: Relationship Satisfaction and Attraction in Romantic Relationships Across Two Media." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2011. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/28835.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine romantic relationships that began through face-to-face (FtF) interaction or computer-mediated communication (CMC). Two hundred seventy-six participants who were currently in romantic relationships that began in person (196) or online (80) completed an online questionnaire. The study explored several relational variables (relationship satisfaction, intimacy, trust, communication satisfaction, physical attraction) and tested for differences in the two types of relationships; however, the data were not consistent with the hypotheses and research questions. Post-hoc tests revealed that sample characteristics (including sex, exclusivity of relationships, same/opposite sex relationships, and length of relationships) accounted for several differences when tested with the relational variables. Finally, the study sought to find which of these variables related to relationship satisfaction in relationships that began FtF and online. Trust and communication satisfaction significantly predicted relationship satisfaction in relationships that began FtF, and physical attraction and communication satisfaction significantly predicted relationship satisfaction in relationships that began online.

Abstract:
The current research identifies the impact of sharing day-to-day information in social network sites (SNS) on the relationships we hold within and outside of them. Stemming from the literature on self-disclosure, uncertainty reduction, personal relationships, privacy and computer-mediated communication (CMC), a concurrent triangulation research strategy is adopted to identify the patterns of relationship development and interaction in SNS. Using a mixed methods approach, five studies were conducted to determine how young adults interact via SNS. Empirical findings suggest SNS users are driven by the need to reduce uncertainty and gather information about their interaction partners. An interaction between several factors was found to impact on relationships between communication partners: the frequency of information sharing; the content of the shared information; the type of relationship held between the sender and recipient; the stage of relationship development; the medium of communication, and; an expected social contract. A conceptual model of interpersonal interaction within SNS environments is proposed, identifying the links between sharing, certainty and relationship quality, and manifested communication behaviour throughout relationship development. Implications for the fields of communication science, CMC, and social and behavioural psychology are discussed.

Zhang, Huiqi. "Socioscope: Human Relationship and Behavior Analysis in Mobile Social Networks." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc30533/.

Abstract:
The widely used mobile phone, as well as its related technologies had opened opportunities for a complete change on how people interact and build relationship across geographic and time considerations. The convenience of instant communication by mobile phones that broke the barrier of space and time is evidently the key motivational point on why such technologies so important in people's life and daily activities. Mobile phones have become the most popular communication tools. Mobile phone technology is apparently changing our relationship to each other in our work and lives. The impact of new technologies on people's lives in social spaces gives us the chance to rethink the possibilities of technologies in social interaction. Accordingly, mobile phones are basically changing social relations in ways that are intricate to measure with any precision. In this dissertation I propose a socioscope model for social network, relationship and human behavior analysis based on mobile phone call detail records. Because of the diversities and complexities of human social behavior, one technique cannot detect different features of human social behaviors. Therefore I use multiple probability and statistical methods for quantifying social groups, relationships and communication patterns, for predicting social tie strengths and for detecting human behavior changes and unusual consumption events. I propose a new reciprocity index to measure the level of reciprocity between users and their communication partners. The experimental results show that this approach is effective. Among other applications, this work is useful for homeland security, detection of unwanted calls (e.g., spam), telecommunication presence, and marketing. In my future work I plan to analyze and study the social network dynamics and evolution.

