Abstract:
This thesis presents a teaching job shop control system for running in assembly laboratories at colleges and universities in preparing Industrial Engineering students for challenges faced in real-world factories. Current techniques fail to encompass this idea of training for students like the proposed method does. Microsoft Access was used in creating a database that is the center point in this new system. Inventory is managed using this database system and added if parts are created in the manufacturing lab and moved to the assembly area. The system will stop if parts are low until new parts are created. In this new system, a pallet with an unfinished product on it moves down a conveyor system until it reaches the next workstation. At this station, the station operator scans a barcode on the pallet. This barcode contains what product is on this pallet. Based on this information, an ordered list of tasks appears on the workstation computer screen and must be done before the pallet can be moved on. When all tasks have been completed at a station, the station operator clicks ?done? on the screen and then can either move to the next pallet or end the run. Statistics are kept on the quality of the final products and parts as well as a work-in-process and on a goal percentage of good products out at the end of a one-hour time frame. Administrators will be able to assign tasks and parts to products and stations, as well as be able assign the goal ahead of time.

This research project proposes a supply management model in a consumer goods company in Lima, Peru, to improve stock control and avoid raw materials stockouts and overstock. A Kraljic matrix was used to identify products based on their criticality considering material segmentation, warehouse capacity and times, and ABC segmentation to classify products on each quadrant of the matrix. This project also focuses on defining purchasing and supply strategies in each quadrant of the matrix. This model involves the development of three processes that are related to a new purchasing strategy: economic order quantity, lot-for-lot ordering, and just in time. This new system is based on a more accurate inventory because continuous improvement attracts employees’ attention and engages them in reducing the number of manual notifications made by operators every month. Moreover, after implementing the new procedure for recording inventories, the inventory record was 87% accurate, whereas, in the past, the inventory was not counted and was performed by employees of other areas.

Abstract:
In this study, we focus on a real life problem that involves a single item which is used in military operations. The items in use fail according to a Poisson process and lead times are deterministic. Four alternative inventory control models are developed. Among these models, a two-echelon system consisting of a depot in the upper and several bases in the lower echelon is operated currently. This system is compared to a single-echelon system that consists of several bases. The comparison reveals the importance of the holding cost incurred for the items intransit between the depot and the base which is ignored in most of the studies in literature. Both the two and single-echelon models are also extended to have repair ability. A continuous-review base-stock policy is used for all models. Exact models are formulated. The results are obtained under various lead time, unit costs and demand parameters. Results of four different settings are compared and the findings are reported.

Edara, Praveen Kumar. "Dynamic Travel Demand Management Strategies: Dynamic Congestion Pricing and Highway Space Inventory Control System." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28889.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of trips on highways and urban networks has significantly increased in the recent decades in many cities across the world. At the same time, the road network capacities have not kept up with this increase in travel demand. Urban road networks in many countries are severely congested, resulting in increased travel times, increased number of stops, unexpected delays, greater travel costs, inconvenience to drivers and passengers, increased air pollution and noise level, and increased number of traffic accidents. Expanding traffic network capacities by building more roads is extremely costly as well as environmentally damaging. More efficient usage of the existing supply is vital in order to sustain the growing travel demand. Travel Demand Management (TDM) techniques involving various strategies that increase the travel choices to the consumers have been proposed by the researchers, planners, and transportation professionals. TDM helps create a well balanced, less automobile dependent transportation system. In the past, several TDM strategies have been proposed and implemented in several cities around the world. All these TDM strategies, with very few exceptions, are static in nature. For example, in the case of congestion pricing, the toll schedules are previously set and are implemented on a daily basis. The amount of toll does not vary dynamically, with time of day and level of traffic on the highway (though the peak period tolls are different from the off-peak tolls, they are still static in the sense that the tolls don't vary continuously with time and level of traffic). The advent of Electronic Payment Systems (EPS), a branch of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), has made it possible for the planners and researchers to conceive of dynamic TDM strategies. Recently, few congestion pricing projects are beginning to adopt dynamic tolls that vary continuously with the time of day based on the level of traffic (e.g. I-15 value pricing in California). Dynamic TDM is a relatively new and unexplored topic and the future research attempts to provide answers to the following questions: 1) How to propose and model a Dynamic TDM strategy, 2) What are the advantages of Dynamic TDM strategies as compared to their Static counterparts, 3) What are the benefits and costs of implementing such strategies, 4) What are the travel impacts of implementing Dynamic TDM strategies, and 5) How equitable are the Dynamic TDM strategies as compared to their Static counterparts. This dissertation attempts to address question 1 in detail and deal with the remaining questions to the extent possible, as questions 2, 3, 4, and 5, can be best answered only after some real life implementation of the proposed Dynamic TDM strategies. Two novel Dynamic TDM strategies are proposed and modeled in this dissertation -- a) Dynamic Congestion Pricing and b) Dynamic Highway Space Inventory Control System. In the first part, dynamic congestion pricing, a real-time road pricing system in the case of a two-link parallel network is proposed and modeled. The system that is based on a combination of Dynamic Programming and Neural Networks makes "on-line" decisions about road toll values. In the first phase of the proposed model, the best road toll sequences during certain time period are calculated off-line for many different patterns of vehicle arrivals. These toll sequences are computed using Dynamic Programming approach. In the second phase, learning from vehicle arrival patterns and the corresponding optimal toll sequences, neural network is trained. The results obtained during on-line tests are close to the best solution obtained off-line assuming that the arrival pattern is known. Highway Space Inventory Control System (HSICS), a relatively new demand management concept, is proposed and modeled in the second half of this dissertation. The basic idea of HSICS is that all road users have to make reservations in advance to enter the highway. The system allows highway operators to make real-time decisions whether to accept or reject travellers' requests to use the highway system in order to achieve certain system-wide objectives. The proposed HSICS model consists of two modules -- Highway Allocation System (HAS) and the Highway Reservation System (HRS). The HAS is an off-line module and determines the maximum number of trips from each user class (categorized based on time of departure, vehicle type, vehicle occupancy, and trip distance) to be accepted by the system given a pre-defined demand. It develops the optimal highway allocations for different traffic scenarios. The "traffic scenarios-optimal allocations" data obtained in this way enables the development of HRS. The HRS module operates in the on-line mode to determine whether a request to make a trip between certain origin-destination pair in certain time interval is accepted or rejected.

