Abstrak: Universitas yang dipercaya oleh masyarakat harus memiliki tanggung jawab moral terhadap etika dan perilaku mahasiswa yang lulus. Sebagai bagian dari tanggung jawabnya kepada masyarakat, universitas harus memiliki tata kelola yang baik dan menghasilkan lulusan yang berkualitas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji hubungan good university governance yang diproksi dengan nilai akreditasi dengan tingkat religiusitas mahasiswa baik religiusitas intrinsik maupun ekstrinsik. Penelitian ini menggunakan 123 sampel dari mahasiswa aktif jurusan Akuntansi yang memiliki akreditasi A dan B. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif dengan purposive sampling sebagai teknik pengambilan sampel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan tingkat religiusitas berdasarkan tata kelola universitas yang baik. Semakin baik manajemen pendidikan tinggi, semakin tinggi religiositas siswa. Penelitian ini mengimplikasikan bahwa perguruan tinggi tidak hanya menghasilkan lulusan yang memiliki kecerdasan tinggi tetapi juga lulusan yang memiliki religiusitas yang baik. Kata kunci: tata kelola universitas, religiusitas intrinsik, religiusitas ekstrinsik, akreditasi. Abstract: The University that is trusted by the community should have a moral responsibility on students ethics and behavior who are graduated. As part of its responsibility to the community, universities must have good governance and produce quality graduates. This study aims to examine the relationship of good university governance that is proxied by the value of accreditation with the level of student religiosity both intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity. This study uses 123 samples from active students majoring in Accounting who have accreditation A and B. This research is a quantitative study with purposive sampling as a sampling technique. The results of the study show that there are differences in the level of religiosity based on good university governance. The better management of higher education, the higher the religiosity of students. This research implies that universities should not only produce graduates who have high intelligence but also graduates who have good religiosity. Keywords: good university governance, intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, accreditation.

Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to examine predictors of death anxiety in U.S. funeral directors/embalmers who were part of a larger study ( n = 234). Backward stepwise multiple regression was conducted to determine whether or not spirituality, intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, and denial predicted levels of death anxiety. Results indicated that spirituality along with age of the participants accounted for 19% of the variance of death anxiety, R2 = .190, R2adj = .180, F(2, 168) = 19.64, p < .001. Intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, and denial were not significant in the regression model. Several items, however, in the model had a significant positive correlation with each other at the .01 alpha level including spirituality with intrinsic religiosity ( r = .63) and age ( r = .21), and intrinsic religiosity with denial ( r = .22) and age ( r = .24). Other variables correlated negatively with one another at the .01 alpha level. Namely, death anxiety with spirituality (–.38), intrinsic religiosity ( r = –.36), and age (–.28); spirituality with extrinsic religiosity (–.22); intrinsic religiosity with extrinsic religiosity (–.45); and extrinsic religiosity with age ( r = –.19). Limitations of the study and implications for practice were discussed.

The present study tested the convergent validity of the Francis Scale of Attitude towards Christianity with measures of intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity. For 154 undergraduate students scores on Francis' scale were significantly associated .40 with scores on Intrinsic religiosity but not with scores on Personally Oriented Extrinsic religiosity ( r = .11) or Socially Oriented Extrinsic religiosity ( r = .05). These data suggest that the Francis scale might be viewed as a measure of intrinsic but not extrinsic religiosity.

