Abstract:
Aim. To investigate functional and semantic aspects of the hierarchy of titles in the story of the Volgograd fiction writer E. Yu. Lukin “We will be cured” (2008).Methodology. The question is raised about the need to study the hierarchy of titles in a literary text. Based on the material of E. Y. Lukin’s text, the hierarchy of titles is analyzed, in particular, the functions of internal headings and intra-textual biblionyms, their connections with the key anthroponym Artem. The main research methods are: 1) descriptive and analytical, represented by a set of the following techniques: observation, comparison, generalization; commenting and interpretation of the analyzed material; 2) aspectual, represented by functional, contextual and intertextual analysis.Results. The author proposes a formal scheme of the hierarchy of title elements in a literary text. According to the author, the hierarchy is formed by the pre-text biblionym, intratext biblionym, and internal title (the name of the structural part of the work: volume, part, chapter, act). The functions of intratext biblionyms and internal titles in the story are revealed: comic, plot-forming, characterological, allusive, text-forming, manipulative.Research implications. The study clarifies the idea of the functioning of biblionyms in the literary text, develops the theory of the title.

Abstract:
Tacitus' Dialogus de oratoribus (c. 100 c.e.) may be the most perplexing of the extant Roman dialogues, quite possibly, of the entire Greco-Roman tradition. Despite advances in the rhetorical and literary appreciation of ancient dialogues, this text continues to elude understanding. Oddly, the difficulties stem neither from obscurities of subject matter and presentation nor from any anomalism vis-à-vis the norms of the genre. Six compelling speeches lucidly detail the value, history and development of eloquentia (‘skilled speech’) from the perspective of the late first and early second centuries c.e. They provide convincing accounts of rhetoric and its evolution: the social and political efficacy of eloquentia (Marcus Aper's and Curiatius Maternus' prescriptions on how best to assert oneself with and against the powerful, and the famous yet notoriously tumultuous oratory of the Late Republic), evaluative categories for rhetoric, including the competing discourses that prized renown and canonical status (Vipstanus Messalla's praise of the ancients), or external and absolute aesthetic criteria; and lastly, exemplary instances (e.g. past luminaries) or suitable models for imitation (ancient and modern orators and poets). The richness of these diverse emphases, along with the complex and ambiguous reworking of literary forerunners, not to mention the open-endedness at the work's conclusion, all conspire against the expectation of a uniform message.

Abstract:
This article tackles the question of media discourse circulation in the light of dialogism. Yet, analysing empirical data forces one to reformulate the enunciative dialogical frame proposed by Bakhtine and to connect it to the interdiscourse and interdiscursive memory notions, stemming from the French discourse analysis school. Some media specific discursive modes are uncovered, such as multi-voiced intertext constructions, memory-laden allusions, the interdiscursive characteristic of nomination, or the diverse functions of the various forms of dialogism at work in the text pragmatic orientation (the intratext).

Abstract:
TheIliadandOdysseyare replete with single speeches or exchanges of speech which are described by the noun νεῖκος (‘quarrel’, ‘strife’) or its derived verb νεικέω. Some time ago, A.W.H. Adkins showed that νεῖκος and νεικείω are used in Homer to designate various kinds of agonistic discourse: threats, rebukes, insults, quarrels and judicial disputes. Critics often now describe νεῖκος-speeches and νεῖκος-exchanges in theIliadas examples of ‘flyting’. This term, shared by the languages of Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse and the dialect of Old Scots, is transferred to the combination of boasting, invective and threats which Homeric heroes hurl at each other. This is because Iliadic νεῖκος has affinities with the traditional and highly stylised verbal exchanges which take place in the feasting halls and battles depicted in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Germanic heroic poetry. In his bookThe Language of HeroesRichard Martin has argued persuasively that the flyting νεῖκος is a significant speech-act genre performed by Homeric characters and that its competitive mode is analogous to the Homeric poet's poetic projecttout court. Just as Homer produces a monumental epic whose focus on Achilles may well be competitive with other renderings of epic tradition and is certainly derived through the manipulation of memory, Homeric heroes and gods flyte by manipulating and contesting the resources of memory. The best Homeric flyting is creatively poetic within existing conventions or strategies and is thereby rhetorically devastating. And Martin sees Achilles as the best flyter because he rhetorically manipulates memory better than any other hero. Thus, the hero is like his poet and the poet is like his hero. Achilles' competitive way with words is unique in (and to) theIliadand is emblematic of Homer's overpowering competitive poetic achievement.

