Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are important gastrointestinal pathogens of humans. E. coli serotype O157:H7 is the EHEC most commonly associated with human illness. E. coli O157:H7 has been found to colonise at the terminal rectum of cattle in preference to other sites in the bovine gastrointestinal tract. The small intestine is prone to infections by bacteria that can adhere to the surface wall. We wish to better understand an infection of the small intestine caused by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and to achieve this objective we present three models: a chemostat and two mechanistic spatial models in 1-D and 2-D. The chemostat model is a dynamic model where four biologically significant steady states of the infection were observed: washout, persistence, threshold, and blowup. Introduction: Intestinal bacteria influence gut morphology by affecting epithelial cell proliferation, development of the lamina propria, villus length and crypt depth [1]. Gut microbiota-derived factors have been proposed to also play a role in the development of a 30 % longer intestine, that is characteristic of PRM/Alf mice compared to other mouse strains [2, 3]. Polyamines and SCFAs produced by gut bacteria are important growth factors, which possibly influence mucosal morphology, in particular villus length and crypt depth and play a role in gut lengthening in the PRM/Alf mouse. Abstract:
The small intestinal permeability barrier is dependent on tight junction (TJ) complexes that separate the external lumen from the underlying mucosa. Apical TJs consist of integral transmembrane proteins including occludin, claudins and ZO-1 as well as the cytoplasmic plaque of TJ-associated adaptor, scaffolding and signalling proteins. Although the function of occludin at the TJ remains unclear, the dynamic mobility of occludin, claudins and ZO-1 to and from the TJ suggests occludin may play a key role in regulation of TJ structure and function, regulated by occludin phosphorylation status.

Background Necrotising enterocolitis (NEe) remains a leading cause of mortality in neonatal intensive care units. There is currently a poor understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of NEC and a lack of effective treatment strategies. Studies performed by various groups suggest that intestinal barrier failure plays a critical role in the development of NEC. The intestinal mucosal barrier is a complex defence system against the onslaught of noxious substances within the lumen, while allowing the influx of nutrients. Abstract:
Rat exon microarrays were utilized to detect changes in mRNA expression and alternative splicing in the liver, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of the lactating rat when compared to age-matched virgin controls. Analysis of data at the level of gene expression revealed differential expression of genes involved in cholesterol biosynthesis in each tissue examined, suggesting increased Sterol Response Element Binding Protein activity. We also detected decreased mRNA from components of the T-cell signaling pathway in the jejunum and ileum. We characterized expression of solute carrier and adenosine tri

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>Seawater teleost fish are hyposmotic to their environment and as a consequence must deal with a constant diffusive loss of water and a net gain of salts. In contrast to living in seawater, teleosts fish in a freshwater environment are faced with the opposite dilemma, a constant osmotic influx of water and depletion of salts. Between these environments there are estuarine regions, which are habitats of several species. The purpose of this study was to investigate Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ levels in the fluid phase and total amoun

Abstract:
Bacillus cereus is one of the known causes of diarrhoeal food poisoning. In their natural environment of soil surviving as spores facilitates their colonisation of raw food ingredients enabling their access to the food chain. Recently psychrotrophic strains of B. cereus have been reclassified based on divergent cold shock gene (cspA) sequences and renamed B. weihenstephanensis. It is the modified cspA gene that is thought to confer the psychrotolerant phenotype witnessed by these strains. Aside from cspA, B. cereus and B. weihenstephanensis are closely related, leading to questions about its p