Abstract — A lot of individuals have lived their lives with a strong attachment towards religion; however some of them still have a high aggressive behavior. This phenomenon is also evident in the youth communities within the church. The core teaching of the Christianity is love, in which love is supposed to inhibit individuals to initiate aggressive behavior. This study aims to explore the correlation between religiosity, which has two components (intrinsic religiosity orientation and extrinsic religiosity orientation), towards aggressive behavior in youth communities within the church. This study used quantitative method. To obtain and collect the data, we used the aid of questionnaire distributed through purposive technique towards 87 subjects. The instruments included the Verbal Aggressive Scale for the aggressive behavior, the I/E-R Scales to measure religious orientation, and Faith Development Scale to measure the development of faith in each individual. The result of this research pointed out that there is no significant correlation between intrinsic religious orientation and aggressive behavior and that is a positive correlation between extrinsic religious orientation and aggressive behavior. Abstrak — Banyak individu yang memiliki hidup dengan keterkaitan yang erat dengan agama, namun di sisi lain perilaku agresivitas mereka tetap tinggi. Fenomena ini juga terjadi dalam komunitas pemuda gereja. Inti dari ajaran agama Kristen adalah kasih, di mana idealnya kasih tersebut menahan individu untuk tidak melakukan perilaku agresif. Untuk menjelaskan fenomena ini, dilakukan penelitian mengenai hubungan antara religiositas, yang di dalamnya terdiri dari orientasi religiositas intrinsik dan ekstrinsik, dengan agresivitas pada pemuda gereja. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan kuesioner di mana sampel diambil dengan teknik purposive sampling kepada 87 responden. Alat ukur yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Verbal Aggressiveness Scale untuk mengukur agresivitas, I/E-R Scales untuk mengukur orientasi religiositas, dan Faith Developmental Scale untuk mengukur perkembangan iman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tidak adanya korelasi yang signifikan antara religiositas intrinsik dengan agresivitas, namun terdapatnya korelasi positif antara religiositas ekstrinsik dengan agresivitas.

Abstract:

This study sought to establish the conceptual relationship between intrinsic religiosity and spirituality by evaluating their capacity to mediate one another. Analysis was done using a cross-sectional data provided by university students (N = 333) from the Limpopo Province, South Africa. SEM analysis was used to test two hypothesised mediation models: 1) in which intrinsic religiosity was hypothesized to influence health risk behaviours in paths mediated by spirituality (religious well-being and existential well-being), and 2) in which spirituality (religious well-being and existential wellbeing) was hypothesized to influence health risk behaviours in paths mediated by intrinsic religiosity. Intrinsic religiosity failed to mediate the association between health risk behaviours and spirituality, and spirituality also failed to mediate the association between intrinsic religiosity and health risk behaviours. Nevertheless, there were direct relations between the religiosity/spirituality variables and most of the health risk behaviours measured in this study. Results showed that intrinsic religiosity and spirituality dimensions are independent constructs in this particular sample, since they failed to mediate each other. Our results support the putative bifurcation of the two constructs in the literature and findings of distinct independent roles they have on health.

Although there has been little research examining religiosity in athletes, recent evidence suggests that it may play an important role in the lives of some athletes. The present study investigated the relationship of intrinsic religiosity to substance use in intercollegiate athletes. The Intrinsic Religiosity subscale of the Duke Religion Index, the Alcohol Problems subscale of the Personality Assessment Inventory, and two questions assessing marijuana and other drug use were completed by 105 varsity athletes. Findings indicated that intrinsic religiosity was inversely associated with alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use. Implications of these findings for sport practitioners are discussed.

This study examines the roles of intrinsic religiosity, quest religiosity and personal moral philosophies (idealism and relativism) as predictors of consumers’ ethical beliefs. An online survey was conducted with 500 US consumers to identify these relationships. The results indicate that intrinsic religiosity and quest religiosity lead to negative beliefs regarding unethical consumer actions (actively benefiting from illegal actions, passively benefiting from the mistakes of the seller and actively benefiting from legal but questionable actions) and positive beliefs regarding pro-social actions mediated through idealism. Quest religiosity also leads to positive beliefs regarding unethical consumer actions (passively benefiting from the mistakes of the seller) mediated through relativism. Supplementing these indirect effects, intrinsic religiosity and quest religiosity have direct influences on some, but not all, dimensions of consumer ethics. Considering the mediating roles of idealism and relativism in relation to the effects of religiosity on consumer ethics, policies and practices that enhance idealism and reduce relativism should be supported to encourage ethical consumption.

Abstract:

Objective This study evaluated religiosity and its association with mental health, quality of life, and the intensity of pelvic pain in women with chronic pelvic pain. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 women with chronic pelvic pain. Religiosity was investigated using the Duke University Religion Index. Quality of life was evaluated using the abbreviated version of the World Health Organization’s quality of life instrument. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, while pain intensity was evaluated using a visual analog scale. Results Almost half the participants attended religious services at least once a week and 62% prayed, meditated, or studied the Bible at least once a day. There was no association between religiosity and anxiety or depression. The intrinsic religiosity score was lower for women with mixed anxiety-depressive disorder compared to those without mixed anxiety-depressive disorder. There was a positive association between intrinsic religiosity and the psychological health domain of the quality of life instrument. There was no association between religiosity and pain intensity. Conclusions Women with chronic pelvic pain were strongly religious. Women with mixed anxiety-depressive disorder had lower levels of intrinsic religiosity. On the other hand, intrinsic religiosity was positively associated with quality of life in women with chronic pelvic pain. Religiosity was not associated with the intensity of pelvic pain. These data suggest that health-care professionals should take religiosity into account when treating women with chronic pelvic pain.

