Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to explore the decision‐making practices and processes related to gathering, selecting, and publishing of internal corporate news through intranets in large multinationals in Finland.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on eight semi‐structured interviews of intranet editors responsible for the corporate news on the intranet.FindingsIntranet editors are the main corporate gatekeepers and agenda setters making news publication decisions; i.e. determining what is important and newsworthy. These editors make decisions independently rather than collectively, thus news gathering is greatly affected by the networking and organizational skills of the individual editors. Companies prefer neutral news. Honesty and openness are principles that justify also the publication of “bad news.”Research limitations/implicationsThis study explored how intranet editors construct reality through shaping internal communication content. The study did not attempt to assess the effects or effectiveness of this communication. Similarly, although intranet's goals and purposes were assessed, the extent to which the intranet helps the company achieve its strategic goals was not analyzed in detail. Further, research is needed to explore these important issues.Practical implicationsThis paper offers practical examples of how large multinationals convey internal news through intranets. It highlights aspects that may help companies improve intranet's strategic value by enhancing internal communication through the intranet.Originality/valueThis paper reveals the power of individual editors in constructing reality for the organization. It also offers practitioners, researchers, teachers, and students a rare view into the real‐life processes and practices related to communication via intranets that can rarely be accessed and evaluated by outsiders.

Abstract:
Much interest has been generated recently by the concept of intranets: the use of internet technology to build the communication and data storage infrastructure of the firm. While the advantages of such a concept have been widely publicized, the risks of moving to an intranet based infrastructure are less clear. ‘Fear of the unknown’ may deter some firms from taking advantage of intranets. This empirical study is based in Singapore, a country chosen for its high internet penetration and usage levels. It investigates the factors underlying successful intranet developments. Intranet success as measured by user satisfaction is related to IS management risk factors. It is found that successful intranet implementation can be largely explained by standard determinants of IS success. Some implications for management of intranet developments are discussed.

Abstract:
Intranet technology has been rapidly adopted by many organizations. From being a largely unknown technology prior to the mid-1990s, numerous organizations today have implemented or are currently implementing intranets. The intranet implementation processes of three large organizations in two countries were studied over a period of 5 years. In particular, the paper investigates the role players who spearheaded the intranet implementations in these organizations. Five interrelated roles during the intranet implementation process are identified: the technology champion, organizational sponsor, intranet coordinator, intranet developer and content provider. In the light of the nature of intranet technology, each respective role is analysed in terms of its significance, key challenges and interrelationships during the implementation process. The paper further examines the dynamics of these roles in the aftermath of implementation as the technology becomes embedded in routine organizational activity.

Abstract:
Recently, businesses have begun to utilize Intranets for internal corporate collaboration. As private networks with the functionality, compatibility, and openness of the Internet, the Intranet concept raises unique possibilities for higher education. Most colleges and universities have access to the Internet, and communications of a classroom can be electronically facilitated by a simulated Intranet with little difficulty. We present herein the results of a case study in which the Internet was used in a manner similar to that of corporate Intranets, but in college classrooms. Our Intranets were used with two objectives: first, acquainting students with the usage and power of the Internet, and second, supporting the communication processes of the classes. Based on the results, recommendations are made for Intranet use applicable to both academic and business settings.

Abstract:
The Problem Organizational culture is a central part of defining virtual human resource development (VHRD), yet little empirical research has uncovered the relationship between culture and intranets. Intranets constitute the webbed environment that enables VHRD, and much can be learned from studying an intranet used strategically for an organization. Specifically, the problem addressed in this article was the question, how does an intranet provide opportunities for learning organizational culture? The Solution Case research in a hospital setting explored the problem and found four themes for how an intranet enabled participants to learn and experience the larger culture. A primary conclusion of the study was that an intranet can convey and renew organizational culture when members interact and experience organizational values in action. Implications for human resource development (HRD) professionals include addressing the design and development of organizational systems to support cultural messages that are congruent with organizational objectives and to consider how intranets can support informal learning and community building necessary for VHRD. The Stakeholders Stakeholders for this article include HRD professionals who help implement new technology and use technical applications to support practice, leaders who oversee virtual work, and scholars who aim to further research and theory in VHRD.

Abstract:
This paper considers the application of the technology acceptance model (TAM) in explaining intranet usage in two organizations. The TAM was originally developed for explaining technology acceptance and has since been successfully applied to a number of technologies. Its suitability for modelling intranet use is considered here. The model is tested in two UK companies from the banking and engineering sectors. Study 1 finds that the TAM may be valuable as a tool for helping with analysing and understanding intranet usage. The second study indicates that its applicability may be variable between intranets and demonstrates that self-report and actual measures of usage are not interchangeable when applying such a model. The findings have implications for previous and current research employing the TAM and for intranet research in general.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines factors influencing the user acceptance of intranets in the restaurant industry. The study uses the application of the technology acceptance model (TAM) in explaining intranet usage in restaurant operations. The TAM is an exceptional model for which to predict system usage and has been successfully applied to numerous technologies. The original model was modified to include two independent variables: organization support and information quality. The survey collected data from restaurants in the United States. The results of the study showed that perceived usefulness was the main factor influencing intranet acceptance, while organization support, information quality, and perceived ease of use were not significant in the regression analysis. The findings indicate perceived usefulness of intranet use requires focus in order to improve communications in restaurant franchise systems.