Abstract:
In this article the poem “Sitate per pos” by Lina Spies is decoded according to semiotic premises, inter aha Peirce’s triad of icon, symbol and index. The following relations are examined: the symbol-object relation according to findings of Van Zoest; the index-object relation where indexes respectively referring to external reality, intertextuality and the intratext itself are differentiated; the icon-object relation based on Peirce’s assertion that iconicity is founded on a likeness relation and Eco’s view that iconicity can also be based on observation and convention. The decoding process indicates that informative iconicity takes precedence. Iconicity lends semantic validity to sounds within the context of the poem. Siegel’s exposition of syntactic iconicity is applied on poetic syntactic patterns and ungrammaticality. Signs on a higher level of semantic signification are examined in terms of metaphoric iconicities. The investigation demonstrates that a metaphoric icon can also fulfil the function of a lexical interpretant due to the simultaneous generation of intra- and intertexts. The informative power of material icons and super icons within the structural coherence of the poem is highlighted.

Abstract:
An issue of the subject in contemporary lyrics is widely discussed at the present time, being one of the most relevant in the research of contemporary poetry. One of the issues is the relevance of the term lyrical hero in relation to contemporary poetry, which, following the analyticism path, departs from the actual lyrical utterance. The article expresses an opinion that the idea of a lyrical hero remains relevant in the study of song poetry, in particular rock poetry of the 1980s – 1990s. Based on the classic article by Yu.N. Tynyanov «Block», in which an attempt is made for the first time to qualify the definition under discussion, the article analyzes the work of Russian rock poets, proves the presence of the lyrical hero in the lyrics of K. Kinchev and Yu. Shevchuk. Also, the conclusion is made about the lyrical hero specifics in classical Russian rock poetry. It is connected not only with intratext factors, such as the presence of the self-subject, the possibility for a rock poet of constructing a single plot of the hypertext, which includes biographical motives, but also extratext factors of the existence of a synthetic rock text, including the presence of the image of a lyrical hero in the socio-cultural sphere, the creation of a media image, the formation of a stage image.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to show how humour is involved in creating effective media communication. The research method is a stylistic analysis of the media text through establishing the manifestations of humour in its compositional components – paratext, metatext, and intratext. The paper reveals the manifestations of two types of irony – ridicule and banter – in these text components. It is established that banter is a means to demonstrate the event distantly, to reduce unnecessary pathos in the speech of top public officials, and to emphasize public contradictions indirectly. Language markers of banter are most often found in the metatext. In such forms of irony, veiled references and hints are expressed which require an additional cognitive effort to understand. The feelings that motivate irony are hidden behind a mask, and are the opposite of the implied ones expressed in the text: for example, indignation is hidden behind surprise and bewilderment. Banter is typical of business mass media, where every event is transmitted distantly. Ridicule is characteristic of sociopolitical mass media. It is expressed in the conflict charge of the media text – the desire to discredit the object of speech, and often acts as a means of transmitting alienation, demonstrating categorical opposition of one’s position to another’s. Ridicule is created by the saturation of negative-evaluative means, most often manifested in the expression of anger and indignation, which determine ridicule. The text markers of tonality, evaluation and degree of indirect expression form the basis of reading the modality character – i.e. badinage.

Abstract:
The article presents a fragment of research on univerbation in its relation to text integrity. The study is fulfilled on the material of the modern German language. Univerbation is considered as formation of root compounds and synthetic compounds. The study material includes 120 word-formation contexts selected from modern German press, fiction and legislative acts of the FRG taken from criminal, civil and public codes. The article focuses on the problem of cataphoric univerbation widely spread in press texts and law acts. The highest frequency of compounds with cataphorically oriented intratext links is detected in newspaper and journal headlines and titles of law articles. From pragmatic point of view polylexemic univerbs function in the titles of law articles as terminological condensates and as segmentation markers of the whole law text. In press headlines one of the main reasons of univerb creation and its use is compacting. The pragmatic focus on compacting is successfully manifested also in the titles of law articles. However, in contrast to press it has not a coherent, but a strongly marked cohesive nature. Showy, memorable, unusual headline univerbs can also stimulate the interest to read the main text. The existence of subheading or overheading alongside with the main headline is typical of some newspaper and journal articles. Due to this fact the content- and information-related support among univerbs is provided. In speech reality a high degree of language economy in the univerb structure results in lexical redundancy which is to guarantee the correct decoding of the condensate’s semantics.

Abstract:
The profile of African urban history has risen considerably of late, with the appearance of a number of important monographs and edited collections. What is more, with the plethora of younger scholars as well as more established historians now exploring Africa's urban pasts, its profile is set to rise further. African Urban Spaces in Historical Perspective represents the latest contribution to this emerging sub-field. A companion volume, Urbanization and African Cultures, is of a more interdisciplinary character. Both are drawn from contributions to a 2003 University of Texas conference.African Urban Spaces will be of more interest to readers of this journal, not only because of its historical focus but also its higher quality and greater cohesion. It covers an impressive geographical and temporal range, with chapters on primary and secondary cities throughout Africa, spanning the precolonial past to the present. It is introduced by one of the pioneers of Africa's urban history, Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch, who teases themes from the collection and signals promising avenues for future research. However, poor referencing mars the introduction, a symptom of the apparently loose editorial role exercised over the book as a whole. Greater intervention could have strengthened the collection considerably: not only to ensure consistent referencing (authors variously adopt endnotes and social science/intratext systems) and to minimize typographical errors, but more seriously to tighten the sloppier passages and chapters. The quality of the chapters varies considerably, some representing useful scholarly contributions, others being pedestrian accounts offering little or nothing new.

Abstract:
Linguistic creativity is analyzed as a feature of the microblog paratext in the Telegram messenger. For the media linguistics research, the most important paratext components of publications in Telegram channels were selected, namely: nickname and slogan, which, combining many posts into integrity, are aimed at establishing contact, identifying, informing, advertising and highlighting the channel among others. It was found out that due to the specifics of the technological conditions of speech interaction in Telegram, these paratext components become zones of speech creativity of telegramers and undergo polyparametric language transformations. Linguistic innovations in naming and sloganistics of three thematically diverse groups of Telegram channels — about politics, science and entertainment — are considered. As a result, linguocreative techniques were established in the channel’s paratext, the role of discourse createms in the process of participants’ communicative adaptation to new technological conditions was revealed. Linguocreative techniques in the channels naming consist in the use of specific word-formation, lexical and syntactic resources of the language, which are adapted to the needs of politically, scientifically or entertainment-oriented communication. Linguistic innovation in sloganistics is determined by the desire to draw attention to the channel as a whole and to its individual messages, which forces the participants of telegram communication to mobilize such means of linguistic creativity that update the repertoire of linguistic means for naming speech activity. The research of linguocreativity in the Telegram channel paratext opens up broad prospects for the study of linguistic innovations in the metatext and intratext components of the media text created in new technological conditions.

Abstract:
The article deals with the geographical component of the chronotope of the English scientific discourse. The authors identify the forms of geographical representation of the chronotope of scientific discourse, determine the degree of identifiability of these forms, and also explore the significance of the geographical component of the chronotope in the categorization of scientific discourse. 112 English scientific articles from 4 disciplinary areas (linguistics, literature, economics, biology) published in scientific periodicals are used as practical material. In the course of the study, the authors discover three types of geographical markers used in the texts of scientific discourse: the topos of publishing a scientific work, the topos of writing a scientific work, and the topos of the object, subject and material of the study (intratext topos). The authors analyze the degree of identification of each type of markers in scientific texts, and also conduct a comparative analysis of these markers. The level of coincidence of the topos of the publication, the topos of writing and the topos of the object of study is investigated. As a result of the analysis, the authors observe a low level of interdependence of geographical markers, which suggests that the geographical component of the chronotope is of little importance for the categorization of a scientific text. On the basis of the data obtained, the authors believe that the geographical markers of a scientific text should be perceived as elements of the formal and technical design of a scientific text, and not as its constituent characteristic. In conclusion, the authors give a number of directions for further considering the constituent topos in the chronotope of scientific discourse, in particular, its disciplinary and thematic component.

This research take on focus the Speaking ability on producing sentences with schedule text as the basic material on first semester students on hospitality program. Research showed that effort to improve students’ speaking skill which is based on productivity can be used schedule text as the trigger. The steps can be divided into 3 such as introducing relevant vocabulary where vocabulary showed in matching column in similar number, inserting small text which support the topic and the core activity is producing sentences. The sentences produced are classified into 3 groups according to how tight the dependency to the text provided. The research found out that (a) all students produce minimal 5 sentences and even far more. No students left in achieve this type of sentences. The sentences are produces by linked information on a certain line. (b) A number of students faced it difficult to produce sentences type 2 since it needs more focus in comparing data from the schedule text. Only 85% student got it easy while the others need more time to produce one. The sentences here produced by doing comparison or linking between lines information. (c) For group 3 where sentences need knowledge background to support it is achieved by 55% students. Here, sentences produced by implementing intratext which means another text must be there so the sentences become larger or deeper than the data on schedule text itself. It seemed that not each student has enough knowledge about airlines or small text which is provided before the core activity is neglected. Lack of knowledge or effort made it difficult for some students, but still very essay for others. They can produce many sentences in this group in a minute. From the results, it is suggested for students to do reading activity on interesting topic or article supporting the learning process.