Karlsson, Per-Johan, and Mariana Porto. "Improving the control of work-in-process at VSM Group AB." Thesis, Jönköping University, JTH, Industrial Engineering and Management, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-1302.

Abstract:

Today many companies face problems with inventory management. The importance of adequate inventory management has become more evident, while organizations try to reduce their costs and increase their service level.

This master thesis was conducted at VSM Group AB in Huskvarna, which is a manufacturer that produces and delivers sewing machines to a worldwide market. VSM Group AB has problems with the management and the refilling of the work-in-process (WIP) inventories and also with lack of information about component balance and location in the production and material planning system.

Therefore, the purpose of the thesis was to improve the control of the WIP inventories and the information about the components in the production and material planning system. In order to achieve the purpose, interviews and observations were performed, theories in inventory management were reviewed and the production process was studied.

Afterwards solutions for improvements were proposed. To solve the management and refilling problem, a kanban ordering system was proposed, which would use kanban cards to order components from the storages to the WIP inventories. To develop the component information displayed in the production and material planning system, an additional feature was proposed to the system. So instead of showing one inventory balance for each component, the system would display balances for three different places in the factory: the goods arrival and quality control area, the storage and the production.

The proposed solutions can provide several benefits to the company. The kanban ordering system can increase the material handlers’ efficiency, set a standard refilling quantity and be a tool for reducing the WIP inventory levels. The more detailed information in the production and material planning system can improve the decision making for the purchasers and planners and give the ability to measure the flow and level of material inside the factory.

These solutions will provide a more appropriate inventory management to the company, with better control of the components and improved information quality.

Abstract:
The following thesis is based on a study on warehousing for an inventory of finished goods at Volvo Construction Equipment in Eskilstuna.   The inventory stores components consisting axles and transmissions. The project portrays a current situation analysis based on collected primary data, in form of interviews and observations. The current situation analysis includes a detailed process mapping, different warehouse layouts along with calculations. These aspects have been used in the development of improvement propositions.   The company is currently required to deliver components according to FIFO (First In, First Out), that is therefore fundamental when designing the following thesis. The project has however not been based on implementing FIFO, but only improving the existing management of FIFO. The current way of working with FIFO at the company is not ideal, consequently contributed to lack of storage space. This has eventually led to some components being stored outside the warehouse. It means that the components will not be weather-protected, which is one of the aspects that the company wishes to improve.   The Authors have presented various improvement propositions consisting investing in a: pallet, mobile- and a push back racking system and an improved inventory layout. These suggestions have been compared based on various factors that could be prioritized by the company. Examples on these key factors are: cost, volume utilization and enforcement of FIFO. The cost analysis for the racking systems are based on assistance from suppliers that has led to an enhanced cost comparison. The presented propositions have been delimited to ultimately being able to decide the final suggestion. For further studies, the company is recommended to invest in a pallet racking system, which is not only a beneficial economical solution, but also solves space shortage while all the components are stored with weather- protection. This will ultimately lead to improvement on managing FIFO in the finished goods inventory that the company strives after.

Zhang, Jiaqi. "Holdout transshipment policy in two-location inventory systems." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4353.