While it has been argued that religion influences the meaning of work, few studies have empirically examined how employees' religiosity and job attitudes relate to one another. Specifically, this study investigated the relations among three religious orientations (intrinsic, extrinsic-personal, and extrinsic-social) and job involvement for 100 employees of a rehabilitation hospital in the southern United States. The respondents completed the 1989 Intrinsic/Extrinsic–Revised Scale and the 6-item version of the 1965 Job Involvement Scale. Correlation indicated a negative association between Intrinsic Religiosity and Job Involvement ( r = –.26, p < .05) and a positive one between Extrinsic-personal and Job Involvement ( r = .23, p < .05) for the total sample. When separated by religious affiliation, regression analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between scores on Extrinsic-personal Religiosity and in Job Involvement for Protestants ( B = .32, p < .01), but Intrinsic Religiosity was significantly negatively related to Job Involvement for non-Protestants ( B = –.35, p < .05). No relation was found between scores on Extrinsic-social Religiosity and Job Involvement for either group. These results suggest that employees' religiosity may influence work values in different ways for Protestant and non-Protestant workers.

The present study was a preliminary examination of the relations among the Organizational, Nonorganizational, and Intrinsic dimensions of religiosity and academic dishonesty. 244 college students completed the Duke Religion Index and nine questions assessing academic dishonesty. Analysis indicated that (1) regardless of sex, High Nonorganizational and Intrinsic religiosity was associated with lower reported rates of academic dishonesty, and (2) there was an interaction between Organizational religiosity and sex, with High Organizational women and men reporting similar rates of academic dishonesty. Furthermore, the frequency of academic dishonesty reported by High Organizational women was higher than the rates reported by Moderate and Minimal Organizational women.

This correlational study explores the hypothesis that religiosity and scriptural literalism (the degree to which one interprets scriptures literally) are associated with sexism. Participants were female and male ( N = 504) university students who anonymously completed the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory ( Glick & Fiske, 1996 , 1997 , 2001a , 2001b ), the Scriptural Literalism Scale ( Hogge & Friedman, 1967 ), and the Religious Orientation Scale-Revised ( Gorsuch & McPherson, 1989 ). Intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, and scriptural literalism were positively associated with benevolent, but not hostile, sexism. Intrinsic religiosity and scriptural literalism were positively related to the protective paternalism subscale, whereas extrinsic religiosity was related to the heterosexual intimacy, complementary gender differentiation, and protective paternalism subscales.

Abstract:

This paper studies the influence of religiosity on corporate risk-taking. The study uses unique micro-level data on religious devotion and distinguishes between manager religiosity, firm intrinsic religiosity, firm extrinsic religiosity, and social capital. Analysis shows that manager religiosity is associated with lower risk-taking. Firm intrinsic religiosity however, moderates this association. Further analysis shows that managers of Islamic firms are more likely to make risky decisions as compared to managers of other firms due to socio-religious pressure. Manager religiosity is also associated with lower firm equity risk. The results also suggest that strong external monitoring weakens the negative relationship between religiosity and risk-taking. This study shows how religious managers may be a double-edged sword. Religious managers are not risk-takers but are susceptible to social pressure. They are however, also more well-adjusted to a changing environment which inspires confidence in the markets.