Abstract:
For an organization to function the communication needs to function, for many organizationsand enterprises the intranet have become one of the primary communication and information channels. An intranet supports mainly downward information and acts as an information portal but the technology is constantly evolving and we reach new heights of what is technically possible to do. Skellefteå municipality is an organization that has chosen to renew its intranet and create a new social intranet, the social intranet differs from its predecessor in that it not only consists of static information, it is also communicative. The aim of this study is to investigate the perception that the employees in Skellefteå municipality has on the organization's new social intranet and how they use it. The study´s empirical base is gathered through six semi-structured interviews. Theories that are central to the study are inter alia: social intranets and since this study takes its approach from a receiver perspective the Uses and Gratification perspective is used since it seeks to clarify how humans function in relation to the media. The results show that there are different perceptions of the organization's new social intranet, the majority of the interviewees have a reserved attitude to the new intranet. The results also shows that the new intranet is primarily used for searching information, and when it comes to how the new social intranet is perceived as a social communication forum, none of the respondents could give a clear reply as they stated that there been no discussion of the possibility of communicating through the new intranet.

Abstract:
Many companies use intranets where only authorized personnel can share, create, and access news, events, and knowledge in a company. An intranet is a web application with dynamic content. It consists of various functions and features that facilitate the information management and knowledge flow within the company. The main goal of this project is to create and design an intranet demo that is adaptable and extendable by companies and organizations. The intranet contains various primary functions that users can interact with. The designed intranet is based on the EPiServer Content Management System framework and is programmed in back-end and front-end with the Visual Studio IDE tool. The back- end part is mainly programmed in C# language to create functions and logic such as the intranet structure and then linked to the front-end part where the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript library React is used to encode the front-end and get a user interface. The finalized intranet contains various primary functions where authorized employees have individual profiles with their status and contact information. Users can share corporate events and access corporate news.

Abstract:
Internal private networks have long been used by companies to promote communication and information sharing through local access points. As technology proceeds towards higher mobility through not only WiFi, but also 3G and 4G telecommunication systems, the need for companies to evaluate the need for externally accessing the company intranet has become apparent. To assess the value of external access through mobile devices it is of interest to identify the prerequisites needed for a successful mobile intranet. Also of note is the potential opportunities that mobile access of intranet can create within an organizations work to optimize business processes. Mobile access to important data, documents or tools could help employees on the field. In this report three studies are made to identify factors that contribute to a successful mobile intranet; a case study of a company that wishes to utilize intranet access through mobile technologies, a study of another company’s successful intranet implementation, and a study of an existing platform for intranet solutions in terms of its potential as a mobile intranet platform. Findings from these three studies are then examined to identify areas in which a mobile intranet must excel to be successful. The critical functions of regular intranet implementations are found to be equally important in a mobile context along with the importance of delivering key functions to mobile employees. The report is concluded with a presentation of a general strategy for examining and implementing mobile intranet solutions.

Abstract:
An exploratory survey of business professionals from a broad range of organizations indicates that potential intranet benefits are both difficult to achieve and highly interrelated. Although many organizations implement intranets in the hope of generating cost savings or improving knowledge sharing across organizational units, this study indicates that the only likely benefit of implementing an intranet is faster access to information. The study also suggests that the most difficult benefit to achieve is generating a more cooperative work environment, and that developing an intranet that improves the quality and relevance of information is foundational to achieving most other intranet benefits.

Harris, Jeremy, Alejandro Ramos Martínez, and Paolo Giordano. INTrade: Latin American Trade Trend Estimates: 2013. Inter-American Development Bank, December 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008278.

Full text
Abstract:
Latin American Trade Trend Estimates is an annual study published by the Integration and Trade Sector of the Inter-American Development Bank that analyses the region's trade performance based on available national and international data for selected countries. For 2013, the study reports that Latin American exports stagnated, posting a second straight year of sluggish growth. Export increases were barely over 0%, for a total value of slightly more than $1 trillion. It is also noted that the region's exports actually declined in the first months of the year, continuing a negative trend that began in late 2012. However, in the third quarter, exports began to grow again, and current estimates point to a small positive overall growth rate for the year. Results varied considerably among countries. Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela all posted declines in exports, while Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay posted increases. Results in Central America were mixed, with exports barely growing in Costa Rica and Guatemala, declining in Honduras and Nicaragua, but expanding in El Salvador, and Panama.

Full text
Abstract:
After posting double digit gains in 2010-2011, Latin America's export growth declined to just 1.5% in 2012 for a total value of slightly more than $1 trillion, according to figures just released by the Integration and Trade Sector of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). These results reflected uneven economic conditions in Latin America's major trade partners. In Europe, economic setbacks resulted in a 5% drop in demand for Latin American exports, while lower growth in the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Korea sharply slowed the region's export growth to Asia as a whole, from 25% in 2011 to only 1% this year. In one bright spot, incipient recovery in the United States fueled growth in Latin American exports to that country by an estimated 3%. The 2012 trade estimates, published in the IDB's Latin American Trade Trend Estimates 2012, are based on partial monthly and quarterly data of 16 Latin American countries from official national and international sources, as well as the Bank's INTrade Information System.

Singbo, Alphonse, Cokou Patrice Kpadé, and Lota Tamini. CIRANO, June 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.54932/czst7397.

Full text