Full text
Abstract:
In two-location inventory systems, unidirectional transshipment policies are considered when an item is not routinely stocked at a location in the system. Unlike the past research in this area which has concentrated on the simple transshipment policies of complete pooling or no pooling, the research presented in this thesis endeavors to develop an understanding of a more general class of transshipment policy. The research considers two major approaches: a decomposition approach, in which the two-location system is decomposed into a system with independent locations, and Markov decision process approach. For the decomposition approach, the transshipment policy is restricted to the class of holdout transshipment policy. The first attempt to develop a decomposition approach assumes that transshipment between the locations occurs at a constant rate in order to decompose the system into two independent locations with constant demand rates. The second attempt modifies the assumption of constant rate of transshipment to take account of local inventory levels to decompose the system into two independent locations with non-constant demand rates. In the final attempt, the assumption of constant rate of transshipment is further modified to model more closely the location providing transshipments. Again the system is decomposed into two independent locations with non-constant demand rates. For each attempt, standard techniques are applied to derive explicit expressions for the average cost rate, and an iterative solution method is developed to find an optimal holdout transshipment policy. Computational results show that these approaches can provide some insights into the performance of the original system. A semi-Markov decision model of the system is developed under the assumption of exponential lead time rather than fixed lead time. This model is later extended to the case of phase-type distribution for lead time. The semi-Markov decision process allows more general transshipment policies, but is computationally more demanding. Implicit expressions for the average cost rate are derived from the optimality equation for dynamic programming models. Computational results illustrate insights into the management of the two-location system that can be gained from this approach.

Abstract:

Each inventory manager at the Aviation Supply Office Philadelphia, PA is presently required to manage approximately 700 line items. To allow the inventory manager a more efficient method of reviewing and using the data and reports from the Uniform Inventory Control Point (UICP) computer system, a distributed computer system is necessary. By downloading the the appropriate inventory data from UICP to a local computer system, a decision support system (DSS) can be be implemented using existing off the shelf hardware and software. The ability to replace the present copious paper reports with concise computerized information and import that data into electronic spreadsheets for further analysis can greatly improve the inventory manager's effectiveness. To this end, this thesis provides inventory managers at ASO with access to the following functions: Interactive access to the main UICP database. The ability to use UICP data with a decision support system. A user interface that is easy to understand and learn. A local data base which supports working group requirements. Basic office automation. This thesis will cover the selection of the hardware and software, data identification and management and DSS development. A prototype system called the IM Workstation was developed for this thesis and used to produce the thesis document. COBOL and ALIS ELF macro program listings are provided.

In this work the management of a production system with a high mixture of products, interdependent demands and optional components is analyzed. An approach based on reorder point policy is proposed for both raw parts and finished goods inventory control. In the latter case, the solution of an optimization problem determines whether each product should be held in inventory and if so which safety factor z should be used. The choice of z, and as a consequence of the reorder level R, takes into consideration the demands interdependence, the customer's availability to buy if a certain waiting time is quoted to them and the fact that in a certain type of orders the optional components are required to ship. Global and decomposed optimization approaches are presented and compared. The decomposed approach is shown to achieve performances very close to the ones of the global optimization with much easier computations. By using the policy based on the decomposed optimization, it is possible to reduce simultaneously the value of the inventory and the expected number of lost sales as compared to a simple reorder point policy or to the policy currently in use at the company. A reduction of 35% of inventory and of almost 10 times of the average value of lost sales is expected if the company substitutes the current policy with the proposed one.

Intel's Colorado Springs wafer fabrication facility, known internally as F23, has undertaken several initiatives to reduce cycle time including High Precision Maintenance (HPM), content reduction through the application of Manufacturing Excellence (mX), effective utilization of production equipment, and aggressive inventory control. Each of these efforts has contributed to the marked improvement F23 achieved throughout 2006. F23's cycle time efficiency, the ratio of raw process cycle time to actual fab cycle time, improved from 12% (worst amongst Intel facilities) to greater than 35% (best amongst Intel sites), and overall cycle time was reduced by more than 61% in 2006. Inventory control was found to have a major impact on factory cycle time and performance. F23 controls its factory work-in-process, WIP, inventory through the F23 Wafer Starts Protocol. F23 utilizes Little's Law (Cycle Time = Inventory / Output) to identify target WIP inventory levels required to achieve particular cycle time goals. The target inventory is then achieved by modulating wafer starts. To do this, the Wafer Starts Protocol monitors the inventory of the overall fab and the constraint operations and suggests the amount of wafers to start for each shift.
(cont.) Maintaining the target inventory level drives the overall factory cycle time towards the cycle time goal. Using the starts protocol, F23 has reduced its inventory by 44% while ramping factory output. During the implementation of this wafer starts protocol, F23 began tracking a new inventory metric to determine factory performance. Critical WIP ratio was introduced to evaluate the factory's inventory relative to the theoretical minimum inventory based upon a given factory output level and raw process time. F23 also found that this metric provides an effective comparison of inventory level between fabs. The Fab23 Wafer Starts Protocol is one of the ways in which F23 has applied Manufacturing Science tactics and principles to drive cycle time improvements. F23 has found that inventory control can have significant impacts on factory cycle time. This is one of the reasons why F23 was able to achieve dramatic cycle time improvement.

