Abstract:
More than one-third of the world population is infected with Tuberculosis (TB). World Health Organization has declared Tuberculosis as a global public health emergency in 1993. The people, affected by TB, are usually living in developing countries. In fact, TB is especially prevalent in Southeast Asia. China has been listed as a country with a high TB burden yet there are 150 “one-way permit” holders, across the border in China, for settlement purposes in Hong Kong. There is neither any health requirement nor obligatory physical examination before entry into Hong Kong. Unlike other developed countries, Hong Kong has no screening policy for people from Mainland China for migration purpose. The aim of this project is to explore the possibilities for different screening policies for new immigrants in Hong Kong, similar to those adopted by developed countries. Objectives include: (a) review of research articles and (b) careful perusal of selected government documents. Electronic databases of research articles for migration screening policy and data from World Health Organization, United Nations and other international and local authorizes were searched and analyzed to suggest practical policies for Hong Kong. Findings indicate that most developed countries have implemented pre-arrival screening policy, which is not practical in Hong Kong. Studies showed no significant difference between ‘pre’, ‘on’ or ‘post’ arrival programmes. Post arrival screening could be considered as the most suitable option for Hong Kong, according to the analyses of the data. Tuberculosis and Chest Service, Department of Health has the capacity to act as the screening authority for settlement purpose and could provide expert recommendation to Immigration Department about the health status of permanent residency applicants. Given the importance of screening, in various countries, to reduce the incidence of TB, Hong Kong could and should adopt a screening policy in order to decrease new notifications and enhance the local public health status.
published_or_final_version
Public Health
Master
Master of Public Health

Cheung, Shuk-ting, and 張淑婷. "Validation of the psychological maltreatment of women inventory for Chinese women." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/196490.

Full text
Abstract:
In view of the lack of a culture-specific tool to measure psychological maltreatment comprehensively in Chinese women, this research study aims to validate the Psychological Maltreatment of Women Inventory (PMWI) for Chinese women. The validation was conducted in two phases: (a) preparation of the Revised Chinese PMWI and (b) full psychometric testing of the questionnaire. In the preparation phase, the PMWI was first revised taking into account the possible cultural differences between Chinese and non-Chinese women. In addition, given the changing nature of psychological maltreatment with the advent of mobile digital devices, supplementary items were added to keep the instrument in line with the expanding scope of this phenomenon. The revised PMWI included 67 items after revision, and was translated into Chinese by two bilingual translators using forward and back translation. The Revised Chinese PMWI was reviewed by a panel of intimate partner violence (IPV) experts in Hong Kong for the relevance of items to Chinese women, resulting in the scale-level content validity index of 0.94, which indicated the content validity was satisfactory. After adjustment of items based on the experts’ opinions, cognitive debriefing was conducted with a sample of 10 Chinese women to confirm the comprehensibility of the Revised Chinese PMWI by the target population. The last step in the preparation phase was assessment of test-retest reliability of the questionnaire among 37 Chinese women with a 2-week interval, which was shown to be satisfactory with an intraclass correlation coefficient over 0.95. The second phase of the validation process was the full psychometric testing of the Revised Chinese PMWI. The validation study included 1198 Chinese women who had been in intimate relationships during the preceding 12 months. Based on exploratory factor analysis, the questionnaire was reduced to 49 items. The test revealed two factors as the original English version, emotional-verbal and dominance-isolation, which were further verified by confirmatory factor analysis. In addition, known-groups validity was demonstrated by significant differences in scores between women recruited from different places (shelter as opposed to community center) and with different abuse histories (abused in past year, not abused but in distressed in relationships, or not abused in satisfactory relationships). Moreover, convergent validity was established through moderate-to-strong correlations of the Revised Chinese PMWI with measures assessing other forms of IPV, controlling behaviors, marital satisfaction, and depression. Trivial correlation with unrelated demographic variables (number of children and education level) indicated discriminant validity. Regarding reliability, the Revised Chinese PMWI showed good internal consistency. Cronbach’s alpha for each subscale ranged from 0.947 to 0.966 and was 0.975 for the entire tool. The use of the comprehensive validation procedures in the present study provided evidence for both cultural appropriateness and satisfactory psychometric properties of the Revised Chinese PMWI. It shows promise as a useful instrument in research and clinical practice to measure the experience of psychological maltreatment in intimate relationships in Chinese women.
published_or_final_version
Nursing Studies
Master
Master of Philosophy