Gray, Mary Elisabeth. "The relationship of group support, majority status, and interpersonal dependency in predicting intimate partner violence." PDXScholar, 2009. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3914.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most common community responses to intimate partner violence is batterer intervention programs (BIPs), which are aimed at ending perpetrators' violent behavior. Unfortunately, however, the success rates of BIPs are questionable (Aldarondo, 2002; Gondolf, 2002) and we do not know what factors of the program facilitate decreases in abusive behavior when this does occur. Specifically, it is unknown whether and how individual characteristics interact with intervention group dynamics to facilitate change. To better understand this gap in the literature, this study investigated the relationship between social support, group majority-minority status, and interpersonal dependency in predicting intimate partner violence. The study utilizes data collected for a larger study sampling 180 men enrolled in a batterer intervention program in Portland, Oregon. It was hypothesized that partner violence is positively related to interpersonal dependency and negatively related to group social support. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that majority-minority group status moderates the relationship between group social support and intimate partner violence. As predicted, men who were more dependent on their partners also reported higher levels of psychological aggression perpetrated against their partners during the past 6-months. However, this relationship did not exist between interpersonal dependency and conflict tactics related to physical assault, injury, or sexual coercion. Further, perceived social support in the group did not predict partner violence as hypothesized. However, among men who had attended nine or fewer BIP sessions, both group social support and interpersonal dependency were positively associated with psychological aggression. Finally, among men who were involved in an intimate relationship at the time of data collection, interpersonal dependency was positively related to psychological aggression and physical assault.

Abstract:
Many studies have addressed the different perceptions that career has gained over the last decades. While in the past, the career was characterized by the ascending linear mobility, within the organizations, nowadays it has progressively changed to a boundaryless career. As such, it is characterized by more frequent transitions inside and outside the organizations. Because of that, the need for continuous learning, self-assessment, information and career management arose. In this scenario, the developmental networks are promoters of the individual development. The developmental networks perspective can be understood as the relations that support the development of the person, emerging from within or without the organizations with the participation of several hierarchical levels and multiple relationships, at the same time and at any moment of the career. One particular type of developmental network is mentoring, which is a developmental relationship between two individuals, in which the mentor leads the protégé through his self-fullfiment process. Mentoring involves career and psychosocial supports, and the mentor is defined as the individual who has offered high amounts of both, as perceived by the protégé. The former helps the latter in the process of self-fulfillment. Although academic research on mentoring has begun few decades ago, the vast majority is focused on the receiver\'s perspective, i. e., the protégé. However, it is known that the mentor is an essential player for both the quality and even the existence of the mentoring relationship. Given its key role and the lack of studies addressing this developer, this work addresses the question: \"What is the mentor\'s perception in the mentoring relationship?\". The dataset was composed by 12 mentors appointed by individuals in management level inside organizations. This is a qualitative exploratory study, in which the technique used was interviews and content analysis. Results show (1) the prevalence of self-transcendence as driver of the mentors\' development actions and (2) preference by mentors for high qualified protegés. Thus, we could hypothesize the association between cultural values and mentor\'s perception about the mentoring relationship and the importance of similarity and identification process in protegé\'s selection. Finally, we could verify the association between the mentor\'s concept adopted for this study and the cultural value of self-transcendence.

Abstract:
This research examined how college students feel about their professors requesting them to be a Facebook friend. Recognizing the ways in which professors and students communicating through social networking could produce additional educational opportunities for collaboration and instruction, while also causing tension or awkwardness as the process develops. Semistructured interviews were utilized by the researcher to obtain information from the selected participants, and the data were analyzed by comparative methods. Through this study, it was revealed that students are split on the appropriateness of professors as Facebook friends. They prefer little to no self-disclosure from their professors. They do not see Facebook friendships with professors as an invasion of their privacy. Although most students believe Facebook can be an effective educational tool, there are mixed feelings whether using Facebook as an educational tool strips the site of its originally intended social purpose, most students will accept their professor’s Facebook request but only because they feel that they have to. This study extends the limited initial research on Facebook usage in education, namely with students.

Abstract:
Several important factors are involved in the competitive dynamics of supply chains: namely the structural and relational characteristics. In this doctoral research we choose to use the relational register in order to understand the role of social networks in building coordination capacity within supply chains. The field of investigation is the Fourth Party Logistics (4PL), whose job is to design and orchestrate logistics systems without ownership of physical assets. To shed some light on this issue we engage three analytical frameworks: the inter-organizational management, the social networks paradigm and logistics services. The empirical approach was based on discourse analysis of people operating in 4PL companies. The results of our study highlight that we must rely on economical as well as social values, such as trust and interpersonal ties, in order to maintain and boost inter-organizational relationships. These social values facilitate 4PL's coordination within supply chains and legitimize its control

McGlynn, Joseph. "More connections, less connection: An examination of the effects of computer-mediated communication on relationships." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5449/.

