Abstract:

„Psy i okaleczeńcy”. Translating Paul’s Invectives against Judaizers (Gal. 3:3; Phil. 3:2) Insults (contumelia) and invectives (invectiva oratio) were known to inspired authors, but their overtones in modern translations usually lose their strength. Should a translator avoid harsh words contained in the original invectives, or should he remain faithful to them? It is shown by analyzing Paul’s invectives in Phil. 3:2 and in Gal. 3:1.3. The author claims that: 1) avoiding the invectives in the translation weakens a message of the original text (Gal. 3:1.3); 2) the translational consistency (“źli pracownicy”; Phil. 3:2) favors understanding of the invectives; 3) the invectives that exist in Polish, when their scope deviates from the Greek original, require clarification in footnotes (“psy”; Phil. 3:2); 4) the multitude of hapax legomena in the Bible justifies the use of neologisms, as long as they accurately reflect the content of the original (“przerzezanie”; Phil. 3:2).

Abstract:

The relevance of the study is due to the interest of modern linguistics to the speech of ordinary person. The article represents a short review of foreign and Ukrainian scholars’ investigations dedicated to the invectiveness. The sources of the invectiveness and reasons for using invectives are found out. The invectiveness is the property of words to acquire additional semantic and pragmatic connotations, which are intended to offend the interlocutor. Invectives and swearing in general are verbal violations of the prohibition that exist in some social group. The main functions of invective vocabulary are verbalization of aggression in a conflict situation; reduction of emotional stress; filling pauses during speech; setting social distance social distance. Attention is paid to the features of functioning of invectives in a modern media environment, in particular child and teenage one. The influence of vocabulary with invective semantics on the consciousness of the recipient is substantiated. A survey within the research topic was conducted to identify users' attitudes to media content that contains invective vocabulary. Attached to the survey video is a fragment from the cartoon “Bender's Game”. The results of the survey indicate ambiguous perception of content with invectives, lack of a single strategy for the selection and control of children's content among parents. According to the answers received, 3 types of attitudes to invective vocabulary can be distinguished: negative (taboo and avoiding invective vocabulary in real life and information space); neutral (the use of invectives in life and virtual space is determined by situation and has a goal); positive (extensive use of invectives, their perception as a means of expressing speech, part of everyday vocabulary). Further research of invectives and specifics of their verbalization will establish the influence of content on the language personality and define the connection between a person's communicative behavior and his information space.

Abstract:

Reading the ancient scriptures of Christians of the first centuries, one can easily notice numerous invectives. From among the Fathers of the Church there are three who in particular deserve the title of “fathers of Christian invectives”. One of those who best can be described as such is St. Jerome of Stridonius. It should not come as a surprise, because in ancient times one did not reach only for intellectual arguments when defending their views. A logical elucidation was merely a part of argumentation. The other part, of no less importance, were arguments ad hominem, including also invectives. Verbal insults were integral part of argumentation and the lack of them would decrease the value of debate. In this article, based on St. Jerome’s of Stridonius writings, I portrayed his reactions to the phenomenon of pelagianism, as well as to the person of Pelagius himself. This subject has been analysed in many articles, but I presented it from a different angle. Namely, I emphasized varied interesting invectives that St. Jerome – well-known for his sharp tongue – directed to Pelagius, basing on argumentum ad personam.

Abstract:

The article aims at analyzing of the contemporary political discourse modality that has acquired specific characteristic features of highly emotional utterances based on deliberate or unintended violation of political etiquette principles recently. The article’s generalized theorizing is illustrated by a sample of case study of invectives in political discourse. This analysis aims at distinguishing “agonal” signs (a deliberate use of invectives in speech) and pragmatic borrowings (inadvertent use of invectives) in their functioning, their pragma-semantic characteristics and discursive markers, which helps us in identification of both types of political discourse linguistic items. This research represents an integrative approach combining the Critical Discourse Analysis, the Political Discourse Semiotics Theory, the Role Theory, the Communication Theory, and others, in order to discover the actual reasons and consequences of these changes in the society in general, and in political discourse in particular.