The accurate measurement of an intrinsic and extrinsic orientation toward religiosity has been an on-going rigorous psychometric investigation within the psychology of religion for over 30 years. With this debate, a number of suggestions have been made to improve the measurement of Intrinsic/Extrinsic religiosity. The aim of the present study was to combine some of the suggestions made, and examine whether or not a combination of these amendments still provides a psychometrically reliable measure of intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions to religiosity. Respondents were 3090 adults and schoolchildren (1408 males, 1984 females) from the USA (N = 513), England (N = 1421), Northern Ireland (N = 839) and the Republic of Ireland (N = 468). All respondents have completed a 15-item revised and amended version of the ‘Age- Universal’ I-E scale, Principal components analysis with oblimin rotation of the items suggest a 6-item intrinsic scale and 3-item measures of extrinsic-personal and extrinsic-social religiosity dimensions. The present findings suggest a 12-item measure of intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions to religiosity (‘Age-Universal’ I-E Scale – 12) which can be used among a number of Western samples, among adults and school children, and among religious and non-religious individuals.

Abstract:

Religiosity affects various aspects of consumer behavior. This research distinguishes two dimensions: Intrinsic religiosity is lived per se, as a personal and intimate value; extrinsic religiosity is an instrument to attain personal goals by connecting with other people. Intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity likely affect the functions of consumers attitudes toward products, both value-expressive (e.g., to express the individual self) and social-adjustive (e.g., to be accepted by social groups). Intrinsically religious consumers have an inner self defined by their religiosity, so they do not seek social approval. They should have less need for products to express their inner selves or manifest social ties, compared with extrinsically religious consumers. In contrast, extrinsic religiosity may increase both value-expressive and social-adjustive functions of products. Study 1 supports these hypotheses; intrinsic religiosity decreases the value-expressive and social-adjustive functions of consumer attitudes, whereas extrinsic religiosity increases both attitude functions. Study 2 applies these findings to an advertising context and reveals that the purchase intentions of intrinsically religious consumers increase when they view a value-expressive instead of a social-adjustive advertisement. Purchase intentions among extrinsically religious consumers are higher than those of intrinsically religious consumers when they view a social-adjustive advertisement.

This study was a pilot examination of the religiousness of student athletes as compared to nonathletes. Participants were 248 undergraduate students (84 athletes) at the University of Florida who were enrolled in randomly chosen courses within the Department of Counselor Education. To assess the organizational, nonorganizational, and intrinsic dimensions of religion, the Duke Religion Index was used. Findings indicate that male and female athletes reported higher degrees of organizational, nonorganizational, and intrinsic religiousness than male nonathletes. Implications of these Findings on future research and applied sport practice are discussed.

Abstract:

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine a three-way interaction between the two motivational orientations of religiosity (i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic) and recognition (in this study, an explicit expectation that behavior is recognized) on charitable behavior. Further, drawing upon the evolutionary psychology perspective, the status motive is predicted to mediate the predicted effects. Design/methodology/approach Three experimental studies were conducted using a 2 (intrinsic religiosity: low/high; measured) × 2 (extrinsic religiosity: low/high; measured) × 2 (recognition: yes/no; manipulated) between-subjects design to examine the predicted effects on likelihood to donate and donation allocations in two Asian countries, namely, Indonesia and Malaysia. Findings The results show that recognition increases charitable behavior among consumers with a high level of extrinsic religiosity but low level of intrinsic religiosity (Studies 1a, 1b and 2). Further, a status motive mediates the predicted effects (Study 2). Research limitations/implications The present research provides a novel perspective on how marketers can purposively use recognition in charitable advertising to encourage charitable behavior among religious consumers – but only in Asia. Practical implications This paper presents the case for how a non-profit organization can develop charitable advertising for disaster relief in Indonesia (Studies 1a and 1b) and Malaysia (Study 2). The findings of this research could potentially be extended to other organizations in Asia or other countries where religiosity places an important role in consumer behavior. Originality/value This research shows the interactive effect between extrinsic religiosity, intrinsic religiosity and recognition can increase charitable behavior in Asia.