Abstract:
A lot has happened in recent years in the manufacturing industry. Customization with different accessories and wishes puts pressure on companies' ability to produce. Efficient and accurate handling and storage of goods is a prerequisite for staying competitive. It is essential to have inventory management for control of the company's inputs and outflows in order to achieve profitability and high customer satisfaction. Hallberg-Rassy is Scandinavia's largest shipbuilding company that always delivers on time. With increased demand and handling of goods, inventory management is important in order to preserve quality. The company has a large central warehouse that is controlled by the business system Navision, but the problem is that the existing business system cannot be used for all the warehouses in the business. The business system has been adapted too much to the central warehouse, which means that the system cannot be applied to the company's other warehouse. Today is the other warehouse controlled by a manual system in the form of binders, where the handling entails a misleading stock balance. With interviews and observations of the company as well as the development of relevant theory, we’ve found out which factors that are the reasons manual inventory routines are retained. Also, which approach should be taken to integrate manual warehouse routines into a modern warehouse management system. We also investigated the complications of such a transition result. We concluded that Hallberg-Rassy remain the manual storage routines because integration to a modern warehouse management system causes high costs with resistance and fear from the workers. This integration can also pose potential risks for lack of knowledge of the new module in the business system. This requires training to maintain a high work ethic that promotes the right input to the new module in the business system.

Du, Toit Deirdre. "Decision-making framework for inventory management of spare parts in capital-intensive industries." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/96111.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Effective management of spare parts inventory is essential to companies because it influences inventory costs and asset utilization. The vast and diverse portfolio of spare parts, intermittent demand patterns and contradicting objectives between departments are examples of some of the factors that complicate Spare Parts Management (SPM). Managers of spare parts are faced with trade-off decisions between risk and cost on a daily basis. These decisions include, amongst many, determining appropriate stock levels and order frequencies. Despite the importance of SPM, decisions are however often made intuitively in practice with little factual support, and the decision-making process is commonly constrained within departmental silos. Even though there is a large body of academic knowledge on this topic, practical applications of spare parts inventory solutions lag behind theoretical studies. The majority of studies in literature focus on single components of SPM, such as demand forecasting and parts classification, whereas fewer studies consider the decision-making process itself. This study proposes a decision-making framework for spare parts inventory management. The framework is based on a wide-ranging literature review that focuses on capturing the essence of Spare Parts Management (SPM), but also acknowledges the interconnectedness of the problem. Therefore, core inventory management principles, as well as closely related topics such as Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Physical Asset Management (PAM), are studied in the context of spare parts. The broad scope of the literature study leads to a holistic approach to the problem and prevents sub-optimization. The proposed framework condenses principles from various fields of study (SCM, PAM, Classification and Inventory Management) into a stepwise methodology presented as a decision-making framework. The objective of the framework is to provide managers with a structured process, based on factual information, to enable better decision-making in the field. Furthermore, the framework aims to capture the fundamentals of SPM in a simplistic manner to ease the adoption of the framework in practice. A case study is conducted in the South African mining industry to validate the framework. The case study demonstrates that the framework is practical, provides structured guidance, and assists managers to make trade-off decisions in managing spare parts inventory.

Abstract:
Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) spends significant and unnecessary amounts of capital in distribution material inventory. As a government owned power utility, citizens expect to receive low cost electricity, so it is particularly important for Taipower to have a cost effective material management system (MMS). To reduce operating costs on carrying inventory, this dissertation explores literature on MMS in terms of forecasting demand, inventory control, and purchasing. And, this dissertation conducts extensive research on conventional operations research and modern computer-based material management techniques. In addition, four case studies are analyzed to determine what sort of MMS will be appropriate for Taipower's needs. The theory and practice revealed in the literature lead to a proposed MMS methodology, a hybrid of conventional and modern computer-based techniques, which can prevent the shortages and surpluses of material consuming needless amounts of capital. Finally, a simulation is offered to compare the costs of the existing and proposed material management system. The simulation results indicated that Taipower could reduce its average inventory level by 64.5% and its operating cost by 44 . 7% with the proposed material management system.