Falkner, Thomas M. "Containing Tragedy: Rhetoric and Self-Representation in Sophocles' "Philoctetes"." Classical Antiquity 17, no. 1 (1998): 25–58. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/25011073.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay examines "Philoctetes" as an exercise in self-representation by looking at the self-referential and metatheatrical dimensions of the play. After suggesting an enlarged understanding of metatheater as "a particularly vigorous attempt to engage the audience at the synthetic and thematic levels of reading," I examine "Philoctetes" as a self-conscious discourse on tragedy, tragic production, and tragic experience, one which participates in a larger conversation in the late fifth century about the ethics of tragedy, including the remarks of Gorgias on theatrical deception (ἀπάτη). The play points up its own constructedness in a variety of ways, most strikingly in the theatrical character of the intrigue by which Odysseus deceives Philoctetes, which provides a play within a play and a representation of texts and readers, plays and spectators. In laying bare the kinds of strategies and techniques that undergird this "intratext," "Philoctetes" offers a model of tragedy and of the tragic poet based on power, deceit, and manipulation. Yet by attributing these characteristics to the moral deficiencies of its internal creator and by demonstrating his failure to achieve his ends, "Philoctetes" rejects such a theater of sophistry. At the same time, the play considers issues of textual reception by providing in Philoctetes an audience for this internal text and a protocol of reading that suggest a more positive model of tragic response. "Philoctetes" uses this model to offer the spectator a subject position that affirms the inherent value of reading tragedy, a humanistic model of reading based upon the audience's identification with and sympathy for the tragic protagonist. Sophocles thus finds in this exercise in self-representation a way to frame critical questions on dramatic theory and to define his own dramatic practice.

Objectives. The measurement of mucociliary transport velocity by rhinoscintigraphy with Tc-99m-macroaggregated albumin (99mTc-MAA) is reliable measure of mucociliary clearance. The aim of this study is to assess the intratest, interobserver, and intraobserver reproducibility of nasal mucociliary transport rate (NMTR) measurement.Materials and Methods.Twenty-two subjects were evaluated to determine intratest reproducibility and a group of 35 subjects was examined to determine inter- and intraobserver reproducibility. Rhinoscintigraphy with99mTc-MAA was used to measure NMTR in all study subjects. Paired NMTR measurements were compared using a range of statistical methodologies. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and repeatability coefficients and Bland-Altman plots were applied to assess the degree of intratest, interobserver, and intraobserver variation.Results.Statistical analysis of test and retest experiments demonstrated the statistical equivalence of intratest NMTR measurements, interobserver NMTR measurements, and intraobserver NMTR measurements. The intratest ICC, interobserver ICC, and intraobserver ICC were 0.96, 0.83, and 0.91, respectively, indicating that intratest and intraobserver reproducibility are excellent and interobserver reproducibility is good.Conclusions.Rhinoscintigraphy using99mTc-MAA results in highly reproducible measurement of NMTR. The use of radionuclide imaging in measuring NMTR results in excellent intratest and intraobserver reproducibility and good interobserver reliability.

Abstract:
To assess the utility and precision of GFR measurements in multicenter trials, the test performance and variability of GFR were analyzed in 2,250 patients enrolled in 44 clinical centers participating in either the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study or the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). GRF was measured as the renal clearance of [125I]iothalamate after an sc injection without epinephrine. The studies used similar protocols for obtaining blood and urine, training clinical center staff, and processing specimens in central laboratories. The performance of GFR measurements, assessed from adherence to protocol and quality control analyses, was excellent. The variability among the four clearance periods (intratest coefficient of variation [CV]) was acceptable; the median intratest CV for GFR was 9.4% in the MDRD Study and 11.7% in the DCCT. The pattern of decline in serum counts was better approximated by an exponential rather than a linear relationship. The cause of the intratest variability in GFR measurements was explored by univariate and multivariate analysis. The intratest CV was highest at the extremes of GFR. Among patients with a high GFR (> 90 mL/min per 1.73 m2), most of whom were participants in the DCCT, the higher intratest GFR was due, in part, to a systematic decline in GFR during the test. Among patients with a very low GFR (< 13 mL/min per 1.73 m2), technical difficulties in urine collections contributed substantially to the higher intratest CV. Other patient characteristics, including age, gender, weight, serum glucose, renal diagnosis, and use of diuretics, were not strongly correlated with the intratest CV. The precision of GFR measurements was assessed from the variability from measurement to measurement (interest CV). Among MDRD Study subjects, in whom two measurements of GFR were performed over a 3-month interval, the median interest CV was relatively low (6.3%) and was only weakly related to the intratest CV. Thus, GFR measurements are reasonably precise, even if the intratest CV is high. Given the relatively high intratest CV that is characteristic of GFR measurements, the estimate of GFR in an individual is more precise if multiple clearance periods, rather than a single period, are included. Similarly, the estimate of mean GFR for a population is also more precise if multiple clearance periods are included. In conclusion, by the use of standardized methods, an acceptable precision of GFR results can be obtained in multicenter trials. The same methods can be applied in clinical practice.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:
Competition is a common phenomenon and occurs frequently in sports. In high performance sports, competition takes place not only between teams (interteam competition) but also within a team (intrateam competition). In the intrateam competition, coaches might play a central role because of their power to structure competition within their teams. Yet, there is a lack of research exploring how coaches facilitate this type of competition. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to explore how university-level team sport coaches’ experience, structure and use intrateam competition. Eight full-time Canadian Interuniversity Sports head coaches participated in semistructured interviews. The participants indicated that intrateam competition involves two distinct types of competition: situational and positional competition. While situational competition occurs primarily in practices, positional competition is an ongoing, continual process in which athletes who occupy the same position compete for playing time. The coaches shared important considerations about how to carefully structure and use both types of competition constructively. The study is an original account of intrateam competition as a multifaceted, constructive process within high performance sport teams.

