Respiratory motion of the heart limits the utility of image-guided cardiac interventions, causing misalignments between the pre-procedure information used for guidance and the intra-procedure moving anatomy and instruments. As a result, the guidance can be misleading, compromising the accuracy and success of the intervention. Respiratory motion models have been proposed to estimate and correct for respiratory motion, but to date their clinical uptake has been very limited due to a lack of accuracy and robustness, and the interruptions that they typically introduce into the clinical work flow.

Abstract:
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a highly diverse and adaptable opportunistic pathogen that can infect and colonise different niches within the human host to cause a wide range of invasive disease (sepsis and meningitis) and noninvasive disease (pneumonia, otitis media and sinusitis). The molecular mechanisms that contribute to the different patterns of pneumococcal infection remain largely unknown. This thesis aims to determine the physiological and proteomic responses that allow the pneumococcus to survive and adapt to invasive and non-invasive sites. The comparative proteomic analyses of clinica

The present thesis proposes new methods for obtaining objective and accurate diagnoses in modern healthcare. Non-invasive techniques have been used to examine or diagnose three different medical conditions, namely neuropathy among diabetics, radiotherapy induced erythema (skin redness) among breast cancer patients and diagnoses of cutaneous malignant melanoma. The techniques used were Near-InfraRed spectroscopy (NIR), Multi Frequency Bio Impedance Analysis of whole body (MFBIA-body), Laser Doppler Imaging (LDI) and Digital Colour Photography (DCP).

The neuropathy for diabetics was stu

Abstract:
The production of antibodies for analytical purposes using invasive procedures on small mammals is common practice in biomedical research. The aim of this study was to develop an efficient method for non-invasive antibody production in the chicken. This thesis presents an alternative method that eliminates the discomfort, pain and distress invoked by traditional immunization procedures on mammals by instead harvesting antibodies (IgY) from the yolk of eggs laid by orally immunized hens. An efficient oral immunization regime was developed by first trying out a suitable non-aggressive oral adjuv
