Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to explore the decision‐making practices and processes related to gathering, selecting, and publishing of internal corporate news through intranets in large multinationals in Finland.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on eight semi‐structured interviews of intranet editors responsible for the corporate news on the intranet.FindingsIntranet editors are the main corporate gatekeepers and agenda setters making news publication decisions; i.e. determining what is important and newsworthy. These editors make decisions independently rather than collectively, thus news gathering is greatly affected by the networking and organizational skills of the individual editors. Companies prefer neutral news. Honesty and openness are principles that justify also the publication of “bad news.”Research limitations/implicationsThis study explored how intranet editors construct reality through shaping internal communication content. The study did not attempt to assess the effects or effectiveness of this communication. Similarly, although intranet's goals and purposes were assessed, the extent to which the intranet helps the company achieve its strategic goals was not analyzed in detail. Further, research is needed to explore these important issues.Practical implicationsThis paper offers practical examples of how large multinationals convey internal news through intranets. It highlights aspects that may help companies improve intranet's strategic value by enhancing internal communication through the intranet.Originality/valueThis paper reveals the power of individual editors in constructing reality for the organization. It also offers practitioners, researchers, teachers, and students a rare view into the real‐life processes and practices related to communication via intranets that can rarely be accessed and evaluated by outsiders.

Abstract:
Much interest has been generated recently by the concept of intranets: the use of internet technology to build the communication and data storage infrastructure of the firm. While the advantages of such a concept have been widely publicized, the risks of moving to an intranet based infrastructure are less clear. ‘Fear of the unknown’ may deter some firms from taking advantage of intranets. This empirical study is based in Singapore, a country chosen for its high internet penetration and usage levels. It investigates the factors underlying successful intranet developments. Intranet success as measured by user satisfaction is related to IS management risk factors. It is found that successful intranet implementation can be largely explained by standard determinants of IS success. Some implications for management of intranet developments are discussed.

Abstract:
Intranet technology has been rapidly adopted by many organizations. From being a largely unknown technology prior to the mid-1990s, numerous organizations today have implemented or are currently implementing intranets. The intranet implementation processes of three large organizations in two countries were studied over a period of 5 years. In particular, the paper investigates the role players who spearheaded the intranet implementations in these organizations. Five interrelated roles during the intranet implementation process are identified: the technology champion, organizational sponsor, intranet coordinator, intranet developer and content provider. In the light of the nature of intranet technology, each respective role is analysed in terms of its significance, key challenges and interrelationships during the implementation process. The paper further examines the dynamics of these roles in the aftermath of implementation as the technology becomes embedded in routine organizational activity.

Abstract:
Recently, businesses have begun to utilize Intranets for internal corporate collaboration. As private networks with the functionality, compatibility, and openness of the Internet, the Intranet concept raises unique possibilities for higher education. Most colleges and universities have access to the Internet, and communications of a classroom can be electronically facilitated by a simulated Intranet with little difficulty. We present herein the results of a case study in which the Internet was used in a manner similar to that of corporate Intranets, but in college classrooms. Our Intranets were used with two objectives: first, acquainting students with the usage and power of the Internet, and second, supporting the communication processes of the classes. Based on the results, recommendations are made for Intranet use applicable to both academic and business settings.

Abstract:
The Problem Organizational culture is a central part of defining virtual human resource development (VHRD), yet little empirical research has uncovered the relationship between culture and intranets. Intranets constitute the webbed environment that enables VHRD, and much can be learned from studying an intranet used strategically for an organization. Specifically, the problem addressed in this article was the question, how does an intranet provide opportunities for learning organizational culture? The Solution Case research in a hospital setting explored the problem and found four themes for how an intranet enabled participants to learn and experience the larger culture. A primary conclusion of the study was that an intranet can convey and renew organizational culture when members interact and experience organizational values in action. Implications for human resource development (HRD) professionals include addressing the design and development of organizational systems to support cultural messages that are congruent with organizational objectives and to consider how intranets can support informal learning and community building necessary for VHRD. The Stakeholders Stakeholders for this article include HRD professionals who help implement new technology and use technical applications to support practice, leaders who oversee virtual work, and scholars who aim to further research and theory in VHRD.

