AbstractRecent investigations at mountaintop sites around the Ayacucho Basin in the central Andes have identified a distinctive category of isolated Inca stone-faced platforms. Test excavations of the three-tiered platform at one site, Incapirqa/Waminan, revealed a narrow vertical shaft penetrating from the original surface through the fills to a small basin cut into the underlying andesite bedrock. A carefully arranged deposit of three unusual stones was found in this basin. Early Spanish chroniclers give firsthand accounts of a variety of Inca solar rituals observed in Cuzco in which revered

One of the more common finds made on later prehistoric sites in Sussex is humanly-transported stone. By reviewing traditional approaches to such finds and considering the implications of their study—in context—for a range of differing social models previously applied to the interpretation of the important Middle Bronze Age settlement site of Black Patch, Alciston, the present paper demonstrates how such study can inform our understanding of the later prehistoric period generally. The article presents the materials from excavations of mound No. 2 of the Karban-I burial complex. This site, located on the left bank of the Katun river, in the Chemal Region of the Altai Republic, was explored by an expedition of the Barnaul State Pedagogical Institute in 1989-1990. The published object is a small stone mound, under which, at the level of the ancient horizon, the remains of two people were discovered, placed in adjacent stone boxes made of slabs. Based on the totality of its characteristics, this complex can be attributed to the Biyke archaeological culture of the Early Scyt

This paper demonstrates how these ideas were accommodated within the Christian ideology and how it was discovered that stone axes were actually man-made tools. Palaeolithic stone plaquettes are a type of mobiliary art featuring engravings and recovered primarily from Magdalenian sites, where they can number from single finds to several thousand examples. Where context is available, they demonstrate complex traces of use, including surface refreshing, heating, and fragmentation. However, for plaquettes with limited or no archaeological context, research tends to gravitate toward their engraved surfaces. This paper focuses on 50 limestone plaquettes excavated by Peccadeau de l’Isle from Montastruc, a Magdalenian rockshelter site in southern France with

Gotland’s picture stones are a unique source for the study of pre-Christian religion. However, there are many still unsolved problems that make it difficult to use this treasure. The main problem is the cur- rent condition of the figurative carvings, which in many cases are hardly recognizable. S. Lindqvist, in his 1941/42 edition of the stones, traced the fig- ures with paint to make them visible. More than half a century after the publication of his book, digital methods can be applied in order to improve the documentation and make it more objective. I demonstrate these methods and their rel

Since the beginning of the previous century, scholars have developed a discussion on a variety of issues in their attempt to better understand the architectural evolution of the Sicilian stone theatres, and in particular of their scene building. The most apparent and persistent problems lie in the uncertainty of dating and the morphology of each of the scene buildings. That is due to various difficulties that will be discussed further into this article. Over the last 100 year

This has been a relatively quiet year in terms of newly-discovered Cretan material appearing for the first time in print. The main event was the continued publication of the backlog of Archaiologikon Deltion with the appearance of the 2005 volume. This, of course, contained a lot less material than last year's volume, which covered four years, 2001–2004. As a result, the disadvantages of late publication were more apparent, since all the most notable finds will already be known to the wider community from other sources, leaving only the most minor of rescue excavations as truly new material.Ga

The geg dialect is a dialect in which important figures and personalities of Albanian culture, art and literature have written, leaving a rich and very enviable fund of literary critics of art and moreover of scholars of language and dia

For architects, stone is the most enduring of all materials available to construct their dreams. Mark Burry’s chapter draws on critical aspects of Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí's personal development, and life on the construction site for the Sagrada Família Basilica during and after his death. Insights into the paradox of tangible versus intangible materiality are explored: interpreting Gaudí’s position with regard to the colliding forces of traditional and innovative construction in a time of rapidly increasing industrialisation and material invention. When analyzing borehole image data, more is generally better. More sensors, higher resolution and multiple post-processing filters are typical strategies for ensuring that no important reservoir information is being missed. Handling large amounts of data can however be a hurdle. Storing the information at the time of measurement or sending large size data from downhole to the edge rig and then to the town geologist becomes a challenge. Analysis is another issue: How do you decide which channel to look at to extract the best information for reservoir characterization? In this work we propose a