Abstract:
The concept of inventory control has been around since the early 20th century and it’s constantly evolving. The importance of inventory management and supply chain management is clear, and companies are constantly trying to evolve their systems and ways of handling inventory control. By having a proper inventory control system with adequate inventory record audits, a company could potentially have several benefits such as reduced tied-up capital, reduced holding costs, reduced/redistributed work hours, better automation and more. Most organisations and companies have some form of inventory control, however not all have full control of their inventory. This includes automatic inventory balance updates, package traceability, automatic replenishment systems and more. To implement these ideas, a company would need to foremost find what factors are currently hindering them from obtaining this and consequently being able to adjust their factors. Since there are several ways to obtain an automatic inventory record update that is adequate, multiple proposals are discussed in this thesis project. This thesis project assessed what the necessary steps that a company needs to perform are through a case study at Scania CV Engine and a benchmarking at Scania Production Angers. Through a collection of scientific literature and empirical data, an attempt to identify the factors that determine whether a company can implement full inventory control or not was made. As a supplement to this, this thesis project also looked over what type of consequences an implementation of full inventory control could have in a company, both when it comes to purely systemic consequences as well as economic consequences.

Xu, Dong. "An Integrated Simulation, Learning and Game-theoretic Framework for Supply Chain Competition." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/338942.

Full text
Abstract:
An integrated simulation, learning, and game-theoretic framework is proposed to address the dynamics of supply chain competition. The proposed framework is composed of 1) simulation-based game platform, 2) game solving and analysis module, and 3) multi-agent reinforcement learning module. The simulation-based game platform supports multi-paradigm modeling, such as agent-based modeling, discrete-event simulation, and system dynamics modeling. The game solving and analysis module is designed to include various parts including strategy refinement, data sampling, game solving, equilibrium conditions, solution evaluation, as well as comparative statistics under varying parameter values. The learning module facilitates the decision making of each supply chain competitor under the stochastic and uncertain environments considering different learning strategies. The proposed integrated framework is illustrated for a supply chain system under the newsvendor problem setting in several phases. At phase 1, an extended newsvendor competition considering both the product sale price and service level under an uncertain demand is studied. Assuming that each retailer has the full knowledge of the other retailer's decision space and profit function, we derived the existence and uniqueness conditions of a pure strategy Nash equilibrium with respect to the price and service dominance under additive and multiplicative demand forms. Furthermore, we compared the bounds and obtained various managerial insights. At phase 2, to extend the number of decision variables and enrich the payoff function of the problem considered at phase 1, a hybrid simulation-based framework involving systems dynamics and agent-based modeling is presented, followed by a novel game solving procedure, where the procedural components include strategy refinement, data sampling, gaming solving, and performance evaluation. Various numerical analyses based on the proposed procedure are presented, such as equilibrium accuracy, quality, and asymptotic/marginal stability. At phase 3, multi-agent reinforcement learning technique is employed for the competition scenarios under a partial/incomplete information setting, where each retailer can only observe the opponent' behaviors and adapt to them. Under such a setting, we studied different learning policies and learning rates with different decay patterns between the two competitors. Furthermore, the convergence issues are discussed as well. Finally, the best learning strategies under different problem scenarios are devised.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have a good reputation for automation and strength in the integration of business processes (BPs), therefore more and more organisations are adopting ERP systems. The City of Cape Town (CCT), a metropolitan municipality, is one of the organisations that have adopted an ERP system. CCT provides a wide range of services to residents and citizens in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The ERP system at CCT manages the Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes, among others, to ensure good service delivery. ERP systems are able to provide statistical reports on stock-outs; however, the information provided is insufficient to link a specific stock-out to its causes within the SCM process at CCT. This makes it difficult to select the most appropriate solution to minimise the causes and number of stock-outs. The study aims to explore the possible reduction of the causes of stock-outs at CCT stores, therefore the study has adopted a qualitative research methodology with a case study research strategy. It uses subjectivism to understand the truth, with an inductive approach applied to five different interviewee groups, namely the ERP Support Department consultants, the Procurement Department, the Inventory and Stores Management Department, the Master Data Maintenance Department, and the reservation creators. A purposive sampling method is used because the study targets knowledge and experience on the subject from the interviewees in the investigation of the problem. The case is the SCM division at CCT, the unit of analysis is the CCT stores, and the unit of observation is the employees who work for the SCM division of CCT. All ethical procedures and policies of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) are adhered to. For the data collection, in depth semi-structured questions have been developed, and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The leading causes of stock-outs were discovered by analysing the themes. The results revealed the themes, in descending order according to the causes of stock-outs, as follows: procedures, service delivery, suppliers, stock-outs, human resources, and systems. All the objectives were achieved, thereby answering the research questions.