Abstract:

This paper addresses the use of invectives in modern Ghanaian politics. Evidence is drawn from public speeches of political activists of the two leading parties of the country, namely: the National Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The paper analyses at the context as well, i.e. the participants involved, the reaction of the public, and tries to answer the question what makes a public speech or utterance an invective. It also considers some pragmatic effects of such invectives in the over all development of the country and the need for reconciliation.

Invectives of the Second World War period. Linguistic means of insulting political opponents/enemies in the underground press of 1939–1945The author of the article examines strategies used to belittle political opponents in the underground press published in Poland in 1939–1945. It turns out that the language of political propaganda in the period had many communication strategies employed in the fight against political rivals, often regarded as enemies. The author presents examples of how political invectives were used in a very important period of power struggle among political parties operating in the underground.

Abstract:

The article is focused on words and expressions of the Arabic language, semantically related to the sexual sphere, in the context of their use as a means of verbal aggression. The author examines the prerequisites for acquiring invectiveness by copulatory vocabulary in both the Christian and Islamic worldviews, relying on the works of K. Allen and K. Burridge, J. Feinberg, G. Hughes, devoted to swear words in English-speaking culture, as well as the works of V.I. Zelvis on the means of verbal aggression in Russian language. In addition, this paper pays special attention to Arabic references, including the Quran, the writings of religious figures Abu Daoud, Ibn Qudama, Sayyid Hasan and the linguists Al-Razi and Al-Manshawi, particularly, their view on the problems of tabooing and invectivization of the sphere of sexual relations is analyzed.Discovery of the origins of the ban on mentioning of the copulatory topic in Arab society made it possible to determine the range of invective means related to this topic, which the author divides into three groups: sexual intercourse and its various forms, genitals and other private body parts, deviations in the sexual sphere. An important feature of the approach used in this article is that lexical units are considered primarily as means of delivering invective meaning to the addressee, associated with concepts that directly encapsulate that meaning. Implementing this approach, the author identifies the main invective concepts presented in the Arabic linguistic culture, and also makes out a list of lexemes associated with each concept. In order to study this vocabulary in detail and determine its role in the modern Arabic language, the author analyzes its etymology and functioning in invective speech constructions that actually exist in various Arabic idioms.

Abstract:

The subject of this research is the abusive language (invectives) prohibited by the rules of the International Song Contest “Eurovision”. The goal consists in substantiating the role of obscene language as a linguistic manipulation in song discourse of “Eurovision” contest. The tabooed words and expressions represent a wide array of lexical units for research by modern linguistic science based on the materials of various voice compositions. Using the lyrics of songs that participated in “Eurovision” and made top 10 chart, the author determined those that contain invectives. The scientific novelty consists in the first ever analysis of song lyrics that contained the lexical units of abusive language prohibited by the rules of “Eurovision”. It was determined that the compositions of multimodal discourse contain various invectives in verbal component. The authors of songs for “Eurovision” apply different linguistic manipulations to influence the live voting and ensure a spot in the finals for their composition. This is directly related to increase in the number of participating countries; therefore, the structure and content of verbal component of a musical-poetic composition of Eurovision plays an important role. Despite the prohibition by rules of the context to use tabooed lexicon in song lyrics, the author was able to identify certain violations in the English-language and Italian-language compositions. The conclusion is made that invectives in the song discourse are effective linguistic manipulations that enhance suggestive semantics of speech act, since all compositions made it to the top 10.

Abstract:

The pragmatic orientation of invective is the use of neutral commonly used concepts, which under the condition of a communicative act are transformed into expressive symbols that acquire emotionality, humility, comedy, jokes, insults. In this way, the speaker does not think what to say, his goal is how to say, with what feelings. The use of invective does not imply the presence of education, intelligence, sphere of activity, as the addressee is separated from the addressee by expression, connotation, joke, contempt, contempt, outrageousness, etc.Observations of modern postmodern texts convincingly show that today speech and written texts are signifi cantly infl uenced by oral speech. Analyzing the speech of contemporary Ukrainian literary texts, we conclude that the source of stylistically reduced, in particular non-normative vocabulary, is both collo-quial literature and colloquial non-literary vocabulary.Non-normative units function with diff erent degrees of frequency – colloquial vocabulary, invectives predominate, slang and spatial elements, slang show the lowest frequency. The most important function of invective is its use as a tool to combat the opponent, in particular in confl ict discourse. From this general function follow such private varieties as accusation, discrediting, humiliation, demoraliza-tion of the opponent. Moreover, normative tokens can act as an invective if they are used to humiliate the opponent or give his image a negative characterization.In terms of linguistic expression, as we observe, there are the following types of invectives: abusive invectives, invective labels, ironic invectives. The loose-ness, ease and irregularity of everyday speech leaves its mark on the design of statements, which is refl ected in the selection and use of invective. Non-verbal design also plays an important role in creating a pejoratively colored text with pejoratives. The study of these tools is quite promising.

Abstract:

Appelatives having an insulting function have been used since the earliest times. Nowadays, they are present in standard language and in substandard types of language (sociolects). The aim of the article is to show that animal-related invectives are more and more frequently usedin order to express negative emotions towards the receiver. In Polish and Ukrainian, the number of animal-related invectives increases but also semantics of the words broaden as the meaning of those words originally referred to the name of a given animal. The lexemes were analyzed and divided into two groups: names of animals that have several meanings, but some of them overlap (pl. baran – ukr. бapaн, pl. cap – ukr. цaп, pl. krowa – ukr. кopoвa) and names that have completely different meanings in the two languages (pl. wydra – ukr. видpa, pl. larwa – ukr. ляpвa, pl. szakal – ukr. шaкaл).

Abstract:

A large body of literature shows that boys and girls experience different kinds of peer aggression. This difference is usually explained by the function of bullying depending on gender and age. In the present study, we used a mixed method called concept mapping to analyze the content structure of verbal aggression. We compared this structure between two levels of Polish schools—middle school and high school. Using experimental manipulation we tested whether the content of verbal invectives depends on the gender of the victim. Results showed six different types of verbal invectives. Middle school students listed substantially more in four out of the six categories. There were significant effects of the experimental manipulation of the victim's gender. When the male victim was primed there were significantly more sexual insults and when the female victim was primed there was substantially more ability-related verbal bullying. We interpret these results in the context of the development and norms of masculinity and femininity.

Abstract:

Among the multiplicity of genres and modes Irish authors have cultivated, it seems that satire has prevailingly flourished throughout the history of Irish literature. From the first invectives of Aithirne the Importunate to the works of contemporary authors such as Robert McLiam Wilson or Colin Bateman, satire has been an indissoluble component of the social, political and religious life of Ireland. It is no wonder, thus, that some of the most prestigious Irish writers -namely Jonathan Swift, Richard Sheridan, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Austin Clarke, or even James Joyce- have been unanimously praised and recognised as satirists. My purpose in this paper will be to trace a preliminary overview on the role satire has played in the Irish literary tradition, focusing on several authors and on how their targets and rhetorical strategies have evolved from Aithirne's early invectives. Therefore, this paper will purport to analyse issues such as the tumultuous relationship between Ireland and Great Britain, the unquestionable authority exerted by the Church, and the way recent novelists envisage the so-called Northern Irish "Troubles".

Abstract:

The article is devoted to identifying the reasons for the more frequent laughter among listeners, caused by invectives addressed to the opponents’ pseudonyms rather than to their real names. In this regard, much attention in the work is paid to the concept of invective associated with the art of clownery. Since the times of Ancient Greece and Rome, it was one of the most important strategies of rhetorical art; now it is a key definition of a rap battle, in which the audience witnesses not humor, but something between humor and seriousness. (The written comments of the audience can be compared with the satirical texts of folk poetry: its anonymous authors treat the depicted characters as representatives of the laugh world that do not exist in reality.) Therefore, it is no coincidence that rap duels, which are discussed in this article, are considered the heirs of the ancient НАУКА ТЕЛЕВИДЕНИЯ № 16.3, 2020 91 THE ART AND SCIENCE OF TELEVISION poetic competitions, where participants exalted themselves by humiliating their partners. The article analyzes oral and written texts of rap battles and viewers’ comments with reference to a deep, humorous interpretation. The basis here is the Kozintsev’s metasemantic approach to the phenomenon of humor, which was not previously applied to their analysis. According to this approach, humor is explained by the ability to make fun of one’s own stupidity and auto–parody of oneself as a representative of Homo sapiens. The comic nature is especially pronounced in clowns and is extremely uncommon for participants in rap battles. In the beginning of the research, it was suggested that the rules of rap duels probably prevent comic situations from occurring during rap battles. Later, however, the author came to the conclusion that in reality, these rules provoke humorous moments, since the audience begins to transform the participants’ pseudonyms into carnival nicknames, perceiving them at an unconscious level as a game signal.

