Abstract:
People with intersex conditions have male-typical and female-typical traits, to varying degrees in genetics and anatomy. Because of these variations, people with intersex conditions or disorders of sexual development can face difficulties related to their identities and relationships. As a matter of ethics, clinicians should exhibit humane behavior toward patients of all ages as they explore the meaning of their intersex condition for their health and well-being. Clinicians can also help families understand the meaning of that condition for their children and themselves. Clinicians will also have responsibilities toward child, adolescent, and adult patients bearing on the psychological effects of body modifications taken to normalize their sexual appearance. In addition, clinicians will have the responsibility to address the effects of body modifications hoped for by the patient. Observance of confidentiality is key in relationships with intersex patients.

Abstract:
This chapter provides excerpts of the Colombian Constitutional Court’s case law on dignity and autonomy. Like some European legal orders, Colombian constitutionalism is centered on the protection of human dignity, understood as the protection of a minimum level of subsistence (see Chapter 6), as well as broad respect for human autonomy in fundamental choices. It covers the jurisprudence of the Court legalizing possession of a personal dose of drugs as well as euthanasia, protecting the decisional autonomy of children in a school setting, protecting the autonomy and dignity of intersex children, and legalizing abortion in certain circumstances. These topics are noteworthy because they demonstrate the Court’s insistence on protecting human autonomy within a historical context that has often sacrificed the individual for the collective.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines two innovative sex- and gender-based biopsychosocial interventions: Couples Coping with Cancer Together and Single Fathers Due to Cancer. The foundation of each intervention is based on strengths inherent to the participants’ gender. Couples Coping with Cancer Together focuses on patients and partners during both active treatment and survivorship. Single Fathers Due to Cancer engages widowed fathers and their children. These two programs illustrate the relevance of sex (a one-time biological event determined at conception: male, female, intersex) and gender (how individuals defines themselves and their lives) differences in coping with the challenges of cancer. Future research is essential to empirically explore interventional studies that focus on gender-related strengths.
