Abstract:
AbstractThis article argues that the Impersonal Contruction (IC) of French, which displays unaccusative syntax but allows unergative verbs, refutes the Unaccusative Hypothesis (UH) and the principles of lexically driven mapping. It is demonstrated that three types of argument intended to explain unaccusative mismatches are untenable while maintaining the UH. An account of the verbs appearing in the IC is proposed, based on the principles of free linking of arguments and postsyntactic compositional interpretation, taking into account meaning contributed by diverse sources, including lexical, syntactic, constructional, and morphological meaning, which must be compatible. It is argued that the shape of IC sentences requires that a state of affairs be predicated of a locative; various consequences for verb and argument selection and tense arise from this requirement. By removing certain semantico-syntactic functions from the lexicon, economy is achieved in both the lexicon and the syntactic component.

Abstract:
Abstract The present paper aims to present an inventory of Romanian middle contructions (se‑verbal constructions), and to extend the analysis to other structures (with or without se) that were not previously investigated, but exhibit the same characteristics, and seem to allow middle reading (adjunct middles). Since Jespersen (1927), middles were attested cross-linguistically, and the focus on middles is justified if we consider the fact that this is an interesting testing ground for theories of syntax, semantics and their interaction (Fagan 1992). Starting from Grahek’s definition (2008, 44), in this paper, middles are a heterogeneous class of constructions that share formal properties of both active and passive structures: on the one hand, they have active verb forms, but, on the other hand, like passives, they have understood subjects and normally display promoted objects. The corpus analysis will focus on the particular contexts in which the middle reading is triggered: i) the adverbial modification; ii) the modal/procedural interpretation of the event; iii) the responsibility of the subject; iv) the arbitrary interpretation of the implicit argument which follows from the generic interpretation (Steinbach 2002).

Abstract:
The article deals with the contruction of the conception of romantic love in the productions of the Polish film director Kieslowski. Erik Svendsen discusses the idea of romantic love as a silent criticism of the authoritarian regimes in Eastern Europe and points out, too, the similarities to the Communist interpretation of love as it was perceived and proclaimed by Alexandra Kollontay. The heritage of Kieslowski is the cultural heritage of both Communism and Catholicism in Poland.

Abstract:
The objective of the study is to comprehend how the practice of Pemale Genital Cutting (PGC), or 'sunat perempuan' in local term, reflects a social contruction of sexuality in Indonesia society, and how it relates to sexual and reproductive health. The study was conducted during 2002 in Yogyakarta and Madura, considering that both areas have distinct sociocultural contexts. The study reveals that PGC, as MGC, is socially meant 'to Islamize' member of society. The male religious leaders' dominance and rigid interpretations of Islamic holy books may be conducive for male-biased sexual behaviors and harmfulprocedures of PGC among Madurese. Among Javanese, by contrast, PGC is known as a part of court tradition, to be connected with a puberty rite which articulates symbolic actions. As opened social discourse is more accepted among Javanese, PGC is easily forgotten. Nonetheless, the meaning of PGC as a puberty rite has served as a basis for gender divisions among Javanese todays.