Abstract:
The impact of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on relational behavior is a topic of increasing interest to communication scholars (McQuillen, 2003; Tidwell & Walther, 2002). One of the most interesting issues that CMC raises concerns the impact of CMC on relational maintenance and development. Using dialectical theory, social exchange theory, social information processing theory, and the hyperpersonal perspective as theoretical frameworks, this study used quantitative and qualitative analyses to identity potential effects of CMC on relationships. Study 1 (n=317) examined the effects of CMC on relational closeness, satisfaction, and social support. Study 2 (n=196) explored the reasons individuals provide for privileging computer-mediated forms of communication, and the perceived effects of using CMC in relational communication. Results indicated that quality of CMC predicted increased perceptions of social support and relationship satisfaction. Results further suggested that CMC enabled participants to manage more effectively relational tensions of autonomy-connection and openness-closedness. Specifically, individuals used CMC to retain higher levels of conversational control, and to maintain greater numbers of relationships with decreased levels of investment. This paper concludes with a discussion of implications and directions for future research.

Starker, Joan E. "The Development of a Social Network following Geographic Relocation." PDXScholar, 1988. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1217.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States is a strikingly mobile nation. Every year almost 20% of its population changes residence and about 45% moves at least once every five years. Economic considerations are a major reason for relocation as persons seek new employment or are transferred by their corporations. Relocation, however, can be a stressful life experience. It removes individuals from daily routines, alters social networks, and may be accompanied by a mixture of sadness, excitement, anger and anxiety. It requires an enormous investment of physical and emotional energy to reestablish order and stability to one's life in a new city. At the same time, relocation can be a challenge, an opportunity for advancement and adventure, and a chance to reevaluate goals and directions. A critical factor influencing adaptation to a new city is an individual's social network. The very nature of moving, however, necessitates both the loss of previous social ties and the building of a new social network. There has been an absence of attention in previous research to the way in which networks evolve and change over time. This descriptive study investigated the development of a social network following geographic relocation. The sample consisted of seventy newly relocated, married males and females referred by organizations, colleges and universities, realtors, and personal contacts. Two structured interviews were completed three months apart. The data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics. A qualitative analysis of questions regarding the experience of network development was also conducted. The results indicated that the size of the new social network changed little over time but did not reach the pre-move network size. There was an increase in levels of intimacy and the amount of social and community activity over time although pre-move levels were not attained. The building of a new network requires a considerable amount of time. A cross-sectional analysis of pre-move network data indicated it takes between 2.5 to 4.5 years in a community to attain stable levels of intimacy. The results suggested that network size stabilizes earlier than the level of intimacy. Subjects relied on their spouses for support: they received minimal social support from their new network members at time one and time two. Moreover, the new social networks were in transition and unstable. The majority of the network members named at time one were deleted at time two. Lack of time and work commitments were perceived as main obstacles to network development. Results showed that characteristics of the individual impact the development of a social network and the mobilization of social support. Gender, employment status, and social competence were the factors that most strongly influenced the social network. Although this sample was not characterized by high stress, health, finances, and work were the primary stressors. The subjects were relatively satisfied with all areas of their lives except for friendships. With the exception of homemakers, there was an increase in dissatisfaction with friendships over time. Corporations and community organizations might address this period of delayed social distress by facilitating social support at this critical time rather than ending their efforts soon after the individual arrives in the new city.

Pannier, Emmanuel. "“Có đi có lại mới toại lòng nhau" Circulation non marchande et relations sociales dans un village du delta du fleuve Rouge (Nord du Vietnam) : donner, recevoir et rendre pour s'allier." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3042/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The following ethnological research aims at grasping a few characteristic features of the Vietnamese principles of sociality, through the study of non-commercial transactions taking place in a village located in the Northern Vietnam. The first part of the doctoral thesis lists the forms, the practices and the nature of non-commercial transactions occurring in the village. The second part analyses the social meanings and functions of those symbolics transactions. The ethnographic description of the system shows that most of the transactions occurring are ritualized : on defined occasions, villagers give a gift to someone else in need and at the moment when they need it. Those non-commercial transactions can be defined as a system of ceremonial gif-giving based on mutual aid, gesture reciprocity, and moral debt. The study of the connections between the gifts given and the social relations involved in the transactions allow us to map out the organization of the social relations according to the degrees of closeness. This study ends with the analysis of the social function entailed by mutual gifts. Their role is mainly to create and strengthen tình cảm, relationships, that is to say relationships filled with spontaneous and moral feelings. Because those « bonding gifts » participate to the regulation of the personnel relationship in the village, we can consider that they embody that «fleeting moment when society sets » (Mauss, 1999: 275) in rural area in Northern Vietnam

This thesis examined 228 college students' reported use of relational maintenance behaviors and strategies and their reported perception of the degree of relational satisfaction and solidarity with the relational partners they chose to identify. The study gathered extensive data with the intention of primarily investigating the validity and reliability of measurement of relational maintenance behaviors across cultures with some attention to correlations between relationship maintenance behaviors, relationship satisfaction, and interpersonal solidarity. The study focused on refining previous measures of relationship maintenance behaviors in order to develop a comprehensive global measure. The study found that a linear combination of factors or relationship maintenance behaviors are related to relational satisfaction and interpersonal solidarity.

Iannarino, Nicholas Thomas. "Social Support in Young Adult Cancer Survivors and Their Close Social Network Members." UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/comm_etds/27.

Full text
Abstract:
A cancer diagnosis often causes biographical disruption in the lives of young adult (i.e., 18-39; YA) survivors and their close social network members (i.e., familial, plutonic, or romantic relational partners with whom the survivor has a salient relationship; SNM). In order to integrate their illness into their lives, normatively regain balance and equilibrium, and achieve a “new normal” following a cancer diagnosis, YA survivors and their close SNMs must work to reconstruct their biographies by engaging in tangible interpersonal communication processes often used to initiate and maintain relationships. However, YA cancer survivors report facing social struggles due to the biographical disruption of their illness across the trajectory of diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. To learn more about their unique social experience of cancer, I conducted private, open-ended narrative interviews with 20 YA survivor-close SNM dyads, 1 YA survivor-SNM close triad, and 10 individual YA survivors (N = 51). I used thematic narrative analysis to determine how and why YA cancer survivors and their close SNMs communicate social support messages with romantic partners, family, friends, peers, and one another. By examining the narratives of YA survivors, their close SNMs, and the dyad itself, this dissertation explores the interpersonal communication processes used to initiate and maintain relationships across the illness trajectory by focusing on the barriers and facilitators these individuals experience in the communication of social support. Through their individual narrative accounts, YA survivors explained why and how they perceived various support attempts from others to be positive or negative, and their close SNMs detailed their attempts to navigate the YA’s larger support network and assume the duties inherent in their newly-adopted “top supporter” role. In addition, reports from YAs and their SNMs revealed that they often engaged in mutual pretense, a unique and often unsustainable form of support that occurred between YA survivors and their close SNMs involving topic avoidance and emotional management. Implications for the advancement of interpersonal communication theory and for practical intervention targeting YA patients and survivors, their close SNMs, and medical practitioners are also discussed.

Abstract:
The termination of a romantic relationship, be it by breakup or divorce, is a fairly ubiquitous experience. Most individuals will recover from a traumatic experience of this nature; some however, experience substantial difficulties in recuperating that persist over time. For these individuals, relationship termination can invoke a variety of negative physical and psychological health outcomes. This project examines the role of social cognitive maturity, operationalized as Interpersonal Decentering, in recovery following a relational loss. Participants in this study were assigned to a pre/post control or measurement intensive (four visits) condition over the course of nine weeks. Individuals in the latter condition completed a Stream of Consciousness (SOC) task in which they discussed their breakup experience out loud for four minutes. These narratives were then transcribed and scored using the Interpersonal Decentering manual as adapted for Expressive Writing. Results indicate that – for women only – mature social cognition is inversely related to depressive mood at the initial visit. However, it is not related to initial PSTD symptomatology for men or women, nor does it predict decreases in depression and trauma symptomatology from the initial visit to the nine-week follow-up. Implications, limitations, and future directions for research of this nature are discussed.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the relationship between emotional intelligence, self-esteem and interpersonal communication satisfaction. Emotional intelligence was conceptualized into two major competences: personal competence and social competence. Self-esteem was conceptualized as the dimension between the actual and the ideal self. Interpersonal communication satisfaction is the pleasurable sensation someone feels after a satisfying interpersonal communication experience. The study explored if there is a positive relationship between emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication satisfaction. The second purpose of the study was to investigate if there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and interpersonal communication satisfaction. Students were recruited from four colleges in northern California and were asked to complete a four-section questionnaire. The Self-Esteem Scale, the Interpersonal Communication Satisfaction Scale, and the Emotional Intelligence Scale were used in the study. These three scales have been used in past studies and show good reliability. To analyze the data a correlation analysis was conducted. The results of the study showed that there is a positive correlation between emotional intelligence, self-esteem and interpersonal communication satisfaction. There was also a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and self-esteem. These findings suggest that a person's interpersonal communication experience will be more satisfying if the person has high emotional intelligence and high self-esteem.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to investigate, acquire knowledge, and better comprehend the transportation planning and modeling community. This task is accomplished through the investigation of existing social and professional networks within this community by constructing and analyzing an abstract network representation of this community. Specifically, this research explores the actors (i.e., professionals, agencies) and their relationships (i.e., ties, interactions, etc.) within the professional interpersonal (social) network where they conduct business on a regular basis. Actors and relationships are represented in terms of a nodes and links within the constructed network. The network is then analyzed in an effort to answer questions such as, who are the actors, where do interpersonal relationships exist, where are social structures found, what does the evolution of this community look like over time, and what can this evolution tell us. This study has collected information from transportation professionals directly associated with the decision-making, planning and/or modeling process within the transportation planning and modeling community. The data is collected through an in-house designed online survey disseminated to the identified target audience. The designed survey is structured to capture information required for the identification of actors and relationships (or entities and ties) within the transportation planning and modeling community. With the network constructed, analysis methods derived from mathematics, computer science and social network analysis fields are implemented to identify local and global patterns, "influential" actors, and collaborative structures as well as examine network dynamics, which transpire within the environment that these transportation professionals navigate, form bonds, and collect information on frequent basis.

Abstract:
Over more than a decade, IS research has examined the role of trust in the context of technology adoptions, such as website acceptance (Gefen et al. 2003), successful online interactions (Coppola et al. 2004) and recommendation agent usage (Wang and Benbasat 2005). The primary antecedent of trust in this line of research is trustee’s trustworthiness. However, Dashiti et al. (2011) articulated the effect of trust- received (trustor’s felt trust from trustee) on trust-given (trustor’s trust in trustee) and consequently the trusting behaviors in the e-government context. This study aims to investigate the context of online social networks (OSNs) and to test whether trust-received plays a similar role in forming the interpersonal trust among Facebook user’s interactions. Based on this trust reciprocity theory, this study aims to find out (i) whether users are more willing to trust others and share their personal information with them when individuals experienced trust-received and (ii) what factors, especially what IT features, influence trust-received in personal networking context. We hypothesize that information sensitivity and audience limitation are two main influencing factors over users’ trust-received on Facebook. We analyzed our hypotheses using an online scenario-based survey, and based on our findings we proposed a new IT artifact in the follow-up study to explore more trust-received influencing factors. We found that audience limitation (an IT artifact) has the most significant impact over trust-received and that reciprocity of trust does exist on Facebook. We also concluded that the mentioning of a virtual function in which the re-share could be switched on or off has an effect over trust-received under certain circumstances. Thus we concluded that IT artifacts can help build or maintain online users relationships and that trust can form from a reciprocity pattern.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to develop a malware threat avoidance model for users of online social networks (OSNs). To understand the research domain, a comprehensive and systematic literature review was conducted and then the research scope was established. Two design science iterations were carried out to achieve the research aim reported in this thesis. In the first iteration, the research extended the Technology Threat Avoidance Theory (TTAT) to include a unique characteristic of OSN - Mass Interpersonal Persuasion (MIP). The extended model (TTAT-MIP), focused on investigating the factors that needs to be considered in a security awareness system to motivate OSN users to avoid malware threats. Using a quantitative approach, the results of the first iteration suggests perceived severity, perceived threat, safeguard effectiveness, safeguard cost, self-efficacy and mass interpersonal persuasion should be included in a security awareness system to motivate OSN users to avoid malware threats. The second iteration was conducted to further validate TTAT-MIP through a Facebook video animation security awareness system (referred in this thesis as Social Network Criminal (SNC)). SNC is a Web-based application integrated within Facebook to provide security awareness to OSN users. To evaluate TTAT-MIP through SNC, three research techniques were adopted: lab experiments, usability study and semi-structured interviews. The results suggest that participants perceived SNC as a useful tool for malware threat avoidance. In addition, SNC had a significant effect on the malware threat avoidance capabilities of the study participants. Moreover, the thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews demonstrated that the study participants' found SNC to be highly informative; persuasive; interpersonally persuasive; easy to use; relatable; fun to use; engaging; and easy to understand. These findings were strongly related to the constructs of TTAT-MIP. The research contributes to theory by demonstrating a novel approach to design and deploy security awareness systems in a social context. This was achieved by including users' behavioural characteristic on the online platform where malware threats occur within a security awareness system. Besides, this research shows how practitioners keen on developing systems to improve security behaviours could adopt the TTAT-MIP model for other related contexts.

Abstract:
Mentoring is an important means of developing talent. Typically, mentoring involves two individuals – a mentor, who provides career development and psychosocial support to a less experienced counterpart (the protege). Because mentoring is related to several desired outcomes such as career advancement, and job satisfaction, it is important to understand which individual characteristics are important to obtaining or providing effective mentoring. It is also necessary to examine potential but unconfirmed outcomes of mentoring such as social network status. This study examined the relationships between several individual characteristics, namely social intelligence and emotional intelligence, and mentoring relationships. In addition, this study examined the relationships between mentoring and social network status. In this non-experimental study, there were several unique relationships among these constructs. The results indicate a person's social intelligence is indicative of their status as a mentor (or not a mentor) but is not related to status as a protege (or not a protege). In addition, a mentor's perception of the costs and benefits of mentoring were explained by the protege's social intelligence and emotional intelligence. A mentor's social intelligence also explained the quality of the mentoring given. Finally, a mentor's social network status was related to the protege's social network status but this relationship was not due to the mentoring received. This study provides one of the first examinations of the relationship between mentoring and social network status and provides areas for future research and practical considerations.