This research note presents the results of a content analysis of the Columbia Mental Maturity Scale and the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence (TONI). We also compared the intratest performance of a selected sample of language-impaired (LI) and MA-matched normal language children on these two tests. These analyses are an extension of Johnston’s (1982) report on the Leiter. The content analysis revealed differences in the nature of perceptual and conceptual items on the Columbia and the TONI. Consistent with Johnston’s findings, the intratest comparisons revealed no significant group differences. LI and normal-language children performed significantly better on the perceptual-type items than the conceptual-type items. The predominance of perceptual items was particularly evident in the TONI.

Abstract:
This study investigates the mechanisms underlying the relationship between intrateam learning behaviors and team performance in student project teams in terms of contribution conflict as an antecedent of the team shared mental model on team tasks. The data collected from a sample of 201 Romanian student teams show that only team shared mental model on team tasks totally mediates the relationship between intrateam learning behaviors and team performance. Moreover, contribution conflict and team shared mental model on team tasks taken together fully mediate the relationship between intrateam learning behaviors and team performance. We conclude our study by suggesting future research on the main topic of team learning and team effectiveness.

Abstract:
Issues related to sexuality, sexual orientation, and romantic relationships have received attention in the sport psychology literature. An area that has not been addressed, however, is that of romantic relationships among sport teammates. Such intrateam romantic relationships may have certain benefits but can also be disruptive to teams and team functioning. The purpose of this manuscript is to (a) address issues related to intrateam romantic relationships, and (b) to propose strategies for sport psychology consultants to consider and use when working with teams when intrateam romantic relationships develop. Specifically, sport psychology consultants who encounter intrateam romantic relationships may find it valuable to consider family system models as a theoretical framework for intervention, clearly identify the client, determine the willingness of those involved to consult, and assess their own abilities to effectively intervene and to receive supervision for such interventions. A well-defined, credible approach may help sport psychology consultants to succeed in complex circumstances and gain the trust, respect, and cooperation of the coaches, teams, and athletes with whom they work.

Abstract:
Although it is assumed that athletes need to consider the member-to-member interactions that take place within a team before drawing an accurate perception about the team’s level of cohesion, little research to date has addressed this assumption. The purpose of this study was to examine the intrateam communication and cohesion relationship to determine which types of communication would be associated with perceived task and social cohesiveness in a sample of youth athletes. Youth soccer players ( N = 139, k = 13) completed measures of intrateam communication and task and social cohesion halfway through a competitive season. Separate multilevel analyses were run predicting task and social cohesion. For task cohesion, acceptance, positive conflict, and negative conflict communication emerged as significant predictors, p < .001, accounting for 40% of the total variance. For social cohesion, distinctiveness, positive conflict, and negative conflict communication were significant predictors, p < .001, accounting for 27% of the total variance. Findings provide initial evidence establishing a link between intrateam communication and cohesion in the youth sport context but more importantly suggest both similarities and differences with respect to the specific types of intrateam communication that are associated with task and social cohesion.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a tool for the classification of domain-specific intraterm relations. It thus aims to present both the process and the product of classifying these relations. First, a description is given of how semantic relations and — more specifically — intraterm relations are understood and represented. Then, a structured set of relational schemas is presented, based mainly on insights from cognitive semantics and functional linguistics. Finally, the general model is applied to the semantic classification of complex terms. This step is specific in several ways: in the type of relation (internal semantic relations of complex terms), in the subject field (ceramic tile manufacturing) and in the languages analysed (German and Spanish). The advantage of this procedure is that, if applied to different subject fields, the resulting classifications can reach a high degree of specificity, but they are nonetheless comparable due to the fact that they will be based on a common theoretical background and methodology of classification.