Using religious orientation paradigm, this twofold study examined the relationship between euthanasia attitude and religiosity, and compared single-item and multi-item scales of euthanasia attitude. Three hundred students were asked whether they view euthanasia as moral. In addition, participants completed the Euthanasia Attitude Scale (EAS) and Religious Orientation Scale-Revised. Results indicated that intrinsic religiosity was the strongest correlate of negative attitudes toward euthanasia. This type of religiosity explained additional variance when added to the two types of extrinsic religiosity (social, personal), but the reverse was not the case. Purpose: Drawing on self-determination theory (SDT), this article aims to examine the impact of customers’ intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity on purchase intentions for luxury brands. Moreover, this study delves into the moderating effect of customer brand loyalty in these relationships. Methodology: To this end, we tested our hypotheses with a student sample (N = 169) from Pakistan. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), structural equation modeling (SEM), and moderation analysis techniques were used to analyze the data using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0. Findings: The results of data analysis indicated that a customer’s purchase intention for luxury brands is significantly influenced by extrinsic religiosity, while intrinsic religiosity has trivial influence in boosting purchase intention for a luxury brand. Our results for moderation analysis further show that customer purchase intention for a luxury brand is reinforced by intrinsic religiosity when customer brand loyalty is high but not when customer brand loyalty is low, whereas purchase intention for a luxury brand is fortified more by extrinsic religiosity when customer brand loyalty is low than when customer brand loyalty is high. Research Limitations: As with any set of cross-sectional studies, our research is not without limitations. For instance, the sample size in the current study is purposefully small. This limits the generalizability of findings across a wider population. Implications/originality/value: This study has provided a framework to explain how customers’ intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity affected the purchase intentions of luxury brands in the emerging market.

This study aims to find out the influence of money ethics on tax evasion with intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, and materialism as moderating variables. The sample is selected by using convinience sampling method with sample size of a 100 respondents as primary data. This study uses simple regression and moderated regression analysis for hypothesis testing. The result of this study shows that money ethics has an effect on tax evasion, intrinsic religiosity moderarates the relationship between money ethics and tax evasion. Extrinsic religiosity does not moderate the relationship bertween money ethics and tax evasion. Materialism moderates the relationship between money ethics and tax evasion.

Research suggests that religious practice has a small but consistent inverse relationship with depression, but recent work within the Jewish population has been equivocal. Following the behavioral model of depression, one explanation is that religious activity may provide positive reinforcement. We hypothesized that this would be true only for those who intrinsically value religion, and conversely, religious practice may be depressogenic for individuals lacking intrinsic motivation. We tested this possibility in a longitudinal sample of 160 Jewish individuals meeting DSM–IV criteria for a mood disorder. Multilevel autoregressive growth modeling suggested that controlling for past depressive symptoms, past intrinsic religiosity, and religious practice jointly predicted future depression. Individuals with high religious practice and high intrinsic religiosity reported lower future depressive symptoms, whereas those with high practice and low intrinsic religiosity reported higher depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that religious practice can have both protective and harmful effects, depending on internal values.

BackgroundReligiosity is a protective factor against many health problems, including alcohol use disorders (AUD). Studies suggest that religiosity has greater buffering effects on mental health problems among US Blacks and Hispanics than Whites. However, whether race/ethnic differences exist in the associations of religiosity, alcohol consumption and AUD is unclear.MethodUsing 2004–2005 NESARC data (analytic n = 21 965), we examined the relationship of public religiosity (i.e. frequency of service attendance, religious social group size), and intrinsic religiosity (i.e. importance of religious/spiritual beliefs) to frequency of alcohol use and DSM-IV AUD in non-Hispanic (NH) Blacks, Hispanics and NH Whites, and whether associations differed by self-identified race/ethnicity.ResultsOnly public religiosity was related to AUD. Frequency of religious service attendance was inversely associated with AUD (NH Whites β: −0.103, p < 0.001; NH Blacks β: −0.115, p < 0.001; Hispanics β: −0.096, p < 0.001). This association was more robust for NH Blacks as compared with NH Whites and Hispanics (interaction β: 0.025, p < 0.001). Among NH Whites, higher intrinsic religiosity was inversely associated with alcohol use frequency (β: −0.143, p < 0.001). These effects were more robust among NH Whites (interaction (β: 0.072, p < 0.033) than for NH Blacks (β: −0.080, p > 0.05) or Hispanics (β: −0.002, p > 0.05).ConclusionsUS adults reporting greater public religiosity were at lower risk for AUD. Public religiosity may be particularly important among NH Blacks, while intrinsic religiosity may be particularly important among NH Whites, and among Hispanics who frequently attend religious services. Findings may be explained by variation in drinking-related norms observed among these groups generally, and in the context of specific religious institutions.