In response to my review of his book, Hitler’s Willing Executions, Daniel Goldhagen suggests, in the Fall 1997 issue of German Politics and Society (GPS), that I was unduly critical. His failure to address my main criticisms, and his abusive language interspersed with invectives and ad hominem attacks make replying to his article quite complicated. Ao longo dos quatro livros das <em>Invective contra medicum</em>, Petrarca emprega uma ampla gama de metáforas animais a fim de denegrir seu adversário. A obra, escrita entre os anos de 1352 e 1355, foi, de acordo com o poeta, destinada a um anônimo médico da corte papal de Clemente VI e era uma resposta ao violento ataque que lhe fora desferido por este homem, que parece ter ficado ofendido com algumas afirmações feitas por Petrarca em uma carta enviada ao papa pouco tempo antes. Por intermédio de duras críticas à dialética, estas invectivas promovem um ataque ainda mais forte contra a “mecânica” arte da medicina, que encerra, por sua vez, uma mais ampla batalha contra um numeroso conjunto de intelectuais reunidos pelo poeta no grupo dos <em>magistri artium</em> dos mais renomados centros escolásticos de sua época. A linguagem crua e violenta destas invectivas é pressuposta pelas convenções do gênero e são tomadas dos seus modelos, latinos e cristãos, manifestamente evocados por Petrarca. O poeta não poupa seu adversário de um ataque pessoal, e o compara com um ávido cão incapaz de controlar seus apetites, tal como mencionado por Sêneca em uma carta a Lucílio. Numa evocação às <em>Verrinas</em> de Cícero, o médico é então descrito como um porco, e é também representado como um asno saído do livro de Apuleio. Também as Sagradas Escrituras fornecem a ele um amplo repertório de imagens bestiais, como a da traiçoeira e venenosa cobra ou a da mal-cheirosa poupa que se alimenta de excrementos e restos humanos. Dessa maneira, Petrarca mobiliza um largo bestiário para reprovar o estilo de vida do médico, seus hábitos e práticas, e assim denegrir a sua imagem. Inversamente, o poeta compara a si próprio com um animal uma única vez, o leão, num esforço manifesto de produzir uma imagem positiva do orador, contraposta àquela do médico. Sob a alegoria desses símiles vexatórios, Petrarca pressupõe todo um sistema de sentidos consolidado por um extenso e difundido costume poético, e cristalizado por um vasto conjunto de comentários e exegeses. Este artigo pretende perseguir essas comparações vituperativas, os sentidos implicados nessas metáforas para a prática do discurso petrarquista e, mais especificamente, para a economia argumentativa dessas invectivas contra o médico do Papa.

The reviewer examines the arguments supplied by Bit-Yunan and Feldman, and criticizes them for their invectives against earlier biographers, in particular, Semyon Lipkin.

Żydy ‘Jews’ and Psy ‘Dogs’ in Stadium Hate SpeechThe paper discusses selected problems of the language of football fanatics who constitute the so- -called szalikowcy subculture (‘hooligans; lit. scarfers’). The author pays most attention to two (pejorative) personal expressions: żyd ‘Jew’ and pies ‘dog’ which, in the hate-saturated conflict between the fans of two clubs from Cracow, Cracovia and Wisła, are used as heavy insults and invectives serving to humiliate and depreciate the opponent. The paper analyses the sphere of negative semantic connotations of both words, their origin and fluctuations.
