Abstract:
Intraoperative graft failure contributes to cardiac morbidity and mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This results in perioperative myocardial infarction which is detectable in up to 9% of patients following arterial grafts and off pump CABG, but these are more technically demanding and emphasise the need for intraoperative assessment of graft patency and quality.

There is a clear need for more accurate techniques to assess tumour resection margins intraoperatively in breast-conserving surgery (BCS), as to date an average 10 – 30% of patients undergoing BCS require a re-operation to achieve clear margins. This thesis evaluates two novel imaging techniques for intraoperative tumour margin assessment, Terahertz Pulsed Imaging (TPI) and Cerenkov Luminescence Imaging (CLI), that have been developed with a view to reducing reoperation rates in BCS. Both techniques were evaluated in a first-in-human, single centre study to demonstrate proof-of-principle and f

Abstract:
Background: The Dutch Linguistic Intraoperative Protocol (DuLIP) is a battery of tests that allows the language evaluation in pre, intra and postoperative of patients with low grade gliomas. The patient is awake during surgery which allows brain mapping using direct electrical stimulation. The Portuguese version of DuLIP (DuLIP-EP) includes phonology, syntax, semantics, naming and articulation tasks. This Dissertation focuses on the eight semantics tasks. Aim: Translate and adapt DuLIP semantic tasks to European Portuguese. Methods: A qualitative and quantitative study was performed to transl

Abstract:
<div> Advancements in cancer treatments have increased rapidly in recent years, but cures remain elusive. Surgical tumor resection is a central treatment for many solid malignancies. Residual tumor at surgical margins leads to tumor recurrence. Novel tools for assessing residual tumor at surgical margins could improve surgical outcomes by helping to maximize the extent of resection. Ambient ionization-mass spectrometry (MS) methods generate and analyze ions from minimally prepared samples in near-real-time (e.g. seconds to minutes). This study aims to identify common intraoperative events experienced by CHD patients undergoing non-cardiac surgeries using more recent data, while at the same time analyzing to see if there is any difference in frequency of intraoperative events experienc

Red blood cells are a scarce resource whose demand often exceeds its supply. Intraoperative red cell salvage has proven to be a highly effective blood conservation strategy, as it can reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusion. However, the use of cell saver alone is not sufficient. Without specific blood ordering guidelines, the amount of allogeneic blood product requested and cross&ndash;matched is often much greater than the real level of consumption. Efficient blood ordering guidelines have been developed in the past, and have succeeded in providing a more accurate prediction of actu

Introduction: The technological development of the last 20 years pledges the intensity of efforts for implementing novel imaging contactless modalities that accelerate the translation from the research bench to the patient bedside, especially in the cardiac field. In this work, a novel intraoperative cardiac imaging approach, named Video Kinematic Evaluation (Vi.Ki.E.), is presented and explained in detail. This technology is able to monitor, contactless, the cardiac mechanics and deformation in-situ during heart surgery. Cardiac kinematics have been deeply evaluated ranging from the experimen
