Abstract:
In this thesis we discuss amenability properties of the Banach algebra-valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space X. Let A be a Banach algebra. The space of A-valued continuous functions on X, denoted by C(X,A), form a new Banach algebra. We show that C(X,A) has a bounded approximate diagonal (i.e. it is amenable) if and only if A has a bounded approximate diagonal. We also show that if A has a compactly central approximate diagonal then C(X,A) has a compact approximate diagonal. We note that, unlike C(X), in general C(X,A) is not a C*-algebra, and is no longer commutative if A i

Abstract:
The discovery of topological quantum states of matter has required physicists to look beyond Landau’s theory of symmetry-breaking, previously the main paradigm for
studying states of matter. This has led also to the development of new topological theories for describing the novel properties. In this dissertation an investigation in this
frontier research area is presented, which looks at the interplay between the quantum geometry of these states, defects and disorder. After a brief introduction to the topological quantum states of matter considered herein, some aspects of my work in this

Abstract:
D. Phil (Mathematics)
In this thesis we investigate generalized chromatic numbers in the context of hereditary graph properties. We also investigate the general topic of invariants of graphs as well as graph properties. In Chapter 1 we give relevant definitions and terminology pertaining to graph properties. In Chapter 2 we investigate generalized chromatic numbers of some well-known additive hereditary graph properties. This problem necessitates the investigation of reducible bounds. One of the results here is an improvement on a known upper bound for the path partition number of the prope

In particular, it is devoted to the study of those properties which can be obtained by the application of non-linear transformations, such as Cole-Hopf, Miura and reciprocal-type transformations. The concept of Backlund Chart is introduced to depict succinctly the various rel