Background/purpose: Research from other disciplines demonstrates that ethical position, idealism, or relativism predicts ethical decision-making. Individuals from diverse cultures ascribe to various religious beliefs and studies have found that religiosity and culture affect ethical decision-making. Moreover, little literature exists regarding undergraduate nursing students’ ethical position; no studies have been conducted in the United States on students’ ethical position, their self-identified culture, and intrinsic religiosity despite an increase in the diversity of nursing students across the United States. Participants and Research Context Objectives: The study’s two aims were to determine the relationship of self-identified culture, religiosity, and ethics position of undergraduate nursing student and whether students’ level of education and past ethics courses taken related to idealism. Two hundred and twelve volunteer undergraduate students participated. Research design: A descriptive cross-sectional study was designed for participants who completed the Ethical Position Questionnaire, The intrinsic subscale of the Religious Orientation Scale, and a Demographic, Cultural, Ethnicity Form. To test the five hypotheses, analyses included t-tests, correlations, and ANOVA. Ethical Considerations: The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at Adelphi University. Results: Idealism and intrinsic religiosity were significantly related. Differences were observed for intrinsic religiosity and idealism for cultural identity and cultural dimensions such as parents’ place of birth, and if participants were US born. Students’ level of education or participation in past courses on ethics did not influence idealism. Conclusions: The study’s findings were similar to most of the research from other disciplines on culture, ethics position, and religiosity. Generic courses on ethics taken prior to clinical work may not assist nursing students in integrating principles into complex ethical dilemmas. Self-identified culture, religion, and intrinsic religiosity related to ethics position; completing ethics courses and level of education, juniors compared with seniors, did not influence idealism. Faculty should consider integrating students’ culture, religious orientation, and ethics position into teaching ethics for all levels of nursing education.

West African researchers have investigated consumption and religious beliefs to explain the weight of religion on individuals’ consumption behavior. However, studies that investigated intrinsic religious beliefs and consumption in the context are not common. The purpose of this research is to explore how intrinsic religious beliefs shape the Muslim consumer behavior in the sector of beverages. The approach is a quantitative one and based on a post-positivist stance. The results show that Muslims intrinsic religiosity has some sensitive effects on consumer behavior in a multi-religious environment tinted by extreme poverty, and a strong cultural heritage of consumption. Thus, the intrinsic religious beliefs effects on consumer behavior are sometimes characterized by some non-tolerant and violent attitude from the part of some consumers. Background: Health-related lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and obesity are major cardiovascular risk factors. Previous studies have mostly demonstrated a favorable association between religiosity and these cardiovascular risk factors; however, no studies have investigated this relationship in Polish immigrants. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between health-related lifestyle behaviors and religiosity in Polish immigrants in Germany. Methods: The smoking patterns, frequency of alcohol consumption, physical activity, and presence of overweight/obesity were assessed in 257 first-generation immigrants of Polish origin living in Germany. Religiosity was measured with the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS, Huber, 2003) consisting of 15 items that categorized the respondents into intrinsically, extrinsically, and not/marginally religious. Results: After adjusting for various sociodemographic, migration, and health-related characteristics, intrinsic religiosity was significantly associated with a lower risk of being a smoker (odds ratios (OR) = 0.34, confidence intervals (CI) = 0.15–0.76) and was also associated with a lower risk of alcohol consumption (OR = 0.33, CI = 0.15–0.71), but a higher risk of being overweight/obese (OR = 2.53, CI = 1.15–5.56) in comparison with extrinsic/marginal religiosity. No significant relationship was found between religiosity and physical activity. Conclusions: In Polish immigrants, intrinsic religiosity acts as a protective factor against some cardiovascular risk factors (smoking and alcohol consumption).

This study was designed to examine the relationships between social support, perceived stress, religiosity, and flourishing and to test the mediating role of perceived stress in the relationships between social support and religiosity with flourishing. This study also examines the moderating roles of religiosity and gender in the relationship between social support and flourishing among 2301 Malaysian older adults. Structural Equation Modelling showed that older adults with high levels of social support, high levels of intrinsic religious motivation, high levels of extrinsic religious motivation, and low levels of perceived stress were more likely to experience flourishing. Bootstrapping analysis provided evidence of perceived stress as a significant partial mediator in the links between social support, intrinsic religious motivation, and extrinsic religious motivation with flourishing. Multi-group analysis revealed that religiosity and gender acted as significant moderators in the links between social support, perceived stress, and flourishing.

The two constructs apparently are related mostly among those who are high in intrinsic religiosity or low in death anxiety, or both. Age seems to be an important factor in the development of this relationship. Samples from Kuwait (N = 294) and the United States (N = 279) completed instruments to assess death anxiety and intrinsic religious motivation. The Kuwaitis scored much higher than the Americans in both. State anxiety may have influenced the Kuwaitis’ death anxiety scores. Relationships and cross-cultural differences are examined.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of ethical judgements, depending on religiosity level of consumers, on decisions of buying or not buying products from supermarkets selling alcoholic beverages. Design/methodology/approach The scope of this study covers consumers from province of Mus in Turkey who indicate they go shopping at supermarkets. Accordingly, data are collected from 362 consumers via face-to-face survey and the results are evaluated through regression analysis. Findings According to analysis, it was found that the internal and external religiosity of the consumers positively affected their ethical judgement towards the markets selling alcoholic beverages. Besides, it is concluded that the ethical judgements of consumers have a positive impact on boycott decisions against supermarkets selling alcoholic beverages. Originality/value The survey contributes to relevant literature by putting forth the impact of ethical judgements of consumers, associated with their level of religiosity, on their decisions as to preference of supermarkets. Moreover, this study is consistent with the previous studies and supports the conclusion that the ethical decisions are affected by the extrinsic and intrinsic levels of religiosity; however, they are more affected by the intrinsic levels of religiosity.

Purpose Given the growing importance of spirituality and religion-related factors in the workplace, this paper aims to analyze the effects of spirituality, intrinsic religiosity and Islamic work ethics (IWE) on employee job performance. Design/methodology/approach Building on these theoretical concepts and perspectives, the authors hypothesized that employee intrinsic motivation mediated these proposed effects. To verify these propositions, the authors examined data collected from 224 full-time employees working for various organizations in Morocco. The authors conducted structural equations modeling (SEM) analyses using the AMOS 24 platform and Bayesian analyses to investigate direct and indirect effects. Findings First, the authors found that only IWE has positive and significant direct effect on job performance. Second, the findings indicate that employee intrinsic motivation does not mediate the relationship between the independent variables of spirituality and intrinsic religiosity and the dependent variable of job performance. These results may be because of the fact that Islamic principles and values are implemented and more reinforced in the Moroccan workplace than new and modern concepts such as intrinsic religiosity and spirituality. Research limitations/implications The present paper used a cross-sectional methodology, which did not allow testing causation between the constructs under study. Practical implications Organizations and managers alike ought to resort to IWE insights with the objective to increase the performance of their Muslim members. Originality/value This paper is novel as it represents a study on spirituality in a non-Western context. It also uses a relatively sizeable sample (N = 224) of full-time employees in the workplace.

Abstract Objective: To verify the association between religiosity and functional capacity in the elderly. Method: a systematic review of literature in the SciELO, Lilacs, MEDLINE/PubMed and the portal of CAPES Journals databases was performed. The descriptors were selected through the list of Descriptors in Health Sciences (Decs) and Medical Subject Headings (Mesh). Original articles in Portuguese and English, published between 2007 and 2017, with a sample composed of elderly persons aged 60 years or more were included. Systematic or integrative reviews, case studies, scale validation studies, dissertations and theses and studies on religious social support were excluded, as well as articles that included elderly persons and adults in the sample. Result: 280 articles were identified, of which six were included in this review. Religiosity was associated with improved functional capacity and coping with disability and the delay of functional decline in the elderly. Different aspects of religiosity were associated with functional capacity, such as participation in religious activities, religious leadership role performance and religious beliefs and traditions. In three articles the positive association between religiosity and functional capacity was linked only to public religious activities and not to intrinsic religious practices. Conclusion: religiosity is significantly and positively associated with the functional capacity of the elderly. The association between intrinsic religiosity and functional capacity is still unclear.