Abstract:
Firms today maintain complex supply chains containing many dependent stages to manufacture a product to the end customer. Here lies a dilemma, keeping extensive inventory generate higher customer satisfaction by enabling quick deliveries. This increase in inventory, however, comes at an increase in costs. Finding the balance between minimizing costs and increasing customer satisfaction is difficult. The search to solve this dilemma has led to the development of research in the area of inventory control. For long, optimization models have been developed to improve the supply chain holistically, from raw material-to-customer. Those approaches, however, have not been possible to apply in practice by being too computationally demanding. Also, they imply organizational adjustments that create issues beyond the optimization flow of materials. It explains why, despite significant technolog- ical advancements, many firms prefer to use non-holistic approaches. This thesis evaluates the tangible effect of using holistic optimization. The objective of this thesis’ is to determine optimal stock levels between dif- ferent stages of production. The method used is an optimization of inventory, stemming from Inventory Control Theories. Inventory optimization is at the cross- roads between logistics, economics, and management. The thesis builds on a case of inventory optimization identified at a large manufacturing firm. The literature in inventory optimization has indicated that inventory and customer services is a domain of continuous development. This thesis focuses on the adequation between total inventory cost and the customer service level. The method used to answer this question is the Multi-Echelon optimization model. This model seeks to optimize reorder points and reorder quantities. A comparison to the Single-Echelon model and a Base-Case allows for evaluation of the performance, discrete event simulation based on a company’s supply chain measures the effect. The result shows that the Multi-Echelon optimization model outperforms the two non-holistic models. This thesis shows the triple advantages of the Multi-Echelon optimization allowing for leaner manufacturing system by 1- reduction of waste, 2- less unproductive capi- tal tied up in inventory, and 3- adding value by increasing customer satisfaction. Other areas of inventory optimization in manufacturing should be able to take ad- vantage of the Multi-Echelon optimization model to manage materials stock-levels, delivery flows, and customer satisfaction.

A proper inventory management is very important, given the value of the items stored and the association with the operating cycle of a company. Information technology has played a key role in a proper inventory management. Usability, well applied, increases the productivity of users, however, its absence increases the occurrence of errors and dissatisfaction. In order to minimize problems with the tool used in this study case and to fit an appropriate inventory management model, an analysis was performed on the tool used in inventory management, using concepts of usability, data and documentation provided. The problems found ranged from the visual inconsistency in the navigation menus without any standard, too much information polluting and confusing the user, inadequate treatment of errors and lack of feedback. The study focused on the problems found with special focus on treatment and prevention of errors and appropriate return of information to users, in order to propose a web system able to reduce errors and correction procedures, reduction of operating time interface, reducing training costs, maintenance and user support, and consequently, increased efficiency and data reliability. In pursuing this goal, a study was made in order to understand the theory of inventory management and its models, the influence of information technology and how usability can facilitate the use of the system and increase the quality of user experience. As for the methodological approach, this research is classified as qualitative and as to the procedures qualifies as a bibliographical, documentary and field research. The data used in the study were provided by the company relating to the stocks of 2008, 2009 and the first half of 2010. The study shows, in technical and usability terms, that the proposal could generate significant benefits for quality of the report of outcomes, improving performance and efficiency in the use of the system. From the inventory management perspective, the study shows that with a tool capable of providing reliable and accurate data it is possible to gain greater control of inventory through the correct application of Just in Time.

Abstract:
The main idea of this research to solve the problem of inventory management for the paper industry SPM PVT limited. The aim of this research was to find a methodology by which the inventory of raw material could be kept at minimum level by means of buffer stock level. The main objective then lies in finding the minimum level of buffer stock according to daily consumption of raw material, finding the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) reorders point and how much order will be placed in a year to control the shortage of raw material. In this project, we discuss continuous review model (Deterministic EOQ models) that includes the probabilistic demand directly in the formulation. According to the formula, we see the reorder point and the order up to model. The problem was tackled mathematically as well as simulation modeling was used where mathematically tractable solution was not possible. The simulation modeling was done by Awesim software for developing the simulation network. This simulation network has the ability to predict the buffer stock level based on variable consumption of raw material and lead-time. The data collection for this simulation network is taken from the industrial engineering personnel and the departmental studies of the concerned factory. At the end, we find the optimum level of order quantity, reorder point and order days.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the role of Inventory Control in Product Service System (PSS) applications within manufacturing contexts. This research led to a new approach for dealing with inventory control and contributes to understanding of the PSS paradigm in manufacturing industries. PSS embraces the product and service continuum as one system; meanwhile, Inventory Control has led to substantial improvements in performance across many industries. PSS and Inventory Control have for many years been recognized in the scientific literature and by industry as enablers of manufacturing operations. Most studies in the field of PSS and Inventory Control have only focussed on its individual scenarios; little is known about where the boundaries of PSS should lie as it needs to integrate both external and internal elements in managing PSS Inventory Control. To date, very little research has been reported related to inventory control in product-service systems from manufacturing operations perspectives. Research has been done in three stages: (1) PSS characteristics were synthesised from the literature; (2) current industry example of PSS inventory were investigated through a survey; four case studies were developed; (3) uncertainty elements were identified from the literature related to the current PSS Inventory Control scenario and these were evaluated, developed and validated producing a generic model. The research carried out involved collecting primary data from qualitative research conducted through four case studies with companies in the United Kingdom and Malaysia; and information from secondary sources; utilising techniques such as survey, interview, matrix and modelling language method. This thesis contributes to the current PSS research by developing a generic model of PSS Inventory Control from manufacturing operations perspectives and a PSS Inventory Control (PSSIC) Framework.