Abstract:
This research aimed to (a) determine whether mastery and intrateam performance achievement goals predicted prosocial and antisocial teammate behavior, (b) explore whether effects of intrateam performance goals were mediated by moral disengagement, and (c) examine whether any effects (Study 2 only) were moderated by cohesion. In Study 1, team athletes (N = 282) from Australia completed questionnaires assessing the aforementioned variables. Structural equation modeling indicated that prosocial teammate behavior was positively predicted by mastery-approach goals, and negatively predicted by mastery- and intrateam performance-avoidance goals, whereas antisocial teammate behavior was positively predicted by intrateam performance-approach and -avoidance goals; these latter effects were mediated by moral disengagement. In Study 2, team athletes (N = 452) from the United Kingdom completed a measure of cohesion in addition to the Study 1 instruments; the analyses largely confirmed the Study 1 findings. However, the undesirable effect of mastery-avoidance goals on prosocial behavior seen in Study 1 was only apparent in Study 2 when individuals held strong perceptions of team cohesion. In sum, this investigation makes a novel contribution to the literature on team functioning in sport, being the first to explore how athletes’ normative goals relative to their teammates might shape effective interaction processes.

The comprehensiveness of the literary work is produced only in the social context. Over time various methods / perspectives have profiled on the text, who were interested distinctly of this aspect the most recent being socio-criticism. Its stake consists in the analysis of the modalities through which society is reflected in textual structures. In contrast to the sociology of literature, socio-criticism puts up for text review at all levels: semantic, syntactic, narrative. The difficulty of defining this discipline was conditioned by the interpretations given to it in several schools (Vincennes, Montpellier, Montréal), which varied from the approaches to linguistics to those that go beyond the literary specifics. Although it faces some difficulties in defining the subject matter and the work area, the socio-criticism proves its viability and affirms itself as a new method and a new perspective on the text along with the other known ones.

Abstract:
Performance excellence is a core value in athletic teams. A team’s intraorganizational network has been considered an important determinant of team performance. However, the role of sport-team captains is often overlooked in lieu of the coaching staff. The purpose of this case study was to explore the relationship between team captains’ intrateam ego network and team-performance indicators. The researchers video recorded the intrateam communication of 4 college football-team captains over the course of 9 practices and collected secondary data pertaining to team performance. Analysis of the coded interactions revealed significant positive relationships between captains’ ego network and the previous week’s team performance, with a nonsignificant correlation with the subsequent week’s team performance. Analysis exploring the relationships between captains’ ego network and other team-performance indicators provides some support for the impact of intrateam communication on team performance. Implications for coaches and future directions for research are presented.

The objective of this study is to examine the importance of power, intrateam conflict, conflict contagion and its impact on organizational performance. This study has used past literature to extend work on power, intrateam conflict, conflict contagion and its impact on performance by providing prepositions. The study demonstrates the importance of power and its impact on intrateam conflicts, which form the shape of conflict contagion and ultimately affect performance. Study found that power leads to more conflicts and its process of spreading hastens because of its contagious nature negatively influences the team’s performance. The paper has highlighted the untapped element of power and creates a bridge between power, conflict and its impact on organizational performance. Many researchers have focused separately on power, teamwork and conflict. However, still, there is a need to assess whether individual power interests also takes the form of conflict contagion, which might affect performance of the organization.

Abstract:
Social identity has been found to play a salient role in regulating teammate behavior among youth participating in a range of sports (Bruner, Boardley, & Côté, 2014). This study aimed to better understand social identity by examining how it may influence intrateam moral behavior specifically in competitive youth ice hockey. Thirty-six male and female competitive youth ice hockey players from nine teams participated in narrative interviews. Using a thematic narrative analysis, three distinct narratives were identified: (1) family-oriented team narrative, (2) performance-oriented team narrative, and (3) dominance-oriented team narrative. Within each of the narratives, a reciprocal relationship between social identity and intrateam moral behavior was reported such that young athletes’ social identities developed through team membership may influence and be influenced by their moral behavior toward teammates. Collectively, the results extend previous research by providing an in-depth qualitative understanding of social identity and intrateam moral behavior in youth sport.