ABSTRACT There are few studies on the religiosity of people with Alzheimer’s disease (PwAD) and caregivers, relation with quality of life (QoL) and clinical aspects. Objective: To assess the religiosity and QoL of 39 PwAD and their caregivers; to compare perceived QoL and religiosity of the PwAD with those of their caregivers; to associate QoL and religiosity with the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms, and depression with cognitive performance of PwAD. Results: Organizational religiosity was greater in caregivers. The AD patients had poorer perceived QoL than their caregivers. Caregiver religiosity correlated with that of the AD patients. Higher intrinsic religiosity was associated with lower occurrence of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Better caregiver QoL correlated with cognitive performance. Lower occurrence of depression correlated with better QoL of the caregivers and AD patients. Conclusion: The religiosity of caregivers was correlated with that of the AD patients. Better QoL and lower religiosity were observed in caregivers when compared with the AD patients. Caregiver religiosity and QoL were associated with neuropsychiatric and cognitive aspects and depression.

Abstract:

A brief, three-item measure of intrinsic religiosity adapted from Gorsuch and Venable (1983) was used with over 900 male and female Reserve Component veterans who had been serving in the military during the Persian Gulf War. In general, approximately two-thirds of the veterans indicated agreement or strong agreement with an internal commitment to their religious beliefs. Despite its brevity, the scale demonstrated adequate estimates of internal consistency reliability (alpha = .93). It was also found that the female veterans reported a significantly higher mean on intrinsic religiosity as measured by this scale than did the male veterans.

Abstract:

Objective: The primary objective of this study is to assess whether the degree of religiosity or certain moral teachings are associated with dyspareunia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey with 24 questions was designed that incorporated the previously validated Duke Religiosity Index questionnaire, medical and sexual history, and demographic information. The index measures organizational, non-organizational, and intrinsic religiosity. Participants were recruited from Ob/Gyn and Family Medicine clinics and from a large university in our community. Results: A total of 901 surveys were included in final analysis. Among our study population, the prevalence of dyspareunia was 19.4%. Participants were categorized by the presence or absence of the primary outcome, dyspareunia. There were no differences in the scores of organized religiosity, p = 0.73 (2.98 ± 0.47 vs 3.04 ± 1.55), non-organized religiosity, p = 0.57 (2.62 ± 1.71 vs 2.82 ± 1.82), or intrinsic religiosity p = 0.64 (10.53 ± 3.63 vs 10.47 ± 4.06) in women with and without dyspareunia, respectively. No associations were found between dyspareunia and a participant’s current or childhood religious affiliation. However, women who were taught “sex is bad” while growing up had a higher rate of dyspareunia compared to those who were not taught this belief, (27.0% vs 15.3%, p < 0.001). Similar results were found in women who were taught to “wait until marriage to have sex”; 21.6% experienced dyspareunia while only 13.2% of those who were not taught to wait experienced dyspareunia (p = 0.005). Conclusions: While degree of religiosity was not shown to be associated with dyspareunia, women who learned certain restrictive sexual values were at higher risk of experiencing painful intercourse.

Abstract:

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to use international survey data to investigate the effects of religiosity, religious denomination, communist heritage, and socio-economic development on work values. Design/methodology/approach – First, religiosity and work values are conceptualized. Next, the relationships among these concepts are discussed and the hypotheses, variables, and data are presented. Finally, the results of the empirical tests are presented and the theoretical and managerial implications, as well as avenues for future research, are discussed. Findings – It is found that socio-economic development negatively, whereas religiosity and communist heritage positively, influence extrinsic work values. Further analysis reveals that religiosity has a quadratic relationship with intrinsic work values. Conspicuously, after controlling for the effects of religiosity, no significant association is found between religious denominations and work values. Research limitations/implications – The current analysis relies only on national/societal level data and overlooks the effects of independent variables (religiosity and communist heritage) at the individual level. Furthermore, the methodologies and measurements of religiosity and work values are of a limited scope. Thus, future studies may look into the effects of religiosity on work values at the individual level and apply other conceptualizations and measures to test the validity of the results. Practical implications – Based on the findings of this study, it can be suggested that the use of intrinsic rewards might be less appropriate in the societies marked by communist heritage or high religiosity. On the contrary, these societies may embrace more extrinsic work values associated with direct, restrictive, and tangible aspects of work. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by conceptualizing, measuring, and incorporating various variables into the research design and by providing original insights into the influence of religion on work values. Furthermore, this study suggests that, at least with regard to work values, religiosity (the strength of one’s conviction for their religion) is more important than religious denomination (Protestantism, Catholicism, Islam, Orthodox Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism).