Engström, Marcus, and Johan Gembäck. "Lagerdimensionering vid bearbetningsproduktionen hos Volvo Powertrain i Skövde." Thesis, Linköping University, Production Economics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-52174.

Full text
Abstract:

Volvo Powertrain produces engines and drivelines to AB Volvo's subsidiaries except to Volvo Aero. At the plant in Skövde engines and parts for engines and transmissions are manufactured and the facility includes all three essential areas of production; casting, machining and assembly. When the current recession hit Volvo Powertrain were working with very high inventory levels, which the company was quickly forced to cut since it became the main focus of the group management to reduce the capital tied up. Without conducting any proper analysis were new stock limit levels set in all sections of the company. The aim of this master thesis was to develop a methodology for setting of safety stocks at optimum levels while maintaining high delivery reliability. This would allow the company's inventory levels to be defined using a theoretical basis.

As a starting point, a stock-level design with the service concept SERV2 together with allowing all articles to have differentiated levels of service was used. On the basis of Volvo Powertrain's conditions an optimization problem have been formulated. It turns out that this problem is a nonlinear integer problem, which makes solution very difficult. To overcome these computational problems one of the constraints were approximated in purpose to develop a heuristics. However, it was detected after several attempts, that the heuristics did not satisfy all the constraints at all times so it was decided to use the heuristic solution to act as a starting solution to a search method to search for a local optimum.

The report describes in detail the parameters that need to be measured and how to ensure that all departments are using the same method in the preparation of the necessary input data. The method has been implemented in Excel where the user may enter values for these parameters which are then used in the necessary calculations. The results that are presented includes what batch-sizes that are to be produced, the safety stock level to be applied, which re-order point  to be used and achieved service level.

In addition the report also presents a new way to manage stock control in cases where there is a bottleneck early in the production flow which therefore determines the rate of production in the rest of the flow. Since this creates a pull system through the process flow, the stock between the production steps is unnecessary. A drawback is that the production becomes more sensitive to disturbances but means that previously hidden problems in the production reach the surface.

The results of the simulations attempted show that the method involves reduction of inventory levels at the same time as the desired service level is maintained. By implementing the method Volvo Powertrain in Skövde will have a method to support their decisions which optimizes inventory levels at the same time as high service levels are guaranteed.

Abstract:
Within manufacturing industries, capital is tied up in machines, tools and inventory of unprocessed raw materials as well as finished goods and everything in between, also known as work in progress. Naturally, firms strive to minimize the capital employed in these items and thus facilitate a leaner operation. At the same time, it is important to maintain a stable and uninterrupted production. A prerequisite for maintaining a stable production is that the inputs of the production processes are available at all times. Machining tools need to always be available and easily accessible in order to minimize machine downtime in between batch orders, and if a machine breaks down, the necessary spare parts must be provided quickly. This study has been performed in order to investigate when it would be beneficial for a manufacturer of heavy vehicles to achieve a consumption-driven system for ordering machining tools. More specifically, it looks into the prerequisites and the potential benefits of such a system. This research has been done by conducting a case study at Scania Transmission Machining in Södertälje, Sweden, which is the department responsible for manufacturing conical gears and gear transmission components for Scania’s European production. The case study included a diagnosis of the current inventory control situation, which served the purpose of identifying weaknesses in the system and potential areas of improvement. Furthermore, simulations were conducted based on historical transaction data from the storage unit which supplies tools for the case company. This was done in order to investigate how a consumption-driven inventory control system may be set up in practice and to provide figures on potential monetary gains as well as other benefits. The findings from this study indicate that there are many incentives for Scania Transmission Machining to adopt and implement an inventory control system for machining tools which is based on the consumption. First off, the diagnosis of the current inventory control system revealed several weaknesses and inefficiencies in the system. Furthermore, simulating the inventory levels for a sample of tools showed improvements in terms of the number of days of shortage and in a lower average inventory level. Finally, the monetary savings have been estimated to amount to roughly 1 million SEK per year.