This paper considers the application of the technology acceptance model (TAM) in explaining intranet usage in two organizations. The TAM was originally developed for explaining technology acceptance and has since been successfully applied to a number of technologies. Its suitability for modelling intranet use is considered here. The model is tested in two UK companies from the banking and engineering sectors. Study 1 finds that the TAM may be valuable as a tool for helping with analysing and understanding intranet usage. The second study indicates that its applicability may be variable between intranets and demonstrates that self-report and actual measures of usage are not interchangeable when applying such a model. The findings have implications for previous and current research employing the TAM and for intranet research in general.

Abstract:
This study examines factors influencing the user acceptance of intranets in the restaurant industry. The study uses the application of the technology acceptance model (TAM) in explaining intranet usage in restaurant operations. The TAM is an exceptional model for which to predict system usage and has been successfully applied to numerous technologies. The original model was modified to include two independent variables: organization support and information quality. The survey collected data from restaurants in the United States. The results of the study showed that perceived usefulness was the main factor influencing intranet acceptance, while organization support, information quality, and perceived ease of use were not significant in the regression analysis. The findings indicate perceived usefulness of intranet use requires focus in order to improve communications in restaurant franchise systems.

Abstract:
Despite the popularity of electronic information resources among young people and the prevalence of organisational intranets in schools, few researchers have exploited the potential of intranet usage logs to investigate pupils' information behaviour. Nevertheless, the method is attractive on several counts. As it enables data to be collected without the participants' knowledge, it is unlikely to affect behaviour and highly objective data can be gathered. This material can lead to the use of supplementary methods allowing the elicitation of detailed qualitative data. Researchers are, however, restricted to the types of insights that the system log provides and are further constrained by the purposes for which school managers use their intranet. Ethical questions surrounding the gathering of data that participants are not aware is being generated may also be asked. Notwithstanding these issues, intranet usage logs clearly offer considerable potential for the investigation of information behaviour in a range of contexts.

Abstract:
Securing corporate networks and ensuring the trustworthiness of network resources are critical security concerns for organisations in today's interconnected digital landscape. The zero-trust security model is an approach to designing and implementing ICT systems which prescribes that clients and servers cannot be trusted automatically, even when connected to networks traditionally considered trusted. The implementation of the zero-trust model within the corporate intranet requires a secure method to verify the identity of local servers. On the Internet, trust in the identity of public servers is established by well-known public Certificate Authorities (CAs), which issue digital certificates to securely identify servers. However, local intranet servers exist within the internal address space of the network. Consequently, it is impossible to naturally obtain digital certificates for these servers, validly signed by a public CA, without publicly disclosing sensitive information such as intranet server Domain Name System (DNS) records. This leaves organisations with the option of relying on endpoint management systems to install custom CA root certificates on all corporate browsers or, in some cases, ignoring the problem altogether. In this paper, we draw on practical experience in the deployment of cybersecurity devices in corporate intranets to formally define the intranet certification problem. We specify five requirements that a solution to this problem must satisfy. We then conduct a comprehensive review of existing candidate solutions and academic research relevant to the intranet certification problem. Specifically, existing ICT systems for public key infrastructure and endpoint management are identified and evaluated with respect to their ability to meet the stated requirements for solving the intranet certification problem, as well as their cost. Our study reveals that solutions that meet the technical and security requirements of the intranet certification problem are beyond the reach of smaller private sector companies and public sector organisations in underdeveloped and emerging economies. The high cost and technical expertise required for their implementation and management render these solutions impractical. Consequently, by relying on servers with self-signed certificates, these entities inadvertently leave their servers susceptible to impersonation, information theft, and unauthorised resource access, thus violating the fundamental principles of the zero-trust model. We conclude that a gap exists for a simple, cost-effective, and easily managed solution to the intranet certification problem.

A major determinant of the success of educational intranet sites is their usability. In addition to measures of task performance and navigation behavior, psychometric instruments are used to evaluate usability and the quality of human-computer interaction more generally. However, there is a lack of validated instruments for the evaluation of sites. The aim of the present study was to establish the psychometric properties of scales for measuring the quality of interaction with educational intranets. In two experiments, undergraduates ( n = 81 and n = 109, respectively) performed an information retrieval task using different versions of the same university intranet site. Psychometric properties of the instruments were analyzed. The quality of the scales is evaluated, recommendations for their use are given, and further research into the scales is outlined.

AbstractThere are high expectations on what social intranets can do for productivity. However, there is still a large gap between promise and delivery, mainly caused by a misunderstanding of the user perspective. Usability of social intranets needs to be redefined in a holistic way, integrating the four dimensions of business, culture, technology and communication. And we need to build this integration into the workflow of social intranet teams by establishing a cross-functional body steering the project.