Drawing on a social network analysis, we examined the role of social network structure (i.e., friendship network density) as a mediating factor linking team average emotional intelligence (EI) with team task performance and how this relationship is influenced by intrateam trust. The results from 97 teams (466 team members) working on student projects in a business university over a semester indicated that teams with higher average EI exhibit a higher density of friendship networks and better team task performance in contexts characterized by higher intrateam trust. The study increases our understanding of the mechanism through which EI at the team level may affect team performance and provides new insights into how team managers and members might enhance the effectiveness of project teams.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Auditory-evoked potentials (EPs) provide a more objective assessment of central auditory nervous system (CANS) dysfunction when compared to behavioral measures because they do not require a behavioral response (Anderson and Kraus, 2010). In this regard, the middle latency response (MLR) has been considered an important component of CANS assessment (Jerger et al, 1988); however, its large within-group variability limits its usefulness (Musiek et al, 1999). It has been argued that performing intratest calculations on the MLR (e.g., difference in EP amplitude when stimulating the left ear versus the right ear) can reduce the within-group variability of the MLR and enhance its clinical usefulness (Musiek et al, 1999; Weihing et al, 2012). To date, it has not been investigated how well these MLR intratest measures reduce within-group variability in adults of various ages, nor has it been shown that these intratest measures are sensitive to aging-related changes in the CANS. Purpose: The two primary goals of the present study were (1) to determine if calculating an intratest MLR measure, the difference in MLR Na-Pa peak-to-peak amplitude on left versus right ear stimulation (i.e., “ear effects”), will reduce within-group variability in adults of various ages; and (2) to determine if ear effect magnitude will change as a function of aging. Ear effects were measured in both quiet and in noise to determine if the addition of noise enhanced any age-related-effects. Research Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Study Sample: The researchers studied 30 adults ranging in age from 20–80 yr with hearing sensitivity of 25 dB HL or better at the octave frequencies from 500–2000 Hz, and no history of neurologic issues. Adults were assigned to one of three age groups based on their chronological age, which were young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults. Data Collection and Analysis: MLRs were acquired using a Nicolet Spirit 2000 during a single laboratory visit. To determine if within-group variability decreased significantly with ear effects, variability for absolute amplitude measures was compared to ear effect variability using the Pitman t-test. To examine potential effects of background noise and aging, data were analyzed using a mixed-factorial analysis of variance with the within-subjects factor “background noise” and the between-subjects factor “age group.” Results: Within-group variability was significantly reduced by calculating ear effects for the youngest group only. Additionally, the oldest adults in the present sample showed significantly larger ear effects than younger and middle-aged adults. This effect did not appear to be a result of differences in peripheral hearing sensitivity. Finally, introducing noise into the paradigm did not influence the observed effects. Conclusions: Ear effects become larger in older adults possibly as a result of age-related changes in the subcortical and/or cortical generators of the MLR. Failure of the ear effect calculation to reduce within-group variability in the middle-aged and older adults suggests that interaural asymmetries in MLR amplitude become more variable across participants who are older than 50 yr. Information obtained from this measure may benefit the development of treatment plans for older adults with hearing difficulties.

Abstract:
This paper develops and examines a model of the antecedents and consequences of decision-making comprehensiveness during the new product development process. This model firstly suggests a concave relationship between intrateam task disagreement and decision-making comprehensiveness. It also conjectures that conflict communications influence the effectiveness of decision-making comprehensiveness on new product teams’ performance. An empirical test of the proposed framework involves a survey of 220 cross-functional new product teams. The findings show that an inverse U-shaped relationship exists between intrateam task disagreement and decision-making comprehensiveness. It also indicates that collaborative communication has a negative effect on innovativeness, whereas contentious communication adversely affects constraint adherence. However, decision-making comprehensiveness partially moderates the relationships between conflict communications and team performance. Some managerial and research implications of the findings were also discussed in this study.

AbstractTeam emotional intelligence is expected to have a significant impact on intrateam conflict and team effectiveness. However, to date, there has been a dearth of empirical evidence of this link. Taking a comprehensive approach, our study contributes to the literature on intrateam conflict and team emotional intelligence. Data collected from 79 teams in South Korean companies reveal that team emotional intelligence is negatively related to team process (i.e., task conflict and relationship conflict) and positively related to team effectiveness (i.e., team performance, innovation, and cohesion). In addition, team emotional intelligence has a moderating effect on decoupling task conflict and relationship conflict. Our findings also indicate that team emotional intelligence decreases the negative effects of task conflict on team effectiveness, and of relationship conflict on team cohesion. We conclude this study with a discussion of limitations and implications for future research.

Abstract:
This investigation examined the impact of a comprehensive psychological skills training for tennis (PSTT) program on collegiate tennis players. PSTT players were exposed to three psychological skills (goal setting, imagery, and arousal regulation) and then given the opportunity to develop individualized PSTT programs. Program effectiveness was evaluated through (a) case study analyses, (b) intrateam analyses comparing high- and low-commitment PSTT players, and (c) interteam analyses comparing PSTT (n = 12) and non-PSTT (n = 12) players. Results indicated that the PSTT program was successful, with case studies providing strong support for the effectiveness of individual PSTT programs. Additionally, intrateam results revealed that all PSTT players felt their PSTT program helped their tennis games, although high- and low-commitment players differed significantly on only 2 of 15 psychological and performance variables. As expected, interteam results demonstrated significant differences on only 2 of 15 variables, with PSTT players displaying higher state self-confidence and committing fewer double faults than did their non-PSTT counterparts.