Production systems such as the CONWIP (constant work-in-process) pull production system have been widely studied by researchers to date. The CONWIP pull production system is an alternative to pure push and pure pull systems that lowers and controls inventory levels and reduces production lead time. In this study, a CONWIP pull production system was simulated in place of the current push production system at a food packaging company. ARENA 12.0 simulation software was used and a production system with two dedicated production lines was proposed to reduce the current system's complexity. A method for obtaining the optimum CONWIP level was determined. Various advantages of the CONWIP pull production system were analyzed and it was found that besides a reduction in planning complexity, the proposed two dedicated lines with CONWIP pull production system can also help the company to greatly reduce their total WIP and achieve inventory holding costs savings of over S$38,000 per month. In addition, the total customer lead time can also be reduced from 12 days to 10 days while still meeting customer demand.

Liang, Y. "The development of an intelligent inventory management system." Thesis, University of Salford, 1997. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14812/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the development of an intelligent inventory management system. The aim of the system is to bridge the substantial gap between the theory and the practice of inventory management and to help industrial inventory managers to achieve an effective and successful inventory management. The proposed system attempts to achieve this by providing automatic pattern identification and model selection facilities. Such a hybrid knowledge-based inventory system consists of a collection of techniques (or pattern identifier) for identifying demand and lead time patterns and a knowledge base (or rule base) for subsequent selection of a suitable inventory model taking into consideration aspects of the practical situation. There are no previous attempts in the inventory literature to develop such a system to guide model selection. In order to integrate the system into the established computer-based intelligent inventory management system and facilitate the function of the pattern identifier, a data manager has been developed to manipulate the history data required for statistical analysis and to load the data into the system from other applications. In order to establish the system's model base, the study of the modelling of inventory and the features and evolution of expert systems are reviewed. The published models which deal with similar inventory problems have been compared based on its applicability, clarity, and being suitable to be computerised. It was necessary to further develop and amend published models to fill gaps in the model base. The overall structure and salient features of the proposed system and the development of the system using Visual Basic have been described. The system has been tested using real life data supplied by the co-operating companies. Finally, achievements and shortcomings of the system are discussed and some suggestions for further research are outlined.

Full text
Abstract:
A manufacturing facility consisting of two stations in tandem operates in a maketo-stock mode: after production, items are placed in a finished goods inventory that services an exogenous demand. Demand that cannot be met from inventory is backordered. Each station is modelled as a queue with controllable production rate, and the problem is to control these rates to minimize inventory holding and backordering costs. Optimal controls are computed using dynamic programming and compared with kanban and buffer control mechanisms, popular in manufacturing, and with the base stock mechanism popular in inventory/distribution systems. Conditions are found under which certain simple controls are optimal using stochastic coupling arguments. Insights are gained into when to hold work-in-process and finished goods inventory, comparable to previous studies of production lines in make-to-order and unlimited demand ("push") environments.

Abstract:

ABC Analysis is an inventory categorization technique used to classify and prioritize inventory items in an effort to better allocate business resources. A items are defined as the inventory items considered extremely important to the business, requiring strict oversight and control. B items are important to the business, but don’t require the tight controls and oversight required of the A items. C items are marginally important to the business. ABC Analysis aims to ensure the business-driving inventory items are effectively and efficiently managed. There are numerous single- and multiple-criteria approaches to implementing ABC Analysis. This thesis presents an analysis and comparison of multiple approaches, as they relate to Navy Weapons Systems Support (WSS) Command’s large National Item Identification Number (NIIN) inventory. Additionally, random forests are grown from the inventory metadata to identify and/or verify the attributes most strongly affecting fleet readiness goals. The model will allow WSS to focus resources not only on the correct NIINs, but in the correct areas of NIIN management. Better WSS resource allocation will result in higher fleet readiness, WSS’s primary goal.

Companies today often look to improved inventory management as a means to lower costs and increase their ability to consistently meet customer needs. Research was conducted at Alcoa (Shanghai) Aluminum Products Co,, Ltd, (ASAP) in Shanghai, China to determine a framework that might be used to define and implement a visual inventory management system in a foil mill. The framework proposed is founded on I) understanding the current material and information flows and developing reasons why inventory exists, 2) consolidating rolling and annealing schedules, identifying key specifications, determining necessary inventory levels, and defining a pull system, and 3) creating an environment where people are included in the change process and educated in the principles upon which the visual inventory management system is based. The framework proposed enabled a pull production system to be implemented at ASAP in the cast shop and rolling area in approximately 6 months. It is anticipated that total WIP and finished goods inventory levels will be decreased from 2000T to 1600T, average coil manufacturing time will be reduced from approximately 19 days to I S,S days, and delivery performance will be improved.