This paper presents the results of a longitudinal exploratory survey based on a sample of French firms. Different contexts of Intranet, as well as introduction, development stages, performance and Intranet content are presented. Three approaches are in existence: corporate Intranet, specialized Intranet and HR Intranet. These can be linked to different stages of development: communication, functional support, and knowledge management. The HR Function will be successful if it integrates Intranet in its management process, if the players are aware of the stakes and they behave as “real change agents”. Research shows the importance of strategic alignment between human resource management (HRM) and Intranet as well as the relevance of technological infusion, therefore, this paper’s result in showing a configurative approach that allows the integration of more variables and in turn leads to a systemic model contains great significance.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is twofold: to investigate the impact of franchisor support on quick service restaurant (QSR) users’ intranet acceptance; and to examine the technology acceptance model (TAM) to explain QSR users’ attitude toward the franchise intranet usage. Franchisors are building intranet systems as a communication tool to assist their franchisees in performing their jobs better. However, there is a little available literature that discusses in detail the use of the intranet by franchise systems. Design/methodology/approach – This study adopted the TAM to investigate the acceptance of the intranet in the context of QSR franchise systems. The original TAM was modified to include an external variable, franchise support. A total of 161 returned and completed responses were examined. Descriptive analysis, validity, principal component factor analysis and regression analysis were used to estimate the relationships between constructs. Findings – The key finding of this study is that franchise support is a key in the decision for users to use intranet systems in the QSR franchise systems. This study also confirmed that there are positive and significant relationships among key variables: franchise support, perceived usefulness of intranet, perceived ease of use of intranet, attitude toward using intranet and behavioral intentions to use intranet. Regression analysis revealed that TAM is a valid model in predicting intranet adoption in restaurant franchise systems. Originality/value – This study pursued franchise support, which was not included in the original TAM, to see how it affects perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and intention to use. In addition, a list of recommendations for improving the situation in that franchise organization is provided.

Abstract:
New router design solution optimized to use the IPv6 RA protocol packets is raised to meet the demand of the security of IPv6 intranet without weakening the end-to-end security of IPv6. Source addresses of nodes in IPv6 intranet change dynamically. That helps to hide the nodes addresses and protect the nodes against attack from extranet. No any additional modification is needed on the intranet nodes. Flexibility of administration and security of intranet is improved with this solution.

Abstract:
To retain valuable information to the maximum extent and enhance the ability to mine the crude oil trade purchase price demand, this paper proposes a crude oil trade purchase model based on the DEA-Malmquist algorithm. The intranet of the management and control platform shall share the same database, and the intranet shall only allow managers to access and manage the system and only allow all registered users to access and realize data exchange between the intranet and the intranet through two-dimensional code scanning; moreover, due to the resource sharing between the intranet and the intranet for crude oil trade procurement, suppliers and other registered users can immediately grasp the procurement trends of enterprises. Under the DEA-Malmquist algorithm, the uncertainty of procurement management is analyzed by fuzzy theory, and the refined procurement decision model with fuzzy parameters is established. The optimal order time and purchase quantity are determined through the symbol distance and the method of the center of gravity. Experimental results show that the method can effectively retain valuable information in the initial sequence and has better practical application value of material procurement demand intelligent mining. The proposed model obtained the highest accuracy of 98.62%.

Abstract:
Intranet, a private corporate network that mirrors the internet Web structure, is the new internal communication technology being embraced by more than 50% of large US companies. Within the intranet, computers using Web-server software store and manage documents built on the Web’s hypertext markup language (HTML) format. This emerging technology allows disparate computer systems within companies to “speak” to one another using the Internet’s TCP/IP protocol. A “fire wall” allows internal users Internet access, but denies external intruders intranet access. As industrial microscopists, how can we take advantage of this new technology? This paper is a preliminary summary of our recent progress in building an intranet Web system among GE microscopy labs. Applications and future development are also discussed. The intranet Web system is an inexpensive yet powerful alternative to other forms of internal communication. It can greatly improve communications, unlock hidden information, and transform an organization. The intranet microscopy Web system was built on the existing GE corporate-wide Ethernet link running Internet’s TCP/IP protocol (Fig. 1). Netscape Navigator was selected as the Web browser. Web’s HTML documentation was generated by using Microsoft® Internet Assistant software. Each microscopy lab has its own home page. The microscopy Web system is also an integrated part of GE Plastics analytical technology Web system.