Abstract:
Facebook is among the top used websites in the world, and research has shown that Facebook use is related to individual personality characteristics such as well-being and self-esteem. This study builds on previous research, expanding to investigate attachment-related anxiety and avoidance and relational certainty. The current study examined relationships between Facebook use (both general and for surveillance) and relational certainty, attachment-related anxiety and avoidance, and self-esteem in undergraduate students (N = 261). Online methods were used for data collection, and individuals with their relationship displayed on Facebook reported more relational certainty; however, the more time they spent on the site, the less certain they were with their relationship. Individuals with high attachment-related anxiety were more likely to use Facebook for surveillance, and both attachment anxiety and Facebook use for surveillance were linked to lower self-esteem. These findings indicate that individuals with their relationship status displayed on Facebook have more relational certainty and exhibit less attachment-related anxiety and avoidance. Individuals with high attachment anxiety use Facebook for surveillance. These results add to the expanding literature on Facebook and social networking sites, showing that different people use Facebook in varying ways. As social networking continues to be a staple in the lives of nearly one billion users, it is important to keep researching how people use it and what the potential implications of this use are.

Ogilvie-Whyte, Sharon Anne. "An analytical ethnography of children's agency, power and social relations : an actor-network theory approach." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/17093.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis connects with and extends inter alia the recent but as yet peripheral move within the sociology of childhood to open up children's agency to empirical analysis. Drawing heuristically upon actor-network theory and thought of this kind its aim is to expose the networks of heterogeneous associations upon which children's agency and power depends. Focusing upon children's every day play activities; the analytical lens is extended to consider the role of nonhumans that are embedded in children's mundane play interactions within their local neighbourhood and within their school playground. In doing so, this thesis argues that nonhumans are crucial participants in social interaction that are implicated in and pivotal to the heterogeneous networks of associations that children, as heterogeneous engineers, actively create to achieve their particular goals and desires. As a corollary to this, an analytical incorporation of nonhumans has drawn attention to the wider role that nonhumans play in the life worlds of children. In respect to this, the argument this thesis advances is that nonhumans,in their diverse forms, are functionally important in holding children's social relations in place. Drawn from ethnographic fieldwork with children, this thesis argues that children's agency, power and social relations, take their form and are an outcome of the heterogeneous associations that take place between humans and `things'.

"An empirical exploration of virtual community participation: the interpersonal relationship perspective." Thesis, 2006. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6074175.

Full text
Abstract:
These results have implications for VC organizers as well as VC researchers. For researchers, the interpersonal relationship perspective of VC participation not only offers a comprehensive theoretical framework but also opens a new perspective for future research.
This dissertation contributes to virtual community research by proposing and empirically validating an exploratory theoretical framework from the interpersonal relationship perspective using two interpersonal behavior theories---the Triandis interpersonal behavior model and FIRO (Fundamental Interpersonal Relationship Orientation) to explain two types of VC participation---BOI (Behavior to Obtain Information) and BGI (Behavior to Give Information). Data was collected in three representative Chinese VCs. Data analysis results showed that the two interpersonal relationship theories are effective in explaining VC participation. Specifically, 53% of the variance of BOI and 41% of the variance of BGI are explained by the Triandis model. VC participation habit is found to have the largest positive effect on BOI and BGI. BOI also has a positive effect on BGI. The conclusion from the FIRO theory is that the three dimensions of FIRO---inclusion, control, and affection---constructed in two directions, wanted and expressed, significantly influence VC participation. Wanted and expressed inclusion have positive effects on both BOI and BGI; expressed control has a positive effect on BGI, and wanted control has a positive effect on both BOI and BGI; and expressed affection has a positive effect on BGI, and wanted affection has a positive effect on both BOI and BGI.
Virtual communities (VCs) have emerged as one of the most popular Internet services during the last decade and have been effective tools in knowledge management, customer relationship management, and other business related functions. The growth of VCs is crucial to VC operation, which mainly depends on the members and their participation. Only after the aggregation of a critical mass of members can VCs accumulate invaluable information and diversity to generate revenue for the VC organizers. Thus, understanding of VC participation is of importance to VC organizers. Although VC participation has been explored from diverse perspectives, few studies can offer a comprehensive theoretical framework to explain why people participate in VCs.