Abstract:
Many complaints were received from the residential area around the Shatin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) about the presence of odour. The dominant odour marker H2S was selected to be studied. A review of the odour measurement and sampling methods, together with the specification of the standard limits and health effects were made. The formation process of H2S was investigated and the abatement and control measures in terms of physical, chemical and biological techniques were compared. The monthly rate of H2S emission in the atmosphere was calculated from the soluble sulfide and the measured wastewater flow at the inlet works, primary sedimentation tanks, aeration tanks, and sludge digestive and storage tanks, and the H2S mapping was carried out at the same places. Meteorological data including wind speed, wind direction, temperature and pressure were collected. The effect of temperature and pH on H2S generation is shown, and the effectiveness of odour control and deodourization processes was studied. A Gaussian dispersion model of Industrial Source Complex version 3 (ISC3) was applied in predicting the ground H2S level at various air sensitive receivers in the vicinity of STSTW. None of the places exceeded the recommended H2S concentration of World Health Organization (WHO) and the odour is a localized problem in STSTW of 35% area having H2S ranging in 0.01--‐0.023ppm. Recommendations are suggested in both short-term improvement in operation and maintenance practice and long-term design and construction of sewage treatment facilities.
published_or_final_version
Environmental Management
Master
Master of Science in Environmental Management

Abstract:
As the global economy has evolved, many companies have expanded their operations overseas in a constant search for potential markets in which to sell their products and services. As these companies seek to establish themselves abroad, it becomes imperative to train and to retain local employees. Despite this pressing need, Japanese companies have been widely criticized for failing to retain the services of experienced local employees. The retail industry, in particular, experiences a high degree of employee mobility and requires instant solutions for adjusting to the fast changing environment in which its firms operate. However, many companies believe in the rationality of their corporate systems without questioning suitability to the local circumstance. This thesis uses an anthropological approach to evaluate the company building process of a leading Japanese fashion enterprise (referred to by the pseudonym “Ichi”) in Hong Kong. In adopting this approach, I seek to explain the formation and expression of Ichi’s corporate ideology, and its interpretation by the firm’s employees. This analysis focuses on two primary themes: Ichi’s managerial control and the way employees attempted to satisfy company expectations in a purely superficial manner. Specifically, I adopt a participant-observation approach over fifteen months to provide a comprehensive illustration of the activity within Ichi’s Hong Kong stores. The first part of this thesis suggests that Ichi uses its corporate ideology, Ichi DNA, to control employees through its corporate system including training, ranking, remuneration, and promotion. Ichi’s implementation of its corporate system in Hong Kong seeks to apply its ideology to local employees to promote a “shared” set of values and its own institutional culture, thus unifying important principles across the company. This suggests that industrial familialism, which many scholars have identified as unique to Japanese corporate culture, only superficially illustrates the nature of Japanese companies. This thesis further demonstrates that during the implementation of Ichi’s corporate ideology, store employees individually or collectively distorted reports of their performance to attain personal career goals. This challenges the widespread perception that “harmony” is a genuine characteristic of the Japanese company. By examining the actions of different nationalities, the thesis also shows that Store Managers manage human relations within their stores primarily on the basis of different interpretations of the corporate ideology rather than their ethnic backgrounds. This similarly refutes the presumption that Japanese companies are ethnocentric in nature. Evidence from this study demonstrates that the general assumption of the efficacy of scientific management must be reexamined, as the company’s managerial practices and relationships with its employees are more heavily influenced by worker politics than the firm’s rational structure. By exploring the company building process and the effect of dynamic human relations on it, this study seeks to address the gap between corporate ideology and those practices that exemplify it, contrasting starkly with studies that claim that Japanese firms are uniquely culture- or ethnocentric.
published_or_final_version
Japanese Studies
Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy
