Guilford, William Harold. "Mechanical interactions between arterioles and the interstitium." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186366.

Full text
Abstract:
Arterioles are embedded in the extensive connective tissue matrix of the interstitium. Mechanical interactions with the interstitium may affect the length-tension characteristics of arterioles, and thus affect their reactivity. However, no studies have adequately characterized the coupling between arterioles and the interstitium or investigated how the interstitium might change the physiological expression of arterioles. Therefore, the goal of this project was to directly characterize the physical connections between arterioles and the interstitium, both mechanically and morphologically, and t

Abstract:
In clinical cardiology, different imaging technologies can be used to assess cardiac anatomy, ventricular function and focal myocardial disease. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) using late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) is the gold standard non-invasive method for focal myocardial tissue characterisation. However it has limitations, including not allowing quantification of the extracellular volume (ECV) or assessment of diffuse processes. In this thesis, these shortcomings were addressed using novel CMR T1 based methodologies. In early work, the ECV was assessed in health and a variety of

Tumour blood flow plays a critical role in tumour growth and cancer therapies. Computational fluid dynamics is an efficient method to study blood behaviour by modelling fluid flow through numerical simulations. A mathematical model is developed to study the blood flow through a three-dimensional permeable vascular network embedded in a solid tumour, and its transvascular movement and spread within tumour interior in context with cancer therapies. The vasculature is described by the parametric equations in terms of vessel centre lines. The flow through each tumour vessel is approximated with th

Kidney failure results in fluid and toxin accumulation within body fluid compartments, contributing to the excess mortality seen in this condition. Such uremic toxins have been measured in plasma, with levels assumed to reflect extraplasmatic concentrations such as in interstitial fluid (ISF). ISF is separated from plasma by nanometre-order microvascular pores; toxins may not circulate “freely” between the two compartments. This work set out to characterise the ISF in uremic subjects, with the hypothesis that there may be differences with plasma. Any such difference may be clinically relevant,