Abstract:
Background The oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) is a newer ventilatory exercise parameter, used in the evaluation of healthy participants and patients with cardiovascular disease. However, few data about the reliability and reproducibility of OUES are available. Our study assessed intratest reliability and test-retest reproducibility of OUES in healthy participants. Design and methods Eighteen participants (age 28 ± 6 years, BMI 22.1 ± 1.9 kg/m2, 10 men) performed two identical maximal exercise tests on a bicycle ergometer. To assess test-retest reproducibility, we performed Bland-Altman analysis and calculated the coefficient of repeatability of the main ventilatory variables. Results OUES remained stable during the second part of the exercise test. Mean values varied 2.4 ± 4.0% between OUES calculated at 70% (OUES70) and at 100% of exercise duration. Mean variation decreased to 1.4 ± 2.3% when OUES was calculated at 90% of exercise duration (OUES90). The Bland-Altman 95% limits of agreement for OUES90 were +3 and –6%, those for OUES70 were +11 and –8%. The coefficient of repeatability for OUES was 597 ml/min or 18.7% of the average value of repeated OUES measurements. These results were similar to those of peak oxygen uptake and minute ventilation/carbon dioxide output. However, the test-retest reproducibility for submaximal-derived values of OUES was lower, as we noted higher coefficients of repeatability for OUES90 and OUES70, increasing up to 27% of the average of repeated values. Conclusion OUES shows excellent intratest reliability and has a test-retest reproducibility that is similar to that of peak oxygen uptake and minute ventilation/carbon dioxide output slope. However, its reproducibility becomes higher when it is calculated from increasing levels of achieved exercise intensity.

Abstract:
On the basis of Social Exchange Theory (SET), Knowledge Stickiness Theory (KST), and the need-to-belong hypotheses, we empirically studied the causes and consequences of workplace loneliness in interpersonal communication and explored the moderating effect of the need to belong. We distributed a survey and collected 639 valid responses in mainland China in both paper and electronic form during the period of February to October 2020, when the COVID-19 crisis was severe. Mplus was used to create a latent structural equation model with a moderating mediating model. Collaborative and competitive intrateam climates affect employees’ workplace loneliness and knowledge hoarding from different aspects. We also verified a moderated mediation model. Thus, this study examines the mediating effect of workplace loneliness and introduces the need to belong as the moderating variable; reveals the formation mechanism of workplace loneliness in collaborative and competitive intrateam climates; and deepens the research on the effective regulation of workplace loneliness. As the COVID-19 pandemic remains ongoing, we have verified changes to the mediating effect of workplace loneliness, driven by the motivation of the need to belong, and clearly evaluated a moderated mediating effect path, which contributes to the theory of belonging.

Abstract:
Sport psychologists believe that contemporary sport’s pervasive preoccupation with winning may actually be responsible for athletes’ anxiety, motivation, and self-confidence problems. Winning is a goal that lacks the flexibility and control necessary for athletes to (a) achieve consistent success and (b) take credit for success. Martens and Burton (1982) concluded that performance goals (PGs) based on attaining personal performance standards offer the flexibility and control needed to develop high perceived ability and performance. Thus the purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to evaluate whether a goal setting training (GST) program could teach athletes to set appropriate PGs, and (b) to assess the impact of the GST program on the perceived ability, competitive cognitions, and performance of collegiate swimmers. A collegiate swim team (N=30) participated in a season-long GST program, and program effects were systematically evaluated with a multimethod approach using interteam, intrateam, and case study data. Interteam and case study data generally supported both predictions. Intrateam analyses revealed that high-accuracy GST swimmers demonstrated more optimal cognitions and performance than low-accuracy teammates, suggesting that goal setting skill mediated GST effectiveness.

Abstract:
In studies on the progression of chronic renal failure the measurement of GFR must be very reliable. Sequential determination of GFR using the renal clearances of exogenous tracers such as inulin or iothalamate is the most accepted method. However, because of inaccuracies in urine collection, intratest variation, and thus intertest variation, of these clearances is considerable. This has a negative impact on the precision of long-term slope estimations. A previously described method of GFR determination on the basis of simultaneous infusion of 131I-hippuran and 125I-iothalamate corrects for inaccurate urine collection. To study whether this correction method improves the precision of the GFR slope measurement, this study analyzed longitudinal GFR data obtained in 71 patients with renal disease during a follow-up of 84 to 180 wk (477 renal function studies). All GFR were calculated by using both the standard renal clearance method and the correction method. The intratest and intertest coefficient of variation was significantly smaller for the correction method compared with the standard method (1.93 +/- 0.20 versus 8.48 +/- 1.66% P < 0.0005; and 2.88 +/- 0.32 versus 5.12 +/- 0.66%, P < 0.005, respectively). As a result, the precision of the GFR slope estimation was significantly better with the correction method compared with the standard method (error of the slope, 1.63 +/- 1.09 versus 2.35 +/- 2.36 mL/min per yr, P < 0.01). This improvement in precision of the slope by using the correction method reduces the necessary sample size needed to detect a GFR slope difference between interventions to about 30% of that needed when using the standard method. It is concluded that the precision of GFR measurements is improved by using correction for inaccurate urine collection with concomitant 131I-hippuran clearance.
